hi guys i have a galaxy s2 and now a not ive noticed that when playing videos the same that i have i have on the s2 the blacks seems to be blotchy on the note is this normal thanks guys
No, I've just played a couple of high-definition videos and they look perfect.
Try for example BBC One Human Planet trailer (look for that on youtube and download the 720p version).
It has many different scenes, with several fade to black transitions. When the video is black my screen is absolutely dark, as I expect from a super AMOLED.

I'm going to make the final decision on buying these... I rather choose both of this phone over iPhone.. The screen resolution is high and I love that !
Video playback & Youtube 60%
Call & Organizer 30%
Games 10%
I didn't care if it has qwerty keyboard or not. I did care a little on size of the screen but I really want the one that have the good video playback experience.
I saw many vid from youtube that the touch HD screen is kind of yellow.. I just wanna know that can I fix that sort of problem (well, it's a problem for me). I see that the X1 has the better contrat and more beautiful (as I see from youtube). I really like the 3.8 inches screen. Is there any color fix on the HD?
My HD doesn't have any yellowness with video playback .
Blacks and whites are both pure. I compared my HD video playback to a X1 and the HD wins handsout. Even if it's just the way bigger screen which is real comfortable with watching, it wins. And by having coreplayer you can just throw any divx movie at it and it'll play it without stuttering.
Performance wise there isn't a whole lot of difference though.
--Edit
To improve performance with video playback on your HD you should do some minor tweaks which will help alot, like the SD Tuneup tweak. Theres a thread on improving video playback and how you do it aswell.
I watch load of films on my HD and I have never noticed a problem with yellowness. Then again I have not seen the screen of the X1.

antrak, never sure whether to install SD tuneup on the phone or the card, which do you recommend?

It's supposed to be installed on the internal memory (phone) which will then allow for faster file access on your card.

I have both an X1 and a HD, I just compared the 2 and the X1 has a slightly higher contrast. The HD still looks better then the X1 though cause of the screen size and is much more comfortable watching.
Too bad I don't have a camcorder otherwise I could post a comparison vid for you.

here this is what I mean.. It seem that the color and the contrast on the touch hd seem to be yellow. Look at the background when it is white on the iPhone.. I'm not sure about it, anyway thx about the replies : ) i don't know that it is like this or not

It's not as bad as it looks in that video. I only noticed that its not bright white yesterday when i had my Touch HD next to a Blackbetty 8900 and could see the blackberry was whiter. It's white but not as white as other phones, and certainly not yellow.
Looks to me more like the iPhone is too blue

There is absolutely no yellowness issue you mention. The HD movie performance are just insane, better than any currently available device - it's just awesome. I watch a lot of movies on HD and I'm always blown away with the quality.
The fact that you can use just normal DIVX movies from torrents is also very cool.
Also, as for the contrast / brightness, I don't know if you guys are aware, but you can actually control the color adjustments in Core player, and some of those presets do produce a punchier video image, more saturated, deeper blacks etc. Beware that using custom color adjustments can have a negative impact on performance in some cases. So, if you experience lag, just turn it back to "native".
Also, you need to take into consideration whether your device has auto-adjust brightness turned on, because it's possible that is reducing the overall image brightness.

There's no color problem. I guess the problem you saw was related to the white balance of the video (or maybe it is your LCD monitor)?
Anyway, mine is fine. The 3.8" screen is amazing for videos and there are no color problems. You don't really get to run 800x480 vids, that's too big.. But even smaller, e.g. VGA quality films look terrific. Remember that it's higher than the resolution of a TV set.
As for games.. If you want games - BUY AN IPOD. The HD / X1 are both based on WM and they are no match for the IPOD.
Hope that helps you..

Sure you do. Use h264 in mp4, run in wmp or album, and you get acceleration. Looks great, and you can re-encode ntsc DVDs (720*480) in 1:1, so no loss of quality through scaling.
Hello,
I was just wondering if it was possible for all youtube videos to play true fullscreen on the evo. Well, something like the iphone video resizing for all youtube videos. Is that possible?
Thanks
Turn your evo sideways in the youtube app.

