Go Launcher EX fails to update - Kindle Fire General

Interesting, installed Go Launcher EX from amazon's marketplace and it is version 3.51. There is of course a newer version out and the google market wont let me see it. It says not compatible for some odd reason. Managed to get the newest version apk and it will not install. Anybody have suggestions?

This has something to do with either the DPI or some provisions in the app itself. There are a lot of apps which you won't be able to install such as;
Wifi File Explorer PRO
Citibank
etc....

That is a bummer, I went ahead and switched over to ADW Launcher. Noticed that the font sometime freaks out and turns really big. Tilt the device to switch orientation and it fixes it. Anything else better than ADW Launcher? It seems just a tad on the simple side compared to Go Launcher.

Funny... setting up a second Kindle Fire, and the Go Launcher EX is no longer available in the amazon market. Actually, it is in the market, just doesn't know on the KF now.

[Q] How do I get the Gtalk icon to show on the Fire?

I side loaded GTalk and it works great, but like installing the Market there is no icon that shows up. I used MarketOpener to get a Market icon, but the only way I can get to Gtalk to by going into Titanium Backup and launching from there.
Anyone know if a way to get that icon to show up?

This is your first post?
o Are you rooted? Assumed but you really didn't say.
o What ROM are you using?
o If Stock are you using the Amazon Launcher?
Been visiting the forum since I got my Droid over a year ago, but yes that is my first post.
I am rooted with the stock amazon ROM and Amazon Launcher.
I've followed several guides in the Fire forum to root and install the gapps. Everything worked great. Like many others, the Google Market icon did not show up in the launcher but I used the MarketOpener app to put one on there. GTalk was not included in my gapps zip, and was not available in the Market (not sure why) so I side loaded from my Droid with CM7. I'm having the exact issue with GTalk that a lot of people have with installing the Market; there's is no icon for it.
I was just wondering if anyone had a work around to get the icon to show up?
Gtalk is not a market app, which is why you don't find it there.
You can load it, but the Kindle Launcher is somewhat limited in what it shows. That is why the Market Opener was created. There is no equivalent version of that for Gtalk.
If you use another launcher, you will have no problem seeing it as a normal app.
krelvinaz thanks.
Question:
I notice in your sig that you're using a custom ROM on your Fire, MoDaCo.
How do you like this and how is it vs something like CM7? I already have CW Recovery installed so I'm tempted to backup my current and try out MoDaCo. If I don't like it I guess I can revert back.
Any install 'gotchas' when installing MoDaCo or is it just moving the ROM to the SD and running it via recovery?
Thanks again.
GR6 is a pretty stock ROM that has some nice tweaks in it, like location services working, Amazon market (now Google play) sees it as a transformer instead of kindle, meaning more apps show up.
Installation is very easy, you don't even need to wipe.
I use the ADW launcher 99.9% of the time. I can do most Android apps and still use Amazon Prime video as well.
Been solid as a rock since I loaded it.
ICS doesn't impress me.

Changing off that stock launcher!!

Okay so I ran across something interesting today. I got ambitious and tried to replace the current launcher.apk file in system/app with a go launcher all I got from the Internet. I renamed it to Launcher.apk and I changed permissions to rw- r-- r-- and renamed the stock Launcher.apk to Launcher.apk1 and rebooted.
The kindle restarted fine and the first unlock flickered but TADA!!! GO LAUNCHER APPEARED! I was super happy. DO NOT DELETE THE OLD LAUNCHER APK!!!!!!!!!!It's the only back up after all lol
But I've tested this with other launchers as well and they worked!
:good::good::highfive::highfive::victory::victory:
All I had to do was drop Nova Launcher into my /sdcard folder and install it from there. Then when glyph click home... it asks which to use for default. Select the launcher and click "use always" and I've been good to go ever since.

mattamous, I have not tried this on a unrooted Kindle. Most of the launchers are available through Google Play not Amazon App Store, so this is really the problem.
I do have the APK's on my machine and since these are free, there is no problem distributing them to you.
I will give you two choices (you may install both without conflict):
1) Go Launcher EX Download: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54456659/GO_Launcher_EX_3_19_1.apk
2) Go Launcher HD Download: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54456659/GO_Launcher_HD.apk
Once you download them, go ahead and Open them which will initiate an install. You do not need root to perform this task.
Next go into your Kindle Apps, you will see the new Icon, click on it to open the new launcher. Then click on your Kindle "Home" button, you will be asked which launcher you want to use by default. You may choose now and check the box or decide latter (leave the box unchecked) after you have tested the new launchers.
Wala, a new facelift. Enjoy!

