Xperia Play with HDMI port?

Anyone else see this on Engadget?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/02/does-this-xperia-play-have-hdmi-output/
Would be pretty upset if they are going to be releasing an Xperia Play with updated hardware already as I just got mine last week
ive been wondering about this. there is a HDMI test in the service menu, wonder if thats related
My guess is they dropped it at the last moment before final production.
They edited the post and says it's a dev unit for the E3...
Have tv out through the jack socket on my N900 that's a nice feature I would've liked to see on the xplay
It would've been awesome playing Rainbow6 online on the tell
Regards Dousan...
well next time plz read it properly "Sony might release a micro-USB to HDMI adapter"
there is no change in the hardware i suppose only a new type of wire will come out

The HDMI is plugged into the bottom left of the device, where there is no port. But it's been confirmed this was just a dev unit, so no worries.

im afraid u are right :/
*ON MY FACE* i shudve got the sgs 2 in the 1st place
sad that this phone doesnt have resale value i got it for around 600 euros and now its on ebay for around 400 or so >_<
i have to bear with this phone for another year or so
the fact that it is confirmed to be a dev unit and not a new model of play made me happy cause it wouldn't be fair to us who have already bought it. However I got this device for gaming and the lack of Hdmi port pisses me off especially when I see a port like that in a dev unit of Play and also on Xperia arc...
offtopic: I saw order and chaos online to be played on an iphone and I don't understand why we have to wait so long for games like these to be ported on Play.
Yeah it's a weird choise from SE to not include tv out/hdmi in a device like this
Regards Dousan...
hmm to my thinking i think that sony ericsson deliberately removed HD video recording zoom a better screen and hdmi output because the arc was meant to be their flagship device and was their main focus to earn cash...if all there were all these features were in the play the arc sales would've dropped by a million
i think that once se achieves their target for selling the arc the might include these features in future updates

We have to wait until they are profitable enough for the companies to make enough profit to finance the cheap Android port.
When I was a heavy console gamer, we in Spain got disilussioned SO. MANY. TIMES. With the companies not releasing their good stuff in our consoles. This is pretty much the same... though in fact we have to wait not for companies to release things on Android, but for Gameloft to copy another high-selling game.

Would you be interested in a cheaper version?

http://www.indiegogo.com/atlaz
Just a quick on. Would you devs and general hackers be interested in cheaper alternitive?
Same specs just won't look as nice. and probably only do HDMI out instead of speaker outputs. Also made in china to drive down the cost.
Im in the process of getting a prototype worked up.
Anybody interested?
Here is a question for you.
Would you be happy to buy it at cost price or a slightly inflated price where I could then send free devices to developers?
I do not wish nor want to make money on this product.
sounds good

yeah big time but its gotta really hit the price point of a google TV to be logical...
`
what price point are you aiming for?
Sub-$100, I would be interested.
Hoping for sub $200 but I will try and drive the price down as low as I can. It will have the same CPU/GPU as the Nexus Q and if possible same WiFi Bluetooth and NFC chip to avoid and driver issues when you great developers do a straight up port.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
yeah it would need to run the same components. i don't see devs going out and buying the model that is basically a knock off and supporting it (no offence, i would love your knock off version). I would be curious as to if removing the amp would mess that kinda stuff up? i suggest you talk with devs first and see. I feel as if the amp is a lackluster, and extra cost feature not really needed as buying a external sound system is cheap these days.
all in all i love your idea and would like more updates on where your at!
thanks!
The product was never designed to be a knock off of the Nexus Q. It just so happens that they have the same basic hardware. This device was intended to be a Android Media Player that was running crap hardware. I watched I/O and seen the beautiful device and after looking at it realised its the same CPU/GPU and the idea sprung to mind. I don't want to market it as a knock off Nexus Q but a Android Media player with hack-ability that can if you so wish, pretend to be a Nexus Q in terms of software.
sorry didnt mean to knock you like that saying "knock off" haha that has a bad sense that comes with it. let me rephrase. if you could produce a device that would run the exact same software, Dev ports as well, i would snatch that up in a heartbeat as i feel the development on the Q will be greater with google pumping out 6,000 of these devices to devs at I/O.
are you thinking of starting a kickstarter? if you plan to jump into anything like that please post the link so i can check it all out!
If you need someone to bounce ideas off of im open to comment and try to help. im an aspiring dual major in CGT and entrepreneurial class so if you wanted some models or business ideas im down to talk.
Quick update on the price point. I think it will be impossible to do this for sub $100. The processor in the device itself is costing $60 alone.

