Recover mode gone after upgrade via Kies - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi all,
After my last update via KIES (a couple months ago) to Gingerbread on my SGS I am no longer able to enter recovery mode.
I can however, still access download mode.
I'm getting excited with all of the ICS news and I'm wondering if this will limit me in what I can/should do regarding installing custom roms/kernels.
Any thoughts on the subject (or a way to fix the issue) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I don't see an issue - standard recovery should work, no doubt, but you can enter download mode -> flash custom kernel with CWM -> install custom ROM from zip in CWM. Or skip the kernel flash and flash the ROM with Odin if the ROM supports it.
Have you tried entering recovery mode with adb ? Maybe it's just the keys that are not working at the time.

I haven't tried anything to restore the functionality at this point.
You've given me some good starting points to investigate this weekend.
Thanks for the input!

I don't know where you are from but for the I9000M, after the UGKG3 upgrade (gingerbread), recovery menu changed. It can now be access by pressing the middle part of the volume button and the power button.
I hope this helps.

Wow.
That totally worked. I guess it switched from Volume up with the Gingerbread upgrade!
Thanks!

Bricked and won't boot following attempted Samsung update (16GB Wifi Retail)

A message popped up from Samsung to install an update (I had been pressing cancel for the past week on this update). It says click OK to reboot and apply update (something along those lines) so I do. Now I am stuck with a tablet that won't boot. If I hold the power button it says "Samsung Galaxy 10.1" after about 12 seconds, but then it goes away and back to darkness. Nothing else. Holding power and volume up does nothing.
Someone know what is going on and have any idea how to resolve?
The best way is to restore any backup you have from cwm recovery. Else grab a stock firmware and flash it with ODIN or if zip than CWM recovery. For luck, try clearing cache and data in recovery, first!Perhaps it may work saving you all fuss of flashing a firmware.
I cannot even boot that far too get into recovery. And I just noticed that although I can't boot, the backlight is on (on a solid black screen).... wtf
You can't hold volume down and power button to enter recovery?
Nope. I plugged into my computer and for some reason with the USB connectd it let me enter recovery. Flashed a backup and rebooted, but now I have no wifi... im confused.
it occured once to me when i tried to overclock, it never worked except when installing a new rom... Try to root the device and then install a new rom
OK, was a helluva night messing with ROM and kernel installs... I have yet to go back to completely stock (that's next up tonight, unfortunately), but I installed Starburst ROM and the Wifi still didn't work so I then installed pershoot's kernel and now when I boot the screen is extremely distorted kind of like this: http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTsKa5IoQxnesGdUjykWDDggoQZ38yZ2VXSgPAQ09NOCnETzl9-
As a side note, when I say the wifi is not working, it still shows all networks and allows me to connect just like normal. However when connected no apps can access the network...
Can someone point me to a thread on how to revert EVERYTHING back to stock so I can start fresh? TIA!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171089
Should have all the files you need. From where you are now I would flash the stock OTA 3.1 or TW then flash the stock recovery and do a factory reset from that recovery. That should get rid of the garbled screen.
Thanks buddy. On my way to grab the files now
I heard the update was pulled as it sometimes rewrites the bootloader improperly. You might need to send it in, unfortunately.

No fastboot, recovery, or DL mode, rom works, please help!

