Probably yes. Unlock-process (with unlock code) simply removes lock and after it you can use any sim.
But...
Official ROM with Android 1.5 does not allow skip google activation. You need setup it at startup.
I don't remember what happened on Android 1.6
Official ROMs with Android 2.1+ can skip google activation to setup it later.

i said probably yes too.... but i would like to know anyone has actually got it working with any network other than t mobile or att with a unlocked phone

What exactly do you want?
Unlock-code will remove lock from T-Mobile. After that you can use any mobile operator's sim. Any GSM sim...
If you want use mobile internet, but phone does not know apn-settings for your provider - add them manually...

I've bought a new(even not unboxed) android on Ebay and there is one small problem to start it. Can someone please help me with this???
Thank you!
i didnt know that u need to go through the activation process to enter the unlock code, if that's true, your so screwed
Have you put in a sim card yet? any sim card?
If you put in your sim card (non-tmobile) it should ask for unlock code first.

They have good Android support, if this doesn't help, try there HTC G1 support, it's free and easy.

Unlocking Vs. Debranding/Flashing Vs. Rooting -- Clarified

Hi All,
There have been many confused members (especially the noobs) who do not understand the difference between unlocking and debranding so I wanted to start this thread to clarify this matter once and for all.
Debranding/Flashing: : This is when you flash some firmware other than your original operator's FW. For example, if you have an AT&T or O2 branded X10, when you flash/debrand generic fw (or any other fw of your choosing) you simply get rid of the "branded" software pre-loaded on your phone. Hence, the term "de-branding". This does not mean that your phone is unlocked. You will still have to use your original operator's SIM card, like AT&T or O2, to use your phone EVEN AFTER flashing/debranding your handset.
Unlocking: This is when you "network unlock" your phone and are able to use it with any GSM operator you choose other than your original operator. For example, you have an AT&T or O2 branded X10 and you want to use it on T-Mobile US or UK, can you do that after simply flashing/debranding? The answer is NO. Why? Because your phone still requires a special code to be entered before it becomes network unlocked. For further reading, please go here.
Rooting: Rooting is a process that allows users of cellphones, and other devices, running the Android operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's Linux subsystem, similar to jailbreaking on Apple devices running the iOS operating system, overcoming limitations that the carriers and manufacturers put on such phones. Rooting makes it possible to use custom versions of the Android system such as CyanogenMod, supporting features unavailable in stock ROMs. It also allows for newer versions of Android not supplied by the original device manufacturer. Source: Wikipedia
Debranding, unlocking and rooting are mutually exclusive.
FAQs:
1. If I flash to generic firmware using Bin4ry's flash tool, will I unlock my phone?
No, you will simply debrand your phone but, you will still need to get the unlock code.
2. If I debrand my phone and then unlock it but, I would like to go back to my original branded firmware, will my phone become re-locked to that network again?
No, once you unlock your phone, it will remain that way no matter what firmware you flash in the future.
3. How do I know if my phone is network unlocked?
The simple way is to pop in another operator's SIM card, for example you have an AT&T branded X10a, then you can use a T-Mobile SIM card. If your phone reboots and you do not get a "enter code" screen and you see that you are connected to the T-Mobile network then your phone is network unlocked and can be used with any GSM operator.
Another way is to go into the hidden service menu. In the lock screen (the one with the swype animation) press the following sequence of buttons (Home, Back, Back, Home, Back, Home, Home, Back). If you are on 1.6 replace Home with Menu. Then go to service info --> SIM lock. In the top line, if you find this [X] Network 10, then your phone is locked. If you find this [ ] Network 10, then your phone is unlocked.
4. How can I get my unlock code?
There are a few sites from which people were successful in getting their unlock codes like MobileInCanada and CellUnlocker. There is also a thread by Xda-member "Lancez" here who can provide unlock codes for a fee. Currently, there is no known method of unlocking your phone for free.
I hope I have clarified this matter for everyone.

Well, thanks for the info; however, what I wanted to know was the "technology" behind the lock codes which can survive after flashing. What do they use to keep them safe? In which part of the software is the code stored? or most likely, the code should be hardcoded then.

baseband version: 2.0.46
Kernel Version: [email protected]#1

I think there was a typo above. It is more like 9% of the time. Lol. Unless you type exactly word for word the results often send you to completely different forums, even though it says "search this forum". Test it yourself... Search using XDA search button and then do a Google Search. Google is much better, for me anyway.

