bluetooth tether issue - Xoom General

Why do some users achieve tether and others don't especially with the same tablet and phone. I had a theory and tested it and was right. For those that have managed to get as far as I did with connecting to your phone and having both Bluetooth icons but not be able to connect here is why. Your on wifi it only tethers on 3g I don't have 4 g by me so can't comment if it will work or not. I tried on wifi and the load bar would move an inch and stop then disconnected from wifi and TA DA it achieved tether. Why I have no idea but it works as a matter of fact I am posting this on my xoom connected to my bionic.

I've been using Bluetooth Tethering extensively. It works really well, but is a little temperamental.
On my phone (HTC Magic with a Gingerbread ROM), the *first* time I connect the Xoom, tethering appears to work but doesn't. So, on first connection, I always disconnect, then reconnect, and then I'm good for the rest of the day. This is most likely a bug in my ROM's Bluetooth implementation, but might be more widespread and might be what's making you think Bluetooth tethering just doesn't work at all.
Also, occasionally, and for no apparent reason, the bluetooth stack on the Xoom will go completely non-functional. All I have to do is disable bluetooth, re-enable it, and re-tether to the phone. Only a few seconds, and I'm back in business.
While a perfect Bluetooth tethering solution would be really nice, these two issues are minor enough that I'm considering not upgrading my now ancient phone until the 3 year contract is up.

WiFi Tethering dropping often

On my droid X my wifi tethering drops often using either wifi for root users or verizons app with the NAI changed (aka not paying for it), Anyone else having this problem. laptop just stops working or netflix streaming stops but device appears to still be connected. Never really used the wifi tethering enough with my other devices in the past (dinc, droid 1, etc) but its annoying now that i have a small laptop and try to use it often. PDAnet works perfect via cable, so maybe its the droid x wifi driver thing?

by drop do you mean the cellular data connection or the wifi connection? one possibility (unlikely) is if you are receiving a lot of texts. I know that on my X when i receive a text the data connection stops while receiving a text. By stops i mean the data arrows are inactive every time i receive a text regardless of what i'm doing with my data. however i doubt this would cause your netflix to stop. do you have certain power settings to change the data state when the screen turns off or something?
Mine does the same thing. I can use it usually anywhere from 2 minutes up to 10-15 mins max. It does this using 3G Mobile Hotspot & Wireless Tether (ad-hoc). In fact I was looking around on Google, and saw a bunch of people with the same issue, ones that were even paying for the tethering option. Mine is so bad that I don't even bother with it anymore.
I'm using the PDAnet USB connection right now, and it's working without issue. I also have great results with Bluetooth DUN, but it 'feels' slightly slower when compared to the USB connection. (which could all be in my mind)
I've had it happen on the stock OTA 2.2, Rubix Blurry .3, and now Rubix Blurry 1.0. I had it happen overclocked @ 1.2, LV 1Ghz, underclocked LV @ .9 and am currently back at stock speed and voltage.
im assuming its moto's hardware then shame with fission i was actually starting to like the phone alot
Before my internet was connected at my home I used my phone as a hot spot and it worked flawlessly. I never had a connection issue except when I would receive phone calls.
yep. mine stops ALOT. ill get lucky and stay connected for a few minutes here and there but it will disconnect non the less. PDA is ok but still.
3g hotspot and wifi tether for root useres works great for me. Both only drop when I receive a call such sucks if you are in the middle of modern warfare match.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Mine is terrible. 2-5 minutes max connection time. I had to switch to usb as well.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Mine did this too,but all my smart phones have. Not just motos. A few wks ago I started using barnacle on my dx and havent had much of of a problem since. Maybe once an hr I have to stop and start tether again. It was acting up yesterday but I figured out battery manager app will kill the connection. Lemme know if it works or it's just a coincidence.

