[Q] few clarifications for a tablet noob please - Kindle Fire General

Hello everybody.
I'm really thinking to buy the kindle fire, yesterday I tried and I'm pretty impressed considering the price!
anyway, I?m really new to the tablet/ebook world and I really need to know what I can or cannot do with this device. I'm willing to root it, but what advantages will I have?
MY main goals are: read epub or pdf books, having a full market for other apps that I might use, watch videos that i copied directly or synced with dropbox.
what else can I do? again sorry for this stupid questions but I don't know anything about tablets.
very important, I'm going to use it in europe and I really don't care about the whole amazon marketplace...
THANK YOU SO MUCH

Read epub: You'll need to convert to mobi (use Calibre or similar) or sideload Aldiko or another epub compatible reader software.
Read pdf: Supports PDFs out of the box very nicely.
Full market: Easy enough with root, check the Dev forum
Videos: Only supports a few formats natively, again you'll need to sideload Moboplayer or Rockplayer (or use the Android market once you've rooted)
Remember this guy only has 8 GB internal storage with no SDcard, so you can't put many videos on there directly at a time. Holds a 4-5 movies or a season of a TV show or so. You could work around that by streaming from a home server with something like Twonky or Emit.
A better choice for you might be the Nook Tablet. I'd check in their dev forum for progress on a working Android market and root. But it has similar specs, a slightly better screen, 16 GB internal and a microSD card slot.

thank you!

Isn't the Nook tablet restricted to only 1GB of files that aren't from BN?

I believe so, but if you are rooted, apps will install directly to the B&N reserved storage. And an SD card is very helpful for a lot of things, even if you don't plan on putting a bunch of media on it. Many apps require an SD card to function fully, like Dropbox, Dolphin, Opera, and the Amazon Appstore. Even if those apps are installed to the internal storage, they'll claim to need an SD card to work.

He'd appreciate the "thank you" button if you're thankful
As for PDF books, I recommend ezPDF Reader Pro; amazing little software.

Actually from what I could see image rich pdf were extremely slow on the KF to load after a couple page turns. Better on the NT but slightly. Suspect this is more due to the fact both units aren't full on tablets. And that the pdf's were textbooks. Just my observations.

[Q] ereader with split pages

I hope this isn't a duplicate thread. I used the search feature but couldn't find any answer to this particular ereader feature...
I'm looking for an ereader that will split pages when in landscape and also has the page turning animation. Obvoiusly, the google books app has the features... but, as has been mentioned in another thread, you can sideload books into the app.
I've tried aldiko, moon+, and laputa, but none of them do these things.....
Any clues? Just another early adoption issue?

... but if Iam not mistaken you can't side load books in the nook app either. I can't remember if cool reader has these features although I remember it having some cool ones (not all of which I could get to work though ) still maybe its worth checking out.
Its far from perfect but its another option that is available at present. hopefully a honeycomb optimized app will show up soon.
So where do you get books from on the standard reader if they can't be sideloaded?

I believe that readers that use Adobe DRM management will use a folder called "Digital Editions" on the internal or external SD card. Many readers do. You can always sideload books by putting them in this folder.
Btw can someone post the Nook Reader apk. For some reason it isn't available on the market in Europe. Thanks.

For the nook app, the folder is called "my documents" so yes, side loading is not only possible, but very easy.
As far as the APk, just google search nook for android and it will take you to the B&N.

Great! so it is possible to side load books.
I've searched yesterday on the internet but couldn't find it. The B&N site gives a pointer to the Android market. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nook-for-android/379002287/
tell me if you are able to get cover art in the books you sideload into the nook app. I have the same files on my nook app and my girlfriend's real nook, and her displays the cover art while mine doesnt.

[Q] Reading a book by LumiRead from external SD card

Hi Guys
Just got an Acer Iconia.
Try to use LumiRead and find that it can not read ebook which stored in SD card
Am I missing something or that just surely true that LumiRead can not accesexternal SD card?
Or maybe can give an advice for the other ebook reader which capable to do that
The same GUI with LumiRead is preferable......
Thank you very much
Aldika has the same style interface and it can import from sdcard. I've been primarily using Cool Reader though!
You will be able to read pdf and epub within the download folder on sd-card.

