A co-worker just came back who just picked up a new Iphone 4S from AT&T. We both ran our speed tests at the same time and I was ranging from 100kbs to 300-400kbs and he was getting 1.5mbs to 3.5mbs on 3G.
This is just sad. The only good thing is, I try to stay on wireless when I can so I don't have to worry about network speeds. This is after seeing that Sprint network site that says there's like 23 3G speed improvements done here recently.
I'm in downtown KC. I kinda figured they'd make sure their corporate headquarters network speeds would be pretty good...
You need to compare his 3G to your 4G. He's probably really on AT&T's 3.5G (H+) which is comparable to Sprint's "4G".

Well if that's the case, then I was getting 5mbs on 4G. Too bad I can't leave that on, it'll drain my battery.
Sad but true. I use wifi for a lot of data too.

Just means he will hit his data cap fast imo. Id rather use my phone all month at slow speeds instead of faster speeds for 2 weeks.

lol! What??? Why would you want slow speeds, but no cap? It'll take your entire billing cycle to hit the same "limit" that AT&T enforces.
It doesn't matter what speed your using as to when you'll hit your data cap before someone else or not. It matters how much you use your phone. I could use a 2G phone and hit a data cap in a day.

Completely serious we live out in the country so our internet options are dialup satellite or 3g and u only get 5 gigs on our data card so we dl everything from our phones

I have noticed a HUGE dropoff in connection speeds this month. I used to be able to pull close to 1000kbps during the day, but it has dropped to about 100-170kbps since earlier this month.
My friend said that there was a show on the radio that was talking about this issue Sprint and apparently Verizon customers have had. I live in southern california to be specific, if that changes anything.
I tried everything to improve my 3G like flashing radios/PRL/etc but to no avail.
When I speedtest late at night around 1am, it pulls upwards of 1000kbps with the same signal strength. Peak hours are obviously having a huge impact on the network... Maybe the recent iPhone influx? Not sure but my 3g has been crawling lately, really bugging me. I also don't have 4G in my area.
I walked into a Verizon store with a pal the other day, the Rezound pulled some rediculous numbers on 4G. Wish I had that...
Have you guys tried this? http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/01/how-to-get-faster-3g-speeds-and-better-music-streaming-on-your-rooted-htc-evo-sense-only.html

A friend traded his EVO 4G for a Nexus S last month. He went from 100-300kbps as we are all used to on the EVO 4G to now getting up to 1500 kbps on 3G with the Nexus S.
I know my 3G speeds were much faster before a few updates ago. I now use 4G and WiFi when I can. It would just be nice if 3G speeds were reasonable.
I am also in the KC area.

that's pretty over the top. alot of isp's for cable/fiber/dsl have 250GB caps per month now. I hit about half that and i download a ton of HD movies and tv shows with att uverse.
how many roms are you downloading? there arent that many active evo roms nowadays compared to earlier in the year.
it sounds more like you're using torrents constantly and have your client open 24/7 to be hitting that high per month. which is a horrible thing to do on a mobile network.

So far on 3g I've never broken 1000kbps. yes thats kbps.
I just ran a few speed tests again.
5 out of 6 bars.
3 tests run.
Highest download speed: 26 yes TWENTY SIX kbps.
Upload was the normal 147.
IS THIS THE ENHANCED 3g/4g experience I'm paying for?!?
Sprint 3G sucks pretty badly compared to AT&T and T-Mobile. I've seen AT&T phones get over 1500kbps way more often than not.
With my phone I consistently get under 1000kbps with good signal areas giving me over 1300kbps and up to 2000kbps if I'm lucky.
Yeah, this was one of the major disappointments of coming from tmobile with 2-6mbps dls and not realizing how slow cdma 3g data was..probably the main reason im getting the g2 soon.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Ha, I just got 592 down and 87 up.
Honestly, though, my house sucks for signal quality. My AT&T phones could barely even make a call out of here. My Epic sounds basically like a land line in comparison. But yeah, data speeds suck. It's not the Epic's fault.
Luckily I have wi-fi at home and at work and I'm in a 4G area otherwise.

You're comparing 2 gsm providers with a cdma provider. Cdma is not real 3g, so their gsm speeds are always better...personally sprint gives me the best service of verizon, usc, or att. My phone rarely drops below 600dl. One of the places I work I get decent speed at 1700 down (still upload capped). The 1 time I got no upload cap, my phone must have been downloading an update from Sprint (DI07) cause I got prompted to install it shortly afterwards. This has to account for something... I'll patiently wait for the fix though as I love the phone and rarely upload anything. E-mails still send fine (no pics, just text for work).
Is anybody experiencing pathetic download speeds on 4g? I've been getting 128 kbps down the past two days (prior to this speeds were excellent). Upload speeds are good, so i'm inclined to think that this is a local issue? Any ideas?

