[Q] Mobile network issue with Virtuous Unity 2.37.0 - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here are the odds:
1).Whenever I exit a wifi area or a no-radio area, MT4G picks up the mobile network signal ridiculously slow, if you look into the status bar, it says the mobile network is turning on...sometimes I got lucky, but usually it takes more than 1 min or ever...
2).Things can turn even worse that, I lost call signal and mobile network signal at the same time when I exit a no-radio area or wifi covered area. No bars, no G/E/3G/H, AT THE SAME TIME.
3). Sometimes, even if you see bars there and 3G icon, you can't dial or receive any call, it disconnect immediately.
I called TMO, they said signal in my area is fine and they even re-registered my SIM card. I did a full wipe and re-installed Virtuous Unity 2.37.0, good for a day or two, and the problem kicked back in.
BTW, I'm on Radio 26.09.04.26_M
I also uninstalled some suspicious apps that I just installed or updated within the days I first ran into this problem. No luck...
I really love this ROM, anybody could help?

frustrated with hd2 losing signal

I have trying to use the HD2 over the last 3 days and getting real problems with intermittent signal loss.
I know i have low signal from the mobile operator in some parts of my home but that has never been a problem with other HTC phones i used before. If the signal was too weak it would just drop out but come back if i moved a bit.
With the HD2 once the signal indicator turns red it stays that way even if i move to a strong signal area.
The weird thing is sometimes i would leave the phone sitting in one place with four bars and then minutes later it would show up with no signal and i can't receive calls.
Even stranger is that in all these cases where there is no apparent signal, all i need to do is press the send button to try making a call and the signal "magically" re-appears and all is fine. I've tried at least four differnt radios as well as the energy ROM ... no change.
Any ideas ? this is reaallly frustrating!!!!!!
do the problems resemble what I experienced here?:

change radio ROM, well experiment with several of them by trial and error (read the sticky/tutorial first).
OR
buy an indoor signal booster.
Well, regardless of the radio version ive had really odd intermitant service.
the best way ive found to help this is turn off 3G / HSDPA
Doing this forces the device to remain on GPRS, it means the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer and it doent drop the connection every time the device feels like trying to connect with HSDPA or drops it for no apparent reason.

it seem that you were losing data connection .... i'm a lot worse off ... i lose data AND voice .. all connectivity ... so i don't receive calls
as i said the weird thing is as soon as press send to initiate a call, cthe signal bars come back and everything works fine!!
as i said, stop 3G from working, when switching between the two due to what ever reason the HD2 decides to drop it will kill your connection, voice and all until it switches back. there is an issue with 3G and im wondering if its everyone or just folk using TMOUS radio and thus recieving the extra RAM
To disable 3G/HSDPA to test,
Open Comm Manager and click on Phone (not the on/off switch) to go to phone options. Scroll to bottom and select BAND. Switch network type from Auto to GSM.
3G/HSDPA is only needed for internet surfing. Time, weather, stock updates and email downloads don't really benefit from it. So turning it off this way will make these type data connections go through the EDGE network which is plenty fast enough for it. When you need to surf the net, go back and switch it to Auto and you will get 3G or faster speeds for that.

If its just 3G then its probable just T-Mobile or then again a Hardware/Firmware issue
try a different ROM, Radio
I have this same issue I running a T-Mobile USA (using radio 2.12 but then again it was doing it on 2.15 as well) and it just drops all connectivity and says no service I have to search the network again.
My phone is unlocked I don't know if that might have anything to do with it as well
I've had this problem on my HD2 since i got it.
Edge (E), works but slow as all get out. 2-4s ping times or time outs. 3G (and when i say 3G i mean when it says 3G in the status bar) doesn't work at all. HSDPA (H) works great, WHEN it stays that way, which it doesn't.
It can switch between 3G to H every 10 seconds.
And i'm using it for tethering primarily, which makes working painful. Lose your VPN and SSH sessions constantly. Some days it's ok. But most, horrible. btw, i'm in the Denver area.
I've tried stock roms and custom roms (primarily Energy). All radios. Nothing fixes it!
This is the only thing I don't like about my HD2 and/or t-mobile. And it's a whopper. I'm almost ready to get another phone or carrier, depending on what's causing this.