LumiRead Settings -> Manage my book folders -> Back icon until you can see the External_SD option. Should be able to choose your folder from there.
Personally though, I can't stand LumiRead. You can't change the font or margins. Aldiko is a FAR better reader IMO.
I tried the Download folder and that didn't work. I also don't see a Manage my book folders in the Lumiread settings. All I have are Register Adobe, Device activation (for adobe content), theme, tags, and about lumiread.
Any further ideas as I would like to store content on the SD card.
thanks,
Brian
Its possible to change the font SIZE by tapping on the top of a page and a tool bar will open.
I can only put books in the Lumiread folder on the (internal) SD card, cant find a setting to make it use the external SD :-(
I've just received the HC 3.1 update, and together with it, a new update for lumiread. Now I am able to import my books from the external microSD card and it works like a charm!
That good. I haven't played around much with Lumiread yet since I didn't see an obvious way to sideload books and was more interested in trying out the Google Books app(it's ok, I like being able to download old magazines from the 1910-1920 for free).
Just an FYI for others new to the Iconia and Honeycomb, the last update of Aldiko seems to have created some problems. It freezes whenever I open the app and when looking at reviews in the market, there are several from Iconia owners complaining that Aldiko no longer works. It was updated June 30. If interested you can always download the older version, I think is 1.2.13 or you can look for alternatives. I found Moon+Reader which is customizable and reads epubs and some other formats, but not pdf. Still keeping Aldiko on my phone though

[HOW-TO] create ebooks from PDF

I haven't contributed much to this forum, therefore, I decided to make this how-to thread for those of you who would like to be able to read PDF files in ebook readers (i.e kindle). I should also mention that the same technique can be used for .doc and other file formats but since most of the books are in .pdf format on the web, I decided to make this thread for those of us who enjoy reading books on our devices but would rather have the ebook version of those books so we can use them in ebook readers.
Advantage of turning pdf files into ebook formats (.epub):
1) you can easily transfer them to your nook or kindle or ipads and read them when you dont have your TF handy!
2)The greatest satisfaction of all for me is when I go to turn pages I would love to see the actual page curling animation! which can not be used with regular pdf readers.
3) ebook readers give you the advantage of selecting night/day which in turn makes it much easier to read at night.
4) A single .pdf book can exceed 30Mb but the same book in ebook format is only 170 Kb! its good for those of us with space limitations.
- first of google or locate on ur device the .pdf file of the book you would like to turn into an ebook.
- now head over to www.epub2go.com (using your mac, linux or pc) make a free account first then
- go ahead and either upload the file or give it's URL on the homepage of epub2go. give it a minute to turn the files into ebook, then it asks you if you'd like to send it to your iphone or just view/save on your computer, choose the latter one. It asks you where you would like to save it, give it a destination and remember it!
-now at this stage I email the .epub file as an attachment to myself (to read on my TF)....at this stage your ebook is ready, if you'd like to read it on your ipad, kindle, nook etc, you would just need to transfer the file to your device and enjoy it! (I know with ipads you can just drag and drop the file in itunes 'books' interface)
-on your TF download FBreader app.
-download the .epub file you emailed yourself and save it. (note: your email client should save the attachments in 'Download' directory in your SD card).
-open up the FBreader app and on the first page tap on 'File tree'
-locate SD card then 'Download' folder... you should see your file listed there.
-ENJOY!!
Hopefully this was helpful
Let me know if you got any questions
Nice job. Added to ultimate thread. Personally I prefer Calibre, as you dont have to register and you don't have to upload anything. It also converts to a massive range of formats:
Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, HTMLZ, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ
Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, HTMLZ, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ
Link here if anyone's interested in trying it: http://calibre-ebook.com/
I also prefer calibre, you have got quite a lot of different options while creating ebooks and is very easy to use.

Good to know about the Calibre.
One challenge I have is that I wanna create ebooks that can be read in TF's own MyLibrary app, I would to be able to read the ebooks just like the ebooks that came stock on MyLibrary basically you can see two pages on the screen and you get the actual full page curling effect when you try to flip pages.
I tried reading the ebooks I created on MyLibrary to see if I get the same effect as the books that came stock with the TF but it was unsuccessful.

What specifically is different with Calibre converted ebooks. Is it some feature / function that you're not able to use?
Thanks
I've been using ePubBuilder, it supports intelligent chapter splitting, white space cleaning, import from UMD, SND, PDF, TXT and a ton of other format. Add book cover and description at book creation and saves it in a format that makes it easily editable in the future. I'm not sure if its available in English yet, but I saw this language setting in options.

Another +1 for Calibre here
Calibre, hands down.
does the calibre recognizes your TF? when I connect my TF to my PC, calibre won't recognize it even as an SD card.
MobiPocket Creator is also good.
Calibre's great, been using it since my old Sony-PRS 500, currently using it with an Android phone, and hope to soon be using it for my Transformer. I've been using Aldiko on my phone and have no complaints, hope it makes the jump to tablet ok, or that Honeycomb has a good native Epub reader.
I have tried to open an ebook, i made with calibre with "MY Library", but it want not open. If i tab the book in "My Library" the app closes.

With calibre you can do internal web publishing, and point your transformer's browser via wifi to your computer and from there download your epub.
I use fbreader as my primary reader. To get fbreader to successfully download the books I always have to install aldiko.
Here's the web page that better details calibre internal web publishing.

