[Q] GPS or serial data on NT - Nook Touch General

Any ideas on how I can get GPS data on my rooted NT? It would be great due to screen visible in daylight for a specific application.
Or, I can output serial data from a standalone GPS device like my Garmin but how could I get that data into the touch?
Also, I am willing to paypal someone who can get this done! Yes, I'm desperate haha.
Note: I should say besides tetheringGPS which doesn't get an address so doesn't work. Also my cell (samsung moment) is rooted but GPS sucks for that phone. Also, I can get serial data from an arduino as well. Thanks

HTC Touch Vogue and GPS

Hello, just need something things cleared up, I have unlocked my phone by cooking custom rom and enabling GPS capabilities for this phone. I have spent a week or so learning how to mod different things like SPB, S2U2, icontacts, etc.... I traveled to Montreal from Toronto using the GPS pay services, $8 a month, which is reasonable, but I was wondering if it possible to use the GPS capabilities for free. I know when you go buy a GPS unit, you dont have to pay for the service, only if you want to update your maps. Is there some registry hack or software that will enable this for free. Please let me know and point me in the right direction if possible, thanks everyone.
gps free with unlimited date plan
if you have an unlimited data plan ,(im with telus),like if you wanto get internet ,tv or anything else. your gps connection gona be free. for the htc touch vogue with the news telus rom its so easy to get gps working with a simple modification with Qpst and a registry hack.
HTC Mogul
DCD 3.2.2 RADIO 3.42.30
gps working-ip phone- wifi and bluetooth internet router working to
ive download almost 5gig each month and no cost for that
27.85 meg at boot and 23.75 with 6-8 program like google map running
HTC Vogue
New telus radio rom wm6.1
Gps working with registry hack and qpst modification
ip phone and bluetooth router for internet working ( no wifi enabled)
this phone just have so much memory that everything working stable with so less hacking on it
HTC Libra
New telus radio rom wm6.1
ip-phone with internet by bluetooth pan and diamond tv working by bluetooth
****ing smartphone so hard to hack or build a kitchen for it
Original poster was asking whether it was free to acquire GPS through satellite rather than through a data connection.
I have an Elf so I don't know the answer, but the Vogue has a GPS chip in it so I'm assuming it can communicate with satellites. If you have the newer ROMs then it should have GPS enabled in the operating system.

did you know that your phone doesnt communicate with satellite gps but its making a triangular equation with his cellular satellite. I'm working on getting a gps lock without having any contract. And getting a free internet connection at the same time if youre able to get a gps lock you have internet acces because they came from the same source.
Thanks
Hey guys thanks alot for your replies, I think I have a better grasp on what you all are saying. So, I have enabled the GPS capabilities on my phone through the ROM. Now I have a icon in programs menu that says GPSNav. When I go to that application it gives me 2 options, 3.50 a day and 8.00 a month. From what I understand GPS on these phones are done through a data connection meaning the internet, not through locking onto an actual satellite like those dedicated GPS devices. I do have an unlimited data plan right now. So, is it because I'm running this particular program that I have to pay? Or is there another program I can either use through one time purchase or I can find on the net somewhere that I can install and get GPS for free through using my unlimited data plan (triangulation). If there is an app out there, whats the name? Thank again!