TL;DR The title
Hey XDA,
So about a month or two ago, I decided to check out xdabbeb's VS982.5 rom because i felt like a bit of fresh air after all the lollipop roms was in order. So I grabbed his bumped bootstack+recovery, and flashed over to the rom.
What I didn't anticipate(and what I really shoule have) was the issues I would have getting back over to a lollipop rom because of the compatibility problems between loki'd and bumped roms and recoveries.
This is where my memory gets fuzzy because this was so long ago, and I apologize if that causes issues with fixing my problem. I do remember trying several different recoveries and bootstacks and none of them would flash because of the bumped recovery. Eventually I found a way to get back to my backup (The January 11th build of BlissPop). However, I still could not flash roms because of the bumped recovery I could not get off of. I tried several different recoveries, and several different methods of flashing them.
Eventually I downloaded flashify off the play store and downloaded the a recovery from there and flashed it from there, which to my recollection broke both my download mode and my recovery. The rom still works, but I can't access recovery or download mode to flash any new roms or do anything besides what is in the rom.
I would appreciate any suggestions anybody has for me, and am willing to totally revert to stock to fix this.
Much thanks!
EDIT: I was using/flashing TWRP builds for all of this in case it was unclear
check if you can get download mode using the mae way (vol up + power) but with usb cable pluged in, plug the usb cabe, presse the combo (up+pwr) and keep pressing until it reboots into downloadmode *always with usb plugged.
If you genuinely can't access recovery or download mode, you can enable usb debugging, adb shell, then dd write aboot, boot and laf to ensure the restoration of download mode. Might want to also write twrp recovery at that time so you have a bailout plan.

good to be usefull, we are here to help each other. thanks buton make that be more cool.
In my case I couldn't get into download mode.
This happened after flashing rpm, tz, boot and recovery partitions.
The screen doesn't show any logo and seems to be rebooting in a loop.
What can I do ?
Have you tried pressing volume down+ power an as soon as LG logo appears let both buttons off and press volumw down+volume up
Sometimes it works for goung into recovert
If asks for hard reset press YES YES YES and here you go
Hope it helps
Sadly my phone is not showing the logo, or anything on screen.
I can see that the screen is On because it has a weak glow, but it loops as if it was failing to boot the device.
When plugged to a macbook, I get this msg in dmesg:
hidd[65]: MultitouchHID: device bootloaded
kernel[0]: USBMSC Identifier (non-unique): 1234567890ABCDEF 0x5c6 0x9006 0x0, 2
kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::message - kIOUSBMessagePortHasBeenReset.
kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::checkStatus - received Status Packet, Payload 2: device was reinitialized
That repeats with the loop I mentioned previously.
This started happening after I I used 'fastboot' to flash partitions. I have tried many combinations to reset it, but none work, the screen never shows logos or error msgs...... that is really really disappointing about the device....
Has anybody found a fix for this? I'm in the same boat now, flashed CM12, went to update my outdated TWRP recovery and now its just a blank screen when I boot into recov, the ROM works fine. I'm afraid to do the aboot method because it seems like a lot of people are bricking.
At least I'm lucky I'm on a somewhat stable ROM at the moment.

[Q] Restore to stock without download mode

I installed CrDroid for my Verizon LG G2. It took me a while to get things working, but they eventually got sorted out.
Unfortunately, in the process, I lost the ability to enter Download Mode. I haven't been able to solve this problem and can't find any solutions. That said, I can boot into my phone just fine, and can also enter recovery (TWRP).
My goal is just to restore my phone to stock so that I can download the latest firmware OTA. Is it possible to do this without access to Download Mode via TWRP or some other means? All the guides I have found for restoring the phone to stock involve the use of Download Mode, but as that isn't available to me, I'm looking for alternatives.

I assume you've tried holding Volume Up + Plugging your phone into the PC via USB? I'm only asking because you don't mention it at all.
How did you try to get into download mode? Via hard keys or reboot menu?

Yes, I should have mentioned that I used the normal "hard keys" to enter download mode. My initial problem was that entering it would immediately show a series of commands and just hang there forever. I did some searches and thought that maybe I would need to flash the "Download mode restore for 26A BL" found on this XDABBEB's thread, particularly because I had used XDABBEB to get to 26A:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715408
After I flashed the download mode restore zip, the download mode results changed slightly. I would now stay on the initial download mode image (the one with the dots), but it would never progress further. Different result, but still unusable for me. I have no idea how to solve this problem.
Is Download Mode the only way to restore to stock? I'm hoping not...

