[Q] tether to epic 4g touch/ evo - Kindle Fire General

has anyone had any luck connecting the fire to an epic 4g touch or an evo? i have wifi tether on both and i've gone through the settings on both with no luck. I can get it to connect to the evo, but am still not able to access to internet but with the e4gt it doesn't even see the hotspot. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

I saw a thread in the Kindle Fire section of the Phandroid forums on tethering to a 4g phone; I don't have a 4g phone myself, so I can't vouch for it.

i don't have 4g on. also, i did see that post and tried it but no dice

I have an evo 4g, and have had no issues connecting to the wireless hotspot. I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 on the Evo if that matters.

yeah, i've been trying to use wifi tether but as soon as i turned on sprints hotspot it worked right away. i had forgotten about using hotspot since i never use it as i always use wifi tether for everything. just weird that it can connect to one but not the other.

I've connected using wifi tether and 4g with the evo

What version of wifi tether are you using on the evo? I'm using 3.1-beta6 and it won't work with for the Kindle to connect to.

Strange, still not working on my EVO 4G. Guess I should look into using a different ROM and/or kernel on it.

working on HTC Evo 4G
Never mind, got it working on my Evo 4G now.
I updated to WiFi Tether 3.1-beta7, and had to go under settings and make the following changes:
Device-Profile: HTC Evo 4G
Setup-Method: Softap (master)
Channel: 01 (2412 MHz)
MSS clamping: checked
Routing fix: checked (supposedly this is an HTC-specific option)
After modifying all these settings, I rebooted, started WiFi Tether & enabled tethering, and my Kindle Fire had no issues connecting to it!

Anyone know if this works on EVO 3D hboot 1.5 with the HTC unlock? I'm really trying to wait for a proper root, but I have a road trip coming up and I want to tether gps to my Kindle Fire.

Wifi tether xoom using an epic or any galaxy s?

so I think I remember doing this before I pushed the over clock kernal to my xoom. Has anyone been able to tether to their samsung galax phone succesfully and use the phones data instead of the xooms 3g? I am using the. 2.0.7 wifi app on the epic and neither wifi or bluetooth will connect. I can pair the bluetooth but there is no profile to enable tethering on the xoom.
If this has been posted before please point me in the right direction.

I'm having the same issues with my Fascinate.
Tethering no problem with my captivate running serendipity 5.12
I can use the Sprint Wireless Hotspot app on my Samsung Epic, Xoom connects to it fine.
For the wireless tether app, I had to install an experimental version on my Epic that will run in infrastructure mode because the Xoom wouldn't see the adhoc network of the normal version.
Samsung Vibrant stock OS set up as WiFi AP connected no issues.
The hotspot app with epic reports error 67... I don't have it setup through sprint I guess, but where did you get the experemental wifi tether? I can only find 2.0.7
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
OK so I restored my epic to viper from, which included wireless tether 3.0- pre **experimental**. Xoom found it and all is good. Thanks guys.

I tether to my Samsung Vibrant, standard Froyo Wifi Hotspot, works great.

Wireless Tether

Is there a way to have our Xoom connect to the wireless tether ad-hoc instead of having to uses native 3G mobile hot spot app on fascinate. I know when I had the galaxy tab someone made a wpa.supplicant (think that's how it was spelled) file to put somewhere in /system/? So it could connect to phones using wireless tether.

Only if your Xoom is Rooted can you connect to Ad Hoc after a minor hack.
Root your phone and use wireless tether 3.0
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
As everyone else as said before, the only way right now is through rooting.
Root your phone. It's easier and you can share with things other than your xoom then.

Have any of you been able to connect to an ad-hoc connection with a xoom? Most of the connections have been made through handsets that do not use ad hoc mode.

What "minor hack"?????
His phone is rooted already if hes already using the Wireless Tether App from the market.
He just needs to install the newest beta which has infrastructure mode instead of Ad-Hoc, and the Xoom will identify it without any hacks on the Xoom.

Thanks for the input, but these apps are phone specific. I'm well aware of the wireless tether apps, both for root and the experimental 3.0. I've tried just about everything out there and can't get the Xoom to see my CDMA Hero running AOSP 2.3.3. Even the bluetooth tether will not connect. My laptop sees it fine, my Xoom sees an EVO that uses wireless tether. I'm afraid I may have to ditch the old Hero...
You have used 3.0 pre 4¿ that's what works for me

Thanks again, pre 4 errors out. It does not support cdma hero. I'll b looking into settings on the Xoom now.