cant work on mass orders at lower cost? that seems high but i guess i could be wrong =P
I think two versions could have some success:
1. Basically same parts, exact clone except the design and maybe the lack of an amp and fancy leds. Basically you can run the same Rom without any bigger Modifications. At least 30% cheaper.
2. Heavily striped down version with another soc, no nfc, maybe even no bt. Just hdmi, mains and audio. Allwinner A10 comes into mind. Pricetag under ~$90.
The Tegra3 is rumored to cost $25 in the Nexus 7, if you can get descent quantity order i think the omap should be in that price range too.
Currently my order is only 1000 orders. Because I have to way to guarantee I can even move that amount! Currently working on a kickstarter style project page.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Definitely interested in an open alternative to the Q.
You should definitely try Kickstarter for this. You should be able to get a large order to drive down the price if its popular enough
I am not sure what market you are targeting with your planned android media player.
With a built in speaker amp, the Nexus Q differentiates itself from the pack. As such, it can compete in the Sonos type markets, and in markets like all of the "iPod Docks" that you see littered in cubicles everywhere. Considering Sonos charges $350+ and Bose charges $250+, the Q can be considered somewhat competitive, considering it's Made in America status.
By removing the amp, now you are turning it into a Google TV / Apple TV / Roku / WDTV Live / etc competitor. This is a very intense market, and if you can't get the made in china price under $100, I think it will be hard to compete. (And there are already small / cheap devices that plug into a TV: http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/18/3028202/mk802-android-usb-hdmi-stick )
As I said the CPU im looking at $60 before shipping. I plan to sell the the device at cost + shipping. Their is a kickstarter page coming (Not actually kickstarter as im not in the US)
The AMP is of no use to me as the device would go into my current setup.
Also being almost deaf I personally have no use for it

Future for Play?

Hi guys.
I'm currently a Galaxy i9000 owner with slimbean installed. I just took advantage of the Gameloft sale but I cannot game on a touchscreen, it just doesnt work for me. I was looking at buying a play but they are really hard to get now. Tesco want £429.99!!! Phones4u only want £150 which seems OK to me but I've heard a lot about it being out of date now so is it still worth buying one? How is the compatibility with 2.3 and new apps/games? Will JB ever be ported?
Any help is most appreciated guys. Thanks.

Carphonewarehouse are doing it for £129.99 on an upgrade I think. The compatibility is great even on android 2.3.4. There is nothing to worry about, the only downside of the phone is that it doesn't have a great internal memory, cannot connect to TV via mini-HDMI and the flex cable tends to break over time. My Play is currently at Sony for this very reason. Im hoping my warranty is still valid.
Had mine for 2 weeks after toying with getting one for donkeys.
I bought one cheap with a broken digitiser off ebay. Replaced this part, sold my iphone 4 and couldn't be more pleased. I've not bought this to play latest games. For me it's the emulators that really appeal and to that end it works a treat.
This emulation rinses the battery though, but gingerbread hasn't proven to be a hindrance one jot.
Let's face it, the key usp of the play is the gamepad and it works a treat.

Exactly what I've done. Got mine 2nd hand for about £70. Emulation is where it's at - fpse is great seems to run most psx roms with gamepad support. Sure the graphics are old school - but the quality, gameplay and depth on many PS1 classics is far superior to most modern mobile phone games. Other emulators work well too - all of a sudden I've got a gaming device with a back catalogue of 1000s of games.
As a phone it's ok - but even when it was released it wasn't top of the range. As far as I can tell it has more or less the same storage, cpu and gpu as nearly every other 2011 xperia device (except the arc s). It's like Sony didn't foresee games becoming more processor demanding in the coming year or two.
That said, it had a massive price tag at release, if they'd gave it the best hardware, that price would have been even higher.

Two New Android Gaming Devices, Xperia Play alternatives

First, the iPega: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/ipega-android-gaming-tablet-launching-in-may-video-18-04-2013/
Then the IbenX: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/ibenx-gamepad-android-gaming-tablet-unveiled-15-04-2013/
I think the iPega would be better, with a very nice gamepad, and more portable. I think it would need a quad core processor to beat the IbenX and the upcoming Wikipad. Thoughts?
I like the ibenx better though id never buy either. The Ipega looks like it has a smaller screen and I don't like the awkward shape of it. But I wouldn't replace my play with either of those. Though I would if they made a phone like the party but with analog sticks like the vita instead of touch pads. It seems like these gaming tablets are popping up all over the place noire we just need to find the best one