Wifi Xoom and BT Tether

I've found several threads on the subject of Tethering a Xoom via BT and Wifi but I'm not having much luck and there's a lot of confusion about providers/Xoom versions/phones, etc. so rather than tag on to a thread I hope it's ok to start a new one.
I have the following:
Wifi Xoom (NOT the Verizon version, the one that just came out on March 27th here in the US)
HTC Hero GSM - completely unlocked (purchased in Europe). Running Android 2.1 standard update from HTC. I'm using the AT&T data plan but device is not an AT&T device at all.
I would like to see if I can Tether the Xoom to the phone and use the data connection I have on it. I understand that the Xoom's chipset doesn't allow for Ad-hoc networks. I've tried to do a Wifi Tether and although that works from my Laptop to my Phone the Xoom doesn't see the ad-hoc network. I don't believe there is any way for me to make the Wifi Tether work in Infrastructure mode so I don't think there is an option there (unless the Xoom can be modified somehow to see Ad-hoc).
So now I'm trying to use Bluetooth Tethering. I've tried both PdaNet and Wifi Tether (v2.0.7 and phone rooted via SuperOneClick). Both seem to start up fine and are running. I then pair the two devices but as many others have reported, I don't see any Tethering options on the Xoom so I'm stuck.
I've tried different orders of things... run Wifi Tether, pair, vs. pair then Wifi Tether, work with Airplane mode on vs. off, Wifi on vs. off, etc. but I never see that Tether option show up.
Anyone have this working with an HTC Hero GSM by any chance? Note that this is the Wifi-Only Xoom which seems to have different features than the Verizon 3G Xoom. Could it be that the Hero itself doesn't support this profile? Or can the Xoom be modified to force it to think the device is tetherable.
I'm not sure if rooting the Xoom would help any or maybe flashing a custom ROM like CM7 on the Hero would help any. I'd prefer not to have to do this but if someone has this working with my exact configuration I'd give it a try.
Any help would be appreciated.
From what i know, most tethering tech /apps are establishing a ad-hoc network' which the xoom isnt capable of...
I too have the Xoom wifi only version with a HTC rooted CDMA Hero.
As everyone knows now the Ad hoc will not tether with the Xoom infrastructure as of the latest.
I too get full bluetooth tethering signal from Wireless Tether, but like you the Xoom will "pair but not connect". As you, I am confused as to whether it is the Hero or the Xoom Wifi which will not connect to the bluetooth tether.
I suspect it is the Xoom Wifi, but would also like a definitive answer and better yet a viable solution.
I have no issue tethering my Xoom (Wifi model) with my Verizon Motorola Droid (1 Gen) over Bluetooth.
My Droid is full rooted with custom Gingerbread ROM (2.3.3) and Overclocked Kernel from ChevyNo1. His kernels are everything enable such as tethering and VPN. This might be the difference for some.
The one annoying thing is that everytime I enable the hotspot on my Droid, I have to go into the Xoom settings and enable tethering on the connection to my Droid. This also has to be done if either device goes not a range and brought back. I am trying to find a widget or a Tasker script to auto enable this.
Be sure to already start the wifi tether program on your phone (selecting the blutooth option on it) then bring up the blutooth settings menu on your xoom, just press and hold the little wrench you see to the right of your phone icon. it should bring up the tether option...just press that and you should see it conect via blutooth.
Just be sure to have the wifi tether app on your phone already on and set for blutooth. This works for me everytime (running the atrix) and shoujkd also work for your phone too.
Still no luck on my side with the Tethering on while I do the pairing and/or when I touch the wrench icon.
I'd like to understand more about how the Bluetooth profile is detected. Does my phone have to publish out a certain profile? Or does the Xoom have a list of device types that it knows are tetherable? I've read on another forum that it seemed like Motorola devices like the Droid worked whereas HTCs didn't seem to. I'm wondering if the Xoom detects the type of phone it's connecting to and decides whether it's tetherable or not... Anyone know? If this is the case maybe there's some file that can be tweaked on the Xoom to include additional devices or change the phone to broadcast out a different device name, etc. Maybe I should try changing my device name to 'Droid' or something.
Just guessing at this point....
I had the same issue with my droid, bluetooth tether is a pretty good alternative. I made a video of it, works with most phones with that create the Ad-Hoc. Check out video below to see the easy steps involved. Root on phone required.
Thanks for posting the video. This is exactly what I tried but does not work with my HTC Hero and my Wifi Xoom. I'm going to see if I rename my Bluetooth device name to 'Droid' to see if that makes any difference. I doubt it....

