I've tried just about everything I can think of to get wifi working on my phone, and I just can't get it to be reliable. I turn on wifi, it "turns on", but doesn't do anything at all (and sometimes will ask to force quit). I turn it off, and on again, and this time it finds networks, but does nothing other than searches for networks. I turn it off, and on again, and this time it connects, but then drops a full signal network in a matter of minutes.
The extent that I've gone to sort this out is re-downloading the 10/22 release (I've done this twice now), flash the new download (3 times over just to make damn sure it's in there), and checked wifi before applying anything else. No matter what I do, I can't get it to stay connected for more than a few minutes, and I can only after going through the entire process above.
Is there some fix that the search function of this site can't seem to find for me?
By the way, wifi has worked perfectly fine on other ROMs, and I've flashed back to stock to make sure during this whole process. There's nothing wrong with the hardware.

CM 7 thread for the Epic
I haven't used this rom, so I can't be of much help other than sharing the above from the OP of that thread.
Which modem are you using with it? I had CM7 installed a couple of weeks ago with the EH17 modem and wifi worked fairly well. I'm by no means an expert on this stuff though so maybe the modem doesn't even have anything to do with the issue.
Nikon is right on the money. Be sure to carefully read the OP notes to any ROMs you try out, especially if they are test builds, alphas, betas, RCs, etc. Pay special attention to the "Changelog" and "Buglist" sections, especially when you're having issues.
The WiFi instability is a very well known bug and not only is it listed in the Buglist of the CM7 OP, it's discussed and brought up repeatedly in the CM7 Topic. Currently there are no perfect fixes or workarounds, though some people say that it stabilizes if you go into the [Advanced] menu and set the Sleep Policy to "Never." As a user of CM7, I haven't found anything to work particularly well, you just have to repeatedly toggle it on/off/on/off until it temporarily stabilizes.
Decad3nce recently posted about some WiFi updates they've made, but I'm not sure if it fixes the majority of the stability issues or not.
Read the CM7 thread, or at least check the OP every so often! You'll stay much better informed.
EDIT: While the modem may be related, that is not the root of the issue. Many folks have tried different modems and there are still WiFi issues. If a certain modem cured the problem we would have heard of it by now.
my wifi is pretty stable on cm7 and i have been running the rom from three works...i always turn on the wifi from wifi settings (not the powerwidgets or status bar, it seems to scan forever when you do that)..and also turn it from the wifi settings..and it works flawlessly for me when i need it (i used it from some videos for an hour or so and it didn't drop once)..
p.s. settings>wireless & networks > Wi-Fi settings (not Wi-fi) and turn it on from there..

I like many followed the instructions on the Leaked 2.2 to install Froyo.
I performing the rooted instructions requiring me to upgrade to Baseband version and verify that it's 2.05.00.06.11. This went fine and I successfully installed 2.2.
I noticed that I was having real connectivity issues. My bars would drop and connection would seem to cease. I often went from 3g to 1x connectivity and my apps could not connect without a reboot.
I reverted back to 2.1 but it kept the same baseband version 2.05.00.06.11.
I am still having the same connectivity issues.
So far I have seen people suggest dialing *288 to update the towers but that didnt work.
Other say toggling airplane mode fixed it for them. This is not a consistent fix for me.
Please add information here so we can try and find a fix.
I updated mine to the leaked 2.2 yesterday and I did lose my 3G for a few hours. I started to troubleshoot afterwards and toggling airplane mode would restore my 3g connectivity. I haven't noticed anything else that is troublesome so far, however, I am also missing some apps in the market.

There is a fix for the market problem -
I am trying to keep this thread about the connectivity issues. I suspect the firmware update did something bad. I am not running any roms or updates.
I'll have to try toggling airplane mode, I haven't tried that.
Yeah, I'm having issues too, also video recording has stopped working.

Not real sure if this is the same problem or not, but i'll post it here and we'll see. My phone seemed to have ZERO issues yesterday after the move to 2.2. Everything was working great (related to connections)
This morning, my alarm (on the phone) went off at 6:15am and I swiped it and got up, went and took a shower. While I was coming out I heard "Droid..." and was like, well that sux, a random reboot. A couple minutes later I came over to it and it was on the lock screen and the screen was dim like it was about to turn back off. I touched it to swipe and it was locked up and rebooted a second or so later.
Each time it came up, I had an X next to my signal meter and no WIFI or Data indicators. The process "system" kept dying and eventually causing the phone to reboot. I tried going into airplane mode / coming back out, but nothing.
As a last resort (so I could go to work) was to shut it down gracefully (reboots wouldn't let me get to hboot). And go and do a nandroid of the current setup and restore to yesterday right after I switched to 2.2.
After the nandroid finished I went ahead and rebooted it w/o a restore. This time the phone booted normally, no FC's and it's been running since then w/o any connection/reboot issues.
Obviously I'll be paying attention to this. It is actually nice having the "Droid..." so I know when it reboots

I havent had issue with the system process dying and rebooting. Just the incredibly annoying fluctuations in the bars and connectivity.
I would go to use my gTalk or gMail and it would say no internet connection. Or if you open the browser. Same thing.