Note 4 N9108V no download mode?

when trying put the phone in download mode by pressing Volume down, Home and Power buttons phone goes into factory mode and the choices in there are:

Version
Reboot
When i do Volume up and power i get to a screen with an android on his back his chest open and a red triangle with an exclamation mark in it. i know its android recovery but it cannot flash roms.
all i want to do is put a recovery on this phone. Ive already rooted it with kingroot so its rooted just need a recovery and a new rom for the one that came on this phone is horrible!!!
Ive tried downloading twrp supersu etc from play store installed them and when they try to install recovery or su they say they cannot.
also have installed all the different usb drivers ive found for samsung and odin
btw my pc is a decade old windows xp dinosaur
Thanks for any assistance in getting to put a recovery on.
wow did not think this would stump the xda community. anyone can tell me of another way to get a recovery on it would be great
Getting recovery on my N9108v wasn't a problem. I didn't see those options you mentioned. I must say I hate my phone but I have no problem getting to download mode. I guess at least the latest firmware is an improvement... but I had to reinstall everything because of a Google issue. Sigh.
Ok, here's what I do - I connect my phone to the computer using samsung usb connector - I press home key and press down volume, while powering up. A screen with chinese and a yellow triangle appear. I then press volume up and it goes into downloading mode and connects to Odin. That simple ... Maybe your phone is not a N9108v or is a copy? Maybe it's your kings thing software and choice of TWRP
I didn't use Kings whatever - I used the chainfire thingy and a chinese derived and downloaded CWM. Never bothered with TWRP for this phone as I doubt anyone has cared enough to make a version work on it. The N9108v is a dud in terms of anyone actually developing anything on it. I HATE THIS PHONE. I am eagerly awaiting the Xiaomi 5 or some other phone- almost went the ONeplus 2 - that can set me free and back to messing around and having fun with brilliant developer ROMS. Oh and did I mention I hate this phone! I know now that I cannot suffer another Samsung or any other phone that is made for the Chinese community that has no developer community.
Anyway, After Chainfire rooting - From Odin you can flash the recovery of choice, right? I think you only have CWM as a choice.
Then it is home button and up volume at the same time to get into your new recovery... Not easy to do first up, but once you do it a few times, it becomes stupidly easy.

SM-G360T1

Hello, I keep flashing TWRP with Odin but it resets when it's done and recovery does not change. I have tried several different versions of Odin and TWRP from their website and from here. Any idea what to do?
Which TWRP are you flashing? I recommend using version 3.0.1-0 from here, as version 3.0.2-0 has been known to have some problems in the past.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=66266209
Maybe try making sure Allow OEM unlock is switched on in Settings-->Developer Options before you flash it too. Obviously make sure your device is being recognized properly by ODIN as well. You should see a little blue box light up in the top left of the ODIN window when you connect the device. Make sure you're flashing it in the AP slot and no other. Also, make sure you have the current Samsung drivers installed for the SM-G360T1 from here:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/galaxy-core-prime-metro-pcs
Hope this helps! Have a good day.
I've honestly tried just about every version here and on the website. Started with 2.8.7 as a ROM I was interested in recommended it, however I am willing to use any that will work at this point I really only wanted my device rooted for one simple task.
My drivers appear up to date -
USB debugging and Boot unlock are both enabled -
Odin shows PASS and reboots my phone on flash -
Everything seems like it's working right, but it's not replacing my recovery. When I reboot it just takes me back to the warning/download screen. Is it possible I might need to downgrade to the original Lollipop that came with this phone first?
Edit -> I tried TrapKernel as well, that disabled my wifi entirely (on/off button would not stay in on position)
Edit -> Tried downgrading to the original Lollipop that came with my phone and it reboots itself as soon as it gets in to Android. Gonna try flashing it again before returning to current Android. :/

Pull out the battery after the phone comes up on the boot logo when the flash is complete. After that put it back in and press VOL UP + HOME + POWER and it should take you to the TWRP recovery. You do this because the phone will recognize that is not a original recovery, so it replaces with the original one. Make sure to put a custom rom with root in it so it doesn’t replace the recovery again.