It's too big, isn't it?
i dont think they are alternatives for xperia play in my opinion cause they lack the phone part,i m gonna be using play till it breaks up or if sony releases a new one :fingers-crossed:

I'm hoping sometime late next week, but we'll see. I'll try to post a video review when I get my hands on it and have some time to mess with it. Here's hoping it rules!
Wow Sony for such a lackluster phone I bought 2 years ago or so, I still wouldn't trade it for the latest and greatest out now
unfortinatlly , they arn't a phone ! just tablet !
if i want to carry a gaming handy console, i prefer ps vita or 3DS .
i' looking for gaming-phone device , like xperia play.
just " much i5 " remain . a gaming phone , but you know , that is chinese .... and ...
Great choice bro. :good: Do let me know how's the peformance and battery life when you get it. I'm really looking forward to your review. My only worries are whether they will release the codings or not haha as I'm quite fond with custom roms and kernels. It's very interesting to explore new possibilities after all.

Just wanted everyone to know that some videos were posted of the JXD s7800A (the weaker one), and it looks so freaking awesome. It seems to handle everything very well, and this is the weaker model. The device also goes portrait view no problem, which is totally sweet. Check this forum post http://boards.dingoonity.org/jxd-devices/jxd-s7800-quad-core-will-be-released!/ to see some vids of emulation, the unboxing, and some nice photos of the device. I bought my s7800B a few weeks ago, and apparently it's delayed, which sucks, but I'm willing to wait since this thing is going to rule so much. Enjoy! I'm stoked to get mine!

Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I will be taking a look at it.
The thing about the Xperia Play, is that it could switch from phone to PSP in a matter of seconds. These "Alternatives" are just android devices that were made for gaming, but do you really see yourself having a conversation with one of these things?
Sent from my R800i using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah. The killer feature in the XP for me is that, when you hide the gamepad it's a smartphone like any other.
I don't see myself with a gamepad or handheld console style device as smartphone.
Some company should make something similar to the XP. I can't understand why there's nothing similar with so many Android devices released around the world and even an increasing number of Android gaming devices.

Couldn't agree more. xplay has been my one and only phone/gaming device. I could never see myself playing games using a touch screen. It's downright stupid. With all these andoird gaming devices I just cant see why none of em has tried to make a phone/gaming hybrid like the xplay.

We are stuck in this limbo called XPERIA PLAY

I refuse to live in a world where the only way to enjoy gaming with an Android device in public is by owning and old ass Xperia Play.
There are 0 alternatives to the Xperia Play.
All these pads that you have to carry in your pocket and attach/deattach look goofy as f*ck and are annoying.
The new Snail W3D is HUGE and I don't want something that looks like a handheld console anyway. When im on a meeting with middle aged men at an office I can't pop out MUH GAMING CONSOLE.
Carrying an actual handheld console in 2015 along with your normal smartphone... LOL.
This is why, for me, the Xperia Play was perfect. You want to play: you slide the gamepad out and enjoy some great ms-dos/old school emulation gaming. When you are done, slide in and it looks like a regular phone. THATS the only option. I need that. I CANT enjoy modern games, I don't care about them, and I can't enjoy old games with touchscreen controls. How in the f*ck im supossed to strafe and shoot at the same time in Doom? Jesus christ, they ruined everything. If only stupid Sony wouldn't held the stupid patent, we could have had something similar to the Bladepad or the Razer Junglecat for the main Android phones, but meanwhile, unless you want to buy an iCrap, you are stuck with the Xperia Play which is a slow POS nowadays.
Im only asuming that's the reason, because I refuse to believe no one has thought about releasing a sliding gamepad EVER for any Android phone.
This is my rant after years of waiting for something.
Brother. I know your pain. You have said what I've been thinking for a REALLY long time. Respect.
Dukedoom - i think just like You. But there are no choise in the world. Really. Only Xperia Play up to today have a gamepad. A real gamepad and it's a real phone. I think that we never get another phone with gamepad simmilar to ours Xperia Play. It's really sad.
I bought a gamepad for my s4. It's easy to connect and to mount. But it's still another device with another battery and another thing to carry. Like Ngage long time ago - xperia play had small group of fans. But thoese fans are loyal as hell.
You guys definitely aren't alone on this one. I'm getting tired of the Play's lack of power. If I run the stock rom all the emulators run smoothly but I get shafted in the apps department. If I upgrade to 4.x then I can run modern apps but the emulators are sluggish. I'm also on a R800X so my rom options are limited as well. There is still a demand for a device like the Play but everybody is too stupid to make it. I can't find anything like it even if I look at Chinese imports and they practically invented handheld game consoles that use emulators!
I feel the pain however the play sold **** all so no one even wants to make no. 2 much w3d it's your best option at the moment. If we could get more interest in the devices to accumulate than maybe Sony would make another but for that to happen the vita must die lol. Sure would be cool if you could just slap a new cpu in and recode some software but that's not how it works. The play could run newer os but you need a really good developer to optimise. Much w3d is gigantic which sucks I'll be buying one right now they are on pre order though and I never pre order anything.

