Back browser button? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

On task's new rom my back button won't work it only refreshes and certain links I touch won't work either please help.

go to etc directory and look at file "hosts" - if it's around 600K then this is your culprit.
this file is used to block ads, which will significantly increase your browser speed with side effect "back " button sometimes does not work.
you can rename that file to say hosts.Bak and after reboot you will have your back button along with all internet ads...

All messages> Back switches apps instead

I noticed a bug that allows you to switch to running apps that were left behind with the home button.
Prerequisites: HTC Messages widget on one of the main screens.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open an application (like 'people') and exit out with the home button, not the back button.
2. Repeat step one if you want to add other apps.
3. Go to the HTC messages widget and tap it to open a message.
4. Select menu option "All messages".
5. Press the 'back' button. This will switch to another app instead of close the messages.
6. Repeat step 5 to close the app and move to the next one.
Further notes:
Some apps will continue to show up even if you press 'back' on them to exit out.
For example, "People", "System settings" and browser never closes. Camera app does close, but you have to leave it by pressing 'home'.
Works on generic 1.5.

I didn't know that - it is not mentioned in the manual. Thanks for that useful tip. Looks like a useful shortcut back to where you were before.
But how do you close a programme rather than let it waste memory and battery in the background?

If android needs ram it will close apps as needed but you can always download a task manager from the marketplace, there are some good free ones, i suggest advanced task manager its what i use
It would be good to be able to actually get them to exit properly.
Especially so when you have 4 or 5 "All messages" apps that won't go.
The only use this bug has is to take you to apps that are actually running as opposed to your history.
It also takes you to screens that a task switcher can't do for you, like the last screen you see from your last phone call and the call history.

I don't see this as being a bug. The ability to be able to short cut to the 6 (I notice it is limited to 6) previously used apps by a long press on the home button is obviously something the designers have deliberately included. And to me it is a useful additional feature (now I have found it!).
It seems to be history rather than running apps you are looking at - I closed several of my running apps using Astro and yet they still subsequently appeared in the list.

Here are more complete instructions for those who need to have a picture drawn for them, like myself.
1. Download the file from the link given. Once downloaded, use a file mover to copy file to SD card and rename to update.zip
(I used Astro to long hold on the .zip file and select "MOVE", then it puts the file in "cut" mode, and will wait for you to find the SDCARD folder and then tap inside the folder and select "PASTE". Some have advised that you rename the file as well, to update.zip - be sure you don't name it update.zip.zip)
2. Shutdown Phone - hold the power button, select SHUT DOWN
3. Hold Down Power and Volume Down button
4. Wait for screen to to load up and it to do it's searching for file thing.
- at this point a screen will come up with three little Androids at the bottom and 4 options.
5. You need to use the volume button to rock down to RECOVERY. For those of you who don't read, like me.
6. Once you get to picture of phone with red exclamation mark hold Volume Up and then press Power.
7. At this point, I had a black screen with 4 options. I believe the actual text said "recover from update.zip"
8. Currently I am at this stage and the screen is black with bright yellow text starting with "--Install from sdcard...." then

Congratulations! Your phone has been updated successfully to version 3.26.651.3 (with my live wallpaper and time, date, carrier in the background until you click "OK") Once you click "OK" it will go to an HTC screen with a percentage in the center and once that finishes you get a little keyboard tutorial. I skipped it and now I have another "loading" screen. Slowly, all of my widgets and icons are loading on the home screen. I think I'm done!
I hope this helps some of you who are timid about updating - I know I am very intimidated by messing with my phone's system. I don't flash ROM's because I prefer to stick with my carrier's updates because of past issues with Palm, Windows Mobile and Blackberry. Android just seems to be easier in every single aspect, including this one, which is why I went ahead and gave it a try.

Worked like a champ. Looks good so far. Thanks.
[delete me]
Is this real? Reason I ask is b/c I thought it wasn't supposed to be out till next week.
Edit:
Did some Googling and found the manual update was just released today.
Edit again:
Sorry for the double-post. I accidently hit the back button while clicking "edit" and somehow created a new post. I'd appreciate it if a mod could remove the original post as it seems I cannot. (I'm not a n00b to forums in general XDA and the way it is setup.)

I gonna hold off for now. According to comments at PhanDroid, this "update" was pulled from HTC's site because it is not the final release version.
So hold off ?