I ran into a little bug, and it wouldn't recognize my droid. I had to unpair and turn on the bluetooth tether app. Then pair. The xoom then recognized the bluetooth tether. Hopefully this works, I apologize if it doesn't.
My wifi Xoom works perfectly paired with a CM7 Nexus One.
App: wireless tether
pd: key is the wrench
I tried renaming the bluetooth device name to 'Droid' but that didn't make a difference. I'm sure I'm following the same steps as in the video. Somehow the Xoom doesn't see the Hero as a Tetherable device...
Maybe there are some differences in Bluetooth chipsets?
Wifi tethering works with the Desire Z or the G2
I assume the network it creates is not an ad-hoc otherwise the xoom wouldn't have recognized it?
It's either not ad-hoc or you're using Bluetooth. You'd have to explicitly choose Bluetooth tethering in the Wireless Tether app so I assume you're using Wifi.
From what I understand some phones (the ones that are meant to be used as wifi hotspots) do broadcast in infrastructure mode rather than ad-hoc so I assume that's why it works for you.
Also of note is that Honeycomb only supports PAN tethering, and not DUN tethering.
Your phone also has to have "bluetooth tethering" turned on (however you do it, I don't have an android phone) so that the Xoom can discover the PAN bluetooth service.
Interesting. Something to read up more on. I'm using Wireless Tether to do the Bluetooth tethering but maybe I need something additional switched on. At least it's another direction to look at....
Seems like someone figured out how to get the Xoom to listen to Ad-hoc networks but that needs the Xoom rooted so I'll also research that. I prefer Bluetooth tethering since it uses less juice on the phone....
It does seem that "Wireless Tether" which is what I'm using on my HTC Hero, is running in PAN mode. If I look at the app's directory it has a pand executable, etc. and when I'm running the tether it is running pand in the process list.
Still, if I pair, even while it's running pand the Xoom still doesn't recognize it as tetherable. Grrr.... Wish I had another bluetooth client I could try to connect to see if it's the phone or the Xoom but I don't have anything else.
I'm wondering if it's because I have the Android 2.1 update for my Hero. Wireless Tether seems to support the 1.5 version of the Hero but doesn't mention 2.1. Maybe there is an incompatibility there...
Anyway, will continue to try to figure it out.
Rosso, your not on your own, I am still trying to figure this out on my hero running froydvillian. I have done the wifi ad hoc mod and thats working for me but BT tethering woudl be better, I will let you know If i ever find a solution.
I did see someone else loaded CM7 for the hero and then BT tether worked, but CM7 seems to have been pulled for the hero at the moment due to stability issues.
I have a droid eris (verizon's cdma hero) and I have the same exact problems but I'm on cm7and using wireless tether. I can get the to devices and connect via tethering but 5 seconds after that my phone reboots.
Just picked up a wifi-Xoom for my wife over the weekend. Tried to get it connected to my phone (HD2) as a wifi hotspot and was having problems (the ad-hoc problem). The xoom wouldn't even see the hotspot. I am running AmeriCanDroid 0413 build and it has wifi tether v. 3.0-pre11. So I switched back to winmo and still nothing, then I tried going to Darkstone SuperRam 1.5 (my fallback build). It has an older version of wifi tether, I think 2.06 or something like that and got the xoom to connect. I haven't had a lot of time to fool around with it, but it was able to get a network connection. Maybe you could try an older version of the wifi tether? I haven't experimented with the BT tethering yet. I don't want to root the xoom yet, maybe when my wife is tired of it.
/edit
Just checked the wifi-tether website and there is a new version of wifi tether and it supports softap which may help the xoom recognize the wifi hotspot.
Hi, I have just managed to get my hero bluetooth tethered to my htc hero.
The process I followed was basically what everyone has said:-
download wireless tether i am using 2.0.7
1. start bluetooth on phone and xoom (make discoverable)
2. Do not pair the devices yet
3. start up wireless tether, select bluetooth and tap to start the actual service
4. go back to bluetooth on your xoom and pair the devices
I then got an icon I had not had before and when I tapped the wrench I got the option to tether.
As for wifi tether your phone needs to put out infrastructure wifi for the xoom to see it, if its ad-hoc, you'll need to do the wifi mod so that he xoom sees adhoc
although as stated the new version of 'wifi tether' (which just seems to be the new name for the 'wireless tether' app) may fix that? but doesn't seem to support bluetooth as the 2.07 version does