Hmm... I thought the GPS capability of these newer phones was equivalent to the functionality of using separate Bluetooth GPS receiver. Thus no need to buy the receiver anymore.
Correct me if I am wrong, because this was one of my reasons for wanting to buy a Touch Diamond or the Touch 3G.
gps without any plan
i dont know for the touch diamond or the touch 3g because the telus interface is cdma not gsm. but if you want to get an gps connection without being charged for it. its shure that if you have to open an app that charged you for using the gps its because first- that you've not flash a custom rom or simply with the new htc rom wm6.1 you can just modify your Qpst and with a little registry hack you can get a fully free of charged gps using. but you will need to install a gps sorftware that already have all the map in it. or if you have and unlimited data plan get google map and youll never be charged for using the gps chipset enabled.
For now I've almost get a gps lock with my HTC libra without any plan at all, its seeking for satellite but not able to lock on 1. im trying to get a pass trough the cellular tower to get a data unlimited to for free with cloning and some little other hack. ill see if its working.
gps and internet working without any plan.... to much
the gps connection working with a 8 second locking time and 10 gps satellite locking on. with the new rom wm6.1 from telus i've found that there is many thing that make it so funny and easy to hack and make everything working. now i've found how to make the internet connection working.
google maps working
9-10 gps satellites lock on
8 second delay for locking satellite
satellite view working because of the internet hack ..... so hot
internet
download bitrate of 1200 kbps
Now the question is how long all this will stay working.
all of this working because off all the time i've put on this. reading and trying modification in registry, modification in the epst with ##778 and the getspc, changing values in qpst for enabling the gps chipset and dont forgot to change your spc if you dont want telus to get in and see what you have done in it. the key to get all off this working will stay secret for a week minimum because ill see if after a week everything will stay alive maybe ill tell somebody who will pay for it. but after making the impossible-possible the secret key to that is.....lol

I'm not fully understanding what you're saying. But... to help others out you are making them pay for it? On this site?
My initial point about the GPS chip was not to imply CDMA or GSM. It should have nothing to do with either. I'm talking about direct satellite tracking (like with a bluetooth receiver) not tracking through cellular network. Maybe someone else can enlighten us on this.
im not telling to ask other to pay for my help but for the key to acces the network without any data plan and get full free access to gps. about your idea to get an outside gps connect with your device, for me its an crazy idea because youre gona pay for a gps device that is already in your htc device and that you can get full use of it without being charged for it.
the way i've found to connect to the network is pretty easy after all but that take me so much hours to found this hack that im not gona give it to a nobody(french term)
when youre talking about direct satellite its your choice but about me im not working on that because ive no interest in that.
Now next step is to get a free access to the cellular tower and get access to make phone call without having a plan with a company

My Elfin doesn't have a GPS device built in. that is why I have to use Bluetooth to connect to my separate GPS receiver. That is what most people do.
2nd day off free internet access
day 2, the internet connection still alive.
-I think that yesterday about 3hrs after i got access they try to deconnect me . Because i've been deconnected and they send me and msg that ive not permission to acces the network. but after soft-reset everything get back on and nothing else apen after that everything going good.
-Now can somebody now if its possible to make a roundup connections with cell tower. is it possible to activate the option of making the request activation after the connection begin like the 10 min registry hack activation delay for the btpan in dcd rom
sorry for my poor english im from Quebec, Canada.
mabe if something possible I'll be interested in develloping and creating a kind off ghost phone project with the help off every one who know something about that
thanks
I have an Elfin myself, so I don't know how the Vogue works...
But from what I've read, the Vogue has a built-in GPS chip. This is not to be confused with aGPS (Assisted GPS), which uses the cell towers to triangulate your position; it's not as accurate as true GPS but it gives you a good idea. I'm not sure if aGPS costs you money, I would assume it does as it needs to use the internet (Google maps uses an aGPS style positioning).
Where as true GPS uses a chip to pick up on the 24 GPS satellites or so, orbiting the earth right now. The chip is designed to get a satellite lock, and the satellites help triangulate your position to a more accurate position. Well, more satellites/cell towers = better accuracy. Therfore consider 24 satellites, or 3 or 4 cell towers. Obviously true GPS works better.
So from what I understand, you just unlock the GPS (which I believe is true GPS), then I would download Garmin XT for windows mobile and use that. You will have to download or buy the map sets, load those onto an SD card in your phone. Then you can use Garmin XT (with pre-installed maps), combined with the internal GPS chip - it should work just fine, and will not use the internet.
I have been using Garmin XT on my Elfin, with a bluetooth GPS and it works great. I have never used a data plan either.
Now, I just wonder what chip the Vogue is using for it's GPS - it must be some kind of SiRF chip... Maybe someone can tell us, then we will know the exact type of GPS it uses.
Try out Garmin XT and let us know.
hey guys..
i have an HTC Vogue..
i was wondering..

Hey guys, XV6900 newb here trying to enable GPS...

