im loving this phone - Galaxy S II General

Hi all,
I use to own a apple 3gs, and then about a few weeks ago i got the galaxy s2.
I was looking for apps etc and i cam across the xda forum and started reading.
before i knew it my phone was rooted, i used the guide from galaxys2root.com.
I stayed with a rooted phone with the clockwork mod, titanium pro on standard rom for abit and then i started to read abit more baout different roms. a friend of mine i have learnt is on the forum as well and he helpted me out alot with things like making back ups in cwm, titanium and saving contacts etc to sd card.
my first rom was the villainrom 3.0, i only had this for a day or so, but i wanted to try another. i have just loaded on foxhound and first thoughts is that it is very nice. im going to try this one out for abit to see how i get on.
to be honist i am taking back by the amount of info and guides on this site, and i loved the vid when joining up!
the galaxy s2 is light years ahead of my old 3gs and you can do sooooo much more with it.
anyway, thak you for all the information and help
ian

Ian we'll see you about and enjoy your handset.. I see you have Tesco moble loads of date I take it LOL..
Take care and welcome..

yes i got it as a tesco pay as you go.
i put in a older tesco sim card that i had, i get 500 any net/time mins, unlimited txt, unlimited data for £10 and it is on a one month rolling contract

Some how I know this package ..
If you have not get yourself a case to protect your SGS2 FLIP case do a damn good job to protect all the phone.

i got a otterbox case, as i liked the idea of the covers to go over the charging port and headphone jack. the screen protector went on very well with only a couple of micro specs under it.
i have put in a sumsung 8gb class 10 sd card and a samsung car charger.
the only problem im having at the mo is getting my yahoo.co.uk email to work, but im hunting through the search as we speak

I have managed to get my yahoo.co.uk email to work.
i tried all the different ways i found on here about using different port numbers etc, but with no luck.
I removed the access from yahoo on my pc, and then set it up again on my phone, the auto way and it went through fine and is fully working.
the only problem is that i not have two yahoo.co.uk email accounts now. both the same, but one of them works (the one i just set up) and the old one (i think this cam over from when i did titanium restore) and this one does not work at all, i can not go into settings on it, and it will not delete.
any ideas?
thanks again
ian

Refreshing to see someone coming from iPhone new on here who appreciates the SGSII for the superb phone it is, generally you have people on here who might be coming from an iPhone moaning saying such and such doesn't do it as well as the iPhone did it, i ask myself why even bother getting this phone if you are just gonna come onto the SGSII forums to complain, before you purchase a phone especially an expensive one like this you really should do some research and reading up.
Anyway sorry for going off topic, glad your enjoying your SGSII

welcome and nice to hear someone new that takes the time to read before asking stupid questions that are already answered infinite times =)
now to your problem, my first guess would be to delete the app-data of the app you use to access the mail-accounts. this would of course delete the already setup mail account data too, so you would need to configure both of them from scratch (but you know how to do it now, don't ya )
you can delete app-data by going to settings->applications->manage applications->choose the application->delete data (right next to "move to SD card" .. not UNINSTALL)

I love my I9100 too, best Android around bar none

Another ex iPhone 3gs user here
Finally a phone that can do everything without the annoying & idiotic limitations of apple
Only problem I have is the battery which can't stand a day but nobody is perfect
I like Android so much that I m thinking to start developing apps a I have an IT degree and backround.
Any ideas / pointing fingers where I should start from?

Another EX Iphone 4 user here, difficult to get bored of this phone, you can flash a new rom, use a different launcher, play around with themes, pretty much do what ever you like with it, freedom of choice as opposed to swipe to the left, swipe to the right, launch an app...is that it Phone

I still own an iPhone 4 as a second phone. Its is jailbroken on ios 5 with every crack and app thinkable. But it is just so boring.
I've only had the s2 for just over a month now, but even when I had the S1 I still couldn't use the iPhone. I used to be the biggest apple fanboy until I played with the S1 for a couple of days.

awesome phone
i don;t know why people pick other android phones that cost almost the same price. super amoled plus screen, best android camera, most internal memory compared to competition, unlocked bootloader, highest benchmarkings by far, best reviews.
HtC, motorola are releasing faster versions of their summer releases and i still wouldn't change
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was bracing myself for the iphone 4s camera to destroy galaxy s2 but some reviews said it didnt...better in some departments but samsung still narrowly beat it in a few others

same here...been an iphone user for the last 3 years...honestly thought that it was the best out there...but honestly...i would not swap my galaxy for nothing...(maybe the S3) welcome aboard fella...any help you need just give me a message

i re installed foxhound and it was gone, but as soon as i reinstalled the back up on titanium, it was back, and i could not delete it. so i went into titanium to the email app, and erased data. and that got rid of it. im putting them back on now

The only problem I find with this phone is, leaving it alone, little bit too addictive, my eyes are Samsung Galaxy s2 shaped

incase anyone lese needs this info, this is the settings etc on my emails that i used to get them to work.

