which apps/service can I remove? - Nook Touch General

On my rooted NST there are a number of apps I do not use:
Music
Contacts (can't sync with google contacts)
Socials ("Socials is not applicable for this product)
I also notice that it's running several services:
CloudService
TTS Service
AFfileDownloaderService (what is that?)
WaveformDownloaderService (what is that?)
Question: Is it safe to remove the three apps and to remove/freeze(eg. via Titanium backup) the four services? I know that some apps (eg google talk) is needed for the market and I don't want to end up with a bricked NST. At the same time I do notice that when I use SystemPanel to "end task" by removing AFfileDownloaderService, WaveformDownloaderService and a number of other apps, NST still runs, memory frees up and CPU usage goes down (=battery), whic is the main reason I want to do this (but these apps & services restart when I reboot...).
Any suggestions & advice is most welcome. Thanks!

I'm wondering the exact same thing. Once I have some extra time to tinker I'm thinking of making a new backup of my nook and just going for it.

Android 2.1 default Apps (Google + MotoBlur)

Hi,
I have deleted some apps with Titanium Backup, but I can't restore them. Restore button does not work on my Titanium Backup (with some apps).
Anyways, it was quite stupide what I did, since MotoBlur was pissing me off with their retarded apps, so I kept removing some stuff and now I have some problems (such as syncing with the Market)...
I was wondering if someone has the following apps (or advice how to get them):
- Google Calendar (I now only have "contacts" and "mail" when I try to sync)
- Google Gallery (I don't have a default gallery anymore)
I could care less about the other removed apps.
Can anyone help me with these 2 apps (so I can sideload them). I would really appreciate.
Thanks in advance (will post in general if no responses).

How to uninstall default applications from Archos 70 Internet Tablet

Does anyone know how can I uninstall the default applications like browser, video player, photo viewer..etc on a Archos 70 Internet Tablet?Has already someone tried this before?
You cannot remove them because they are baked into the read only system image.
a) you can hide them, with the +rw rooting package: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930197 but it doesn't give you more disk space
b) you can use custom roms like urukdroid
It's your choice.
there is no software which can disassemble the rom from archos to get those out of there?is there a kitchen for archos's rom's?
Nobody has ever written that kitchen software. But this is what Urukdroid was made for
If you are rooted, titanium backup could do the job

On a related note: I have several apps installed for experimental purposes. I do not want these apps to be started (= become active) automatically.
The same goes for several standard apps. E.g., I often see tasks running for Gallery, Google services, Archos Firmware Update (pointless since I'm running UrukDroid).
Is there a way to prevent this?

Titanium Backup Pro.
Thanks for the suggestion.
As I understand it I can use this to freeze apps (make them temporarily unavailable). What I want is to just prevent automatically starting of an app, while the app is still available in the full app overview and can be started manually. Can this be done as well?

Sorry, I misunderstood what you wanted to do and I don't know of anything that will do what you want.
Don.
@sciurius:
Android was designed as an OS for mobilephones and they had slow external memory when this started.
So one of the esignes of android is that every sw dev can decide how much of the software should be in memory as long as possible by implementing parts as a so called service.
These get started everytime the device is run.
Other programs get started because they where started by you often, or because they answer to some systemmessages
First get some infos about "Autostart Manager" Apps, some work without root.
Might be interesting to get some infos and you might be able to even write somekind of artikel.
This one is in german, but you just use google translate.
Hi
I use android assistant (available on the market) with an option which may prevent some apps to start

Monitoring your battery after rooting tips

After rooting quite a bit of functionality is gained but unfortunately this can sometimes mean battery drain.
To keep on top of what's happening checkout "System Tuner". There's a free version in Market, use "Search Market" app if your Market searching is broke. Browse to "Startups" in the SystemTuner App.
Personnally I have disabled:
com.bn.demomode
Dialer
Docs to Go
Gmail storage
gReader
Reader
Google Talk Service
Dropbox - prefer to start it manually or use Opera Mobile
NewsRob - just in case even though sync is off
WaveFormDownloaderService - not sure what it is, seems to be ok without it
Can I disable:
Adobe AIR
DeviceManagerService - not sure what it is
But haven't disabled:
Download Manager - need downloads occasionally when on WiFi
Link2SD - not sure if required but leaving just in case
LBE Privacy Guard - I use this. A non active permissions manager would be better
Market - I guess it needs to be left enabled...
Sync Feeds - only seems to sync when on WiFi so that's convienient for RSS readers in particular
Settings - need in order to enable/disable WiFi
Now I need to figure out if I can disable:
Adobe Air (might be needed for ebook support & DRM?)
DeviceManagerService
Note that afaik this only disables things on startup, unlike freezing an app. So the app could relaunch. I'll have to investigate. NookTouch battery is very good though even with all this stuff running, being optimised for reading. To diagnose if something is eating your battery use "BetterBatteryStats" to look for wakelocks. The only thing this won't show you is if the Nook has somehow stopped going into deep sleep in the first place for some reason - that would show up as massive battery drain but no wakelocks.
Now, how do I delete & backup to /sdcard - /system/app/Phone.apk & TelephonyServices... I thought it was just a simple removal but I'm getting "cross-linked file"
edit: ^ I remember now. After remounting r/w you have to cp to backup and then rm rather than a straight mv.
Before making any changes I recommend inserting you CWM backup SD card and using the backup option to make a "nandroid" backup.

Asus Demo
No issues so far...if they come i'll post it here...
everything works well instead of asus launcher i use go launcher.
as i read the asus demo app installs the flashplayer and removes itself after entering the password no need to do that for me couse i use mxplayer and codecs.
Don't delete Asus launcher If you don't have any launcher installed and currently in use, it'll throw your device in to boot loop.
But Asus Demo is safe to delete.
I have the Lollipop .33 version as far as I tried if any app associated with quick settings is deleted, you can't go to Asus Customize settings and change the apps order anymore.
When you press Quick settings options it'll throw you an "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped." error. But apart from that it doesn't effect the system stability.
The .24 doesn't have this problem.
My suggestion is when you have a freshly and fully installed Lollipop .33 and want to delete some apps like Splendid, go to Asus cuatomize settings and change them to your liking first. Then you can safely delete system apps.

[qualcomm] (not rooted) list of apps safe to disable and how to backup stock

I have the unlocked version, am able to root, but I'd rather not break the warranty till I've used the phone for a bit and found it's ok. Is there a list of apps that are ok to disable, including both google and motorola apps? I don't know that I want to disable every package that contains the word 'motorola', or google... Plus I'm sure there are some that don't contain those words.
From what I've been reading google seems to collect all sorts of data from the phone whether you have set up an account or not. I'm trying to increase privacy on the phone in the meantime. I'm installing other open source apps in the place of the google ones (for maps, calendar, gallery, contacts, video, etc) and disabling the play store. I've noticed that I can disable a number of apps via settings-->apps or by using adb pm uninstall. I'm not sure if using pm uninstall via adb is better? It looks like it just uninstalls the app for the current user, which implies there are other users that can use the app? Is there a user other than me running behind the scenes?
If I remove the google apps can google still sync or read my contacts, calendar, app activities etc even when using different apps?
Sorry if these are dumb questions, I'm trying to understand how this works. It is interesting, but it is very different to try to understand something when you're not a programmer or don't have the tech background. I'm not terribly technical but I would like to understand what goes on. If this is the right place please let me know where to ask. I have been searching for info as well but not found answers.