No data
I updated the radio as well as the leaked 2.2 ROM. I now can't get any data. It will say there is a 3G connection but the market, Gmail, browser won't work. I was previously able to get data I haven't changed anything since.
I thought my data issue was using the Hybrid Altell/VZW prl, but after a *228 option 2 I am still having an issue. It seems to be when I shutdown the phone, turn it back on, the mobile data connection will not turn on. Toggling airplane mode will fix it, or sometimes a reboot fixes it.
Also having 3g/1x/no data issues post update to 2.2
Upgraded 8PM last night, all good until about 10am this morning, realized none of my apps were sync'd, then tried to use Opera/Market/Etc. all saying connectivity issues. The airplane mode on/off seems to fix it, wondering if its a select few and we should reflash or people are experiencing this across the board...

I had nearly the exact same thing happen to me. Flashed last night and then noticed the problem early today. A reboot of my phone fixed things; I'll continue to watch things closely.
Just got this for the first time as well.
I was just doing some configuration and needed to reboot - after doing so I did not have 3G and mobile network was ON in the settings.
Toggled to airplane mode and restarded - switched back after startup and 3G is back... but still this is troubling (I don't want there to be ANY problems haha)

I am trying SkyRaiders rom to see if theres any improvements. I am on WiFi and its been working good so far. I will know more tomorrow.
Are you just getting the slow downs/disconnects on cell or also on WiFi? I had some weird WiFi issues last night so I thought it was both. Are you all getting it on all data connections or just the mobile network?
Make sure System Select in Mobile Network settings is on Home Only. I did this and I've had zero data connectivity issues with the leak. Had them when it was on Automatic.
Try it out.
I will join in and say I am also loosing 3G...it would be fine for a little then disappear for a while...toggling wifi and airplane mode helps, but I want it fixed and not have to rely on those.
Seems that Sky Raiders Rom has fixed the issues for me.

Which version? I am using 2.00 and I am having 3G connectivity issues. When I set my mobile networks from automatic to home, I only connect at 1X instead of 3G.
Is this fixed in Sky Raider 2.01?
UPDATE: I should have stated my original problem which was my 3G data connection was shutting down at random and the only way to get it back was to go in and out of airplane mode. I also JUST NOW updated to Sky Raider 2.01 and see that I don't have and data connection at present. A reboot did not work either. I'll keep trying things...
UPDATE2: Got it working...for some reason it was turned off in settings. Appears to be working fine now. I haven't seen any disconnects yet. Fingers crossed...
UPDATE3: It started doing it again under Sky Raider version 2.01. Don't know whether it's the new v2 radio or something with Froyo...

It is beginning to look like maybe this is a radio (2.05.00.06.11) problem an not a OS issue. But what I don't understand is why more people have not complained. I do live in a fringe signal area for 3G, perhaps that has something to do with triggering this problem. But I too have found that toggling airplane mode isn't a consistent fix.
If this is indeed a radio issue, then we may have to just live with it until a new radio version is released. Perhaps it would help if more people came forward and shared their experiences about this alleged problem. If it is only a few of us, then what might we have in common???

See here, 99% sure has to do with WiFi. I've been turning off WiFi before I leave the WiFi area I'm connected to and I've yet to loose data connectivity.
If this is all there is, I have a fully working 2.2 on my DInc now...don't really see a reason to upgrade to the official!