I could be wrong, but with this foxhound rom, im sure the battery is lasting longer.
on the standard rom after a normal day like today im sure the % was alot lower.
i have just taken this screen shot pic (foxhound rom) i have my emails to chect every 15 mins, and wifi on most of the time
in this time as well, i have re installed the foxhound rom with the cwm and re installed apps etc with titanium, and set up my emails accounts.
i have run quadrant and linpack a few times to.
what do you think?

aye, sure is a top phone..agree with all things said but I will add that I got my device on day of release and in nearly 8 months it doesn't look a day old.
I've not been overly careful, have no screen protector, just the official standard case.
apart from a few micro scratches on the screen that you can only see when the screen is off and in direct light at angles, you'd think it was brand new...
has been dropped about 10 times to albeit only from a couple of feet, from sofa, or from top of pc tower.
it may be plasticy to some but it's kept it's premium look all this time.

This is something that i don't understand. People moan like hell about how the phone feels "delicate in your hands", yet I'm a powerlifter and it seems fine to me. To be honest, i think that the lightweight and streamline attributes of this phone are huge perks.

Should I come back to the TyTN? or get a Blackjack

Hey, I've spent some substantial time outside of the windows mobile world. Started using a Nokia E61..great device just kinda slow. And I messed the blackberry pearl and then kept the Blackberry 8800 for a long while. Just recently I purchased a Dash for the 3rd time and I'd have to say this is the most stable and fun experience I've had thus far. My major gripe is navigation through the OS via the DPAD. So I've decided to get a blackjack/i600...OR Return to the super powerful beast the TyTN/8525/Hermes. I'm trying to see if I really need all those features in comparison to the Blackjack. Copying and pasting natively within a web page is something I miss. Heck, being able to literally copy and paste any piece of text no matter where you are - i miss. Back when I owned the TytN previously I had 2 gripes. The Core Player/tcpmp issue with ATI. (I see there's a patch now ). And I would randomly not be able to connect to the internet at times because it would come up with a "answering modem has disconnected" and keep doing that till I soft reset. I believe that was a radio rom issue to be quite honest. I've gotten used to the one handed use and exposed keyboards. Do I really want to return to this world? I tweaked my MDA & TytN to the best capability a few months ago. Ahhh the good ol Molski Faria days! . The keyboard on the TyTN is perfect btw. Never a miss type. And usually if I had to emergency respond to a text at a stoplight, I'd be able to do it so fast that it would defeat any purpose of randomly trying to type one handed. I dunno. Any feedback would be appreciated as I'm purchasing something today
i used the 8125 then upgraded to 8525, i tried the blackjack for 2 days and hated it, even thru it has 3g its slow and the applications take so long to open\load, 8525 is so much faster and user friendly and yes u will need the apps even thru u think u wont, also the functions, call quality are so much better, i also tried the pearl and did not like it b\c of the blakcberry connect and time it takes to connect to web, go with the tytn u will not be disappointed, blackjack has nothing on it, u cant tweak it out like u can a tytn, u choose slow web whn u can get lightening web
I'm curious...
...do you always need someone to hold your hand when you make a simple decision? ;-P
Get a hermes and stop pi$$ing about with inferior devices ;-D
woah there. If you dont need a touchscreen on it i would say get a blackjack. I have a samsung i320 and it is great. I have a hermes too though and that is also great but if i dont need all the functionality of the hermes. ie. the bigger screen then i always take the samsung. I cant wait for the i600 to come out on orange. In fact, im going to ring them right now.
Simple answer: the Hermes will depreciate in value less quickly, so it's a better investment.
Yes I need someone to hold my hand. Hence, me participating in a glorious forum such as this one. I seek knowledge from your experience. I'm still sitting here torn because part of me says just get a i600 and leave the rest to a laptop/psp for multimedia purposes. Same can be said about keeping the Dash since I already do own it. But one thing I am noticing and disliking a lot with smartphones is that they cannot keep up with my typing. I've tried about 6 of them. 2 blackjacks and 4 dash's . I'll admit the dash is better but still, when i type fast I ALWAYS have to backspace for mistypes. . TyTN never had this problem. the i600 could have fixed this. too bad there aren't many owners. I have an offer locally for a 8525 for 400.00 and im close to pulling the trigger..but I'm rationalizing things out. Needs/Wants/etc
GO on, push the button and order the Tytn, you know you want to
Its the best device of its kind ive used and ive been looking for something like it for many years. I had intended to keep my nokia 6230 charged and use it when i just wanted a phone if i was going to the pub or something, but i just cant go back to a lesser device now. Besides, having google on my tytn is just too handy for pub quizzes
Its a very fast and stable beast these days with the new batch of WM6 roms and radio upgrades. I have very few problems with my setup below, and mine is pretty well loaded with apps too!
I would recommend the Tytn as out my personal experience the Tytn is the best device available.
Nah, still get a hermes Best phone I've ever had
As for it not keeping up when you type and having to back space to make corrections....I recommend Mavis Beacon for that ;-D
Well, for what it is worth, you chose to post this in a forum that is 100% dedicated to Hermes. Therefore, you are getting the expected response - almost universal recommendations to get the Hermes. Now, assuming you are not insane or stupid (as I am sure you are not) then clearly you expected this result. Thus, one can assume that you WANTED to be urged toward the Hermes. This can only mean that you want the Hermes and have from the beginning. GET THE HERMES!
Go Tytn
My Windows mobile 5 tytn was good, but since upgrading the rom to WM6 (LVSW) it has been great. It's fast and very stable. Battery life is approx 2 days.
Go Tytn