I agree with the sentiment here. I have been waiting for a proper sucessor (slidedepad) for a long time.
Unfortunately the Xperia Play was sold in a moment where mobile gaming was still in its infancy, and phones weren't the little powerhouses of today. If it was released today, we would have a very potent quadcore with at least 2gb ram, HDMI out (or at least a dock for that) and possibly remastered PSP games made for it, which would certainly drive more sales. That, and having actual analogs instead of touchpads (like the PSP Go) would really help make it sell like hotcakes, possibly paving the way for an Xplay 2 and more.

Well i upgraded my phone and just use a keychain controller. It's not as good as the xperia play, but that's a nice alternative.

And i ordered a cheaper clone for my gf, friends and brother (back then got it for 4€ each) :

Quick review : Well, that's a nice piece of hardware, but you lack L/R/Start/Select (well just use the virtual controller on screen for those and that's ok). The cross is not really precise, don't expect to play fighting game with that (Hadoken are tricky), but that's ok for most of games.
Edit : It seems there is a new challenger :

Last summer.... I picked up a R800x off of ebay for $25 with Free Shipping. I was really surprised how good of shape it was in.... I would say an 8 out of 10. I only use it for gaming because I have a note 3 as my daily driver. But I'm loving it for emulators... definitely worth the small amount I paid for it. Maybe you could pick one up cheap too on eBay if you keep your eyes peeled .

The white look is nice and there's definitely a lot more development for the R800i variant than the R800x. It looks like a nice phone. I only got a R800x because a friend of mine had one and I was teaming up with him to help him root it and unlock the bootloader (This is the only Sony phone I've ever bought and I was totally unfamiliar with Flashtool, ftf's, etc... ).
It would be good to have you back on here with an Xperia Play in hand .... when I was learning to root and Rom this phone, I found a lot of your older posts to be really helpful.

I am glad to hear that my posts have been helpful here. I am going to get a PLAY within a month or so, but I will snag one. The Nexus would stil be my main daily driver and I would be buying the PLAY as a gaming device only. But it would be nice to be back here on this thread with a PLAY in hand. Despite moving on to the N5 forum I still check this forum almost daily despite not having the phone anymore, simply because this forum felt like a small group of friends and I spent so much time on this forum thast I simply could not go without still seeing what was going on. Looking forward to getting another PLAY. I am glad that my past posts were helpful, look forward to being back on here soon. I will keep ya'll posted.
I wouldnt be able to get a Xperia Play at this point. I have a LG P970 which pretty much has the same hardware as the Xperia Play and I cant wait to upgrade it to a Samsung S5 Mini, the phone is bloated as **** and browsing of the internet is not smooth.

A few mods and the xperia play is super smooth
Sent from my LT28i using XDA Free mobile app
Agree with all the sentiments here. Despite the varied Android ecosystem, nobody including Sony wants to bite. The Xperia Play was ergonomically perfect, but no doubt it would have been the usual paranoia and cross product in fighting that killed it before it had a chance based on some really stupid decisions regarding the specs. Such a shame and depressing state of affairs how close we got to the perfect gamer phone.
i still use the play for emulators and legendary games like bruce lee, fifa 12, and star battalion.
you know what's close for me? i've been using the xperia ZL for a year now and 5.0 HD screen w/quad core on a 4.4 kitkat and 4glte with the OEM option to sync my ps3 controller.
i have all my xperia play games on this device and having to play it on a sony phone w/my ps3 controller without any lag is just as cool for me. i'm a sony fanboi and having the xperia lounge, playstation mobile, walkman player still reminds me of my play without the convenience of the controller slide out.
with the sync, i just turn on the ps3 controller and connects with my newer xperia. it's not completely the same but it feels close.
Guys , what do you think if we find someone how can make a modern Xperia play alternative at kickstarter.com ??
or we can email Sony or do something , so they can made an Xperia play 2 ...