I surely can't be the only one having this issue. It doesn't seem to be related to any particular firmware, as its been an issue ever since I got the phone, and I've since had quite a few different FW on it. Someone I spoke to on another forum with an SGS said theirs did this as well...
Basically, I can be happily surfing away, and then randomly, a page will not load - "Web page could not be loaded" message. Refreshing does not work. At best, turning the APN off or switching to Airplane mode and then back on seems to fix it most of the time. At other times, a full restart of the phone is required.
Most of the time this will happen once or twice in the course of a day, but today it happened on several occasions and it's getting annoying. I had to switch to GSM today for several hours - though that could have been my network provider, but its strange how other Vodafone users in my office were having no issues at the same time I was having issues, even when using the same APN settings.
Any ideas? This is quite a frustrating bug at times.
Unfortunately I can only be here for you , cause this is also happening to me. It is extremely annoying. I did not try the Flight mode switch though, I always had to restart my phone to fix it.
Tried a new rom with updated modem file? Could help

stick to only WiFi or only 3G
you will get those hic ups when the phone is changing between WiFi & 3G
it goes to either side depending which one has a stronger signal
it will have preferences for WiFi over 3G
WiFi is not as stable as 3G from personal experience, so i turn off WiFi and use 3G most of the time

UPDATE: Fixed, see post #7 for details.
Had my Nook about a week now. I know all about SOD, and have Tasker set to turn WiFi off when the screen is off, and it hasn't been a problem.
What has been a problem is the WiFi randomly dying. WiFi will be on, but it won't recognize my home network. After a reboot everything is back to normal.
I looked through another thread in the dev section about this, the thread had some examples of router settings. My router settings match those, and I'm still having this problem.
So I'm not sure- is it a kernel issue with the wifi driver, or still a router problem? Anyone else having this kind of issue and can point me in the right direction, maybe other router settings to try?
Thanks!
When you bring up the list of access points, does it see any of them? That is, do any APs have the little signal-strength meter next to them?
If not, that's a problem that ISTR has been fixed in recent nightlies; at least, I haven't encountered it in a couple of weeks, after getting it nearly daily.

No, it doesn't recognize the AP at all, and if I try to manually connect it'll connect for a second then drop it.
I'm a couple nightlies behind so I'll update and see if that helps.
What rom are you using with your nook? or just the stock rom. I have the same issue with the 87 nightly build, but it's gone when I tried a newer build.
I was just about to post something like. I have a similar Issue. I dont know what ROM I was running before ( flashed it many months ago, was Froyo) but yesterday I installed CM7 (Gingerbread) (from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227 ) and I have the same issue.
Wifi works and randomnly dies. It still shows connected and full signal strength, but it won't access the network/internet until I reboot it. All other devices connected to the router work fine, including an EVO 4G running Gingerbread.
Any Ideas?
Ok so I'm on the latest CM7 nightly now, still experiencing this problem. WiFi just drops out randomly, often in the middle of loading something.
When this happens I can see that WiFi is on, but it can't see any AP's- so it's not a router issue. Restarting fixes it, but it's annoying to be reading something then have to restart just to get connected again.
So now I'm thinking it's a kernel problem. Is there anyone who's running an older version of CM7 without the OC kernel built in, and has experienced this same issue?
Ok, got it fixed, or so I think. Figured I'd update here so anyone else having the same problem can get help.
The issue, as was suggested in another thread, is with having too many AP's saved. Because the NC was synced with my google account, it automatically downloaded a whole list of AP's from my phone. I went into wireless settings and deleted everything except the 2 or 3 I use on a regular basis, and the wifi is solid as a rock now.
HI ALL, Im pretty new here. after so many tries finally i was able to install cm7.1 on my defy. but im facing some issues. before the installation i forgot to take a back up of the existing ROM so if i have to go back to the previous ROM how to do that? and also there is no network coverage after the installation. please please anybody help!!!!!!
Have a vibrant myself but I'm helping a buddy get cm7 on his defy and after flashing didn't have a network signal. I looked at the cm7 install guide and it referenced a defy base band switcher app for better coverage. Had him try that and he got his data connection back. Might want to look into it or read the guide.

If your previous ROM was stock that came with your phone, flash the corresponding SBF file from the sticky on the Dev section to go back to stock. If it was some other custom ROM, wipe data/factory reset in CWM and flash the old ROM. Make backup of your apps using Titanium Backup if you want.
For CM7 network issues, choose the correct baseband from Defy Baseband Switcher. For India, pick anything that is 900/2100MHz...
Also, make sure you have read as many guides and First Posts on important threads as you can. Here is a collection of good threads you can read for these questions, and more that you might get later:

Hello! Noob here as well.
I installed CM7.1 stable on my Defy (running 2.2.2 foryo) 2 days ago.
All went well, except that network connection is lost after a couple of minutes after boot. Sometimes it takes an hour or two but I still end up with no connection.
I've googled everything about it in the last days. I played with the Baseband Switcher and although most options in the BB Switcher work right after a reboot, it still looses the signal after a couple of minutes.
One thing I noticed, when the signal is lost, trying to set the "Airplane mode" will fail. If trying to set Airplane ON - the notification icon will not replace the signal icon and will also be unable to set Airplane OFF (since it didn't finish turning ON).
I also noticed that if I force stop the "Dialer" system app, then the Airplane notification ico shows up, but still there's no way to turn it OFF (it's disabled in the menu). After a reboot Airplane can be set OFF and everything works for another small period of time (..until baseband crashes again?).
Hope it makes some sense. I'm quite sure this is not an operator issue or hardware related, since my Defy worked just fine before CM7.1
Also, I am located in Romania, operator is Orange.