90 percent true for the most part although you come to second guess yourself every now and then. and sometimes you end up with something you thought you wouldn't ever consider again. Ladies & Gentlemen I ordered a Nokia E61i - yes the new one with camera. So who's bidding to see how long I last? (what's the icon for an ashamed face).
a day - a week is all i really need to judge this device..and if it fails then I fail.
Well...
I replaced my TYTN with a Samsung I600. I would be curious to know how many of the people who replied ever tested BOTH device....
I still own both...
While I don't discuss the pda feature of the tytn I have to say it was the worst phone I've ever had.
The I600 is just a little bit slower in apps using, navigation speed also is comparable. On the other hand is far much more stable.
Signal receiption and voice quality is far much better.

The Positive Thread

Hi all Uni owners!
We have several threads regarding solving problems, newbies questions, new ROM´s, etc. so...
I decided to create this thread with the only intention of sharing good and positive comments about your Uni´s.
How you get it?
Why you prefer it from other devices?
The most amazing thing you ever done with it?
Just a few examples...
Here the one!

Yes we all love our UNI's
Hi I would like to tell thts its an amazing device(more amazing with the custom Roms available)special thanx 2 TOMAL... seems u can do everything with it..
N though everythins amazin abt it the most amazing thing I find is I use it as my remote control 4 my ac,tv,dvd and virtually all devices thru its IR port!!
i bought mine because it looks and feels like a real miniature laptop, and i love it, super fast and never lets you down
Best device to have
I have been wanting one for a long time. I didnt want to pay those crazy initial prices back in '05 since Im in the US.
I caught a good deal on Ebay. Broke USB port. Hoping to get that fixed soon. So I bought another
Customization, full keyboard, rotating screen, and its my mini laptop.
Best thing is hard to choose.
Either the chicks I have picked up with it
or how the haters be when Im playing Super Mario Bros. or Zelda
Being positive about Universal
It isn't difficult to be positive about the Uni.
I bought an Athena on Ebay three weeks ago, tempted by TV out, faster processor, USB host capability and bigger screen. (I give talks using Powerpoint at church, I am a Christian.)
Sure it will do a few things that Uni won't do but at a price! As an everyday machine the Uni wins for me.
There are a few dark clouds on the horizon. Cooks WILL move on to newer devices. That is where the action is. As I write these are the numbers viewing the following forums.
Diamond 429
Blackstone 478
Dream 365
Universal 47
I am a machinist, not qualified in any of the computing sciences, neither am I familiar with what is happening at the "sharp end" of rom development on this site, so correct me if I am wrong.
WM 6.5 is out now so there will be no more 6.1 builds. Eventually 6.5 will be replaced by 7.
The new OS is designed for the newer hardware. There is a gap opening up. I believe it is going to get harder and harder for the cooks left with us to get these newer roms to run on a Uni. In my experience 6.5 does not seem to run as well as 6.1. It is not only because most Unis have only 64Mb of ram. I am flashing roms to my Athena which has plenty of ram left after flashing and so far none of those 6.5 roms are as reliable as the 6.1 AP4 rom.
As I say I am not an expert so please correct me if I am wrong.
Having said that...
I am using Tomals 8.9 rom and my Uni could not run any better. 3-4 days without a soft reset. Are the newer devices even as good as this? (please comment)
I use this device. It is a PDA and a phone. It is not a machine for flashing roms and that is why it has a future. It is a great piece of hardware. Big screen, 5 row keyboard etc etc etc you have heard it all before. I have dropped it, sat on it, spilled stuff on it, given it to kids to watch video on (was I mad?) took it apart to clean metal filings out of it (the speaker magnets kept it off the boards.) and it still keeps going. Its armour plated.
If we never get another rom, if we never get another application, the developers on this site have given us all a great (the greatest?) device plus years of fun tweaking it and it cost us NOTHING. Any money they made was given to them as a donation and I am sure nobody gave up their day job.