I know that but some videos don't play totally fullscreen on the evo. The iphone has an option to make any video fit 100 percent to scale. Is there a way for the evo to do that
Oh I know what your talking about. Nope can't do that.

Its lame, but you can get the same result by actually going to view the video within the browser itself.
Just clico on hq and its full screen

Thats because the videos are 4x3, and you are watching them on a 16x9 screen. 16x9 videos will be full screen when you click the HQ button. 4x3 videos wont because that would be stretching the video and make it look awful.

It always astounds me how so many people would rather the video be stretched and distorted than have the black borders on the sides. Eh? To each their own…

lol me too. My best friend runs his PC to his tv and doesn't use the proper resolution so everything ends up stretched. He isn't even aware and doesn't seem to notice that everyone is extra fat, drives me nuts....
FWIW, the Evo's screen is actually 5:3 ratio, so almost any video content will need to be stretched or have some kind of black bars. Apparently the YouTube app doesn't support stretch.

Right? Almost no one in my family watches actual HD tv on our 50" plasma. It's such a waste IMO, and when I ask why they aren't watching the show in HD, they ask what the difference is and say they don't notice that the picture is stretched. Half the time, they say they thought they were watching HDTV. Or they say they don't care.
Seriously. There are 5 people living in my house, and I'm the only one who notices that standard definition looks terrible. WTF?
As for the black bars, some people think they're not seeing the entire frame of the video if their entire screen isn't filled. My dad used to insist on buying full screen versions of movies because he was convinced that the black bars in wide screen movies meant that the picture was being cut off, and he was only seeing half of it. As soon as I found out the real difference, I stopped watching full screen movies completely, but may dad still isn't convinced. Oh, well... What 'cha gonna do?
I just got my Note in the mail from Clove UK. And everything is great so far, and I dunno if this is and Android thing (This is my first Android device) or a Samsung thing. When I play videos from You Tube or videos that I encoded the blacks are heavily pixelated. (Not sure if that's a word). Am I doing something wrong? What program and/or setting is the best to get rid of that black pixel issue? The test video of the jelly fish works great. Noob questions I know! Thank in advance again for your help.
My guess is that its not directly your fault.
There are several aspects to think of here:
- It may be that artefacts (caused by video encoded in low bitrate) are more noticable on a screen like that of the galaxy note than others.
- It may be that youtube just delivers you the low quality version of the video.
- The video on youtube may be in bad quality to begin with, try other youtube videos and see if it happens only on a few ones or many.
- Note: I see now you already tried the video, so that is probably not a cause. (Your screen itself may have some flaws. Check on that for instance by using a screen test tool like "Screen Test" or playing the video already supplied with the Note (Open the standard video player app that comes with it and select "lightness & slimmess"))
When it comes to watching youtube on a mobile device I recommend (if you have a mobile data connection with enough bandwidth, such as good umts or hsdpa or Wifi) to enable high quality in the youtube app (whenever possible, use the youtube app, and do not play it in the browser).
To do this hit the options button in the youtube app, select settings and enable the first option to enable high mobile quality.
Secondly many videos will allow you to switch between lower and higher quality with the HD button on the upper left (visible at the start or when you tap the screen while palaying) - if you enable high mobile quality this should be turned on to high quality by default.
When it comes to youtube thats probably all you can do to improve quality.
When it comes to playing videos in general (excluding youtube) the standard player can manage most formats. However if you have trouble with some videos you may want to give Dice player a try!
Hope this helps!
Ok thanks, I will def try that!
I belive this is coursed by the hight res/density of the Note screen and low quality of the video in YouTube app, I think the highest quality of video in the YouTube app is only 480P.
I also noticed this problem while streaming old TV shows from PLEX to my Note, this is less noticeable with my Tab 10.1 with the same resolution but its screen is about 4 times larger.
You could use the stock or most aftermarket browser and watch 720P YouTube using Flash on normal YouTube site.
simple solution is to not use the app and just use a browser. ive had no issues watching 720p videos in youtube on the browser.

