[Q] Kindle won't pickup adhoc wireless my phone will?? - Kindle Fire General

So I bought a cheap USB wireless adapter for my PC - D-Link DWA-125.
I set up an ad-hoc wireless connect, my SGS phone sees it but the Kindle won't.
Any ideas?
PS I'm in Australia if that makes any difference.

default android cannot connect to Ad-hoc.
if you want doing this, your fire must be rooted then you copy one file to your fire.
you can search in this forum for more infomation, I can remember where the file is.

If you are running Windows 7 use Connectify it creates a wireless hot spot and the lite version is free. connectify.me

It was advertised that the fire wouldn't support ad-hoc networks from the announcement. Conectify on win7 works pretty well though.

Well, I found a wpa_supplicant file on the forums here and copied to system/bin, but it doesn't work. Anyone have a working wpa_supplicant, or know what files I need to edit? This sounds like the most elegant solution, if not I'll try connectify as suggested.

After fsuking around for hours, still not working, and am too tired to do more.
I tried method from http://www.chinadigitalcomm.com/android-a81/a81e-connect-to-ad-hoc-wifi-t1413.html namely
Turn off wireless and then you need to edit two files, either text editor or ADB
adb pull /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini tiwlan.ini
adb push tiwlan.ini /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf wpa_supplicant.conf
adb push wpa_supplicant.conf /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
for tiwlan.ini - look for the WiFiAdhoc line and change, add the other two lines after it
--------------
WiFiAdhoc = 1
dot11DesiredSSID = InsertyourSSIDhere
dot11DesiredBSSType = 0
for wpa_supplicant.conf - add the ap_scan=2 line and your adhoc network
-----------------------
ctrl_interface=DIR=/data/system/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wifi
update_config=1
ap_scan=2
network={
ssid="InsertyourSSIDhere"
key_mgmt=NONE
mode=1
wep_key0=1234567890
priority=20
}
- Reboot and turn on wireless - can take a while to connect
- this works on the Android 2.1 firmware, have not yet fully tested on 2.2.
- I think the priority line is important, make it bigger than other networks in wpa_supplicant.conf so it tries to connect to AdHoc first.
- When you add new networks through the Android settings menu, the ap_scan=2 line disappears so you have to re-add it

Any luck? I've been playing with my HTC HERO all day trying different roms etc.

There's no developer published wpa_supplicant replacement for Kindle Fire's system/bin/wpa_supplicant till now.
So I find ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk is so well to switch Kindle Fire to support Kindle Fire

A lot of ways to setuo WiFi hotspot with laptop, but Bzeek is the most useful one and it supports both Win XP and Vista.
I met a problem with Bzeek as well as lots of guys met that after restart the Windows, Bzeek is alway Off instead of On, even you can't turn it On.
So I check google and found that
Personal Hotspot Status
Your Personal Hotspot is Off
Some of the Bzeek settings are not yet in effect. Please restart your computer for the Bzeek settings to take effect. If the problem persists, please contact Bzeek for support.

If it is not solved after boot you can run services.msc and make sure the bzeek service is running.

It's a BUG for Bzeek due to their lack of maintance?
So manually if you like, you should go to

Get Bzeek Service and make it START
For easy use I build .bat file to TURN ON or TURN OFF Bzeek Free WiFi service effeciently. You can download them here

Install ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk
Before running it you'd better ROOT your Kindle Fire for higher user ability.
Run ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher
You should see Switch to Infrastructure mode / Switch to Ad-hoc mode button.
Click Switch to Infrastructure mode and it turns to Switch to Ad-hoc mode then you can click Settings button to set SSID and WEP password if possible.
I put into Bzeek Free WiFi as SSID as I'm using Bzeek and WEP is not selected for Bzeek. If you use other name and with WEP, just do your way.
Now the button display Switch to Ad-hoc mode, just click it and turn it to
Ad-hoc Mode, click Enable WiFi button and it will connect to Bzeek Free WiFi rapidly
Then it will ask you put in your Bzeek username and password, finally you can share the internet with WiFi Ad-Hoc from your laptop happily!
I post this method to a Chinese forum and you can check screenshot images and download links there better.

Anyone found a way to switch to Ad-hoc mode WITHOUT have to root the Kindle Fire?
Surely there must be a way, but how?

Any luck?

Use Wireless Tether for Roofed users. Chose LG Optimus S as the device profile, and change the LAN to 192.168.1.0/24. This will enable a full wifi network on your phone instead of adhoc.

That's strange...looks like someone went and edited my post to reflect the changes that occurred between the time I made the post and the time the edit happened.
I wonder who edited that for me? Also, what is a google?