I have been reading around and talking to friends about the Touch phone, and could use a little more assistance on enabling the GPS in my phone. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Robbie
have you upgraded to windows mobile 6.1??
if so, then go to start > settings > Phone > Services tab > make sure location setting is highlighted, click get settings >then make sure it is set to on.
that will make sure that applications are allowed to use your gps signal.
then once you have done that,
open your gps, if you use google maps you have to click menu, use gps.
I have upgraded to the official verizion 6.1 rom. My question is, does gps use data? Is the gps a real gps that connects to satellites or is it some pseudo gps that approximates my location by triangulating distances between my phone and the nearest couple cell towers? I don't have a data plan and don't want an unpleasant suprise on my next bill.

Yes, the Vogue has a real GPS antena. If you read through the forums you'll find verizon users have to do a bit of tweaking to get it working.
It can be confusing, because our phones also support "agps". This stands for assisted gps. AGPS uses cell phone tower triangulation to get a position.
GPS has inherent errors, in the aviation world there is a system called diffrential GPS. This uses a ground based system to correct the time diffrential error in the sattelites for greater accuracy. Without dgps you cannot use the gps inputs for a precision approach, only enroute, terminal and overlay. We use other systems such as vor/dme. This uses ground based "towers" to get a position using radial and distance information. This is very similiar to what agps does.
to answer the question does it use data?
the answer is yes.
it has to have a data connection in order to receive the gps data.
atleast thats my understanding, as a data connection does start and maintain during my gps sessions.

No it shouldn't. The data connection you're seeing is probably initiated by the application that needs the internet for transferring maps like Google maps or MS Live search.
If you load up any independent GPS app that uses locally stored maps like TomTom or Garmin, then it shouldn't initiate any data connections.
thanks method man for correcting me.
i didn't think about it that way. haha.
Also a Newbie
I was wondering whether there was an app that I would need to install on my xv6900 to get the GPS working or do i need an external device like the TomTom Go series to get the GPS up and running.
Any help is much appreciated.

The reason it dont work is because GPS tries to connect one way, i belive its phone as modem. and when you browse the internet, it tries to connect as Sprint PCS.
now i might be wrong in that, but just lisen.
in order to fix it you need to do a registry change. get a free program to edit the registry. like PHM RegEdit.
got it downloaded? installed? good. lets move on.
open it up
click on My Device
+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+Comm
+ConnMgr
+Providers
+{7C4B7A38-somethingsomethingsomething}
+Phone as Modem.
go into that setting, make sure that the key AlwaysOn is set to 0
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART
go down a setting from phone as modem to
+SprintPCS
the key inside doesnt have to be set to Always On, but you can enable it if you want.
now close it up. count to 20 and do a restart on the phone
next time you try to run any GPS app it should work. use GoogleMaps though.
also while you are in here you can go into ConnectionSharing. a key above ConnMgr. and make it so you can use your phone as a modem for your laptop. the option was removed in the 6.1 update. let me know if you wish to know how.

I called Verizon regarding the WM 6.1 upgrade and they told me to go to Microsoft's website and download it. Microsoft says go to the carrier's website. I'm confused. I'm using a Verizon XV6900 running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Are we talking the same thing? Is there a newer version (6.1) than 6 Professional? If so, where can I get it?
Also, I've read about enabling the internal GPS antenna, which appeals to me, but there is so much info with different instructions, talking about Sprint and Alltel, radios, etc. Is there a good (read: easy) set of instructions for this? Also, a list of the possible problems encountered (function, data loss, etc.)? I don't want to be a pain in the rear, but this is not my specialty. But I could really use the GPS capability with my work (real estate) w/o needing an exterior unit. I currently use a DeLorme bluetooth unit, but its a pain.
Thanks in advance, Jim.

