I was just about to post this myself
Article from engadget
Engadget
excellent news, especially for me since i decided to cancel my contract pre order and just get the play sim free
I have always dabbed into the root. My N1 was fantastic rooted and running CM. No need to now its on gingerbread.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I'm not getting a sim lock free play, hopefully the simlocked devices will be rooted soon to.
I was going to wait for the o2 version in white but glad I just ordered off play.com
Excellent news. Wish more manufacturers would follow suit. Next time my contracts up , I'll seriously consider SE now if they are going to continue with this.
Im used to the freedom with my n1. Its brilliant when you can do anything with your phone.
Any word if the US bound one (for Verizon) will have locked bootloader?
My guess is yes, but I really don't want to be right in this case...
Waitin for the CDMA version
The CDMA bootloader unlock is finished, check the Development section.
I was just wondering how many developers are using an Arc? (with developers i mean rom cookers)
--edit
wanted to post in general but was on the wrong tab
Ditto on this one, anything that springs to mind for future projects

I was more wondering what happens if we have root, ublocked bootloader. i am sure the arc has more horse power than what it has now. Maybe it's tme to learn how to build roms, i'm a Linux user so it doesn't have to be hard .
It would be great to see cyanogenmod on the arc or just tweaks to the OEM rom.
Hopefully all the X10 devs + some N1/Desire devs will come here.
All I know is that Paul from modaco is waiting like us the ''password'' to unlock his Play, knowing it's the same File System and protections he will produce exellent roms for us.
CM7 and MIUI will surelly be adapted.
I don't think the scenario of X10 will be repeated, many devs were willing to work on custom roms but the phone was locked for a several months so they abandoned and swaped their x10.
As for the ARC it all depends on SE, sooner they release the keys and better are the chances to get many roms, the more they wait and the less devs will support the Arc ...
It will be great to see great roms on the ARC like CM7 and MIUI. so all we have to do is wait on the unlocked bootloader. hope to see it get released soon
For exemple, HTC just unveiled the Sensation with the new high resolution screen, if it gets rooted before the Arc then I will swap my Arc with one of them

I think the bootloader will be locked, thats what it looks like. i just read tweets from paul about bootloader

So finally the Arc will be a great device for custom roms!
The hundreds of devs coming from HTC will preffer the build quality of the Arc over the cheapos LG and samsung

That would be great though there a lot devs with LG2X i had to choose between SE and LG but then i thought nice thing but it's LG
now HTC is locking everything devs would look at other phones. the Arc, Play and Neo are similar so i think if one has a custom rom porting it to another wouldn't be that hard
All im interested in atm is rooting
So does anyone have any idea of when we will get it rooted?

On the SE dev blog they said it will be ''later in spring''.
So if they want to keep their promise they have till 20th June max
I think I can smell it toward end May don't ask me why

No no, June is summer...end of May, TOPS!
I hope this time they will keep their promise and no postpone at all!
How many time they postponed release of phones,FW updates...?
But here if they want SE Arc to be a success even among dual core phones they should release the root before SGS2 enter the market because this one will be rooted in 24h
That´s true! Sony Ericsson MUST do this! Does the unlocked bootloader means root?
No but unlocking the bootloader means we can use fastboot command, any good dev can then build a root method in a couple of minutes or hours.
If Amon Ra and clockwork recoveries are implemented it's even better,we can then backup, wipe, format partitions to ext 2-3-4...on the phone itself exactly like on nexus one and desire
Custom Kernels will follow too, increasing battery life or overcloacking the cpu...
This dev section will have tons of roms to chose from

He also unlocked his xperia play, soon soon we will have root, roms, kernels haha
does anyone know if the xperia arc kernel has been released?
This might be old news (actually stated on 11 october), but I saw this today.
Motorola has stated that they will release the 2.3 update to (unlocked) UK Atrix in mid-november
Source
Is sure that the new update unlock the bootloader also for EU version?
I think I read that it will stay locked down. Not sure if its only locked so we only need to do the fastboot unlock, or if we still need IHOP..
If you read the whole thread it's getting very heated - Personally I don't think motorola will give UK the GB update.
The out of datrix will be the last motorola I ever buy. Never ever again. They can go out of business for all I care.
Shoddy

Shouldn't have bought it

That sucks that you guys have had to wait so long. It doesn't make sense since we've had gb here in the states for a few months and you haven't.
Wonder what the hold up is. Hope you don't have to wait much longer as it really makes the phone feel like a new device.
Sent from my MB865
The worst part is that they stated that it would be released at the same time in the US and the UK..