I concur with borborpa. I would think the problem is that the kindle fire will only connect to a normal network as opposed to ad-hoc, which is how most phones tether their connection. The only way then to tether your kindle fire to your phone would be to get a phone whose wireless chipset supports emulating a real router.

[Q] How do you perform WiFi Tethering on Wildfire?

Hi!
First, I'm a total newbie regarding the Wildfire and Android. But since there are more people like me and there is no straight-forward answer in this forum, I thought I could ask the question.
How can I make my Wildfire emit a WiFi signal so that I can access the internet on my MacBook and my iPod Touch?
I have already rooted my Wildfire, following the steps explained in this link: h t t p :/ / rootmydroid. co. uk/guides/general/howto-root-your-htc-desire-wildfire-evo-incredible-with-unrevoked/ using unrEVOked.
I guess my Wildfire is now rooted, because I have the Superuser app.
Then I started to download some apps with which tethering supposedly should be possible, but they're not working:
-Android WiFi Tether: ht tp://code .google .com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=Aria
I can emit a WiFi signal, which is picked up by my iPod and my MacBook (running in OSX as well as in Windows XP). But when I try to access the internet it cannot get a network address (MacBook) and on the iPod you see that there is a connection, but internet does not work.
-Barnacle Wifi Tether (see the market)
When I try to establish a WiFi signal, I get the following errors:
Failed to set AP_SCAN
[1] Terminated ./dhcp
[2] Terminated ./nat
Stopped unexpectedly
I got USB tethering working using EasyTether. Install this on your computer ht tp://www .mobile-stream. com/easytether/drivers .html (Windows only) and download the app on your phone from the market ht tp ://www .mobile-stream. com/easytether/android. html.
But since I would like to have WiFi access to the internet and it's just for Windows, this is not an option.
I've heard about PDANet, but I cannot find it in the Market..
So... can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? Why do Barnacle and WiFi Tether not work? And what can I do to make it work?
Thanks in advance!
PS The links don't work, remove the spaces. I'm a newbie so link posting is prohibited.
Am I the only one with this problem?
get pdanet from appbrain, just install it and also install fast web installer on phone, and go on the appbrain website and it will dl straight to your phone when your mobile net is on. you have to be signed into your gmail account.

Thanks for the input.
PDA Net is not what I want, because I want to get internet on my iPod Touch..
And, @Bluedragon, I'm a noob So what do you mean with Wildpuzzle and where do I get it?
But what I don't understand is, WHY does that Android tethering app not work? I just seems like my MacBook does not get a valid IP address to access the internet. The WiFi network itself is visible..
There must be a solution without installing another rom.
I found after a couple of hours of trying a few months ago the the following version of wifi tether works with the wildfire. 2.0.5-pre8. You also need to also need to put the file fw_bcm4329.bin into a folder you need to create called android.tether . I would not try to change the ssid name or passphrase either as both seem to corrupt the program. Hope this helps I use it to connect my IPad to my wildfire and it works great. All the files you need you can find via google.
Thank you very much! That works!
The app seems to use a lot of power, though. But that's probably normal?
I tuned down the transmitting power. See if that works.
And I can't even change the SSID. Every character I try seems to be "corrupt".
I have a stock HTC WIldfire ROM 2.1 rooted. Installed Wifi Tether pre9 release using a custom SSID and WEP key no problem.
I've used easy tether from the market place. Works great.
Easy tether won't work with an iPod though.
Seems there is not much information on wifi tethering on the wildfire.
Installing a custom rom looks to be difficult but maybe that's just me
It's not - just copy the file, root , boot into recovery , DO A NANDROID BACKUP!!!!! and install the rom. If you hate the rom you can restore from the backup

How To Enable AD-Hoc Support

to get AD-Hoc working you first need root and either root explorer (paid app but worth the money) or es file explorer (free but you have to enable root privaleges inside the app. its under the settings menu)
1. navigate to system/bin and copy wpa_supplicant
2. past this to your sd card as a backup
3. rename wpa_supplicant to wpa_supplicant.old
4. extract the file from the download and past it into the system/bin folder. (should be wpa_supplicant)
4. Long press on the file once copied
6. select Permissions and set to User: RWE, Group & Others:RE only
again a big big thank you to the original poster/fixer the original thread is

sorry I'm a little down with the lingo, would this allow me to tether to my droid x using wireless tether?
Ad hoc solution did not work for me...
Followed everything to the letter - got WiFi error - would not connect or even turn on WiFi...
I renamed the old file - got rid of .old and all was back to normal...
I did notice the the Group the file belonged to was NOT the same as the old file. Going to look into that...