Those didn't work on a unrooted 7.2.3, both apps don't show up in the app draw & "Open" is greyed out on initial install.
Seems only way is by rooting first.

Bummer, used to work on 7.2.2
This is how I got Go Launcher on my device. Although I blocked it from future updates. Glad I did!
Thank you for the feedback.
HM....i'm rooted on 7.2.3 and have Play store successfully installed. I've installed both apex and nova but I can not launch either. When I click the home button I don't get the usual option to set a launcher.
I'm going to look into it more but seems there's an issue here ...
Edit: solution requires a Titanium Backup Pro Key but it works. Simply install from the Play store normally. Open titanium backup (make sure you have root and Pro license) go to the Backup tab. Long press on the launcher you want to use. Convert the launcher to a system app. The default launcher dialog box will appear the next time you press the home button.

Did you move the installed launchers from /data/app to /system/app and reboot?
I did. I had to convert them to system apps for them to work. Not sure why since others haven't had to.
The tablet supports live wallpapers when in a custom launcher. Just push the attached file to /system/app and then fix the permissions.
It's Livewallpaperpicker.apk pulled from a CM9 build. If you don't trust my file then download a full CM9 build and grab it from the zip file in the same location. The google provided live wallpapers don't work (framwork stuff missing?) so I haven't included them.
Now, if we can get an app switcher button on the nav bar we'd be in business.

Bob, Works like a charm. Thanks!
The app switcher would be done through the build.prop file or ?

I belive the button can be enabled there but the meat of it is buried in the framework files or soemthing like that. Unfortunately Amazon has done something to the framework that causes the Recent App switcher to crash when it is called. It's going to take someone with some real skills to go in and mod/re-write that part of the framework. That's quite a bit outside the usefulness of my copypasta skillz.
If you want to see what I'm talking about you can add to your home screen a recent app switcher button under Apex Actions.

Yes, I see what you are talking about.
Rather than waste the time trying to redo proprietary framework, I think our energy is best spent on making a whole new custom ROM. Only time will tell.........
So I have an issue with Kindle Free Time and using a different launcher. I successfully installed Go Launcher EX, but after launching kindle free time it wants to revert back to the stock launcher. So I froze launcher.apk, but then free time doesn't even launch. Next step I renamed go launcher apk to launcher.apk to replace the stock launcher and free time still does not launch. If anyone has an idea for a resolution please let me know.
Sorry it took so long to reply. Yes my device is 7.2.3 and is rooted.
well i screwed up...
i put these instruction together with another set that said to change the name of the original launcher to "launcher.apk1" and then attempt to restart with the new nove or go launcher. well something went awry, and now my KFHD is stuck in boot loop.
any of you guys know how to get it back to normal? or if i can access it through my desktop to change the launcher name back to .apk?

You really should not have to change the stock Launcher.apk - this will not make a difference.
The main problem is that Kindle Free Time is built around the stock launcher and was not designed for any other launcher.
If you setup the default launcher to be your new launcher (by pressing the picture of a house), you can always go back to Go Launcher when you are done using Kindle Free Time.
Th latest kindle software update wouldn't let me just hit the house. I had t replace stock Launcher.apk with trebuchet or another launcher before I got the select default launcher menu
Edit: I renamed the stock Launcher.apk to Carousel.apk and I can use the home softkey to switch between launchers smoothly now. I'm on 8.1.4 rooted however

Not able to set default launcher 5.1.1??