Wifi tether

I tried to tether with my evo using hot spot and wireless tether with no success. It works on my laptop but not on the zoom. Has anyone got it to work on zoom using evo? If so what settings?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
A friend of mine tethered off his stock evo just fine, no issues. Dont know his settings though, but since you can only select the security type, cant be much.
Works fine for me running xoom and evo unrooted. The xoom can't tell the economy from any other wifi but my second settings are just a standard named wpa2 set hotspot. Dhcp on, always in. Everyone in a while the xoom freaks out when the evo swaps between 3g and 4g but at worst in disable and re enable wifi and I'm fine. My second switches often since we don't officially have 4g in Columbus Ohio even though I have had signals most of the time since like last August.

Mine works perfectly tethered to my Evo running CM7.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Not sure if this was resolved, but I tether off of my EVO regularly, running CM7 stock.
OP, what setup are running on your EVO?
Swyped from my EVO
From what I gather, CM7 on the Evo has infrastructure mode wifi tether by default so Android devices shouldn't have any problems seeng the SSID (as opposed to Adhoc).
Also, the latest wifi tether version (direct from the code.google.com website) now does infrastructure mode, so you shouldn't have any issues as well.

I am running my 2.2 rls5 and I cannot get it to work. It seems to be a issue with the ad hoc network. I have tried several wireless heather apps including barnacle and others. Nothing works. May have to take zoom back if I cannot tether.
I tethered my XOOM to my EVO running CM7 RC4 just fine and dandy. No problems here, move along.
Im not using the Evo but the Samsung Epic.....WAY better phone, screen is 312x better, no HDMI out but the qwerty more than makes up for it.
The biggest downside I am finding is that using the FREE wifi apps, rather than the paid ones, i find it difficult to connect to my Sprint data network on the Epic with my Xoom. I am able to connect with my Epic to the Xooms network, but it only has 1gb and it costs money to go over. I have unlimited on the Epic, but I can only tether with Mac and Windows, and some odd distros of Linux that use older wifi network managers that were compatible with ad hoc networks......No luck getting the Xoom to connect the Ad Hoc only wifi hotspot that I am able to get using free third party apps.
Using the paid app works fine, but not with the app called Wifi-Tether, or Wireless Tether.

Are you using a paid tethering app, the official included tethering app, or a third party free app that requires rooting? Are you specifically using "Wireless Tether"?
If not, then its not really relevant to the OP.

Wireless Tether for Root Users

I am running SRF 1.2 which comes with WiFi tether which I have had VERY little luck with. Every time I try running it, the phone reboots. I remember that there was a thread or a post within a thread that explained how to avoid this but after playing with it for an entire night I was never able to get it to work with my 4G.
Last night I went surfing for apps and found the app in the thread title, the developer name is Mueller, Lemons, Buxton and it works like a charm. Within seconds of installing my computer had recognized the WiFi Hotspot and connected with DL speeds of 3-5 Mbps.
I just wanted to put this out there for SRF 1.2 users who may be experiencing similar problems who might want to use wireless tethering.
What version of the Wireless Tether app are you running? Is the icon green or yellow?
I'm running the Wireless Tether 3.0-pre14 with no problems. There is a trick for initial configuration and when you turn it on though:
Initial Config:
Device Profile = Epic 4G
Setup Method = Auto
Wifi-Encryption = Checked
Passphrase = (some passphrase)
SSID = (some SSID)
Access-Control = Enabled
To Turn Wireless Tether On:
Turn OFF 4G and WIFI. If either of these are on when wireless tether is turned on you will have problems.
Wait for both the "Hotspot" and "Wifi Tether" notifications.
Turn back ON 4G (if you want).
The trick is to go in settings and select the Epic. Then, before you start tethering, turn off 4g, then activate tether. Once it gets up and running, turn back on 4g and you will be good...EDIT...you beat me. The yellow 3 pre 14 is incredible