So thank you to all the developers past and present who gave us what we have today. If you move on to a new device and forum we wish you well.
This thread is about positives for the Universal.
On TV there are commercials for the 3rd generation iPh**e. (Sorry for my bad language) What is the "latest feature" on this best selling "smartphone"?
VIDEO.
If this is the benchmark, the Universal owner has nothing to envy. Even the new WM devices, what do they do our Uni doesn't do? Not much. I look forward to years of service, God willing, from my two Unis. Love them!
Bump!
Come on Uni owners!
Is this little post the only positive things you can say about your Universal?
I´m sure you have more nice things to say!
I got my first Uni for... wait for it... NZD$18, which, at the time was around USD$10. You can only imagine the state one buys a Uni in for that much, haha.
Not to worry, I got it assembled, fixed and working. Many more Unis in various state of disarray, disrepair and disassembly followed. Such is my job, obviously.
At the moment I own 2 complete Unis (and 2 in parts, just in case ), one had been assembled by me from 4 different broken units and actually is a hybrid of Imate/HTC/02/Dopod versions and is fitted with black keyboard with blue backlight from O2, waiting for the brand new black body which is going to be purchased as soon as the FX improves. I call it my baby and have no intentions of ever parting with it. It's the main Uni that is set up and running for my everyday needs, another is there to test new ROMs on.
I have other phones, quite a few, in fact (again, due to the nature of my job - can't resist getting some poor crashed invalid for next to nothing and making it perfect and working again), WM, Symbian and flash OS, resistive and capacitive touch screens, insanely expensive and old cheapies, I use them on a regular basis in addition to my Uni.
Thanks to TOMAL (formerly known as Ranju) - kept me interested and excited all this time.
As for the poll
I clicked 'had chance to change but kept it', although I would also like to mention, that another one for me would be clicking 'If it dies, I'll get another one'
The most amazing story about my Uni: I was robbed once and my bag with everything inside, including my baby-Uni, the keys to the business, house, 2 cars etc, wallet with everything, bluetooth headset, SD cards and other bits and pieces - EVERYTHING was taken! Obviously, I was in a terrible state, cancelled my credit cards, called the police, changed the locks on the business, because I couldn't even leave work. The worst part was that my car was at the back in my personal parking space and I couldn't even leave the business to go and check if it was taken! Most of all I was sad to have my Uni stolen (see previous post). Somehow everything else that was in that bag didn't matter as much.
Anyway, the next day I got a call from a lotto shop next door, telling me they have my bag and found me because there was this 'little silver machine, like a computer' inside with my details on it. Yep, it was my Uni. What do you know - EVERYTHING inside the bag was still inside and the only things taken were my cancelled credit cards. The dumb thieves didn't take my Uni and here it is, still with me!!!!
I left the poll for all to choose several options.
My most amazing expirience with Uni was:
I was in a taxi to airport at 5am, so I was kind of sleepy, I arrived to airport and leave the taxi and my Uni was there!!
I did not noticed untill after 15 min, so I run like hell to go downsatairs where taxis leaves airport, so I saw my ex-taxi, I run because he was just starting to move, I stop him and my Uni was in the same place I left on passengers seat!!!!!
I was ready to loose my flight to Bangkok to recover my Uni!!!
It was amazing!! I got it back!
All this story happened in one of the most populated cities in the globe: Mexico City: 22 million!
-------------------------------
Other time I left my Uni on the table of a restaurant (Too much drinks ) and when I was leaving the place, the waiter came and said to me: "Hey you forgot your calculator"..... LOL it was true!
I´m sure if he noticed the amazing device he found perhaps he will not give it to me!

