Evo has started reading incoming texts aloud - EVO 4G General

Hey kids. At lunch today, my phone started reading incoming texts aloud. I can't seem to find the setting to turn this off. How do i get this turned off?
Secondly, what could have auto-updated or self-enabled to cause this to happen?? I haven't updated anything save for Google Maps today.
Thanks for any help guys.
P.S. Running CM7.

What texting app are you using?

The one built-in to CM7.
Also, i just tried installing SVOX, to improve the voice quality. Couldn't get it set as the default TTS engine, so i removed Pico TTS with TitaniumBackup and now every time i hit the text-to-speech settings "com.android.settings" FC's

Try installing handcent from the market. Only texting app I use, a lot better in my opinion.
Also it fc's because it needs the Pico TTS for the settings, so if you have the backup, restore it from tb, or download and install from the market.

I can't do handcent again. I also can't find the Pico TTS in the market or on google. I tried the three or four 1.6 versions i could find. None of them were valid.
Now, i can't use the SVOX app cause its not set to default and i can't go into settings to change it(not that i could before) because my stupid ass removed Pico TTS. Any tips for a moron?
EDIT: And the best part? My phone is STILL reading my texts aloud to anyone that cares to listen. Where is it getting the TTS engine from???

This fixed all my problems! Pico is installed, settings work again, i was able to switch over to SVOX.
Also, i found out that Cluzee (which i forgot i had installed) was the cause of all my troubles. Apparently it starts reading texts automatically upon install.
Thanks again for all your help!

Hopefully the texts weren't embarrassing or racy and you were by yourself if they were!

Funny you should say that. I was texting with an EMT friend of mine and she had just helped a guy married to a mannequin. During this string of texts, she said to me "Well, at least you know she swallows" And THAT was the text my phone decided to read whilst walking through the IT department of my company.
good times!

[Q] SVOX to change default Google NAV voice

So...the standard Google voice is terrible. I start hunting around and run into SVOX. Epic is still 2.1 right now so I'm told to download TTS Service Extended. I follow the indtructions I get from here:
http://svoxmobilevoices.wordpress.com/2010/05/06/how-to-use/
But..no good. Any ideas folks?
Anyone else despise that stock nav voice?
http://www.appbrain.com/app/classic-text-to-speech-engine/com.svox.classic
I think you are looking for this...very simple to work from the way it looks.
Can anyone who uses this comment on how it works and if it affects performance or volume levels at all?

The voic is amzingly realistic and sounds 100x better than the standard easily. If I could just get it going properly.
How to use updated as follows (note the troubleshooting hint to go back and forth between Pico and Classic):
Install free Classic Text-To-Speech engine
Install a Mobile Voice, such as US English, German, Mandarin, ...
On Android 2.2 goto Settings -> Voice input & output -> Text-to-speech settings
On Android 2.1 and earlier install the free TTS Service Extended App and open TTS Service Extended
Enable Svox Classic TTS engine at the bottom of the screen
Go to Default Engine and select Svox Classic TTS
Go to Default Language and select the language for which you have purchased a voice
Click on "Listen to a preview" to hear a short greeting.
If the voice you hear is not the voice you purchased, try the following: select Pico again as default engine and play a preview, then again select Svox Classic as default engine and play a preview
Uncheck "Override App Settings"
Open an app such as TalkToMe or uNote, enter a text and enjoy your new Mobile Voice reading it aloud
well it is only $2 so I tried it out, and I am also having problems trying to make it the default voice for Nav..etc it just will not do it. I have dl all the apps that the programs wants for proper operations but it is still a no go.
I followed the instruction on the www and also from the above post of JW and still no replacement of stock voice.
will keep working on it heck maybe it is not meant for nav replacement eventhough it say it will do that.

No. It is. I have read about others having the same issues. Apparently froyo 2.2 fixes the problem. Since it was only 2 bucks I decided to wait until 2.2 hits before digging deeper.

Yea I was thinking the same, must be a 2.1 thing and 2.2 should make it work, since some of the people that got it working have Evo's.

The standard voice is just terrible compared to SVOX though. Froyo can't come soon enough for me
Same issue.. not able to replace Pico TTS by SVOX for Google NAV...
Moto Defy Android 2.1 in French
- TTS Service Extended App
- SVOX Classic text to speech
- Configuration as described on svoxmobilevoices(dot)wordpress(dot)com/how-to-use
Should be 2.1 issue in Android settings for Voice synthesis, but don't understand why TTS service extended does not succeed to force the setting..
I've read about some potential locale settings issues compare to language selected in TTS Extended (I mean settings specific for countries and languages in the phone compare to TTS extended settings)...
Does someone know something about that point ?