[SOLVED]make your iconia as a hotspot when no wifi signal around for file sharing

as title,
is there any way to do this ?
i want my iconia to become a wifi hotspot just to do file sharing via wifi to my windows .. i know its not possible to share connection as this device dont have 3g network ...
PROBLEM SOLVED
this is my way :
1. download 'power control plus' from market
2. put the widget on the homescreen or notification bar as u wish, but choose wifi tethering as one of the component
3. now u can on the portable hotspot using it.. and u can configure by touching the tethering symbol in the notification bar
4. if you want to exchange file with windows, just download 'andftp' from market, your android will be the ftp client and the device connected to the iconia hotspot will be the server (remember to the file sharing on the device)
when do you need this actually ?
1. when u want to transfer file from pc when there is no wifi around and no usb cable
2. when u want something on your friends ipad / iphone (dont know about this actually, as apple are very strict about file sharing, but sure u can use this with jailbroken devices)
3. with another device which can be an ftp server.. symbian may be ?
nb : you have to know the right address for adding in ftp client, in mac i can see that on system preferences -> sharing -> file sharing
may be someone can tell how to do this in windows 7 ?
thx...

Guide to get adhoc working on touchpad(tested and proven to work on my NRG sense3.5)

Hello guys! I have been having troubles getting my touchpad loaded with leoisright rom(I am using vB2.1[CM7 XRON-ified][Super Tweaked][Updated 12/17/2011]) to connect to my HTC HD2([Dec 14] [MULTILANG] Energy™ -.¸¸.·´¯ Sense 3.5 SensationXL! [Tweaks!] [RCMix ker]). Because currently native wifi hotspot is not working on any ported sense 3.5 rom on HD2, only Ad Hoc via Barnacle app can make data sharing work. However I know that touchpad cannot connect properly to a Ad Hoc network. But I manage to get it work by downloading ZT-180 Adhoc switching from market. Below are the steps I took:
*Make a CWM backup of your touchpad first in case something went wrong*
*I told you to make a backup already so do not blame me if anything happens*
1. Download ZT-180 Adhoc switcher onto touchpad.
2. Rename SSID(Network Name) on Barnacle app on HD2 to "AndroidTether"
3. *skip this step if you do not wish to set wireless encryption on Barnacle app on HD2.* Set the encryption key to whatever you want on Barnacle app.
4. Start Barnacle app on HD2.
5. Enable wifi on touchpad.
6. Open ZT-180 adhoc switcher on touchpad.
7. go to ZT-180 adhoc switcher settings.
8. Enter the encryption key in the "set WEP Key"
9. Tap back and Tap on try to switch to "Ad-hoc mode, just to try..."
10. wait awhile as it is trying to connect to "AndroidTether".
11. Done.
*You can edit to whatever network name you want at step 2. Just make sure you enter the same network name and passwork in the settings or ZT-180 adhoc switcher*
*This may also work on other devices or rom so just try it out and report if it is working*
*This is not my work and I take no credits. I am just sharing with everyone how I manage to get it work.*
If you are unble to connect back to your usual network, simply forget the network and add it again.
I was able to get it to work easily with Open Garden which is free in the market, this on my thunderbolt... but I am Olympic running a sense 2.1 Roman, not sure if that makes a difference, but I did try and couldn't get barrnicle or wifi tether to work no matter what I did, open garden simply works...

I don't think that was what he was replying to. It obviously allows you to specifically grant access to the devices that should be getting it and not allow access to anyone that can see the SSID. Towards the bottom of the first post, it was asked if anyone knew how to create a password, to please post it. I'm pretty sure that is all he was responding to.
Prior to the Moto X, I had a Gnex, so I haven't used this app in quite some time, but when I did use it, the encryption was WEP and did funny things. Access control is just fine for me, and I'm not sure why anyone would care THAT much about SSID.
Its the SSID and the password that can't be changed. I could see why someone would want to have a password on their network. Mac address control is not very secure at all.

I followed the instructions but when I try to connect my ipad to my phone it tells me "unable to join the network". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Played around with settings and this is what I did:
Device profile: Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)
Set up Method: Auto
Wifi driver reload AND wifi driver reload 2: checked
Enable access control: check
Keep alive connection: check
Make sure MSS clamping and Routing fix are both checked. Now it runs buttery smooth and speeds are great!
This is one of the only reasons I root, I don't do roms just strictly tethering. Hope this helps someone that was in my situation as well.

It's secure enough for this purpose. Yes, they can be spoofed, and yes MAC's can be sniffed out from simple packet watching, however, an attacker would need knowledge of this to even try it, as well as the hotspot would need to be up long enough to care.
I would definitely *prefer* the ability to change SSID and password, but I'm not losing sleep over it.