excellent idea. I voted 1,2 and 4
My wife never liked my Uni. From her point of view, I'm simply carrying a brick.
If someone gives her an opportunity to destroy anything...whatever she likes I'm sure she will destroy my Uni at first place, LOL.
I had to replace my Psion Revo. This was excellent device - small, stylish with good keyboard. I decided to buy device with phone and computer in one... so after research I went for the Universal.
I needed
Good keyboard (taking notes during church service - PaulKen, I'll have to attend one of yours! )
Plenty of additional memory (my revo had no SD slot, and I wanted SD because it was swappable with my then phone (MMC) and camera).
Flash upgradeable (like my MP3 player, just means the device never goes out of date!)
Large screen. Very useful for many things, but especially for sharing with others. Now we're in a digital photo age, I hardly every was able to show my photo's to people in person unless printing them all off, so best way get a big screen!
Something which I can put my Bible (translations) and commentries on. Again needing storage as well.
Navigation. If you're gonna spend out on navigation, what's the point in buying a dedicated device - better to get a PPC which you can do so many other things on (and again, you need a screen large enough that you can actually see it!)
Sync diary with filter for work/church/personal
Play games (at least Yahzee for wife )
Camera - I always carry my PDA around with me, but not always my camera. So I always get shots that I would otherwise miss out on.
Carryable - not necessarily top pocket stuff, but can at least fit in a pocket somewhere (before I was carying a PDA + Phone)
Did I say large screen, and useable keyboard. Sorry, just had to rub it in
Oh, and as for 'if my Uni dies'...
bought new digitizer to replace scratched one (... now use screen protection)
bought another Uni to replace broken screen and will keep for parts
bought another Uni to upgrade to 128MB (will be selling 64MB uni soon to reclaim some costs)
So I voted that if my Uni died I'd buy another one...
But also, I haven't got enought money to buy another one. I now have my eye on the Rhodium. But I'm waiting until I see it eBay for about £100-£150. So I'll most probably see you all there in about 5 years! Until then, my Uni will do me good.
Bump
I think it´s worth to keep this thread alive!

Going nuts! with the limited space :( and other annoyances...

i think i'm hitting my limit here.
not sure if i can last a few more months with this limitation... (keeping fingers crossed for the next best thing that runs on 1700+2100)
i'm using Dropbox (3 GB) to ease the pain
i'm using Fiabee (1 GB) <--- that's nothing, it's like a drop in a bucket
i'm using Subsonic (not very useful, as it still uses local storage to catch the songs)
i'm using mSpot (same as Subsonic, easier to use, no need for server)
I'm using Picasa (but is useless unless you have actual space to take pictures)
I'm also using pixelpipe (yet another media sync that catches stuff locally, which also consumes local space)
the only real solution i see is to be able to plug in an USB flash drive to the SNS, and play my medias from there.
unfortunately that is out of the question at the moment, as no one have been able to get it working yet via USB storage driver
The problem with both dropbox and fiabee is their download rate is not fast enough to make them a viable Streamer
not to mention, you can't even access the files until you have downloaded them, which also makes it pointless as you (me) have no free space left to receive the files anyways
It's not fun (a very tedious task), having to keep uninstalling a bunch of apps/games every time i want to check out another app/game, or deleting a whole bunch MP3s / Videos that you use often, only to have to download them again a few minutes later.
on the SGS the 2 GB space for Apps/Games + MKV, DIVX and other media support on the SGS was like a GOD sent, also the extra microSD support really opened up the phone to all kind of possibilities.
unfortunately the SGS has its own demons as well like dying internal SD, GPS issues, bad file system, etc, etc, just to name a few.
seems like currently i'm stuck between the sword & a rock
......... i'm slowly starting to regret getting the SNS:
- main issue limited space
- unable to natively do Video Call other phones like Nokia, LG, Samsung
- no gorilla glass (already got a deep scratch with a minor drop, the old SGS went through a lot of dips without a single scratch)
the only positive thing i like the SNS:
- 2.3 OS
- the phone actually works without dying internal SD issues
is this a common thing are many people running out of space with the nexus s? i thought there was ample room with this phone with the new internal storage. i'm confused.

i'm using Dropbox (3 GB) to ease the pain
i'm using Fiabee (1 GB) <--- that's nothing, it's like a drop in a bucket
i'm using Subsonic (not very useful, as it still uses local storage to catch the songs)
i'm using mSpot (same as Subsonic, easier to use, no need for server)
- 2.3 OS
- the phone actually works without dying internal SD issues

looks like you have a lot of media that you use often. That should have been your number one concern when making your phone buying decision. 1gb for apps should be more than enough space but maybe im kidding myself. And if you needed a phone with more storage space for media there were/are plenty of options available. just sounds to me like you didnt do your research beforehand. IJS

lets just say the phone is replacing my laptop, and i'm trying to do everything i was able to do on my laptop on the phone (which it can)
but the problem is the limited space
if it had the microSD support like its counter part Galaxy S, then it would have been a breeze to just swap another microSD to access the files you want quickly

+1
Return it before the 30 days and buy yourself a phone with an sdcard slot. There is not much that can be done after it gets full.. hopefully 32gb will be enough

not the case, i just though i could live with the limitation, but in the end it's not working out as planned.
still, i'll hang on to the SNS until a dual core with SAMOLED comes out, then i'll make my move.
this is the only Solid and stable Samsung phone so far, going back to a SGS Vibrant is like playing with fire

My other suggestion, get a dedicated PMP.

