My phone suddenly went bonkers this afternoon, didn't have any signal and the IMEI was blank. Using stock rom KI8 with speedmod. It was running fine for days but I don't know why it did what it did for no reason at all.
Good thing I backed up my /efs folder with an app. I had a problem with restoring my efs backup using the .img but for some reason with the .tar it works (thank God I backed up using both ways).
I'm wondering why it just suddenly did this on its own? Wasn't doing anything extraordinary with it. Odd.
The reason why a backup is so important. I don't even want to see a service center. I take my precautions accordingly.

Good to hear that you managed to resolve everything
But maybe just keep it to one post, yeah?

Haven't resolved everything yet actually. Why is it that using the img file to restore doesn't work. It just gets stuck. Though the .tar backup works.

My bad, I was under the impression you did.
So you say that your .tar backup works, yeah? What exactly do you mean by that? Or are you saying that you've managed to restore your IMEI (using the .tar), but still want to know why it happened?
If so, there honestly could be a plethora of reasons, including rouge apps, a ROM dev. who didn't check their work, etc. etc.
If you still need to fix it / want someone to share some of the more technical information, try contacting Odia, I know he is able to restore IMEI's without backups, so he'd probably be your best bet.

Thanks for pointing me to the right direction.
Let me set the facts straight. I was able to restore it using a tar backup. Initially I used an img to try to restore but that failed. Good thing that during the time I backed up my efs I was amused with the app and made both img and tar backups just for kicks.

I have come across at least 10 people now that the below method of restoring your phone, after trying EVERY other way that you can think of, works for
I can not, and will not, guarantee that this will work for you, but, it does seem to work when all else fails..
Now, i can expect of you to have tried at least a few of the following before doing this:
- a CWM Data Wipe
- a CWM Backup Restore
- a (EC07/DL17) clean rom flash (from within CWM)
- a (EC07/DL17) ODIN Restore (Be Careful, heed and read my warning i posted within this same thead before doing this)
IF you have exhausted your creativity with trying to fix your phone, try this:
First, download the following:
Heimdall Frontend: https://github.com/downloads/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32.zip
Samsung Fascinate's Stock Param.lfs: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18259212/Phone/stock_param.lfs
Continuum Original Recovery [EC07]: http://www.mediafire.com/?pz8p4axk114092j
Continuum Original Param.lfs [EC07]: http://www.mediafire.com/?7isd5m1dbze6a0t
7-zip (or Winrar for the losers ): You find it!
I am going to make this part quick
Put the phone is Download mode, and install the driver for Heimdall with ziag.exe within that zip... (you will need to check options --> list all devices).
Put the fascinate param.lfs into the param.lfs section.
Extract the original recovery with 7-zip (or other such programs)
Put the extracted file in the Recovery Section in Heimdall.
Click Start
From there, the program should flash the files, and your phone should reboot... You should see scrolling yellow text, and then.... Rejoice
Your phone should be working okay now, but Just to be safe, make sure you restore the original param.lfs before you get too comfortable
If you experience any difficulties, just post them down there vvv ... Again, this is only to be attempted if you have tried everything else
First I can say this method works to get it back up and running (see threads below on what I went through.) With that trailblazer. I haven't re-activated this phone yet because I'm waiting to make sure it works this time. I wanted to turn on wifi to verify I have root (i.e setcpu, titanium, something to that affect.) I can see the wireless signals but I can't connect, any ideas. I would like to have this "stock" version working with a workable nandroid in case, but I guess I dont have to.
edit: you may also want to put this in development instead, probably doesn't matter but I look there first personally for fixes.
yeah, i have heard of this issue with other people...... What other people did to finally fix it was restore a Nandroid backup.... In your case, you can't do that
I would suggest getting blue cwm up and working, and flashing any of the Clean Roms within it.... Making sure you do a data wipe... That's all i can really say :|

He means efs folder. If you flashed the initial cm7 there should be a folder called backup on your SD card. Inside all your IMEI information should be there. Search the forums for more information on this problem. There are SEVERAL other users that have experienced this problem as well as resolved it.