It works in 2.2
Either wait for official Froyo release or root your phone and use a custom ROM. All custom ROMS will work (that I've tried).
I'm on Viper 3.0.3 now (DK28).
I hear that the official Froyo is releasing around the 26th. SVOX UK voice is PERFECT, by the way.

Sprint Visual Voicemail to text trial expires in 3 days.. what happens next?

What happens when my free trial runs out? This service is laughably bad to the point of being usable ONLY as a source of comedy. I am not interested in paying for this.
Will it just stop working or is it going to keep working and start charging me money without my permission? Should I just uninstall it now? Can anyone recommend a suitable replacement visual voice-mail app?

Google voice hands down...
I would suggest (personal opinion on style and battery usage) installing the installing the inverted version here just because black looks slicker and causes less work for the screen.

When I signed up it said that when my free trial was up I would be presented with an option to continue the service or to cancel. They specifically stated that there is NO automatic billing once the trial is up.
How do I go about removing the sprint app? I tried dragging it to the trash can and that didn't work.. I have sdx stock app remover, but I don't see anything obviously titled "voicemail" or some such..
also, google voice setup is stuck at "verifying phone number" been that way for at least a minute now.. long enough for the screen to turn off
edit: yea, that google voice isn't installing.. I'm going to try the market version, then come back to the inverted version at a later time.. I really hate non-black themed apps too..

try setting it up on a computer and skipping that step on your phone. I only ever did that set up when I was dealing with a non-smartphone.

The stock app is called cm-android. And you can try this apk. Its the inverted and I edited it to have a transparent widget. I just put it on mine and it installed fine.
disregard this post.. **** was going bad here.. but its better now.
OKAY, installed
Thanks gitusum.
Still not perfect.. I tried a test call and my hilarious outgoing greeting is gone.. replaced by some generic woman and there is no option to even leave a voicemail, she just says something like the call failed, please try again.
well okay the good news is that I'm back where I started with the stock sprint voicemail to text app.. With my hilariously rude outgoing greeting!
I don't know why, but forwarding my voicemail to google simply was not working.
Work is over, so I quit for today. Will try again tomorrow. Thanks for the help everyone!

Did you set it up /w voice.google.com first? Setting up through the app itself doesnt work all that well IMO. Once it is setup you can just skip the voicemail setup step if/when you reinstall. I just pressed activate google voicemail on this phone. It then should make you dial a #. After that it is done.
yea setting it up through the voice app doesn't work but setting it up on a computer did. It's just that dialing the code to forward voicemails to google voice doesn't do anything but break my voicemail.
If I call my number I get some kind of cut-off error.. it sounds like "-all could not be completed, please try again" with no option to leave a voicemail. The code to deactivate the voicemail forwarding works fine at restoring the original sprint voicemail service.

My week with Gingerbread :^(

As we all know Gingerbread has been in the oven... And I was one of those people who could not wait for it to cool off. As soon as I saw the leak early saturday morning, I was already downloading. what could go wrong, right? I odin'd the ef02.tar, started her up and wow, she's beautiful, save the extra ugly 4g symbol in the window sill (notification bar) that looks even worse now than previous desserts.
Keep in mind this is a stock .tar. No root. No cwm. No nothing. Except bloat. Low and behold my beautiful lil girl had a very serious functionality flaw. After my first reboot, no more incoming phone calls :^(...
So I've tried everything, I gained root, installed cwm 3.1.0.1 wiped data, cache, dalvik multiple times. Re odin'd the .tar. Flashed Decad3nce's odexed and deodexed roms. Updated modems. Tried frozen on ec05, took a shot at simply AOSP, odin'd a stock ec05, even went all the way back to eb13, with cwm 2.5 (changing file systems when needed) now I'm back to a bone stock ec05 from the stickies in development... Still no incoming phone calls. I called sprint technical and they were unable to resolve the issue.
Funny thing is I can make calls, I have data (3&4g), I can text, just won't receive.
Has anybody else seen anything remotely close to this. If so please comment, if not, comment anyways. I wanna get some opinions on my situation.
P.S. feel free to laugh at my short comings, lord knows just thinking about it brings chuckles to my mind...