Browser copy and paste help

Ok when I was running dk28 I was able to long press anywhere I wanted to and dragged and hit copy when I was done with whatever it was I was copying. Now that I went to di18 it seem very limited borderline useless long pressing don't work going into menu and hitting select text is pointless because the second I lift my finger it copies before I can finish scrolling down on the screen. I also tried the shift key and dragging method on the slide out keybord that was a waste too. So what gives. Is there an app that will make copy and paste easier in the browser running di18?
I could always go back to dk28 but I just can't stand that whole checkboard effect anymore

Stock internet browser not closing multi window tabs

First off, very impressed with the phone, but just trying to figure out this problem; did a bit of a search first and I couldn't find anything concrete so I wanted to see if you guys could replicate it or think of a fix.
When using the default internet browser, if I hit the button in the top right to open a new browser window, it will go into the "window manager" screen. From there if I hit the "add window" button in the top right with a plus sign, it won't do anything. The only way I can open new windows is if I use the menu button on the bottm left. Furthermore, if there are multi windows open and I try to close one, it will give me the "Unfortunately the internet has stopped" message. Same thing happens if I try to back out of the "window manager" screen.
Any thoughts?
dont use the default browser because its terrible
Yeah I figured I'd probably end up using Chrome anyways, just wondering if anybody else is having this problem or if it's a bigger issue with my phone.

Im experiencing the same problem when I try to close windows in the stock browser.
I have no solution for you but hope that by posting this it will draw the attention of someone who has a solution.
And yes, other browsers are probably better but I think ALL stock software should work flawless.

[Q] Opera Mobile vs. Dolphin and Landscape

I think I've tried every browser that will install on a rooted NT. I'm down to Opera Mobile (and Classic Mobile--are they the same but from different markets??) and Dolphin.
I like Opera because I can zoom and save my aging eyes a bit. I hate Opera because I prefer to browse in landscape mode and I have yet to find a rotation locking app that will keep Opera steady. It flips and flops, back and forth at unexpected times. And, of course, there is no setting in Opera for orientation. Right now I'm using Tasker to invoke first Wi-Fi and then the Rotation Locker plugin. It works almost always on opening and sometimes stays...but not always.
Is there something that will ALWAYS keep Opera Mobile in landscape?
I like Dolphin (although I once discarded it) because it CAN be locked into landscape and will STAY there. I love that I can set the lower hardware buttons to Volume control and Dolphin will scroll with them. Flash is sort of amusing (hooray I got it working!), but it's not a good reason to stay with Dolphin. I hate Dolphin because it has no way to zoom--except that it does, but only on its own terms. It automatically zooms when you need to do something like a form entry. In the Settings panel the admonition to show the zoom buttons is ignored. You can assign a gesture to Zoom. It will reproduce it and confirm that your scribble on the screen is a "match", but it ignores all gestures as far as I can tell.
Have I missed something with Dolphin? Is there a way to zoom on a screen?
Have I missed another browser that is actually working as "well" as these two?
[SOLVED ZOOM!] OMG! Dolphin does respond to gestures if you're not an idiot like me. Tapping the "dolphin" button in the bottom left corner gives three options. The middle one goes to a blank screen on which to draw a gesture and after you have done so, it returns to the current browser tab with the effect done! So you can program a "Z" or something for "zoom" and it WORKS!!!!!!!!! (so do all the other gestures, if you can remember that many)
Hey,
How did you manage to install flash plugin for dolphin? I though it only works with android 2.3+

I've had good luck with "rotation locker". You have to long press the middle landscpe mode button (which on my nst has no text) to keep Opera running in the background. It then forces Opera back into the landscape mode despite disturbing events

I can't take credit for this (original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555549), but I may be able to smooth out the edges that this noob found a little intimidating.
1. Follow the link given in the post linked above to download the "flashupdate_signed.zip" file. Ignore the rest of the stuff there.
2. Unzip that file. You will need the three Flash plugin apks in the /system/app folder. They go on your SD card for installation later.
3. You can also copy the three .so files in the /system/lib folder to your SD card (or dropbox, or use ADB, etc.) These will need to be placed in the /system/lib folder of the Nook so you need Root Browser or similar with SuperUser rights.
4. When you have moved the three .so files to /system/lib on the Nook check that their permissions are the same as other files in that folder. Mine were not and I had to change the permissions to match the other files.
5. Reboot
6. Install the three Flash apks.
Note, this shows up as Flash 10.1 in my ADW Manager but when I go to test it seems to be 9.x. It works some places and not others, but I find that's true of older Flash plugins anyway.
Don't forget that you have to enable Flash in the Settings for Dolphin as well.
I have just installed "rotation locker" on my NST, and it works just fine with both Opera Mobile and my PDF readers. Thank you! I assess it through a long-press of my top-left Nook Button, and can switch back and forth between portrait and landscape modes at whim.

I didn't understand this at first but I was able to set Tasker to use this background option of Rotation Locker just for the few apps (like Opera Mobile and Crosswords(US) that resisted locking into landscape. Works like a charm! Thanks for the tip
