Okay, so let's say you want your phone to seem to a Samsung rep to have never been rooted or messed with in any such fashion.
What exactly, all in all, would you say you would have to do to get it back to such a condition after having been rooted?
I assume it is something like,
Reset the counter with a usb jig
flash original firmware
But it would not surprise me if there were other loose ends that could end up messing you up as well, so I thought I'd ask.
edit: Wow am I ever bad at posting in the wrong forum, sorrry, should have put this in Q&A.

I noticed because when I bought it it was heavily modified & rooted running Gingerblur, already had clockwork installed so I went to flash a clean sbf with rsd and could not get it to enter rsd mode. Finally I realized it was because the volume button dosen't work. I have a feeling its not hardware related and more likely someone that didnt know what they were doing fooling with things.
Does anyone know a way I can fully restore it without using the volume rocker? When I called back the guy that sold it to me he claimed I have to install rom manager and load a image and that will fix it but he probably dosent know what hes talking about.
Does it have tenfars CWM installed already? If not, can you install it? With it , you can reboot directly into cwm recovery and do a factory reset / data wipe or flash something else through update.zip

Yes it has it installed already but without functioning volume up/down buttons I cannot select any files or options?
Doh forgot about that... how about Factory Data Reset through the regular settings menu? On mine it's in the Privacy Settings.

Yah I tried that a couple times. Rocker still dosent work. Took it to my local cell phone repair shop and they said its hardware related. Dosent make sense though since water damage indicator is white and phone appears to be in brand new physical condition like its never been dropeed or damaged. But it has been hacked as i see system recovery and its rooted with gingerblur.
The person that you bought the phone from could have pressed way to hard on the button and broke it without even knowing it.

+1 probably hardware related...
but if you want to try one more thing, might go the official motorola update software route here...
http://direct.motorola.com/hellomot...SoftwareUpdateforATTATRIX4Gversion.4.1.83.pdf
RSD restore it and call it in on warranty. Used phones still have warranty protection.

Thanks for the suggestion but it says there is no software update available when i connect it. Anyways I took it to att warranty center they said they will send out replacemnet and that software related stuff should not affect my warranty. A little worried though since it says gingerBLUR on boot up. Wish I could restore this somehow.

About the gingerblur bootanimation, use rootexplorer to remove the bootanimation.zip.

Ok I have root explorer. What exactly should I do?
If you still have the phone I remembered that you can enter rsd mode by enabling usb debugging then clicking start on rsdlite. It'll reboot into rsd protocol mode.
if it is the rocker that's gone, its only a module and theres only 6 screws to totally disassemble the phone. no void stickers either. my phone's rocker button was broke to when i bought mine used. i just disassembled and reassembled and it was magically fixed! theres nothing scary about taking it apart either
Did you find a solution?
I am in the same boat. I need to use this piece of c**p for a month before I switch to galaxy s3. Please assist.
Hey there.
Just wondering is a factory reset does any harm to a phone, or is it perfectly safe? You see, I've performed one factory reset on my phone - was worried about stuff being transferred across that shouldn't be, and I've set it up again. However, I mustn't have unchecked the restore from backup box when setting up my phone, and it's downloaded every single app I've ever tried whilst being on the Android platform. I don't want to manually have to delete everything, so I was wondering if I could perform a second factory reset and start afresh?
So yeah, is the factory reset safe, and does it just set my phone back to how it was out-of-the-box?
Thanks.
Of course it's safe. Don't be paranoid. Just enjoy your phone.

And it just sets it back to how it was when I first took it out the box, right?

Assuming you haven't flashed another ROM, in which case it will return you to the "stock" installation of that particular ROM.
haha i deserved that.
okay cool, I'll do a second factory reset then and start afresh. and then hope my new SIM arrives tomorrow so I can actually use the phone

Yes you lose root and don't use factory reset. Kies is better.... And root takes like 30 seconds... come on!

Lol.... Yes Root is easily obtained but I'm on the road and am trying to rid myself of this lag and don't have my laptop handy! If factory reset doesn't help I think I will exchange my s4!

A factory reset would leave your device status as official still?
I'm sure a using kies would be a better choice.

Don't do a factory reset on the road. It still has the Samsung with the unlock logo if you do factory reset.
Also you might run into the initial setup crashing which eventually you will need to use Kies method...
Just saying there is a possibility. I created a lag guide in the General Section... See if any of those tips help.
Factory reset does not unroot. You just have to redownload superuser from market place.

ok so i wanted to try this new kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596496
and i installed it but my nexus 4 wouldnt boot so i went back into recovery and installed my other kernel which was working before. but now it wont boot. stuck on bootlogo forever. what do i do.
Do you have a nandroid you can restore?

There must be a misunderstanding, so I better ask: Are you stuck on the bootlogo or in bootloader mode? You can turn on/off your device right?

yes sorry i meant on bootlogo. i can still go into recovery i think but whenever i reboot it never fully boots
Never mind.
Do you know Wug's Nexus Toolkit? Use this to flash a factory image. It is the easiest way if you arent familiar with adb and stuff.
Much better to learn how to flash a factory image with fastboot. You can probably save your data by flashing a cm compatible kernel in fastboot

You'r welcome, mate. I'm sorry for your pics. Also happens to me once. That's evil, but a man must experience this once a life
I recently rooted my note3 and installed xpose framework and other tweaks. i later realised that my power button cant lock and put my device into my lock screen.
the power button still works for everything else and i have a software button to bring it to the lock screen which i made using the "greenify app".
whats causing this and is there any fix? or any ways to put the device into safe mode ans see if this is caused by some faulty tweak? bug?
Summary:
"Power button works for everything except putting the phone to lockscreen/screen blackout"
Basic solution is to go to security and check "power button instantly locks" something like that.

I removed all my modules and root permissions and used super user to remove my root.
Ive backed up all my data, removed my root access and im planning to do a factory reset. That should fix it right? Is it possible to soft brick my device this way?
Im fluent when it comes to jailbreaking but still a total noob with rooting.

Factory reset will delete all data photos, music, vids, contact and messages etc. If you've backed up everything then you are good to go for factory reset and will welcome you back to fresh out of the box phone. And no soft brick can occur by doing this.

I discovered that if I renamed the boot animation qmg file under \system\media , the screen won't turn off. Once I restored the file, all is well.
Why is this?
how to i reset all this without doing it manualluy?
I'm assuming it's coded as most hardware functions are. Anyway applause for finding the solution on your own, well done.