You know, i did install google voice. But ive installed it multiple times until now, so i figured it was unrelated. But this past time it did take my texts through there, which had never happened before. thats why i uninstalled it. Im gonna check that out and see if it fixes it. Good luck with your issues.
Sounds like you clicked yes to Sprint integration (ports your number temporarily to google). So they go to your google voice account, however you can check an option to have them sent also to your phone as well (although if you do this with google voice installed you will probably get 2 notifications per 1 sms). Also call screening is an option that is enabled by default, option in google voice (desktop web interface). I had to turn that off too (the press 1 thing). Hope this helps, its just options. Also you could go online and disable the integration and go back to normal.
EDIT: Also make sure your phone is listed to receive calls in the web interface (via a desktop). I know it should do this by default but maybe it didn't for god knows what reason?

I remember when I did that... Sat there for an hour pulling out my hair before I realized I needed to click the number on the right side of the GoogleVoice Page to change the settings. Not my proudest moment.

I just came back from the sprint store, and none of there techs could give me anything in depth about google voice. They just said it was beta and somewhat "finneky" however my phone works perfect now. I had to use a pc at the store while I was warranting my samsung dock (fyi don't use desk dock with any charger other than tge one provided)

I am at wits end....

Typically i don't ask for help but this time i'm going to throw it out there.
Every time i receive a SMS message my phone reads it out loud. Like "text message from 134-123-7654, _____________" no alert no nothing just reads it out loud.
I do not have "talk back", or "sound back" installed on my phone. And i've fixed permission and verified all of the settings under the SMS app and "voice input/output" in the main menu....
any other ideas.

1) What SMS app are you using?
2) Don't tell your friends about this problem or you are certain to get 100 ill timed text messages that say things like "I love gay porn!" and "Man, it sure is roomy in these pants!"
Off hand my first guess is to completely uninstall the SMS app, make sure all the directories that save settings are deleted too, and reinstall. That's the first thing I'd do. If that doesn't work....I dunno....call a priest for an exorcism?

nope. The only thing i can think of is i installed that new cluzee app, the Siri knockoff.
Edit :
I think i may of found the problem. There is a "cluzee reader" setting that is on by default. I turned it off, i'll see what happens.
Doing a fresh ROM install or even reverting back to a working save are guaranteed fixes. I figured you'd rather not have to reset everything though.
I'd bet the cluzee setting you found fixes it though.
agg! this started happening to me yesterday... i did recently install cluzee and llama, but last i looked the "reader" was set to "off" in cluzee.... and none of my "accessability" things are trned on..... i see that unsder <settings><voice input and output> under output that pico TTS is installed but "always use my settings" box is unchecked.... really annoying at work when i get a text.... thank goodness it wasnt a personal message or what not... aside from reloading everything - is there any other settign i should check. im useing the factory "messaging" app on my MTS4G...

hi,
ok it seems its some bug ?
This is wat i did,
on device.. settings/accessibilities /Services... turn off all "Services apps that is enabled.
eg. i had under Services.. Pushbullet, Greenify, Enhanced Sms. & Caller id etc. etc enabled. I had to turn them all off. Working 100%
Good luck
I found that the settings of text-to-speech options affects the talking calculator.
I just changed the language from English to any other language, then the calculator spoke the other language.
So, if the text-to-speech is turned off, the calculator will be quite. But no idea how to turn this off...

hi,
it is logical that if caculator "speaks" numbers etc. it is using a text to speech voice option. eg On my device Note 4 or my Note 3 or other, i have Samsung voice, Google voice or SVOX installed. If i disable it a lot of my apps won't work. This is not what is causing problem. (If you search around xda threads you will find thread where this solution was posted, unfortunately i did not save link at time) Try option in my post above and you will most likely see it works, but you have to turn off all apps listed in services.( The text to voice is mere a tool)
good luck

OMG
i've been crazy lurking around for the possible solution of this stupid voice text on my calculator as well.
I had made a thread regarding this and people from here has no idea about the solution for this problem.
i went to the settings, manage apps, all and deleted google text to speech and disabale samsung text to speech.
thats the time it will stop working. BUT, once you close all your recent used apps the voice message will go back again! WTF!
after how many centuries of searching for a solution, finally!!!! the horrible voice is gone when pressing the
stock calculator. downloaded dodol launcher and used it for 3 days and uninstalled it!
voila!

A user of my rom was having the same issue. So I fixed it.

It will work on an Odexed ROM also. Just rename or delete original stock calculator apk and odex. Then flash or extract fixed calculator apk and copy to system/app and reboot! !!

that worked! Awesome thanks
Finally figured it out on my device, it's the samsung text to speech engine causing this issue. Since I'm rooted i froze it through bloat freezer and it worked perfectly. I still have google text to speech enabled and that doesn't interefere.