If you look at the very bottom of the first post it's the instructions on how are you going to restore it.
If I were you Id make sure you lost your efs data.
Did you check the /efs folder to see if its empty?
Okay i tried the busybox command and it doesnot work.. i also tried thre others
Is your phone unlocked?
I have some files here which you would just put your efs folder then it will restore it for you. But i really can't remember the exact process.
I tried doing that with linda file manager but it said read only... kinda sucks cuz that would have been easy... anyways.. i have all those files on the root of my sd... i also tried modifying the code by adding /sdacard/ before /nv_data.bin to select were the file is (root of sdcard)
Don't edit anything on your original efs folder.
Ok, i have the files uploaded. But before anything please don't blame me in case whatever happens to your phone. I used this in the past because my IMEI also got screwed. It's your decision whether you're going to use it or not.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23360211/insert_efs_save.zip
Here's how i remember it.
1. So you there's an efs folder there and you replace that efs folder with your original efs folder. Again, your going to replaced it not put inside it.
2. You have to be rooted of course, and connect your phone while on USB debug.
3. There's a file called in insert efs folder.bat you click it and it's going to show you what to do.
4. Pray that it would work.
Again, please don't blame me. It's your phone so don't do this if you're not comfortable doing it. But hey, you've got nothing to lose.
Wait what rom are you using right now?
Im using cm7 n im gonna try that now
Try to go back to stock first if you're going to try it, back up your efs folder to your computer.
Wait stock as in jfd? And i already have my efs backed up, when i flashed the initial cm7 it backed it up... but if i go stock i can get everything back to normal by just simply doing an odin right? Cuz when i do go back to stock, i plan to just go use simply honey hkney instead...

Odin plus JFD + the right pit file also check the re-partition. Then root and restore your efs.
So I ran this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915617
and it said that I had no rsa keys, so I went to my first nandroid before I switched to a custom rom nandroid backups, and a wimax.(my phones host ID I think).img existed in the folder. So I restored it.
After it was done I ran the app again, and it said that my keys were still not there. Afterwards, I went back to recovery and went to backup/restore and choose advance restore and checked the things I could restore, wimax wasn't among them, even though the file was there.
So my question: Is there anything I can do to restore them? I do have a backup.
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried using 4G? Maybe it just isn't reporting back correctly. Was your first nandroid done with the recovery the OP posted in the perm root thread where you had to manually backup the wimax keys or did you download rom manager from the market and install your recovery that way which backs them up automatically?
I have tried using 4G, but it doesn't work, I've tried other backups as well to no avail.
And it was with clockworkmod I made my backup, not manually

You could try the 2.2 ruu then reroot, maybe that would fix things don't know if the keys are individual device specific.

Tried it, but my rsa keys are still missing. Anything else to do, I have them backed up with clockwork, it just won't recognize them or restore them.
I wonder if you could push them with adb?

I think I would pm bcnice or someone from the perm root thread who seem knowledgable about such things. I only mention bcnice because in his original root instructions he had us manually back them up so I assume he probably knows how to restore the backups. I have a feeling many people would be willing to help but they probably don't frequent this board too often.
On TWRP Nandroid Backup there are 7 options that can be backed up: Boot,System,Data,Cache,Recovery,EFS and Preload. The 1st 3 are always checked but I was wondering which of the other 4 options do most people check when doing a Nandriod?
Thanks
Boot,System,Data,
that is ALL
You might want to backup efs once just in case you lose it down the road. But I've never had to use it

That is a given, but is it not needed every backup. backup efs for sure once, and put it in a safe place.
Thanks for input guys. So it it just makes the Nandroid a bigger file with all checked but not really necessary.

How are we backing up EFS? TWRP? Some other app?
You don't need to backup efs,
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
but yes you can back it up with twrp
Have things changed from the Nexus 5 days? I recall the recommendation with the N5 was to make an EFS backup in case of IMEI problems. Different now on the N6P?
I do it no matter what but didn't have a problem with corrupted EFS until OnePlus One.
During flashing to stock on OPO, EFS got messed up. Luckily I had a EFS backup handy so I flashed it back and my phone was good to go again. I tried restoring EFS backup I made in TWRP but it did no good. Since I always make backup using terminal (which gives you two files). I restored the two files to get working EFS and IMEI back.
However on N6P, I couldn't use the same method. Either the EFS partition is different than before or there was something else since I got "permission denied" error. I am also looking for method to backup EFS before its messed up.
Looks like a poor soul already ran into a corrupted EFS
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/efs-corrupted-stock-unrooted-t3236513
Should be fine for him to refresh stock, efs was only an issue on Samsung devices because they were stupid enough to have the entire part in an area that could be wiped, no other manufacturers do or did that. I found out first hand with the Nexus s, but the 5 and so on were fine if you just refreshed the system image
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
enaybee above says he had problems on a 1+1 too. I don't plan on restoring EFS ever, but I'd still like to take a backup if possible, just in case. I just don't know what's reliable, I know TWRP has an option and I used it on my old N5 but who knows if you can actually restore from it should you ever need to.

It isn't a matter of the EFS partition being wiped, it's a matter of it becoming corrupt, which can happen randomly. You shouldn't be giving advice like this if you don't fully understand the situation.

I hope a restore works, but I'm not brave enough to try it. There's a report above that a restore in TWRP didn't work on a 1+1 phone. Still good to have this TWRP backup, until we learn more.

I suggest making a copy of that backup to your computer or dropbox, gdrive, not just on the phone. The sdcard may end up wiped by accident when you play with TWRP, etc.
