Gorilla Glass can still be scratched - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Mod edit - The Note does have Gorilla Glass - but it can still be scratched if you are not careful! I'm leaving this open for scratch discussion
Regardless of where you heard it the G_Note doesn't have Gorilla Glass.
I have a Galaxy Tab 7 (first gen) that does have Gorilla Glass.
I had the Galaxy Tab for a year and used it extensively, literally every single day and got zero scratches on the screen. No seriously... The Galaxy Tab has zero scratches after a year.
I have had the Gnote for roughly 3 weeks and used it in exactly the same was as the tab and it has several scratches on the screen already... :0(
Prospective G Note purchasers - Please remember to factor a screen protector into your considerations when buying the Gnote.. Especially when coming from a device that had a Gorilla glass screen.
I have my Screen protector on order....

what's funny is that my Tab P1000 has several scratches and my Note has none... but i do baby it..

Do you know what material it got the scratches from?

My chat with Samsung Agent :
Pearl: I understand that you want to know if the Samsung Note phone has Gorilla glass or Normal Galss. Am I correct?
Bitter: yes
Pearl: Thank you for the confirmation.
Pearl: Would you mind holding 3 minutes while I gather the required information on your request?
Bitter: Take your time
Pearl: Thank you.
Pearl: Thank you for holding.
Bitter: Welcome back
Pearl: The Samsung Note has the Gorilla Glass.

Anyway, i got a small scratch too :/ Am really taking care of it and its inside a Samsung orginal case aswell .. strange and disappointing.
I know that Gorilla Glass is not a scratch proof, But I did not know that it scratch itself.

What have you done to your screen?
The nexus has the same glass as the note:

I never use screen protectors, i'm not overly protective of my phone but i never have scratches.. I had a Iphone 2g & 3g, HTC HD2, Galaxy S and SII..

Yeah I think you might be on to something because my gnote screen is absolutely flawless after much relatively careful but not obsessive about it use.

i have had a few phones. the screen definately feels softer, like it would scratch easy. Worries me a bit.

Nope - I haven't used a screen protector on any of my previous devices and have never had a need for one... Till now.
In fact my ridiculously intensely used Motorola Milestone 1 that i've had for coming up to 2 years now only has one scratch. The milestone has several scratches and scuffs on metal body though..
Bottom line is that the Galaxy Note Glass is made of inferior quality to the Motorola Milestone and the Galaxy Tab 7 (First Gen).

Any proof to this claim?

1. Gorilla Glass isn't scratch proof (SGSII has 0 scratches while captivate has a few)
2. Samsung and Corning has a partnership (joint company) and may not be using the gorilla glass name. (http://www.scp.samsung.com/)

no its not updated... where are the new tablets?

gorilla glass is not %100 scratch proof. i have a hd2 which %100 has a gorilla glass one day i put it in my pocket with keys it got scratched. after that i tried to scratch it with keys, very sharp utility knife and screwdriver no success i cant scratch it. alsa got a first gen 7" tab too has no scratched on it even i use it worse then hd2. so i think gorilla glasses has some weakness in some contitions if that happens it scratches easily.

I'm a tradesman who uses a Note as my phone and I have no scratches so far. If someone who is doing manual tasks in tight areas all day with a Note just dropped in their top pocket with no screen protector or case can avoid getting scratches without even trying, I have no idea how everyone else is managing to damage theirs :\

My Desire HD has no scratch either after 2 years of heavy use.
I also have a scratch on my 3 weeks old Galaxy Note screen and I didn't do crazy things with it...

May be a bit sand?)

If I m not mistaken company itself declared that the device will have Gorilla Glass

I am in agreement with you NRG on this. I never use screen protectors as I think they look uglier than a scratched screen does!
As long as my phone is kept in a reasonable case the screen should be protected.

There are users here that have experienced cracked/scratched screens on the 7.7 tab already.
I can't find the posts, but to be honest I haven't really tried that hard.

Under P1000 you will see:
Protection: Corning Gorilla Glass
But under P6800 there is nothing about Gorilla Glass..?
I know that gsmarena.com not always have all the information on the device, but anyway.. weird.

i'm almost sure the 7.7 features gorilla, simply because the corning site always took it's time to update on new products. and i can't imagine that samsung wont use this feature on it's otherwise VERY sophisticated and well built 7.7...
example:
it took corning MONTHS to state they use gorilla on the galaxy note,
and in the note forums had been quite similar discussions than this one!

Well, Gorilla Glass isn't nuke proof or anything. It's going to break, scratch, and shatter like any other glass. It just has a higher threshold. I think sometimes people think that since their device has Gorilla Glass then they can be a bit more carefree with it, and then are disappointed that *whoops*, smash!

Heck, with as many separate manufacturing facilities (I think the 7.7 is made in at least two countries) and overlapping product lines as Samsung has, they might not even be sure themselves which device has Gorilla Glass
I think it has gorilla glass, because of it's blueish reflection...
just like on the GSII.
But, hey, maybe I'm crazy

This will be helpful for anybody who wants to repair a scratched screen;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21979437&postcount=4
I also think this baby has the CGG protection
I accidentally dropped a padlock on the screen when the tab is lying down on the floor while I was fiddling with my locker padlock
The padlock's corner hits the screen near the earpiece, I'm using a screen guard and the impact bores through it! I immediately checked for damage, thank God theres none!