Tethering via bluetooth

hello,
im having problem tethering my gtab connection to phone using bluetooth. pairing works as expected, but when i see on phone, gtab dont have tethering capability in bluetooth
do you guys have same problem?
No, It is the other way around. I've used my GTab tethered over BT from my old WM phone without problem. What phone do you have? Most Samsung Android phones don't have BT PAN service (the service required for BT tethering).
EDIT: are you try to use cell connection from phone or you try to use cell connection from GTab. What I have done is to connect my wi-fi GTab to my phone's 3G connection. Not sure the other way around.
Most HTC phones also do not have it - motorola phones seem to have it (droid X for sure)

[Q] Pairing with TF101 tablet

I have looked but can't find a solution. I have the transformer 101 tablet and can't get it to connect to my tmobile mytouch 4g. I'm posting in this forum because I can get the tablet to connect to my computer so I figure it has something to do with the phone. I'm trying to get a bluetooth connection so I can tether. I don't use much data but I'd like to know I could do it with the tablet and make a connection if wifi not around. I have rooted and installed stock Android 2.3.4. I don't know much about Bluetooth or WIFi but from my readings I'm think it might have something to do with PAN BT profile. If this is the case, is this a software thing? Is their a ROM that has the PAN BT profile? I like some of the Sense Apps so I'd like to stay with a stable Sense ROM. I'd like to be able to stream Navigator when I need it or brows the internet while waiting in the parking lot for my husband. Yes I can do it on the phone but my eyes are bad and a larger screen is so nice. I don't come anywhere near a GB of data each month...just want to be able to connect when sitting in my car and give myself a bigger screen.
I must be missing something here. Why not install wifi tether or one of the myriad sense 3.5 ROMS in the dev section that ALL have a working wifi hotspot?
Well my thinking may be wrong on how Bluetooth and wifi work but I was thinking there isn't always a wifi connection, but there would always be a signal with bluetooth connecting the tablet to the phones 3G and 4G. I was hoping that, if tablet paired to phone when traveling, I could use the bigger screen on the tablet and navigation would run like on the phone. I'd like to use the tablet as much as possible and I'm thinking that in the country there wouldn't be any wifi hotspots. Sorry if I've got this all wrong. Most of the time I would use wifi and I've only used that at home or work....never hotspots.
As far as ROM's go, I was thinking of the Virtuous Affinity or Unity ROM's but didn't know if they were going to give me the bluetooth connection I was looking for. I can't remember but thought I read that you couldn't do some things in 3.5 that you could do with ealier versions. Do you know why the tablet can't connect with the MyTouch? Is it the PAN BT profile. I know the tablet doesn't do adhoc. Sorry but I did try to read up on it. I was just thinking of the message I see. They are paired but they wont connect. I click on the bluetooth device but it doesn't connect
I've tried to understand what your asking but I'm still confused. Are you trying to make a wifi hotspot off your phone, then connect your transformer to the hotspot, to use the internet?
If I helped, give thanks, if you please.

There a couple things wrong with this post 1) the tablet does support and use AD-HOC tethering. I know that for a fact because I've had people connect to my home network via my tablet just to show off. Pretty embarrassing making them use my Android Tablet to connect their iPad to my home network. 2) If you are just wanting to use your tablet as a navigation unit, use the Google maps while you are connected to WiFi to find directions to where you want to go, then press the navigate button. It'll work w/o a data signal. I've done it several times. 3) you don't need blue-tooth to bridge the Tablet to the phone. This doesn't work like Blackberries and the playbook. You can use the Wi-Fi Tether .apk from Google's source code to do just that. [http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list] 4) There has to be a blue tooth stack installed on the Phone, and on the Tablet that will allow them to share blue tooth connections for Internet. I have TF101 and have yet to find such a BT stack.

BLUETOOTH not WORKING WHEN WIFI is TURNED ON AND CONNECTED

aka "Bluetooth kills WiFi"
google nexus 4 4.2.2
Build number JDQ39
When WiFi is turned on, AND CONNECTED, and I make a call using Bluetooth device the connection starts cutting. The WiFi icon in the notification bar disappears then appears again, the radio icon starts connecting/swapping between to 3G or H also the 3G/H icon changes from blue to gray, during this time the connection drops.
If the WiFi is off everything works normally. I talked to Google but no help there, it's like the first time they hear of Bluetooth issues.
The issue is same with stock ROM or AOKP built 5 on NEXUS 4
However, I use the same Bluetooth, voyager-pro hd+, with galaxy nexus 4.2.2 build jdq39 and I have no issues with it. not rooted, stock ROM
Any ideas or fix. If it was something to do with rooting or custom ROM why it was not fixed after I restored it to stock ROM? and why no issues using it on galaxy nexus having the exact same software?
Edit: just tried this on 2nd brand new nexus 4 in our household, not rooted or modified in any way, same issue
OK. THAT'S KNOWN ISSUE https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=41631