I have also experienced this on other vids and am convinced it may a bit depth limitation of the Note screen... but need to verify.

I've noticed this too with the You Tube app. The blacks sometimes are blocky. A good example is the Avatar 1080p trailer, especially around 15 seconds mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i2RCBa3l-g
If I view the same clip on You Tube via a browser (720p settings) it looks better, but the browser is a fiddly substitute for the app on a phone. It does seem to be mostly a bitrate limitation though, so maybe Google or a.n. other hacker needs to modify "HD" on their app to mean a higher bitrate, now we're defining 1280x800 as a mobile screen resolution .
[edit]
Actually, if I watch that Avatar clip in the browser with a playback quality set to 240p or 360p it obviously looks pixelated, but doesn't show the blockiness that's in the You Tube app stream. Looks like the app either is handling the stream differently (badly) or the stream itself is different to that which is sent to the flash plugin in the browser. Wonder if Google is using a different codec for their app. WebM maybe?
This includes video playback with all videoplayers.
I have to be honest and say I haven't seen any strange blockiness or banding in video playback in the chinese ICS leak.
Also "Screen Adjuster" from android market allows me to dim the screen a lot lower without the strange artifacts...
Anyone else noticing this?
i still got black blocks while watching videos.

No banding issues here either. Are you talking YouTube or your personal ripped movies.
I can't remember what software I used but most of my movies are 1gb+. Most are only 800*400(sgs2 Res) but play without black blocks.
Think I used handbrake or something. But xda app banding is completely gone as far as I can tell

Banding issues have been fixed with this release BUT I'm still getting issues with black clipping/crushing, as are quite a few other members. It happens outside the OS too on the battery charge animation so it's not an OS issue.

Hmmm, this so weird - I see what you mean about the battery charging animation as that still happens on my note too but in the OS I have observed great improvement.
Colour rendering is greatly improved on the chinese leak, the gallery has almost no issue compared to all the GB roms I tried, there is very slight issues in dark shadows but this is only when zoomed in compared to hitting you in the face in th GB roms.
Video playback is hard to tell as the stock player is broken, the youtube app though is awesome and a huge improvement over the GB version which had HQ that didnt even look like 360P now the HD mode looks like 720P at least and this looks great on the note. There is hardly any banding here and black levels are pretty good with hardly any of the effects shown in other roms.
There is still a hint of these issues but you do have to look pretty hard to find them now where they used to be so obviouse it took away from the video viewing experiance.
For regular video playback I use MX player, this is rendering better then it did on other Roms downloading a youtube video will playback the same in mx player as it does in the yt app. Before I had to dl yt videos or watch them in a webpage with flash to get proper hd quality.
Here is a good video to show this watch in the youtube app, the pure black skies do show some artifacting when looked from close up but these are just dark blacks and some very dark greys compared to some purples and reds that came up on my GB roms. Outside of the few black blotches all other colours don't show any real signs of banding.
You can then download this with tube mate in 720P and see how it looks in MX player or whatever you are using.
Hopefully by the the time the official update to ICS comes(March) it will be greatly improved.
cant watch supernatural on it ... as it has lots of dark scenes .. looks crap on chinese rom as well ... Super Amoled HD sux for videos and this is a hardware limitation .... RGB will fix it ...
Had the european leak. But the browser crashed all the time. And when calling someone, i had to use the speaker. So changed back to gingerbread

What videos do you guys/gals keep on your Nexus 6 to help show off how pretty the screen is?
Not necessarily movies or anything like that... Just high quality videos or clips to take advantage of the Quad HD screen...

THIS!! I've been wondering the same thing since I got mine yesterday! I downloaded a 1080p version of Guardians of the Galaxy and it looks good, not great. I've seen a couple YouTube videos in 2K but not enough to really show the screen off.
Used this one last night
This one has great visuals as well as sound. Great for testing the stereo speakers!
Here is a classic screen sample video
Optionally you can download a full quality video.
Is it true that YouTube only plays at 1080p on mobile?
YouTube 5.18.5 supports 2k, but only direct download yet:
