Okay, so I downloaded the 2.3.3 update from the May 27 release here on these forums because I couldn't wait for T-mobile to release it officially. I did not root this phone and don't plan to. How do I download the 2.3.4 update without rooting?
Allow me to perform a google search for you Sir

I appreciate your googling for me, but many people say that the update would not work from leaked 2.3.3 update. I've done my share of research and wondering what would be the best way to go about with this.
Edit:
Forget it. I found it already.

Hello,
So everybody is bummed about not getting the 2.1 update from htc. And also for me waiting untill june is to long. So i've desided to root my Hero and instal the legend-ROM. So far it's clear.
I've done some reading before rooting, so I do not have a question about that. But some hing's are not that clear to me. SO if I root my Hero, i will loose the possibility to accept the OTA update. But is is possible to get the official update anyway, when it comes in June?
And will i lose my rooting indefinitely, or is it possible to get the rooting again after getting the official ROM?
These are the last thing i would like to know before rooting.
Thanks in advance!
You will be able to install the official Rom if not by OTA there will be an RUU on the HTC website.
If you install that you will lose root and chances are never be able to root again.
If you wait like 10 minutes or so after its release there will be pre-rooted version available on this website, so just install one of those.
Awsome! Fast and great reply.
Didn't think of that.
Everyone working on developing here are getting my thanks!
I wil start rooting my hero imidiately!
I'm sure this is somewhere on the forum but I've made a best effort searching/reading for the past hour, and am now more confused. I rooted my incredible a few weeks ago in order to get the tethering feature to work, and this was before the OTA update from VZN came along. everything works, no complaints.
Since 1) I did not get the OTA update, and 2) I eventually would like Froyo, I have a few questions:
1) Do I need the OTA update?
2) Will I need it in order to get VZN's Froyo update whenever that becomes available?
3) If so, should I wait until that announcement is made?
4) If I unroot and get the OTA, can I simply re-root in order to get the tethering feature back?
5) Would I be able re-root by following the same instructions as when I rooted the first time (unrevoked3)?
6) If I unroot/install OTA update/re-root, how do I get VZN's Froyo when it is released? I assume I would need to un-root again, and then wait for the update?
7) Am I just as well off unrooting/installing OTA update/re-rooting and getting an unofficial version of Froyo? I am in no rush for froyo and do not want to risk messing up the phone for it.
I assume some of these questions are answered on the forums but like I said, the instructions I found on various threads seemed incomplete. Would greatly appreciate answers/links to answers for any of the questions.
Thanks
if your happy with the way the your phone is right now than just wait till the official update comes out.
You'll likely be told the update is available on your phone, but if you want root, you won't want to apply that right away.
Hopefully some magic like Evo update is done for us... the Evo update has already been rooted and pulled apart.
Thanks binny and k_flan... So I'll just wait for VZN. Can I install the VZN update (Froyo) directly or would I have to un-root first? No way to know this I suppose, but will the VZN Froyo allow wireless tether or will I have to pay extra for the feature?
My plan
My plan at this point is to wait for the OTA and then for unrEVOked to see if they can root it. If they can, I will RUU back to a stock rom, and apply the official update. This will guarantee [1] VZW to handle if I brick, and [2] that I am running the real radio and the real 2.2 (instead of the buggy beta which is making the rounds).
If they can't then the decision gets harder. I suspect that my desire for the 2.2 will outweigh my need to still be rooted.
What I know i WONT do is jump through these hoops just to install a beta radio/OS combo. If the radio wasn't at issue, it would be a different story.
np OP. You won't want to install the VZW update, it will likely not work with unrevoked's reflash tool.
I also have to correct what I said earlier, it doesn't appear it is the final build that was rooted for the Evo, but the radio was pulled from the final build and used with a rom.... Either way, it seems they've got the official radio (at least, that's how it looks for now), hopefully that happens for us, and official radio img.
Fair enough. still getting up to speed on terminology.... i assume reflash means un-root - is there any way to reset the phone to be able to get the VZ update/froyo?
This is obviously a noob question. I have rooted my vibrant and wonder what happens when Samsung releases 2.1 fixes or better yet when Froyo comes out. Will this process rewrite the ROM and re-rooting will be necessary again ? will this be an automatic download?
as long as you are using the original rom you should be notified for the upgrade. im sure you will have to re root after the upgrade. When they release it, read the forums first about losing root or not.
Not to mention people with rooted phone usually get the fixes/patches/updates before they are released by t-mobile. The modding community is way better than waiting on the official release from the cell phone provider. So you might there is a good chance you will receive updates faster by having a rooted phone.
I've moved this thread to the general section.
I just recently picked up a dell streak. It's brand new with what I'm guessing it the latest shipped rom which is build number 15274 running android version 2.2.2
All I see is custom roms and reflashing back to other roms to root....blah blah blah...is there a way to just root my current rom and not have to flash a completely new one? I'm all for supporting the community, I'd just like to keep this as device as clean as possible and remove all the bloatware.