Pulled a Linksys E2500 5GHz router I wasn't using out of the closet, and disabled the onboard routing crap on the uverse 2wire router. Nexus plays nice with bluetooth at home now, even in 2.4GHz mode. Gave me a reason to stop using the uverse crap, but it's still kind of annoying that the N4 is so finicky with wifi. I'll stick it out!
meh, I am returning mine and sticking to my old galaxy nexus. I need bluetooth ON and WiFi ON all the time
will buy it again if fixed or just get n5

Do you listen to music only? Do you try to call someone and have productive conversation over the Bluetooth, while WiFi is ON and connected? If the WiFi is ON but connected the problem is not that bad.
I tried with two devices at home, then called a friend, that lives 1000 miles away, with N4. same results. Total of three independent devices tested.
I am using Plantronics Voyager HD+, one of the best headsets out there.

I use my bluetooth for everything.. And works fine:good:
This happens on my N7 running 4.2.2. I have been using a MOGA controller and a Motorola S10 headset.
Everything with work for about 15 min then my network will disappear. When I go into WiFi, it shows no available networks, even though there are like 15 near me.
The only way to reconnect is to disable Bluetooth. Networks immediately show back up and reconnect. Then I can reenable Bluetooth and continue.
I had this issue with MOGA controller originally and wrote them. They said it is an issue with the N7 and N4 and to disable WiFi when playing games. I tested and the controller is perfect with WiFi off.
Streaming Netflix while paired to wireless headset works for about 15 and then quits. I have to toggle Bluetooth to get another 15 min out of it.
Yeah. My N4's been dropping wifi when bluetooth is in use ever since I got the thing. Got tasker to turn wifi off when bluetooth is connected, and vice-versa... Sad I can't use both. Nice to have a 5GB data plan. Comes in handy. But still, should not need to work around it.

I can't even get my N4 to connect to the bluetooth in my car if wifi is turned on. It's supremely annoying. Combined with the not being able to turn bluetooth off (because you can't turn it back on without a reboot usually) it's making me hate this phone.
Anyone else have bluetooth connectivity issues with wifi on?

Tasker - a great solution.
Wish Google/LG fixed this already.
BT/WiFi collisions are a pain in the ass for mobile device engineers. But that's no excuse for Google to sign off on this product with such a bug.
Have excatly the same issue with my N7. According to where I bought it it's a known issue but you can't RMA it since it's a workaround (do not use BT and WiFi at the same time).
It's crap cause I bought the tablet to get rid of cables and use to control my music. Now I first have to download by WiFi and then turn it off to use BT to control my receiver.

wait, so then can someone explain to me how I can stream Pandora over wifi through my Jambox? Is that not possible?

Yes, the problem in the united states is with AT&T wifi router. So for people in the USA if you have att router or live in area where you have apartment complexes etc and suspect they use ATT you will have a problem. The solution is to go to WiFI settings > Advanced and choose 5G only. DO NOT use "auto" or "2.4G" option. This solves the problem. In other countries would be some other router problem. the WiFi chip on N4 does not play well with some routers around when operates at all frequencies.
That's why the confusion. some people say "all works fine" other reporting problem not suspicion they have ATT router or live near residency with one.
If you rely on wifi mostly and no 5g option then no solution.
Has nothing to do with ATT router.
I have a WNDR3700 and it happens to me on my N4 and N7's when at 2.4ghz (you can see the (dis)conntects)- moving to 5gig solves it but I loose a lot of range... (Just watch your signal meter when you are steaming over net/BT and switch between 2 and 5g - you will see the difference in behavior)
It's a Qualcomm driver issue that has not been fixed - boo on LG and Google for allowing this to get into their flagship devices and leaving it in this state for so long...
I should fire up my old N1 to stream music... Shame...
I have the same issue. I have a nexus 4 stock 4.3 rooted and if I have the wifi on and connected, when I make a call with my Jawbone Era headset I can't listen well the other person. His voice has a lot of pauses. When I turn off wifi everything is OK. This is very annoying.