I don't think that's correct. My x10 has 0 next to Sim but it's definitely locked to t-mobile. There's an X in the box next to where it says network for locked phones.

The [X] means it is locked. The 0 means that you have 0 attempts left to enter the unlock code. You get 10 in a new phone. Did you enter the codes too many times or did you buy your phone pre-owned?
What is the hidden unlock for ATT SM N910a? ive gone through the unlock code process through ATT and CellularUlock.net and got a code and it wont.

[Q] Unlocking a hd2 and then installing android. will this remove the sim unlock?

Hi I want to sim unlock my hd2, and then install Nandroid operating system onto it. Will this effect the sim unlock? , was talking to a man in a shop and he said it might. Its one I have for sale and someone wants this doing to it, Its locked to T mobile uk at the moment.
p.s did do a quick search but am at work so shouldnt be on her
Thanks
Short answer is NO.
If you want to sim unlock your device you need to contact your provider.
Go to a store where they can unlock it for you or buy a code on the internet.
Good Luck
thanks for the reply, but what i meant was if i have it unlocked, then install nandroid will this remove the sim unlock?
No, i can guarantee you it wont. I got mine unlocked and had no problem switching SIM cards in WP7, Android or WM 6.5 . Cheers.
quick question to anyone that can answer this....
can you sim unlock while android is installed..i called tmobile requested the code but dkno if i can unlock with android running
I'm not 100% guaranteed, but i think that even runing android you can unlock your phone
I'd assume that you would be able to once Android recognizes your IMEI so yeah it should work.

Hi, and if i will re-flash a WM ROM???
the unlock will be?
Let's say this once, for the benefit of anyone else who reads this thread:
SIM UNLOCKING YOUR HD2 IS UNAFFECTED BY ROM CHANGES.
Once you SIM unlock the device, regardless of operating system currently installed, it will stay SIM unlocked even through ROM changes, including WP7/Android/WM6.5/etc/etc.

HD2 Carrier Unlock

Hello,
Would somebody advise if the HSPL 2.08 unlocks the HD2 to use with different carrier? Long time ago I unlocked my T-Mobile HD to be used with custom ROMs. Today I switched service from T-Mobile to AT&T and found HD2 asking me for unlock PIN. I thought the phone was carrier unlocked with HSPL.
Is there a way to get the unlock pin for the phone for free, besides calling T-Mobile?
Thanks
No!
HSPL only unlocks it to be flashed to another ROM.
In your case you need a sim/network unlock code.
If you have a contract with TMobile you should ask them an unlock code, otherwise you should buy one on-line(ebay or whatever).
That's what I figured. Thanks for clarification.
what if it does not ask for PIN still shows no network

Could be a few things.
But some questions first.
1) Are you on Winmo or Android or WP7?
2) Are you 100% sure your SIM card is in the phone correctly?
I am on Winmo also have tried using wp7 and android but no luck

Anyone can unlock Sprint LG V20 remotly ?

When i pop in my t-mobile sim card, the phone does not recognize it or prompt me for a network code or anything ? anyone know of someone or a service to sim unlock the sprint variant ? Thank you
Bump
I'm also trying to figure this out, as I am not able to even connect to T-Mobiles server to trigger the unlock. All that my unlock app does is just sit there with a spinning wheel and say " connecting to server, please wait " , so if I cannot get passed that than I'm screwed cause it's gotta at least prompt me if I want to unlock permanently or temporary. Darn thing just keeps spinning like I'm blocked from even connecting. Can someone who is rooted check to see if their phone will prompt for an unlock or not? Thanks in advance!

If the T-Mobile unlock app is on the Sprint version (Which I doubt) use this site https://www.unlockbase.com/phone-unlocking-service/tmobile-device-unlock-app-official-unlock/ otherwise you might contact them and find out if they can sim unlock it another way. Or sideload the T-Mobile Unlock app and see if it works that way (I doubt this would work but you never know til you try)

If you are rooted, it can detect it and it will stay on the spinning wheel. Only way I got it to work was to restore to stock no root and it worked (It kept giving me a unlock not available until I bought the unlock service from https://www.unlockbase.com/phone-unlocking-service/tmobile-device-unlock-app-official-unlock/ )

is the phone paid off in full? no more monthly obligation? if not that's the reason you can't unlock. it's because you don't own the phone sprint does. NO ONE can get a device unlocked from distributor without full payment fulfillment.