Download SuperOneClick v1.5.5 and root away. Dont forget to put your phone into USB debugging mode before rooting, its very important that you do that. Or just follow the steps in this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925853 good luck.
Wow thanks, I totally skipped over that post!!! I guess from what I was reading I was expecting the whole process to be a lot more complicated.
Thanks a ton!
Anytime.

How come Dell don't push out the 2.2.2 version OTA to their customers?
I check for updates every day, but have just once received any. (2.2)
Their way of saying; "we just don't give a f*ck about our customers"?
You should have gotten that update weeks ago. It's been OTA for probably about a month now. And I don't know how much you've read, but a lot of what happened with not updating from 1.6 was probably AT&T's fault because they wouldn't okay the build (speculated). Dell had the source up for 2.2 for a long time, if I remember correctly.
I'm on unlocked stock EU ROM since day one. Just to clarify.
Do you mean the 2.2.2 was shipped OTA, for EU users too?
Ohhh. Didn't notice you were on EU. I don't know if Dell released one for EU yet (probably hasn't since you don't have the option to OTA). Just remember that it's not just the phone maker responsible for updates, the carrier has some say in it, too. Are you still on 1.6? Because you could always try out DJ Steve's ROM if you wanted to try something different.
No, the one OTA update I received, was the 1.6 --> 2.2 on last October.
Since then - nothing. I guess it's only in America people get the 2.2.2.
Thanx for taking time to reply.
No problem, haha. I hope you get it soon
I really want the update to, I'm in the Uk and I'm still on 2.2, I would do it myself but its just to complicated and don't wanna mess up my phone. Has anyone in the Uk got the 2.2.2 upgrade? And to be honest I really wont the 2.3 upgrade, but seeing as we still don't have the 2.2.2 upgrade, I think we'll be waiting a long time :'(
2.2.2?
If someone updated from 1.6, to the "non official" 2.2, is there any difference between it and 2.2.2?
2.2.2 is supposedly immune to the malware loaded from the 50 or so infested apps that Google removed recently from the market.
This may be a known issue but my wife's (non-rooted, completely stock) A500 has been getting a 4.0 OTA notification since yesterday. It says it's invalid, after downloading it, so I ASSUME it's not actually for this device but is that the case? If it is for the A500, do I need to do a factory reset to get it to update?
Thanks, and Merry Christmas!
What version is it running currently? 7.014.02
I have not seen anything since the 7.014.01/02 releases a few days back.
It would be nice to see Acer taking the lead on releases but I will believe it when it happens. The. 02 release did have a new to me update screen when it installed....
Wowsher
I think I know what one of the issues is- This must have been some really old stock (bestbuy.com) because it's running 3.0.1 and the kernal version is 26.36.3-00001-g9b3ce2b. Is it possible that it's somehow "skipping" the OTA updates in the correct order (or maybe they aren't available OTA anymore?) and thus giving me the "invalid" message?
yep would not surprise me at all... you should be able to download from a thread in the rom area a thread by vache has links to almost all of them.
You should probably change the thread title if you can.
Wowsher
There have been others with similar issues.Seems like acer did not and is not pushing the updates to some devices.
I would first call acer if you. Not likely to help but would atleast let them know they have issue.
For a right now fix.
Get iconiaroot. Root tablet.
Get acer recovery installer. Install custom recovery.
Look on forums for a stock 3.1 or 3.2 rom.
You can get a ore rooted rom if you wish but would kill all updates in future.
There are lots of information in the dev forums on step by step instructions and downloads.
Be careful fallow instructions.
Good luck.
The 4.0.xxxx update, is an update for UI. It should come in 2 notifications for stock tablets.
The first, is a preparatory update. The second, is the actual update.
Note, if you have a rooted tab, as some people can tell, it is not advisable to take any OTA update from acer.
In the forum, if you want to take the update, there is a thread which has rooted versions of these updates.