Here is the link to the offical WM6.1 ROM
http://www.pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=95&cid=1&mid=302&carrier=Verizon Wireless
1. sync your phone with Outlook. You will loose everything on your phone when you flash the new ROM. Files on your memory card will be safe.
2. Unlock your phone with 2.31 & refer to the links below.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
http://www.atwistedweb.com/xv6900/index.html
3. connect your phone to your computer via activesync & run the ROM file you download. Simply follow the instructions.
4. Your phone will hard reset once the flash is complete. You will have to align the screen & such. The very last screen will ask you to tap the screen to begin using your device. You have to be ready to soft reset your phone as soon as you tap the screen. DO NOT LET THE CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN OR YOU WILL BE SCREWED FOR SURE.
5.Settings--->Phone--->Services Tab select location settings & then hit the get settings button. Make sure Location On is selected.
6. Download the Holus GPS viewer & install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=434408&highlight=holux+gps+viewer
post #3
7. Once the GPS viewer open hit the scan button. This will tell you what port & at what baud you GPS is at. It should be com 4 @ 4800.
8. Hit the open GPS button & hopefully you will get a lock.
phone keeps scanning for satellites
Is this normal? The GPS program ran and continues to search for satellites. Its alomst like it can't find any. I ran it just the way you listed. Anything else I can try?
If you are using Holux GPS viewer and you see red dots then be happy your GPS is working. Usually first lock takes longer. try it on an open place hopefully you will get a lock. The red dots you see on Holux are the satellites that your GPS is seeing, Once it gets a lock you will see blue dots and that's a fix. If it continues to flash red dots, I would try closing and opening port once, that wud restart the GPS.
Once you get a lock, use any 3rd party software like Garmin Mobile XT or Tomtom Navigator 7 if you don't have a data plan. If you have a dataplan then you can use goolemaps too.
Hope it helps..

No that isn't true at all,
I have both Tomtom and Igo with map files on the sd card. The phone needs the internet to get the agps information otherwise the GPS programs can't get a lock. It doesn't use much adata at all as I was roaming in the states (from canada) for around 10 days , I used the gps everyday and was only charged under $3 for the whole 10 days.

Here is the update you are looking for, now.... For the love of the lord, DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATION RUN!!!
Update your device as directed in the file, when the device updates and restarts, you will see a message that says something like "Running Customization in... 3,2,1 Seconds" or something like that, when you see that, stick the stylus in the hole at the bottom of the device and you will avoid a big pain in the @ss.
EDIT: Oops, i'm too late LOL, didn't refresh thepage while searching the update.
Can't get a lock
I just followed all the steps and installed GPS viewer and could not get a lock. I used the Verizon MR1 rom. Since that did not work I tried installing Valhalla GPS Server to see if that would help. No luck. Any Ideas?

I have data blocked on my phone and the GPS worked fine up until about a month ago. Whatever Verizon did blocked my GPS and I have not been able to get is working since. I can still run GPS viewer and see satellites but I can't get a fix on them.
I have everything working now. Thanks.
Just so I have it straight...
When I unlock the phone with 2.31, do I let customizations run? The ppcgeeks thread doesn't specify, but the atwistedweb thread says let them run. What does 2.31 do? Just unlock the phone so I can install the next ROM? Also, the ppc post talks about disabling USB while the other does not. Is there a preference?
When I install the new WM6.1 ROM, the atwistedweb post says to install it from the SD card, while the this thread says via USB. Once again, any preference?
I understand not to let the customizations run for this ROM and by putting the stylus in the bottom hole it resets the machine. After it comes up again, will the phone be (should be) upgraded and ready to use?
Lastly, if my phone gets "bricked" (I guess that means it turns into a battery powered paperweight), you guy can help me out, right?
Man, all of this just to get GPS and Verizon service. Still nervous! And Verizon won't shut my service off or stop tech support?
Thanks again. Trying to get all the info up front so I don't have to later. Jim