@AllGamer
Honestly, mate, I'd suggest returning/sending your Samsung Nexus S back if you still can. I've watched your post history over the last week or so and every other post seems to be a gripe about the Nexus S(like this one) or wishing that you had something from the Galaxy S lineup. Its clear that this phone is not a good fit for you and you should go back to your SGS device, whatever it may be.
I'm not trying to start a flamewar, call you out, or disrespect you or anything. I just think you'd be happier with a Vibrant or what have you. Different strokes for different folks.

don't worry mate
all comments are welcome.
I did play with the idea of getting the the SGS vibrant SGH-T959, i might even trade my SGS i9000 for the SGH-T959
Currently i'm toying with the idea of converting the SGS i9000 to use the SGH-T959 radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908120
in the end if i can find some Software alternative, then perhaps i can go on a few more months longer and switch to the next best phone all together, assuming they will support 1700+2100
"i'm using mSpot (same as Subsonic, easier to use, no need for server)"
hey man,did you update mspot??? recently.
they do stream from server now, without downloading it on your phone.
all my mspot(xept covers/albumart folder) are empty even after playing 30 songs.
When did you sign up for Fiabee? They upgraded my account to 15 GB on new years for being "one of the first to try it" or something like that.

well anyway. you should get some decent $$ on ebay for the nexus
Well, you could get an android pmp like archos 43. Nice device with sd card, and can obviously download music. Its their new, smaller line. 2.1, but hey. Its a pmp.

the Nexus S sells for a lot more here locally than on eBay
so i have no problem at all letting it go, but as i posted a few message above
the SNS is the most solid device so far released by Samsung, that being said
i find it very hard to find another phone with SAMOLED display that can beat the SNS, as the Vibrant is not very good else i've swapped the SNS for the SGS in a heart beat.
i still have another SGS here with me, but it's not compatible to 1700+2100

Sold my streak :)

Sold my streak
Used my streak for about 6 months before I finally decided to sell it. A big thank you to dj_steve and all the users who wrote guides and helped make streak the amazing device it was. Unfortunately the more I used my streak, the more I realized it just wasn't the ideal device for me. There were just too many small quips that I had with the streak that killed the user experience for me.
Here's a few:
Screen size and weight- The 5" screen was great for gps and web browsing, but I could never get used to texting even with the thumb keyboard app. Due to its weight, I found it difficult to hold the streak in one hand for long periods of time. This usually happend when I used the kindle app so I found myself having to either sit up or lay the streak down to read.
Battery Life - For the life of me, I couldn't get more than 24 hours on a single charge (even with juice defender). I only left wifi and the cellular radio on and would make sure to keep gps and bluetooth off . I'm sure I was doing something wrong since many of you faired much better but could never figure it out (I recently read dj_steve posting that he got 4+ days on his streak).
Market update - A few months ago the update to the android market made it incredibly difficult to find new apps. Before you could use the middle key (menu) and could easily select search but with the update that option went away. Instead you now had to click the small search icon in the upper right corner to find anything (And I hated the new tile layout in the market, the old list version was much better)
Charging - With the otterbox commuter case, I always had problems plugging the dell sync cable into the charging port. The frustration was similar to plugging a flash the drive in the wrong way
Music - I couldn't use the streak as a dedicated mp3 player due to its size and couldn't get a music app that didn't catalog every audio file on the streak. Instead I would always find myself carrying my ipod touch everywhere alongside my streak
SD card - I never liked using the unorganized folder layout whenever I connected my streak. I would always find empty folders in the root directory and was never sure if they were the remnants of a deleted app
Gameplay - When I bought my streak, I knew it wasn't made as a gaming device. But I never could get popular games like planets vs zombies to even run on my streak. Games would always crash even after re-installing and closing all apps that were currently running in the background.
All in all, the streak has been a great gadget to play with but wasn't the device I needed. Again, a big thanks to everyone on this forum who helped make it great

You can freeze the market updater to prevent the new market from installing. This really isn't a Streak issue - it's a Google issue.

I solved my issue with the Commuter case by cutting the port covers off. I felt they were more in the way than useful. Also not a Streak issue, it's a case design issue.