Just saying.
I had my hands full with shopping and a screaming baby a month or two ago. I put the tab down on the boot ledge of my car and once I'd finished putting away the shopping, forgetting where I'd put my tab, I closed the lid. It didn't close but I remembered tab, in a moment of horror, a split second before I gave it a slam.
The glass edge had been popped out a couple of mil and amazingly there was no damage. All was fine after pressing it back in.
I don't know if it was the glass or hard plastic of the anymode cover but regardless, the glass itself must be pretty tough.

hello guys,

The email mentioned OLED - the only Galaxy Tab with an OLED screen, at least as far as I know, is our 7.7
Francis
Dunno what it is... but it's STRONG
My friend's dog attacked it , dropped it about 1m (3ft) onto concrete glass-down...and there was no damage to the screen or the internals (edges of the side/back plastic had slightly scuffed paint though).
I've dropped it on tile floors from about the same height or higher (I'm 189cm/6'2" and somewhat nearsighted) while standing up... still works.
I've dropped an E-cig (heavy bugger, and made of metal to boot) directly onto the screen, many times... not a scratch.
Whatever glass it is, it's even more durable than Sammy's Galaxy S1 (aka AT&T Samsung Captivate's) screen, which does show a grand total of 1 tiny scratch (only visible on black, several pixels long). Still no scratches despite my clumsy and at-times drunken lifestyle :good:

I do love the curved edges of the glass

Coming from the s1 which has a little ridge on the edge I truly like the tactical sensation of the curvature of the glass when swiping pages.
I held my s1 today to charge it - as it is currently used as an alarm clock - and it felt strangely small.
I guess the s3 is starting to become the norm for me, anything slower is obsolete.
My 2c
Ive come from the S1 as well and after a couple of weeks usung the S3, the S1 feels small and so slow . Galaxy S3 is the best phone in the world right now.

I've had all 3 Galaxy phones without any screen protection and never had a scratch on any, however there's an element of good fortune and common sense in this, basically if you're careless enough and in the wrong circumstances you'll get scratches regardless of what gorilla glass variant you have.
Bottom line is that screens are scratch resistant, not scratch proof, but having said that I also love the curved edges
Had the S1 (still have it), then the S2 (sold when I got the S3), and must say the S3 is the most beautiful of all. The curved glass makes it look very modern.

My s1 is full of scratches after two years of abuse. Most if not all of them disappear when the screen turns on.
The back of the s3 I gave a nano coating and it is now smooth beyond comprehension. I have not dared to do the front, afraid to damage the original glass coating.

Gorilla Glass 2

Hi guys

It's scratch resistant but but scratch proof....it is resistant to materials that are softer than the screen such as keys. When it comes down to materials that are harder than the screen such as sand. ..it can get scratched.
So I would still use a screen protector if I was you.

Drop-Test on Galaxy Note II
AndroidAuthority carried out their 'Drop Test' on a Note 2 with great results.
The Note 2 is reported to have better build quality than the S3.
In the test the Note 2 was dropped 3 separate times ~ once from the pocket (2 feet), once from the midriff (4 feet) and finally from the ear (5 feet 6 inches). It passed all drop tests.
See video here.
I spit in the face of screen protectors. My Note has stood the test of time (well, 7 months or so) and the screen still has a wonderful sheen and no hints of even a hairline scratch or blemish. This will bode well for resale value as I still see this phone going for 500 bucks by private sellers.
I've had my Note II for about 12 hours and I'm blown away by how much attention to detail was paid to this thing.. the screen feels much more slippery, has an awesome feel around the edges where it's no longer 'sharp' feeling and blends right into the bezel, and the glass feels much more dense. Even the back panel has a grippier feel so I'm even less worried about dropping it (I didn't use a case on my Note either and never once did it slip out of my hands).
Of course, use your own judgement, but a phone this beautiful will not be covered up in any way by me
I agree with you. I never use any screen protectors too.

Android Authority is for me an undercover Apple fanboy site, Just like BGR :|
the amount of posts saying how amazing the iPhone 5 is, is getting annoying tbh
In the i**** 5 Vs S3 they kept making the S3 fall face down and the i**** fall on its side and the guy with the girly name, darcey or something? kept jumping from happiness from the AMAZING and TOUGH screen on the i**** 5 if you look up for any other video with both phones face first you will see both got absolutely destroyed in almost an identical way!
Just dont take any biased BS from them and go to other sites such as Android Police or Phandroid etc

Corning said this about their gorilla glass2.
" Gorilla Glass 2, a glass 20 percent thinner than the original material offering the same scratch resistance, the same strength..."
So its to help weight saving & help reduce phone dimensions, its wise NOT to interpret it as being a stronger or more scratch resistant screen when in a device.

I've gone nearly 2 years now on my Inspire 4G without a single scratch on the glass, and I don't baby my phone.
I don't use screen protectors, not because of the cost but because they ruin the feel of the phone.
Maybe I got a bad screen protector, but the film felt much more coarse than the gorilla glass with the S-Pen. I can't imagine using the S-Pen without that smooth glass. No screen protector for me.

NOW if you work near "GRIT" such as carpenter or construction or roadworker or builder or mechanic
GRIT will wear ANY glass given enough rubbing. GG is not indestructible. it just "tougher" than usual and nothing can hold up to grit forever nothing.
ie USE a sacrificial screen protector if you tend to expose your phone to grit.

how scratch resistant is the screen?

I bought a galaxy s advance 8 months ago and it says it has a gorrila glass screen, but i swear it scratches more easily than my old Galaxy s,
i just wondered what people thought of the screen on the nexus 4?
cheers
jon
The original Galaxy S also features gorilla glas.
As far as I know gorilla glas 2 is just i thinner version of gorilla glas so it's going to be just as hard/easy to scratch as the screen on the Galaxy S.
I think the S2 uses Gorilla Glass 1 and I've not had any scratches on that over the past year. I'm guessing if this is the next version it should be stronger and more scratch resistant.

Nope. Same resistance, just in a thinner form. Which makes your phone thinner, lighter and the screen brighter and more responsive to touch.
