Let's port ICS to the Continuum? - Continuum General

C'mon, guys! There are so many great developers in our Continuum community, and I'm sure we can do it. Plus, "in theory" it's possible for any android device to run ICS. So why not the Continuum? We can't be left behind, especially with all of these other devices getting ports. I know I'm a newbie, but I thought I'd give you guys that kinda motivational speech.

Except, read through forum about any other rom port and you would find answers.

If you want it ported, you can try doing it yourself xD
That being said, we should be happy that we have froyo, let alone gingerbread and ICS, because we shouldn't even technically have that!
And btw: it isn't as easy as one.two.three... For us, a new kernel would be needed, first of all.. And that is already near impossible xD

The epic software will not run easily on our phone, and most devs prefer to have an AOSP build rather than try to hack samsung's software to work. Just because the epic is a "galaxy s" phone and runs on CDMA doesnt mean it is the same as our phone. The whole hardware for the phone portion is different.

It takes some amount of patience to search rather than having the info just spoon-fed to the individual.

Nexus One owners feeling a little Nexus S envy can breathe a little easier -- we're hearing that Android 2.3 Gingerbread is being pushed out to the N1 as we speak. We'd imagine that all the slick new features that don't require new hardware (like NFC support) will be there, and we're definitely interested in playing with this built-in WiFi calling stack. We'll let you know what we find -- won't you do the same?

It shouldnt take to long 2.3 is already going out to the N1 so shouldnt it be super easy to port over in a day or two?

i don't see any major attractive things make me update to 2.3 immediately.
the most excited feature is the improved voice command. and improved keyboard.
What interests me is the new dalvik-cache handling, supposed to speed things up a lot.

Not really, but the actual dump from a real device would be nice, because it has drivers, and things like that. When infinitybiff makes a release, rest assured, not everything will work right away. I quote infinitybiff when I say that.
at least its good to have something out early, then work on fixes....good stuff
Heres some screenshots of the (slightly) new theme for gingerbread.

Well, i'm currently good for this as well, but look at it, the only devs that people know for vibrants are: Eugene, Master, TW thats pretty much it i think?
TW is probably a bunch of people, master, he seems to be working alone currently, and Eugene is probably working with barak or something.

If I'm not mistaken that 10 million number is the whole Galaxy S line. 3 of the phones in that line have had very little, if any, in the way of leaked software thereby putting the need for anything new at a stand still. The majority of the 10 million sold have been I9000 which has seen plenty of development. As for the Vibrant I count 4 active Dev teams that are major players here, Eugene, Team Whiskey, Master, Heathen. Then you have a couple others releasing random items. To my recollection there has been a new rom or update to existing roms every single week. I'm not sure what else you would want maybe a new rom to flash daily? One of those devs has stop posting here but those that like his work have given us all the updated info. All of the Devs with the exception of Heathen have slowed down a bit for various reason known only to them but I'd speculate 3 possible reasons. 1. Holidays man people want to relax a little. 2. Nothing new to work with in a few weeks and the last 3 or 4 leaks have just been tweaks to 2.2. And finally C. with 2.3 on the horizon I'm sure some of the devs are busy finding a way to bring us all a stable/working version.
Hope this clears everything up for you.

What "bet"?
Official froyo doesn't make people want to develop this phone.

Not exactly true. I mean I understand the sentiment. But it only goes up to a point. I thoroughly expect either an official 2.3 release sometime this year, or at least a stable 2.3 port from the Nexus considering it's pretty much the same exact phone. But after that, I'm not expecting much considering the handset with be EOL by then.
I was a former G1 owner, and I think it was great that we were able to get an official build of 1.6, and even though CM worked pretty well on it (at least the Eclair versions), you can't really expect that it would run Froyo well.
Bottom line, I think if every handset was updated within the first 1.5 years of it's life, people would be satisfied and there would be a lot less frustration about lack of support with Android in general.

i love the MIUI phone dialer and power menu that has all the shortcuts!
of course we want MIUI for this device.... I can only imagine how cool it will be... but we have a LONG time to wait before this happens
I wish I understood more about the coding and all the other stuff required to get this kind of a project started, because I would be right on to it...
is there that much of a difference in the way the SGS1/2 work other than hardware differences? sorry if this is in fact a nooby question lol
Well, in the aspects of custom ROMs and modding, hardware IS the difference. I'm not sure if the devs can use much of the old code when porting CM/MIUI to our new baby.
You will need CM first, all works of MIUI are based on CM source code.
I really really want miui on sgs2. I NEED it
Perhaps i won't buy the phone if miui isn't suported. I would pay 30€ to get miui.

I'd pay the same, CM is on it's way though, might still be a while before it's out but it IS on its way.

When Are We Getting a Better Working Sense 4 and Android 4 ROMs?

At this point, things that don't work are the things I need to work. Nothing has changed for nearly two months now, so I'm just curious.
the impatience and greed around here is unbelievable...
if you want something to be fully working and perfect, you gotta make it yourself. plus rushing things isn't gonna do any good at all. it will come, just be patient... be glad we even have a Sense 4 ROM...
Dude, seriously, it was a question. That's it. Not a complaint, not impatience, and not greed. The assumptions of others on this forum is what is really unbelievable. I knew that some joker would answer back like that.
Saranhai is part of the team that brings a lot of ROM's to this device. He is probably a little frustrated that it seems like is never good enough, or fast enough for people. Your question may have been honest and purely innocent, but with the way things have been around here lately his reaction is somewhat understandable.
Several devs are hard at work on sense 4 kernels and the camera. When they have a usable fix, it will be released. If you want to add to their resolve you could always donate

I'm patiently waiting too. And so you know, I'm posting this in a good mood, not frustrated or being smart. But from what I understand is its basically at a standstill until devs can get the necassary kernel to get the camera working. It's not that they are being slow..they simply don't have what's needed to accomplish it. And I may be entirely wrong..that's just what I have been thinking.

Take it at face value MF. It's my fault that you put your own thoughts into a simple question? Seriously, it's all too common on XDA for people to needlessly attack others on the basis that people are too sensitive.
See the answer that JJ gave? That's all that we needed. I wanted to know the issues the devs were facing? If anything I was concerned, because I've never seen something give this kind of trouble on this phone. We all appreciate the works that devs do. We all act like kids in a candy store for the work that devs do.

The issue is that there's no HTC official kernel source for any "sister" devices - DHD/DS, and they didn't get the HTC ICS update either. Without the kernel source, devs have to use kernel source from other, less compatible devices to compile the kernel, and the binary drivers from those devices don't match the HW. There are no skilled enough and/or willing enough devs to dig in the kernel code and rewrite the API towards the drivers to match the older, working drivers from Gingerbread (that's what was done back in Gingerbread release time), mostly because it's a huge work that brings almost no benefits - the official code is likely to be better anyway, and its release will most likely be closer to this point in time than the shortest time required for "enthusiast" work.

I think in layman terms, that means if someone attempted to rewrite source code to match the h/w in the Glacier, by the time they would finish, better & more compatible code would be here anyway. So its best, at this point, to just wait patiently?