Make sure you have backed up everything. First you need to unlock with the .40 unlocker. Then flash to the sprint pre-GPS ROM (This will downgrade your radio which is said to be dangerous but I have never heard of anyone hurting their phone while doing it correctly. This will also require you to call Verizon and get a new A-key. If they ask you what happened just tell them that you had to hard reset your device because of a bad program. Go through all of their steps and it will all get fixed. You have to call Verizon because you wont be able to make calls.) DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! You'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). As soon as you see that pop up stick your stylus in the reset hole. Then unlock with the 2.31 unlocker. After you use this unlocker you wont have to unlock again. Ok now you flash back to the Verizon MR1 ROM. DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! Once again you'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). Now after you do this your GPS should be working but I was never able to get it to work with the Verizon MR1 ROM. So I recommend using NSFFAN's 6.5 ROM. Now when I unlock and flash ROM's I don't disable the USB thing your talking about. I also flash everything through my computer (USB) and not through the SD card. There is a small chance you can brick your phone but if you do everything carefully and correctly it's a very very small chance. Just make sure you are doing everything right before moving on to each next step. If a phone is bricked I don't think it can be recovered but i'm not 100% sure. Lots of times when there are problems though it's not a bricked phone and just a glitch so if you have anything that doesn't seem right just come on here and ask for help. Verizon won't do anything with your service except fix your phone like I said earlier unless you tell them what your actually doing. I don't know what happens then and I don't want to find out.. What they don't know won't hurt them Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need any help.

GPS

Hey guys, can someone confirm that when using the GPS function it does or does not use data plan? I know some phones such as the iPhone and Blackberry uses data for GPS, and I know the Touch HD is not required as it has the GPS receiver in the device. If someone can confirm this that would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hi!
No the phone has built in GPS Receiver
Awesome, I'm glad that they don't use data for the GPS function, that would be such a killer on data. Thanks for clarifying.
A GPS by definition must not use data. There are other methods of determining location besides GPS, but they are definitely not called GPS. Note that your device, though equipped with a GPS can ALSO use the cell network for finding its location.
So in the case of the iPhone 3g, what would you call that? My dad uses his "GPS" quite a bit but of course uses the data to download the maps. I'm assuming that the HTC Magic has the maps downloaded on the phone already therefore not needing data. Also when the cellphone uses the cell network to triangulate your position, that is not using data correct? I appreciate all the responses and clarification.
Thanks!
I have no knowledge or interest in apple junk.
However, you seem to be confusing the GPS with *what you do with* the data from the GPS. In your example, to me it sounds like it probably has a normal GPS that does NOT use data. GPS does NOT provide maps, pictures, or anything of the sort. GPS provides locational information by comparing the signals from several satellites to generate information like latitude, longitude, altitude, and bearing. This is all a bunch of numbers that the typical user won't be able to make much use of, so along with the GPS itself, you have some program that *does something* with the data. If you use google maps, then your phone will pull appropriate information from google's servers based on the information retrieved from the GPS. Another program that you could use, for example, is "gps status" (available on the market, use "gps status 2" for android 1.5 equipped devices), this will display the GPS information (and accelerometer) withOUT the maps/pictures/etc., and thus will NOT use any data from your data plan.
Regarding the cell tower location method... it doesn't use any data plan data, however, that does not mean that it is free.... check with your provider for specifics. Generally, cell tower location is crude whereas GPS is fine.
Does that help to clarify things?
Yes it does, thanks for your reply.
Other questions... CAn I use GPS software without Internet connection? Or I need all time internet to magic downlaod maps and info? It is any program Tomtom style for android? Thanks.
if someone has, or does release an application that contains its own map tiles, it will be entirely free to use, but will probably cost a fair amount to buy (the map tiles don't come cheap to the developers). Also I would expect such an app to be fairly large, and (if it does even fit) would eat up most or all of the 512 MB you can store your software in.
thinking about it, they could always give you an sd card with the maps and only have a fairly small app in the phone memory. although that's another matter
As long as an app uses google maps (or other online map resources), it will cost you data to use it.