I have 4 HD2's with one having the problem you describe and have come to the conclusion it's a hardware issue. Probably a cold solder joint on the antenna lead.
In WinMo or Android the signal bars jump all over the place but the signal level in 'about phone' shows a constant signal even though the bars show nothing. I don't drop to many calls but miss more than a few incoming. I travel for 5-8 hrs in the same area everyday and very familiar of good and bad areas of reception. I have tried stock/cooked ROM's/Radio's with no noticeable difference.
I'll probably send mine in to HTC to be looked at.

Well, welcome to the club mate, same here, I can't barely make phone calls, everytime I grab the phone it loses all bars ... don't know why thou, also I've got this annoyin bug with simcard as well. Everytim I restart the phone it tells me simcard has changed, if I tap on it, the com.android.settings app crashes ...
weird
2g and wifi have improved a lot for me...
froyo does seem to get a bit confused over picking 3g/2g in weak signal areas....
Please try the following:
1. Go into connection settings for your mobile network (not wifi), save settings without changing anything.
2. Restart your router and let your legend relocate it
3. Restart phone
I found these tips from google on related issues and it actually hepled my most immediate wifi problems, namely it spontaneously crapping out for no reason and could help yours as well.
Please try it and let me know if it helped, even though it sounds far-fetched.
Hello
Did you tried to boot in bootloader mode, then doing a CLEAR DATA ? (It will erase everything on the phone excepted 2.2, so backup everything:sms, contacts, apks)

I cant hold 4g for ****... Should I take it back?

Alright. I cant hold a 4g signal long at all. Funny thing is my dad has an evo and 4g, his holds forever. Should I de-root my phone and take it back or could this be normal. As in some phones can pull the signal better than others?

Sounds like a phone specific issue.
You could try updating your radio to the newest WiMax version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
If that doesn't work then I would get a replacement.
It's not difficult to flash your radios and the chance of bricking your phone is so small. You really should update your radio/WiMax at least in my opinion. Then maybe the PRI/PRL. Just check Calk's thread and you'll be fine
I did both of them and nothing still.
alright this is whack. I de-root my phone and I get 4g back..

TRY THIS (i picked this up off the DEV forums back in July and works perfectly for me and my buddies)
First call sprint and ask them for you MSL code (6 digits) they will give you the code no problem.
TURN OFF YOUR 4G *** MAKE SURE 4G IS OFF ***
1. Dial ##3282# hit edit enter the MSL code sprint gave you and click on Wimax.
2. Scroll down to WiMax_Entry_RX(RSSI)(dbm) - click on it and change the value from -89 to anything from -100 to -110 (this will allow your phone to connect to weaker 4G signals). Mine is set at -100.
3. Scroll down to WiMax_Exit_Delay(s) - change that value to 15 (which is 15 seconds) so you will stay connected to 4G longer when the signal drops and you wont get dumped right into 3G.
4. Then hit menu and commit modifications - you phone should reset - if those two dont help just PM me and i can walk through some of the other tweaks in that menu.
YMMV but i have done this to my EVO and 3 of my buddies and it works great as you can pick up a 4G signal where others cannot and you can stay on the 4G network longer than anyone else when the signal drops.

don't you get better transfer rate on a strong 3G signal than a very weak 4G signal?
what's the point of staying connected to 4G longer when the signal is gone? if there's no signal, there's no signal...why wait longer for it to connect to 3G so you can keep doing what you were doing?

+1 on this. Also check out the thread to connect to 4G sooner (I'll dig up the link here after lunch if no one else does)
I only get to use 4g while on the interstate, but there were huge patches of it where I would get disconnected. Now I can drive all the way to work, connected, without a drop.

Since you're rooted you can just download msl reader from the market instead of having to call sprint and all that.