On stock 5.1.1 rooted and unlocked. Everything was fine up until today, had toptv launcher set as default etc. Came to TV today and leanback is running..... OK fine so I try installing different launcher in hopes of being asked which launcher to use as default and no dice keeps just loading leanback launcher, tried halauncher, set as default within the program, reboot and still on leanback, I've also forced stop leanback and seems to just still run. What the helllol, any help appreciated thanks :/
** minute after posting found problem** there was an update to android TV launcher, uninstall updates for android TV launcher and good to go. Hope this helps out anyone else that runs into this crap lol
Can you explain how you fixed this problem in more detail, I am having the same issue, but I don't know how to downgrade the leanback launcher to fix the issue.

Did i miss an update? (Leeco Le S3 X626)

So i've been reading for a bit and apparently there was an update that added an app drawer to Leeco phones (someone correct me if i'm wrong) but i can't find the system update option on my phone at all and i've looked everywhere.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
EDIT: Did some additional searching and it seems i have a shop rom (i have google apps and no system update option and zero chinese bloatware).
So for anyone that comes across this thread, you can't update unless you go through update.zip.
That's bad. I just got this phone and I was suprised that I don't have the bloatware launcher, but Google Now. Also I can't find any system updater in options. Seems like I have the same thing, which is both a plus and minus. And do you have a problem with custom launchers? Google Now is a poop and when I installed Lawnchair, I couldn't remove the last app I opened from the multitasking. Specifically it appeared in one "window" with the launcher so I couldn't "kick it out". I got back to Google Now, but I hate it. Do you have the same problem?
(Lol, such a long post)
Haven't actually tried a different launcher, i hear Nova is good though, it might be worth it to try.

Sorry for such a late reply. Finally moved to a custom launcher (Microsoft Launcher) and it has the same issue with the last app staying open. So i make sure to always keep the dialer/contacts app open as it seems like the least performance/battery heavy app to keep running. Annoying, but way way better than the launcher the phone came with that didn't even have an app drawer.

Fire HD 10 7th Generation - Nova Launcher

I have a Fire HD 10 7th generation. My Fire OS says the build date is 11-12-18 running OS 5.3.6.4 (626533320), it also shows it checked for an update on 12-5-18. That seems odd to me because most everyone else including the tutorial video shows the OS as 5.6 and that was posted 1-2018. That doesn't make sense, an older system having a newer version of the OS even though mine checked for an update.
What I want to do is be able to run Nova Launcher as my default launcher. I have Google Play Store, ES Explorer & Nova Launcher installed. If I open Nova Launcher and go to the settings at the top it says it is not the default launcher, 'click here' to make it default. When I do that It takes me to the Fire Settings main menu. I can't anywhere within settings that allow me to do that. The only thing I have found the even mentions Nova Launcher is at the bottom of the Accessibility menu under Services it is listed and turned off, I turned it on.
It would be nice if I could disable Amazon for forcing updates as well but one step at a time.
Has what I wanted been done successfully with the same OS version? If so is there a tutorial? Is the LauncherHijackV3.apk & Launcher Hijack V4 outdated or is there a better way?

Unfortunately, as of now there is no way to disable OTA updates. Now the part about Nova. It seems that Amazon has locked down the tablets when it comes to changing launchers. For me the easiest way is indeed LauncherHijacker. Although its not the fastest method it definitely is very effective. Also, the accessiblity service for Nova doesn't have anything to do with the launcher being default, it just allows for gestures and taking the user to the recent apps screen, etc. Those were just my answers on the questions you had. I'm sorry if I couldn't answer your question to your satisfactory.

LauncherHijack BLOCKED
I know this is an old post, but I'm hoping someone will help me with this:
For me, the LauncherHijack had worked great at first! I was actually able to use Nova as the default launcher. Then I put the tablet aside and when I came back to it, a message popped up with something to the effect of "launcherhijack blocked." And now, I have reinstalled the LH twice and nothing. When I go to "Accessibility," at the bottom, it no longer lists that "home screen" option. It only shows "Nova Launcher: On" and I can use the Nova Launcher app, but it's still not my default launcher.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