GPS and other settings

I have a blackstone and it was originally on the Orange network (UK) I now have it unlocked from orange and have a T-mobile uk sim in there.
I put tomtom sat nav on and havent done much else to it.
For some reason I cant use the tomtom app as it says no gps device, any idea whats going on, or how I fix this. I follew the tom tom installation correctly but it just doesnt pick up any satellites up.
Another thing is my MMS setting are out of wack completely, any idea how I get these fixed, t mobile are unable to help as they dont sell the phone through them.
Anyone got their mms worksing through t mobile uk?
any help would be appreciated
Yes..you have find a big bug in the new rom that you have installed...i think that you have burn the GPS antenna, or the second possibility is that you have to install a new Antenna software..i've a original rom and all is perfect.!!
i havent installed another rom, its the original one that was on the phone, so i couldnt have burnt anything out. i haveng modded the phone in any way just to confirm
I'd try this for the MMS settings:
Tmobile Settings by Email
For the TomTom problem, it is just a case of TomTom not displaying any Satellites, but still getting your location (the screen changes colour and shows your location, to indicate a satellite lock) or does it never give a fix.
Not to insult as I don't know your level of experience with GPS, but try it outside on a clear (not very heavy cloud) day, leaving it stationary for several (upto five I'd say) minutes, and see if it gets a fix?
thansk for the reply,
but the t-mobile link odesnt work as my phone isnt listed there and I cant move forward without selecting one.
The tom tom screen is grey as if it doesnt have any satellites connected to it, I have tried it on a clear day and same no luck.
In the connections tab under where you can switch the bluetooth, wifi etc on, does the data connection also have to be switched on, of is the data connection for something else?
For tomtom:
Go to settings/AGPS settings and make sure it is turned off - this used to stop tomtom working for me until I updated my ROM.
In tomtom, make sure you've selected 'Other NMEA GPS receiver' and COM4 (I found the baud rate does not matter and have it set to the highest value.
thanks all working now, great.
just on a general note, what costs are incurred when we use this, is it free for people with data plans etc

GPS does not cost anything as you are receiving signals from GPS satellites. I don't think you even need a SIM in your phone to use it.
AGPS is data so will come out of your data plan if you have one.

Have you tic the box in the GPS tab (see in the settings) for give the permission to the O.S for taking automatically the control of signal.?

[Q] How to use GPS with no internet connection?

Hi, What do I need for my blackstone in order to use any (suggestions, which is better, would be a great help) GPS sowtware without internet connection. I am not an expert in this, but I know that GPS devices (like tom tom or similar) use satellite data to show coordinates. How can this be done on my touch hd? As only preinstalled program is google maps that require internet connection.
I don't have unlimited data plan, so this is extremely expensive for me, but I am a fan of geocatching, so I need GPS.
Please help me with description of how this GPS works and what soft should I use?
Thanks
There are lots of good Navigation/GPS Apps around that read standalone maps from your SDCard.
Take your pick.

Hi, thank for the info, but....
I installed TT7 with my region maps, but I still seem not to receive any GPS signal - my phone seems not to catch any satellite signal - is this a setting issue?
in tomtom7, just access the gps settings and set them to "internal gps receiver", then it should work immediately, given that in your very location you have gps coverage.
I've found that my Touch HD's GPS capabilities work great when I'm at home testing them, then fails to locate any satellites when I'm lost! lol
Not exactly true - but has got me before!
I would suggest that you try your GPS in various locations just to make sure that the building you live / work in, or the weather isn't blocking the signal that your phones GPS listens for...
I used TomTom for ages without issue, it can be copied directly from a memory card on a TomTom compatible device usually.
Recently my Dad bought iGo8 with the entire world maps installed, so I pinched that and run it straight off my storage card with just a few teething problems. This is the best GPS / SatNav on my phone so far...
+1 for iGO8
Best GPS software by far for me. This is the only and single reason why I haven't bought an Android phone yet.
If they would have created the same skinable thing for a HTC Desire etc the HD would be history.
If I were you.
1) disable a-gps, causes roaming costs and most gps application freak out on it (download advanced config tool and disable it that way)
Lock, no lock, lock, ... mostly caused by agps (assisted-gps). Assisted means that it also gets data from the cell-tower which abroad can cost you loads of money (and yes I had that once)
If you use HTC quick gps you will probably get a lock in seconds if you are outside so no need for assisted.
2) install the gps mod driver , this one 'thinks' ahead by calculating points that it gets from the GPS receiver. If you don't feel confident about this one skip it but read the thread and keep it in the back of your head.
3) buy iGO8 and install the gurjon skin which makes iGO look fantastic and makes it fully configurable the way you want it.
4) enjoy a fantastic GPS system