You're right, you can download faster on a strong 3G signal; however, if you are downloading a large file (got ROMs?) if you are mobile and come across a dip in reception and your signal is dropped...so is your download. Now in my case on the interstate, I would drop out of 4G twice on the way to work for aboutfive miles each time. I set my minimum connection to -98 db and it never drops the connection and I never have less than one bar. If it has nothing it will only be for a couple seconds if that, but I never have an interrupted connection.
whoa thanks guys. long story short. I was going to take it back so S-off'ed it and derooted it. I said Hmm 4g is now on... So then I rerooted and from flashing the PC36IMG file to deroot my evo, it must have changed my boot loader to 2.10 from 2.02...
None the less Its all good now. I just finished the root and when I got into the rom ( sprint lovers, its inlcuded with the savior method ) I had 4g, I then nand'ed and Now It just rebooted and IM in 4g with 2 bars on the 4g icon.
My dad is rockin Myn's warm and he has 4g all day. Oringally on my first root I did Fresh and I think that crunked up my ****. Weird thing is that I held onto my RSAs and MACs all matched, just didnt want to fire up. I did try to update radios etc and nothing.
And the other thing is that where I live is a 4g in buildings area, so I know something was acting up. Im going to flash Myns and see what I get.
And is that 4G fix really worth it?
Yes

cool, thanks for the explanation. makes sense that you don't want to drop your downloads...are there any download utilities out there that could help with this, like the ones for regular PCs? it could be very useful to have an app that will resume a download when the connection comes back.
anyway, thanks for posting those settings and how to get in there, could come in very handy in the future.
in theory that would make sense but i can still download at 2 mb/s on 1 bar or less using 4G in NYC where as if i was on 3G i would have full strength and would probably only hit 1 mb/s

The only client-side apps that handle downloads for me are the torrent apps, but that's just inherent in how torrents work. I haven't come across a download manager like you describe. The download management in Android will wait for a connection if you lose signal using the same radio, preserving the integrity of the file, but it doesn't handle the switching from 3G to 4G well in my experience...it always drops the download.

ACS 4G issues

Please help! I'm on ACS Frozen rom with ec05 modem and I love the rom but and my 4g signal keeps cutting off. Sometimes it says 4g disconnected at the notification bar and sometimes the 4g signal has 2 or 3 bars but i still cant connect to the internet. Other times just it goes idle even when I'm using the web. I have to toggle the 4g on and off and it starts working again for about 10 or 15 minutes. It doesnt matter how strong the signal is, I still drop connection. My 3g speeds have also dropped down to about .25 mbps DN (used to get about 1.3 mbps average). I am not sure what it is that's causing these issues. Bad modem (hardware)? issues with the rom?
I went back to stock ec05 for a few days and the issue was still there but happened less often. Is there something wrong with the phone itself? MysteryEmotionz if you are reading this and you can help I would greatly appreciate it. I use the web a lot on my epic an dropping connection every 10 minutes is really annoying. Can someone help please?
And happy 4th of july to all
Also running SRF, had minor problems with speeds, but not connectivity. I flashed EE03 and have had very good luck with it, including connections where I previously got no signal at all.
Also there is a thread here about changing settings on WiMax to allow connection to lower signals and less delay I'm reconnecting. You need the MSL, but that helped too.
Good luck with whatever you end up doing.
Please excuse any erors or typos as this massage was sent from my mobil device.

[LOOKING FOR A FIX] DATA drops

Hi guys. I've looked around and it seems that data drops are fairly common as of lately. I would like to find out what exactly the problem is.
Here's my situation. Data drops first occurred about a week ago, I was running RBJ and Harsh kernel with hsic fix in. Mainly it happens when exiting wifi range. Went back to nandroid with RBJ/Bricked and it was fine. Tried harsh again issue reappeared. Tried flashing pre hsic kernels and problem persisted. Full wipe, dirty flashes, different kernels etc. Problem is still there intermittently. Now I'm running stock everything and it seems ok for now, but I did experience it once. I guess more testing is needed. I'd think it could be carrier issues, especially as Orange UK confirmed they are having problems at (that would include T-Mobile) but my wife is on the same carrier and doesn't seem to have this problem.
So what you say? What rom/kernel combo you had issue on and on which one you didn't? Can anyone see a pattern?
Problem first appeared:
RBJ
HARSH
Orange UK
West London
As suggested per _ICE_
Post these please.
Hardware: rev_x (10 or 11) <-- go to boot loader to check