This is also not a Streak issue - it is an Android issue.
I am also moving from the Streak to a smaller phone. My issue with the Streak is also one of it's best features, it's size. I just want something smaller that is easier to carry every day. Just as I pointed out solutions that work for me to the issues you raised I am sure others will say that they have no problems with carrying the Streak every day.
In the end you have to use a phone that suits your needs.
Agreed, the majority of my problems came from using the android os. As much I wanted to like it, I couldn't make it work. The big selling point behind the steak was it's screen and I didn't use it enough to justify it's size
i bought a cheap 10" tablet 4 months ago so my streak just get used as a phone now
my streak broke a couple a weeks ago (stuck on dell logo & no recovery) so i dug out my o2 xda guide & i really enjoyed using a smaller phone
but now i got my new streak back the other day & i cant wait till march until i get a small phone again i just dont need a 5" phone anymore
Sound like it's not the Streak that's not for you, it's Android that's not for you. Hope you enjoy your Iphone

dell streak at his size and his specs is a great device, i use one more than 6 months and i don't think i will sell it or change it soon because streak have everything i want from a device: big screen for navigation, reading, writing, 2 micro sd slots for memory card (maxim 64gb) (i use now 8gb for system and 16gb for apps, multimedia ...), nice design, speed and many more .

These days i reckon you could have a maximum of 128gb using 2 64GB MicroSDXC cards formatted to FAT32, crazy amount of storage.
ok i am a little confused. where is the 2nd sd card slot? is it hidden some where?
I'm a DELL Streak 5 owner as well... for nearly a year.
I love it so much but I really have to say, when I compare it to my friend's Samsung GALAXY Note... the weight of my streak is a big big difference...
delete the post. sorry..
Compare to Galaxy Note, the design in Dell Streak is better. Also Galaxy Note looks like a Chick-phone, which it is because samsung advertise it targetting for secretary/Office Lady who like to take a note alot.
I am still waiting for better phone to replace my Streak, probably the one that comes with Quad Core Tegra 3 processor, and 720p display that is "not an AMOLED", and better design than Galaxy Note.

Bugs!

Just to put this post in some context. I have been buying mobile phones since around 1988? I have owned most brands types with different OS the lot. I have never had a bug problem with ANY of my past mobiles including those from Samsung like the Nexus S, SGS11, SGS3, SG Note.
This is NOT a bash Samsung nor bash the Note3 post.
I purchased my Note 3 on the day of introduction to the market along with the Gear, 25 09 13. Since that time I have had to factory reset my Note FOUR times through ?Bugs?. First bug was the notification sound kept going off every few moments for 24 hours all night long. It nearly went through the window. Had to turn it off spend hours next day trying to find the cause, couldn't so I factory reinstalled the phone. All good for a week, then S-voice and this is the big bug, it keeps answering me even though its shut off!
All of a sudden it will speak to me and say it cant find what ever the conversation may be I am having at the time? Seems to have a complete mind of its own so much so my family have started to sit around the phone when we chat to allow the Note to partake? Its surreal. Factory reset twice and still the same.
I am also having other programmes open when I am not activating them. Several programmes also seem to have a mind of their own?
This is not me, thank God, I have yet to go completely gaga, my family are actually asking to set the phone down so we can see what its going to do next!
Would there be a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 exorcist available in the membership? Its gone from being annoying to a cause of much amusement for my family but its truly getting on my t1ts
Any suggestions, apart from burning it at the stake, would be welcomed. :cyclops:
Many thanks in advance.:good:
Kind regards
I havent experienced any of those problems. The only problem I have is the my magazine app keeps crashing.

I think you should return the device to a samsung service centre to swap phones, sound like you really have a bugged one, i bought mine within the same week and so far so good, no problems or hickups whatsoever. For me it's the 1st samsung device i am truly 100% happy with. (had the i9000/i9100/i9300/N7000/N7100 and now the N9005)
All of them had their own bad things, for example S1 had RFS filesystem lagsauce, S2 had EMMC brickbug like the Note1, S3 and note2 had the suddendeath bug and not to forget the AMOLED build quality on all phones.
Hope you get yours fixed/swapped for a good one.
I've had a couple problems with phone freezing, soft buttons not responding but I realized it was the app "Android Tuner" that caused it.
But without Android Tuner the phone works flawlessly like my other Samsung ones.
Sorry to hear about your problems though.
Runs fine here although I did disable some bloat including S Voice since I prefer Google's better.