I have the same issue, except that it is much rarer (ranging from every other day, to even a month between such incidents). It can also be triggered sometimes when I turn off Wi-Fi and the device tries to regain mobile data connection (not sure if it matters, but I set the network mode to 2G on my phone). The battery drain is increased if this occurs without the user noticing - the phone seems to search in vain for the signal.
Using the latest SEA baseband on M1 (Singapore).

I get this problem too. Happens every so often when I'm at work. I've always put it down to a bad signal where I work but as I always turn the wifi of before leaving home it could be down to that. If anyone has any solutions it would be great
Ok, a little update on this:
At the office now, further playing with the Baseband Switcher, I ended up selecting "Italia RT 2.51.1" which has the same 900/2100 freq that my operator requires and it seems to work. Even getting 3G.
If "2.51.1" is some sort of protocol version, then all the other options I've tried were either 4.x or 3.x or even 2.21.x ..and none of them worked for more then 30 minutes.
Also, not sure if signal strength has something to do with this because I did a test, going to the basement of my office in order to loose signal, then back up and it worked - got the signal back, without reboot or anything.
Also, I would really appreciate if someone could explain in a few words what those version numbers mean (ex: "Italia RT 2.51.1"), as I know nothing about gsm bands and protocols.
UPDATE: Back home, lost signal again, after a whole day without any problems. Funny.
UPDATE 2:
So after much google searching and trying literally every option in the Baseband Switcher, I switched my SIM card with a friend's SIM and guess what.. IT WORKED! Even more, when I inserted my original SIM into the other phone after a few minutes it lost signal, too! It was a faulty SIM, that has just started to "die".
Conclusion:
- Keep playing with that Baseband Switcher until you get something that works for you.
-Make sure your SIM is working properly in other phones, otherwise ask your operator to replace it.
Thanks and hope this helps.

Not really. As long as you have a working Baseband selected (with correct frequencies) I don't think it matters.
But overall CM7.1 has better battery efficiency then stock ROMs, or at least that's what I felt.
update:
Well, I had a play with the baseband switcher, realising i was on 'international'. I switched to uk t-mobile and from there it seemed to work much better. A slight blip at work today (think it's a bit of a signal black-spot though) but restarted and it seems fine again. I've also just realised it's gone 37hrs since its last charge too
Strangely my other problem, the backlighting on the soft-keys not working, fixed itself at the same time. dunno if these two things are linked or not?
i use the CEE one.
So my phone has issues seeing home/friends networks after I've been away for a few hours, be it work or whatever. If I restart the phone it sees them fine, but at this point i pretty much have to do that every time I come home. It doesn't help if I forget then try to re-add the network, and it's not just my personal wifi either.
This is an issue I've had on my Nexus 4 for the last few months, it persists over different roms no matter how many times I do a clean install. Anyone have advice for my problem? Would a logcat be helpful here?
Follow up question is... Would having an encrypted phone possibly affect this?

Not sure if encryption affect it though but I had pretty much same thing happened to me connecting my home wifi router and extenders couple days ago.
Same rom next day I immediately picked up my work wifi but when I get home zilch, nothing.
Same night I dirty flashed a new nightly then I was able to connect pretty much everywhere.
Weird though...
Rom is CM 10.1 with linaro patches btw.
Yea I'm on the CM nightlies now, came from AOKP and had the same problem.

Do you have wifi frequency band on auto..? If not, try that.
It was set to that as well, I'm flashing the factory images to see if that helps. If not I might trade this guy in with my Best Buy warranty.
After flashing the factory image then going out and coming back an hour later, it picked up my wifi no problem. So I decided to flash paranoid android and restore data with TiBu but the problem occurs again. I do see the Roku network my Roku 3 puts out, my network is hidden so I'll try making it visible and see if that changes anything.
Open the wifi menu where you would normally view wifi networks listed.
Hit the three dots on the lower right.---then hit advanced.
uncheck wifi optimization, and uncheck avoid poor connections.
Hit the home key.
recheck your wifi networks then they should be there.
Well that worked for me, thanks!
I'm flashing the factory images to see if that helps.