I also think that Calibre is the best software there is for preparing files for a phone or tab, but as an aside, Zinio is now avaiable for Android.
+1 Calibre here. Been using for months for my Kindle
Another +1 Calibre user.
Have thousands of books in Calibre library that transfer easily to the Ipad, Kindle and Android.
Transformer should arrive Tuesday and Calibre will definitely be used.
Another good thing about Calibre is that it is free and is updated CONSTANTLY and is customizable to how you want your epubs to be formatted.
You never know what new feature might drop any day.
Thanx sooo much this helped me out alot
Great thread! I've been reading and rereading.
Question that maybe some of you have already solved(s). Text to Speech apps.
One of the main reasons I wanted the TF is to at sometime not to have to replace my Kindle DX, which I really enjoy. I'm half and half on reading and listening on driving, but it seems the apps are few for this...only found 2 of them.
I'm familiar with years of working with Calibre and Mobipocket and I'm through my learning curve with an SD card to transfer from my computer/e-mail the different formats.
Here's the two apps I found:
ezPDF Reader - I may have to go back to this, couldn't figure out how the TTS works. Yet, I'm not crazy on PDF format for book reading....guess Calibre spoiled me.(s)
Moon+Reader Pro - $4.89 and worked with yesterday. I wouldn't suggest anyone try this yet,had to delete. I've already wrote for a refund and haven't heard back. The book reading part seemed fine and when I did the TTS and got out, my screen started blinking real fast, continuously (never happened before)....I gave it 3-4 minutes to see if it stopped, it didn't.
As soon as I deleted it, everything came back to normal and my screen has remained fine. Pretty sure it only started with the TTS.
Any suggestions on apps for reading and TTS...maybe more will come along in the future. And I did ask Moon+Reader Pro if they do an update, let me know - I'd like to try it again, but can't risk it now.
Thanks

Help with e readers

Hey all. I have a rooted NC running CM7. I have alot of books side loaded on my NC. Ive noticed the Nook app has a hard time finding these side loaded books. It only finds them when they are on my SD card and even then it takes several minutes of syncing for them to be found. What is a good reader I can use that can read multiple formats? I want it to be able to find books anywhere in my NC i.e. SD card, documents folder, etc. What do you guys use? Thanks!
This could be good. How many of the coder types actually use the Nook Color for reading????

A lot of people use Aldiko, and/or Moon+ Reader. I like CoolReader, though for some reason it couldn't see books on the internal memory until several reboots after I installed it.
+1 for Aldiko
Works well, good layout, and can easily find and load books anywhere on the sdcard.

I wholeheartedly agree and tell everyone who I recommend the nook to that I do this.

Has the Nook STG come to the end of it's rooted shelf life?

I've just bought a new NSTG and rooted it via NookManager and installed NTGApps. However it seems that the majority of the apps via Market Place and Amazon Market just wont run.
Ideally I want to get wireless book syncing working (I believe it's possible via Dropbox and Calibre and another eReader such as Aldiko or Moon+ and also wanted to try and install ReaditLater/Pocket and RSS reader like NewsRob). However all these apps fail to load or install. Either saying their incompatiable with my device or simply crashing on startup. And after searching high and low have been unable to find any working APKs online.
Syncing books via an external SD card is inconvinient and when I've read books directly from the SD card the Nook reader never seems to store my bookmarks and notes. Which is annoying. Though maybe I'm missing something?
Am I going crazy and missing something as it's only a 6 months since this post was made and most of the reasons for rooting the device are redundant?
Seems like getting brand new Kindle might be the better option?
I had a few issues similar which I never bothered to resolve, a few months ago. NewsRob didn't work for me, although others have reported sucess (at least with GrazeRss, the replacement version).
One obvious potential problem, you need an SD card inserted for some things to work, and possibly some of the mount points might not match what is expected by apps.

Thanks for the RSS advice.
Did you find any way to wirelessly sync or get another ereader like Moon+ on it? I really like the feature of Moon+ that tells you how long before you finish the next chapter as well as the ability to read *.MOBI files. Little things but still a little annoying without them.
Wut? Just download dropsync and sync a folder of which you prefer. Dropsync worked, works and probably will fork for a lil' bit more. It's just like a charm.

Aweome. Dropsync works like a charm.
A lot of apps on market have been updated too much to often work at all or stably. hunt around and try some older version apks.
Older versions work much better Opera Mobile/Mini is classic example of that. Even though some relatively newer versions run they are not always stable.
Here is copy of old apk if you interested btw
Coolreader / FBreader / Perfect Viewer current versions on market should all work well on the NSTG.

Hi, I think I still have APKs for dropbox, aldiko and greader which work fine on my rooted NSTG. I must say I'm about to start using the USB cable to sync with Calibre as I like the nook reader and the library is getting messy (can't archive non-B&N books AFAIK). Can send you a link to old APKs if you PM me.

Would be great if you could upload to mediafire or some cyberlocker for other to grab. If you could let us know version numbers would be great too.