It sounds like you have S Voice set to always listen which includes when the device is off. The SGS2 used to have this feature but it chugged battery. I like and use this feature, for example to call someone when my phone's sitting on my desk without having to pick it up until the person I'm calling picks up. If they don't I can leave a message via speakerphone. All without ever having touched the phone. This feature's return is Samsung's answer to LG's Knock On.
I have S-voice deactivated so it cannot function yet it does?
My family find this hilarious. I was in the rest room this evening sitting on the loo, to be blunt I began with wind and the bloody deactivated S-voice asked me to repeat what I had said as she didn't catch that and then asked if I wanted it to look for Pruuup on Google! I swore at the phones (sorry about the lack of self control) and S-voice told me to calm down! THIS IS ridiculous.
My grandson now wants to play with the darn thing and I find him having a conversation with this lady known as S-voice.
I shall well be in the dog house if I do manage to resolve this most annoying and very peculiar problem!:silly:
I repeat the S-voice is not even turned on. I actually found myself looking this evening in the loo for hidden cameras expecting to find myself on some TV, 'You have been had' sort of game. What began as odd turned to rather humorous, now I am talking to some lady on a mobile phone who is telling me to keep calm. Any one know the phone number of the FBI? I think I have been bugged?
Hey I could write a book and it could be made into a film. The phone that came to life and.....Oh dear......I might not like the ending
I have looked in the mirror and psychoanalysed myself and I appear as bonkers as 'normal', nothing new....What on earth can be doing this?
I dare not return it to the store as no one will believe me unless my family are at my side and they like the mobile as it is. The other point that worries me is should I take it back and the phone behaves itself I could find myself being carted away by two men in white coats for a psychiatric evaluation? Knowing my luck S-voice lady, she would keep stum until I was discharged then chuckle at me as I walked away from the fruit and nut ward!:silly:

You mentioned you have a Gear. It uses the phone's S Voice app to function. When a Gear's connected I don't know if you can fully disable S Voice on the phone. I occasionally get "microphone in use by another application" errors on both the phone and Gear so mic control between the two isn't perfect yet. Maybe that's related to your issue.

Yes I have the Gear. Oddly enough (to date) this S-voice situation only occurs when my Gear is turned OFF? If I use the gear the problem goes?
Thanks for mentioning that even though I still have no idea what to do about it.
I wonder if Stephen King would like to buy a mobile?

There have been two updates to Gear Manager. The last one really improved the connection between the phone and the Gear. Make sure you update to it. Also, hard reset your Gear before connecting it to the updated Gear Manager. All your apps and settings on the Gear will be restored. Hopefully that'll cure your haunted setup.
Telus Note 3 user here
I can tell you that I have tested all apps thoroughly and I have had absolutely No issues from day one fresh out of the box.
Stays cool and battery goes long. I downloaded multiple apps too from the Play Store, No problems at all so far.
I am planning to root after a while.

Lol, now before you go writing books on how the Note 3 is a failure, it really does sound like your specific phone is messed up. You can keep trying to fix it but it'll probably still mess up in some way.
And I'm pretty sure they'd believe you if you brought it in and it acted fine. But they'll probably just factory reset it. They think that's the answer to everything. Not sure of your carrier, but with Verizon I just have to call in and they'll troubleshoot it, and if it still doesn't work they send a replacement. And since the phone is still new it should be a new phone and not just a refurb.
Bring to service center. End of story.
Your issues is rare, some spirit inside the phone.
Best Device so Far
Hello all,
Am glad to be part of the Note3 N-9005 crew
coming from my good ol' GT-I9100 S2, which hardly had anything working wrong. I hardly had any trouble with my S2, no brickbug, etc, always kept testing new ROMs.
Now the Note3 seems more like an upgrade, an upgrade in terms of stability, power, RAM, and android power. plus the S Pen of course.
Having used it for like 2 weeks now, I am a hard user - I have seen no issues whatsoever till now. The phone works and flies flawlessly across apps when multitasking, switching to and fro S Pen is seamless. even the fast charge takes least time to charge the device till full.
So all in all, I find this is a very stable, very fast and better than any iOS spawns.
Regards and enjoy this phone

I wrote in my opening remarks that this is THE first phone, form any brand since 1988, I have ever owned that has had a problem including numerous Samsung's in the past three years. Guess its just my turn. EVERY device makes a lemon on times. This is to be expected.
If I keep the gear on the problem goes with regard the S-voice. I have yet again, for the fifth time, reset to factory settings today and lets see what happens. If it plays up again I will take it back and see what can be done. problem is in doing that the store just send all such devices back to Samsung's repair representative and I would be without the phone for maybe a month. After sales in this country is abysmal and getting worse as the financial crisis bites even deeper here.
I shall press on for now and see what happens.:good:
Regards.
Sync issues
Hi all,
I am experiencing this wierd bug on my note 3 with syncing of my google account. Device automatically disables sync for few of my google apps like Drive, Gmail, Calendar. Even if I enable sync, after a few hours the sync itself disables. Please note that this issue is not for all of my google apps, for eg. chrome and other google apps dont have this issue.
Does anyone know if something I should enable or do somewhere to resolve this annoyance?
Thanks