yo
my 4g speed hits 10-11mb/s on average right here in fort worth, right around the 820/35 area and pretty much up and down 820, all the way to jackborrow (sp)?
haven't tried downtown area yet but ill test it out and let ya know
Mine is very hit and miss the last few days. I will have periods of good speed, then it slows to a crawl. With tethered downloading I especially notice an initial burst of speed, then at times it slows to 10kb/sec =(.
Well i just found this snippet from some article
Clearwire told Electronista:
Throtting is based on the current utilization for each cell tower, and many low-use towers do not throttle speeds at all. For high-use towers, throttling occurs during peak-use times.
A customer’s maximum speed is based on the number of gigabytes of data transferred in the past seven days and the download speeds for the past 15 minutes. Speeds are recalculated every 15 minutes, at which point a throttled customer will be bumped up to a higher speed. Rather than implementing one speed for throttling, the calculations will move customers between 48 different speed brackets.
The worst offenders using peer-to-peer software on Clearwire’s network may face repeated throttling.

My data speeds have gotten slower and slower over the past couple of months. I cant even stream a youtube video without it buffering to hell. WTF SPRINT! I know I cant be getting throttled hell my billing cycle just started.
My speeds go up and down.. Some days thier fast and smooth and some days their just slow and laggy. I dont get it...
Yeah I have the same slowdown for my data speed as well. First I thought it was just me and all my flashing addiction but after seeing this glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.

Have you paid attention to what time of day data speed slows down? Could be just the network being overloaded in your area. For example I start work at 7am and if I run a SpeedTest during 6:50a-8ish I am in the 700-800kb range in my office. If I run the same test after 10a I see anywhere from 200-500kbs. The worst is near lunch hour and after 3pm....damn kids! lol

This is what happens when carriers keep adding subscribers, but are unable to keep their backhaul data pipes expanding. They need subscribers in order to build infrastructure, so we the consumer suffer in the meantime.

I also have to imagine that Android being Sprint's biggest smart OS doesn't help. WinMo/BB just kind of idles when it.. idles. Android on the other hand is built to have constant background data updating, now add a bunch of both old and new subscribers who don't know better and leave the short default polling of their thousand and one apps, and you got a scaling problem.
Its quite annoying. Forget trying to stream anything its pointless lol. There was a point where I could watch netflix with no buffer, now it takes it like 20 minutes just to get to the point where itll actually play. I dont even use it much anymore because as soon as it finally plays the buffer will kick right back in. DAMN I really dont want to have to get this AT&T DSL garbage.
Same issue with me in Wisconsin.

I noticed my 3g going to crap over the past month because I stream Pandora all day. Plus just looking at the bars I could tell the signal was not as good (I haven't run any speed tests).
Discovered today however that my 4g now rocks! I'll be using 4g as often as possible now. I didn't notice a big difference in battery drain because while 3g struggled, 4g flew, so I think that evened out.
This is my subjective opinion of course.

Our phones capable of taking advantage of that at all?
Maybe faster speeds? Maybe that is why my data kept dropping today.
It might mean better speeds all around, but wondering if this is something where the device/hardware has to be capable of supporting such speeds. Roommate has a g2x, being that it's so new i'm telling my roommate to run a couple speed tests. Of course he is pissing around about it.
Edit: Here in pittsburgh at 1 a.m. both our phones (g2 and g2x) are stuck on EDGE. Obviously the 3g is down for the upgrade, yay! Of course we're not gonna see a number even close to 42mbps. When it was at 21mbps we didn't even see that. We saw numbers at 5-8 average. With the increase, hopefully Tmobile's network can go head to head with Verizon's LTE cause its damn impressive. If we can at least hit 12mbps, we'll be good!

I think because there is a difference between mbps and MBPS. I don't think anyone thought it would go that fast from the getgo. But before I used to get 1 to 4 mbps, now since testing about twenty different times all over the city the past 12 hours, it is consistently 3 to 8 mbps. Big change here.

The difference is b versus B (lowercase versus upper case)
Mbps = megabit per second
MBps = megabyte per second
1 Byte = 8 bits
But in talking about data transfer rates, Mbps is pretty universally used. Often, people get lazy and just type "mpbs" when it should really be "Mbps".
But technically, the lower case "m" is not correct. It symbolizes 1/1000th, like millimeter (mm). Uppercase "M" as the prefix symbolizes one million, very different. But there really is no such thing as a thousandth of a bit. So when "mbps" is typed, its usually understood that it means megabit per second.
Not for our android devices. Only for that Rocket 3.0 thing sadly.

They keep on getting better and better with connections (4G, LTE, etc) but sometime soon the batteries need to catch up with that development. All the people I know with EVO's can barely last the day. The HTC Thunderbolt apparently has HORRENDOUS battery life when using the LTE network. Browsing and such is amazingly fast on it, but it ruins the battery life. I don't see the point in using these blazing fast speeds when the phone itself lasts half a day.
In general all this pisses me off. The connections keep getting better and faster, yet we keep getting more and more caps and restrictions placed on it to barely even utilize it. It's really getting out of control and ridiculous IMHO.