Description: One of the below or other
1. There is 3g or H sign above signal bar but the tiny arrow pointing up is constantly showing and you can't get access to internet ?
2. There is no 3g or H sign above signal bar but you have blue signal bars ?
3. No 3g or H, grey signal bars and all of the sudden signal bars dias appear and reappear

no1 and greyed out icon (no connection to google servers which atomatically mean no connection). The rest exactly as you described in that line.
Simply everyone put the same commits in their kernels and therefore caused them all to fail. Those HSIC fix broke other stuff too which is why everyone was reporting the samething. They've been reverted in CM and Franco and other kernels.

I'd agree that it was the case if it didn't keep happening after going back to complete stock via flashing images.
I wonder if something happened to sim along the way?

I doubt it is a sim issue. I get the same thing when I am in different areas of my house. Living room is great but the master bedroom and media room give me data drops. Have you tested to see if maybe this is the same thing happening to you? Certain areas causing it?
My phone will have full bars and show the H but out of nowhere I see the data drop, buts its only in certain areas. It has never happened in the living room where I spend most of my time. Oh and I am not on WiFi because I disconnected Time Warners crappy service and am waiting for Verizon to come set up if anyone is wondering why I was using data instead of Wifi .

Are you on stock?
And areas I'm affected in are a lot larger. I'm talking 25miles here.

Same issue here, it's driving me nuts.
The problem is, I have full service and with a data connection with a H.
Whenever I use an app or anything that would use the data connection, it wouldn't work. It just won't work. It does this, sometimes and sometimes in certain areas.
Say I have full service with a strong data connection, I'll use instagram and refresh, the arrows for data connection won't be there and nothing will show.
It does this constantly. I'm running the stock rom with Franco's r23 kernel. It's been doing this with the stock kernel as well. Using T-Mobile in NYC
It's quite annoying, and I really don't want to wipe and or flash another rom as it happens once in a while.

Well for me it's like 90% of the time.
Edit. Now this is interesting... http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40514

Its a network thing I believe plus some kind of android issue . I had data drops on galaxy nexus , most of the times its the way once described it in 1 but occasionally the way in 2 or 3. Baaa on giffgaff network I had data but when screen was off I had gray bars.

Read the link above. Something doesn't play well together. From the logs it looks like problem lies in loading apn.

I have no other provider sim with data to test it. Will test wife's Orange sim in a day or two, just to eliminate sim card as a reason.

Testing time
*#*#4636#*#*
Set to LTE/GSM/CDMA AUTO ( PRL) seems to make data work normal. Still testing though.
Give it a go.

I only noticed the data drop issue recently, but that might be because I'm on wifi the vast majority of the time. Undercover - I'm experiencing basically the same issue as you are, however my data signal seems to reconnect itself after about 15-20 seconds.
Running stock rooted ROM, motley kernel here, UVed quite a bit, though I don't know if that would cause any problems. Will try changing some APN settings tomorrow and see what happens
When having been connected to wifi overnight and leaving the wifi area, the phone does not switch over to mobile data. The signal bars stay grey.
I have to toggle airplane mode, and then it connects fine. Another fix is to search for provider and reconnect to the network (takes longer obviously)
Is this the same bug?

i think its an android issue
had this problem on my htc desire and now i have it on my n4
but it occured since 4.0
I seem to have problem with both data and also wifi.
Right now I am looking at my phone connected to wifi and its all grayed out and streaming music stopped. It seems that problem is worse when I have same time connected to bluetooth.
Something is seriously wrong with the new Android.l
No problems here. I'm on T-Mobile if that helps. Cm10.1 and Franco r28.

I get dropped/inconsistent signals as well but only in certain areas of my house or certain parts of the city I live in. I'll have a few bars of H and then poof no signal. I can almost predict when I'm going to run in to that little problem because my loading times and such will be all around slower. Even though I should have a fast connection according to my signal bars. During times when I'm experiencing fast download speeds my signal never falters. PS I'm completely stock, not unlocked, not rooted.