There is a new beta out that works really well and has Infrastructure (AP) mode. If you haven't looked go out to code.google.com and check it out. It works perfectly for my Epic. Just make sure you select Epic 4g in the device profile and Samsung SoftAP in the Setup-Method section.
I did a lot of these things, not remembering in particular what it was because it's been a few weeks.
I guess the point of the post was more just to let people know about another wireless tethering app that is free and works without having to adjust any settings, turn 4g on/off, face the western horizon between the hours of 3:00-6:00 pm, stand on your head while drinking water, turn the phone counter clockwise in your hand while you turn clockwise, etc...
Install, open, tether, done.
Wireless Tether by these apparently European devs. It works.
(I should write advertisements.)

i had that but now i downloaded 3.1 beta 1 but i havent tried it... has anyone tried both and which is better? i see 3 pre 14 is no longer on the website
I am using the newest 3.1 beta now with some success.
I experienced an issue on SRF 1.2 where my devices could get IP but could not access the internet.
The wifi tether would start and stop just fine, 4g or not.
I then flashed EF02plus and it works fine.
However, with EF02plus I have a different issue, which has existed with all versions of wifi tether 3.0, where 'sometimes' when you turn off 4G, the phone will reboot.
So, there is some combination of events that can lead to something going funny, and then turning off tether or 4g will reboot the phone. This doesn't happen often.
So far, 3.1 beta is a winner for me.

Is there an app that will run wireless tether in infrastructure mode when on gingerbread ef02? The evo(running latest rooted ota of gingerbread) has a hacked sprint hotspot that works perfectly. Is it because of not having source? I don't think they have gingerbread source for the evo yet either.

WIFI Tether Fix for CM9 and CM10 on NS4G

Does someone have the current WIFI tether zip file for CM9 and CM10 on the Nexus S 4G?
Why would you need that when both of them support WiFi tethering natively ? Just go to settings under " more" it right there along with NFC & 4g options you will see tethering & portable hotspot

I have not had luck with any tethering app OR native tethering on any JB ROM.
Also, I've never used a ROM (GB, ICS, or JB) that keeps 4G when using native tethering. Only 3G (which is slower than dial-up for me)
I'd like to have a fix for this as well as I use my phone for my home internet.
I keep a backup of stock rooted ICS to switch to from JB when I get home. What a hassle...
I've seen plenty of people posting that are in my same situation.
Here is the link to the app's download page: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I have the exact same problem. I couldn't get 4G tethering to work on Gingerbread, it works great on ICS and now I'm back to not having it on JB.

I know when I use Cyanogenmod 9 and 10 and turn on the wifi tether app, it showed up as a error but when I used AOKP, it worked flawlessly.
I was just looking for the same thing earlier today! I actually believed that it wasn't possible to have a 4G wifi tether hotspot until a few days ago, because every time I'd tried it (ICS & JB), I'd be knocked down to 3G lol same thing happens with usb tethering too.
on the bright side, 4G tethering works for me on PDANet and through native bluetooth tethering (which I used to use with my macbook pro) and android wifi tether (after a tweak in the settings)
now that the free version of PDANet sucks and I sold my MBP and am back to a bluetooth-less PC, a fix or something would be great

I even tell CyanogenMod on their Facebook page that it does not work and yet they do not respond.
I have the same issue with any jb rom. Are you guys on sprint as well? I saw another post where the guy said this happens with sprint users and to use foxfi, pdanet, or easytether to get 4g tethering. This worked for me with ics roms but not jb. Whenever I try to tether with a jb rom, I lose my data connection completely.

I too was having a wifi tethering issue, although mine was worse, I was losing all data connection when I attempted to activate the hotspot, however, when I switched over to this AOSP ROM (http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...aosp-jellybean-v2-2-jro03l-8-13-12-a.html#anb) over on AndroidCentral, my wifi tether began working. It initially kicks me off 4g, but in certain parts of my home (the restroom to be specific), I can get it to kick over to tethering on 4g, but I just need to be patient. There is also a tethering fix zip somewhere in that thread, but I don't know if it'd work on either CM9 or 10.
I had this same problem on CM9 (WIFI or USB tethering didn't work). I figured out that it happened when I would flash the Trinity Kernel. If I used the kernel that came with the ROM it worked fine. Unfortunately I can't speak for the 4g because I don't live in a 4g area. Now that I've flashed CM10 I've used Air Kernel and I haven't lost my native tethering capapbility.