Listen I get that you are upset, but there's no way that any current Android phone is gonna have an entire lifecycle without at least one major update.
Don't get me wrong, its BS that you had to wait even this long for GB, but for what it's worth I chose to stay on Froyo for the longer stock battery life.
I'm gonna remain there until I get a more definitive answer in regards to ICS being OTA or CM for the Atrix...

Makes no difference to me, I've rooted & unlocked the boot loader(another stupid motorola trait) and have Gb on my Atrix.
Still won't be buying another motokak - just waiting for the Galaxy nexus to be delivered & I can consign the Atrix to the dustbin where it belongs.
Apparently it should come to all UK users (t-mobile, unlocked etc)
source
hopefully will be able to rip the radio from the update, as im sure there will be a new one, and for people who have unlocked their bootloader it might not be safe to do the OTA, like was the case for AT&T users.

I woke up in the morning with this news. I have to say that I was very disappointed. Even though I anticipated that HTC won't release an official ICS update for the Desire Z, this news still took a toll on me :-(
now all we can hope for is a better port from the devs (there're already good ICS ROMs for the Desire Z, the Icecream JIBwich ROM I am using is already much better than stock GB, but I do want to have a better camera driver)
well, for anyone who still hopes, at the very least, HTC haven't said that they won't upgrade the Desire Z, and there's still this petition
http://www.change.org/petitions/htc-release-an-android-4-0-update-for-the-htc-desire-z
Another thread about a petition?
no, I about the official upgrade list. In my opinion, the petition is one of the reasons HTC should NOT upgrade the Desire Z, if you look at the petition count.....
Desire hd is getting it so we are fine.

Then i misunderstood it. But to get back at a quote you say in your op. HTC never said that the DZ wont be getting the upgrade, there is always a chance of getting it. Unless you got source on that.

Dude calm down! it's just the first wave. I'm pretty sure HTC going to update our device later on. if not we still have CM9, Virtuous.. ect.
I think we will get it in the second wave imo
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA
I think the second wave has already been announced. It included the Desire HD and the Desire S. I might be wrong though.

Those devices are in the first wave, no second wave has been announced.
I hope we get an update soon.
Most of my friend with different HTC models get the update. I have the desire z and i got nothing up to now, except 2.3.3 last year.
Remember, HTC has never said that they've finalized the list of devices to be upgraded. We still might get it, we may not. Besides, enough phones will be upgraded to give us a 100% working ICS rom anyway from CyanogenMod and others.

Yeah, well, our phones are pretty old, two years now. Most companies rather just spend their money pushing their new line of phones instead. I use the Andromadus ROM and it works very well, running ICS 4.0.3
From the CyanogenMod Q&A
Q: [Device with less than 512mb RAM shipped] gets CyanogenMod 9?
A: No

You don't need to use CyanogenMod 9 to have ICS. And HTC Vision is listed with 512MB RAM anyways.
I am about to give up on cm9 and go backwards. I want a 1.6 super d rom from my g1 on my g2. Hell I might go back to eclair if I could, just to flash something different. ...
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
It is possible to port old roms but really... maybe I'm in the minority but there are so many roms to choose from on the g2 why are so many people hung up on needing a solid ics build. I get it the latest is the greatest but what more are you really going to get out of it? Plenty of amazing aosp, cyanogen based and sense roms out here that work amazing, how can anyone be so unsatisfied to want to go back to a donut rom?

Don't get me wrong ICX is brilliant. Iv'e been waiting since December for the Data Usage to be fixed (3G)...
It must be hard since even Sony have moved their official ICS release from March to this Summer.
When did this happen? I was really looking forward to ice cream sandwhich on my xperia play this month. So we now have to wait longer.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
I thought we get ICS at the end of April?
if your gonna drop a bomb like that please tell me you have proof?
I can't remember where I read this but sony said icx will be releases late april or early may.
Sent from my R800x using XDA
I'd love to have internet data whilst away from my Wi-Fi too. I'm sticking with ICX anyway as ICS on the Play is still going to have the standard Xperia skin job over the top
OS updates should make the device look completely different in my opinion as it makes it feel like having a new device. That's why I flashed ICX in the first place. That and it confuses staff in phone shops when it looks like a Galaxy Nexus . It should be like Xbox Live when the new update hit and changed EVERYTHING.
Alas, we can't change what phone companies decide to do with their products unfortunately.
