Pretty sure you have to have a kernel loaded that supports boot animations. If you have the stock kernel, you can't do it.

[Q] Custom Boot Animation Stuck In Boot Loop

Alright, so instead of finding my own boot animation, I decided to make my own. After some time, I finally got it to my device and now I get stuck in a boot loop, but I'm not sure why? I get past the 'Galaxy S4' screen and it plays the first 10 seconds of the animation with white flashes then it freezes and reboots. I found a thread on how to get the boot animation off my device but I'd like some insight as to why it does this? Thanks in advance. (sorry if this is in the wrong place or if this question was already answered, I couldn't find anything)

Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone have the generic international LG boot and shutdown animations? sound file for it would be great as well.
these animations can be found at system/media and the sound at system/media/audio/ui
Edit: I have found these animations here but that did not do the trick.
Does anyone have any idea how to remove carrier animation boots completely?