I think most people just accept that cell phones are supposed to last only a day. I dont think it's on any carriers/manufacturers priority list. It's just accepted knowledge at this point. Were not using piece of garbage clamshell razors that can last 3-4 days no more sadly I mean really when you look at how advanced and how much our phones can do, it really is a miracle of god that it can even last a day with such a small form factor and battery.
G2 and G2x can only run 14.4Mbps that's the max for our phone just the new vibrant 4G can run to 21.+Mbps and those 4G cell site upgrades aren't for the releasing of Rocket 3.0 only, android phones, tablets, web connect and anything that t-mobile sells that has web are all included.

At least the new rate plans that rolled out Sunday have a 10GB option. I would prefer a true unlimited option, but at least it is not going the other way like ATT and Verizon with smaller data allowances and overage charges.
I do HATE the new advertising though. We are now supposed to answer the phones with "thank you for calling T-mobile, home of the $10 unlimited data plan". I'm sorry but 200MB is not even in the same ballpark of unlimited.
I can confirm speeds now of around 6-8 Mbps. Pretty nice bump. I do agree with the unlimited thing being BS. All the carriers but Sprint have jumped on the cap wagon. That being said, I'm liking the new speeds. My wife has the Thunderbolt but I can still laugh at her pathetic "3G" speeds. (LTE is not here in Portland, OR and won't be for some time) Now if we can only hit that 12 Mbps mark.....

Before, my average speed was 1-3Mb/s and 6Mb/s was something that I'd only get for wifi or maybe at like 3-4am on my way into work, I consistently hit 5-6 all afternoon yesterday. Its exactly because speeds are getting faster that they are breaking it down to different plans. They don't want the network going down.
Guy at radio shack showed me his new pseudo Epic with Gingerbread. He's on LTE here, while Spring's 4G is never to be seen (just a test market downtown).
Speedtest.net 2x
25 MB/s
30 MB/s
Damn!!! Faster than my 15 MB/s Knology fiberoptic.
Have no idea howmuch data I actually use... wonder how often I'd bust 5GB in a month. Maybe a Verizon Nexus Prime is in my future....

Holy balls that's faster than my class 10 sd card. Verizons 2 gig cap must be reachable in a couple minutes lol

I'm assuming you mean mb/s.
yeah, if you ran a speedtest.net (or from the app) test it would be 30mbit not MB.. still, pretty dang fast for a phone, 2-5gb on vzw wouldn't take very long to eat up with speeds like that..
Yep gotta love companies that tout super fast speeds and phones that can use Netflix, Pandora, and everything else
Only to cap the data.
It's like going to an All You Can Eat buffet but you can only get one plate.
I really don't see why they keep releasing new phones because eventually the technology will outgrow their service and then you'll be ****ed sideways. Why not release a new phone every 6 months instead of every month and then spend money to improve towers and bandwith so they CAN handle all this bull**** without capping people's speeds?
Companies amaze me nowadays.
Geez that's my Comcast speed! Vzw must make a killing on overage charges. My friend gets a max of like 15 on LTE and I can only get a max of like 12 of 4G.

I was thinking more of an all you can eat in 10 min buffet.. but same idea i suppose..
lol like everyone elsr is saying, 2gb of data would be eaten up in minutes with speeds like that

With Sprint its like having an all you can eat buffet but having a slower chef.
With verizon and the rest its like having an extremely fast cook he's only able to feed you a small amount

Yeah, or like having a really fast, cool car and only getting to drive it 1 mile a day.

Now you all know it costs Big Red, Big Blue, and ol' yeller a ton of cash to provide us those blazing fast speeds. Thats why they rape and pillage us of all our cash.
For me when I can get 4G, I usually am around 4 - 8mb dl, and 1 - 3 up. 3G is consistantly .7 - 1.2mb dl and .5 ul. Usually enough to stream video.
Agreed, sprints service is more than fine for streaming dling or whatever. Unless you have a grandfathered data plan on vzw you are screwed with lte because yes, you will blow through 2gb in a day with that sort of speed. I've pulled 12mbps on wimax which is plenty fast for a phone right now unless you are using it to tether as your main internets too...
This is why I am likely going to unsuspend my vzw account when lte drops out here. These boosted epics aren't going to be able to keep up in another 6 months to 1 yr if they last that long sooo... I have a grandfathered plan and comcast cable modem SUCKS. Can't get fios out here and before we moved I was getting 4-5mbps torrent downloads. Comcast is 1mbps at most... I can see going through 100gigs a month easy on unlimited lte and I have seen posts from people who have.
