[Q] Importing Galaxy Note - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hello guys,
I am thinking about importing Galaxy Note and using it here on ATT in a family plan.
I am also planning to get an IPhone 4S contract phone first and then sell that to someone and use the money to purchase the Note.
Could someone please guide me on how can I sell a contract phone (IPhone 4S) and how can I use the imported phone in my contract plan.
Also would IPhone 4S give me best results, or will phones like galaxy 2 could also be sold for decent price (there are few sites which give 100$ off on galaxy s 2)
I have few more questions.
My imported phone wont have warranty? Updating it to ICS (whenever it comes) would be quite tough, getting screen protectors-cases would be tough.
Do you people really think that Galaxy Note is that better than S2.
To be honest, after a first few days, I don't think S pen would be of much use.
Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks
pannna

I just did what you are asking so to answer your questions:
1. Buy the iPhone 4S and sell it sealed on Craiglist for around $500-$550. Too many resellers are already out there asking $600+ and you'll sit on it for too long.
2. Purchase the Galaxy Note from eBay or online store.
3. Take Note into AT&T store and get a sim card + have them update your data plan to smartphone and you're done.
4. Note has no warranty for those of us importing the device. You'd have to send it back to the country of origin for warranty servicing. I plan to buy a 3rd party warranty to cover it (ensquared or whatever).
5. ICS will come to the device, Samsung confirmed it and why would it be tough? Its a simple update.
I think Note is way better than the Galaxy S2. I had an AT&T S2 and returned it after using it nearly a month, its a super nice phone but its no Note.

I don't think you have to worry about ICS updates. You will find them here first anyway and since your phone would be compatible with most of the devices used here it would be not tough at all.
As for the S Pen it is something you learn to use (or not). If you get used to it it opens up a range of nee possibilities that comes in quite handy. For example I use it a lot for annotating mails and store them in my notes database. Or if I need to prepare some info I can just cut out info from web pages and paste it nicely in a note and add my own notes. Or if you want to jot down some notes at a meeting.. it is something you can do now on your phone
Or picture meeting a girl in a bar, asking her for her phone number and you take out your note and write the number down with your s pen. She would be sooooo impressed (lol hail nerds)

I'm rolling over my unlimited data plan to the new at&t contract. Is there any other way to do this other than changing to smart phone plan ?

Just saw that amazon sells lockfree Notes in the states. Posted a link in another thread.

[Q] Buying i9000

Hello, I recently destroyed (mostly by accident ) my iPhone 3gs and have been trying to decide on a new phone. After searching for awhile I believe I want the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant i9000 from Bell.
I am a Telus customer and have read quite a bit on XDA and some other sites about unlocking and am under the impression it's not too difficult to do on your own. I've unlocked a couple devices before (HTC Diamond and an iPhone 3g for a friend) and it went smoothly.
I've looked at the iPhone 4s and they are impressive however the antenna issue is impossible to over look.
Mainly what I am wondering is am I going to be happy going from an iPhone 3gs to the Samsung i9000. The phone is gorgeous and everything I have seen from it has impressed me. For some reason however (perhaps because I was so happy with my iPhone, speed, ease of use, etc.) I feel like I am going to miss my iPhone. I realize Android is superior to iOS and is much more flexible and I use Google for everything so that's a huge plus in my eyes.
My second question I suppose would be where can I buy an i9000? Can I just go into the Bell store and buy one contract free? Do I have to tell them I am going to Telus? Will they make me buy a SIM card or anything of that sort?
Lastly.. The i9000 on the Bell.ca website claims a 499.95 price off contract. eBay, Amazon and pretty much anywhere else I look is saying upwards of 600 dollars for one. This is unlocked of course. But is it being unlocked actually worth 100 - 200 dollars more? If so I might get into the unlocking business..
Hope some people can shed some light on my issues! Thanks in advance!
Hey, i got mine SGS from Costco (Montreal) at 498,50 $ (bell, no contract) and im on Fido. got free unlock with app. you can get free from android market. Its an amaising phone.
Thanks for the quick reply, I don't have any Costcos near me but I'll try and find a Futureshop or Best Buy (been reading up a bit).
I would also like to ask another question about the attenuation on the phone. I've heard it has a bit of a signal issue when held. Anybody else experience this?

Best AT&T android phone W/O contract?

Hello XDA!
I'm currently looking for a new Android phone to work on AT&T. I currently have an Aria and love Android to death, but I'm looking to get something a little faster and a little bit bigger.
I'd love to get something that won't extend my contract, even though it ends in July (I'm impatient, lol), and something that is fairly cheap (sub 200).
I'm currently interested in the galaxy s phones, the captivate and vibrant, and am interested to know what other phones I should be considering. Throw some pointers my way!
Thanks a bunch you guys, I know you can help me out.

This. The galaxy s ii is by far the best of the Android phones available, and would be the most logical purchase..
If you are buying off contract I recommend the Galaxy S II international because that one gets updates way faster the American variates and already has an established dev community
Yeah the SGSII is definitely up there in the "want" category for sure, but I'm thinking something a little cheaper. When my contract comes up this summer, it'll be a whole 'nother animal
But are there any phones out there that have gotten cheap enough to pick up, but can still handle everything? Like <$200?
I'm just getting tired of the Aria...
Sgs i9000 for budget concerns. Still the best single core android phone

Why would you buy a phone without a contract on At&t? It would make sense if you weren't forced to have a data plan, but At&t will PUT A MANDATORY DATA PLAN on your account even if you are out of contract and you paid the full price of the phone yourself.
So now you own a GSM phone and the only other U.S GSM carrier is T-mobile, but T-mobile won't be around for long, so your phone will only work on At&T.

Should I buy the Note 4 while I'm here in China?

Chinese octacore note 4 = $927.61 USD (5700 RMB)
Okay, so I really need you guys to carry me here, I'm here in China backpacking, and Note 4 is for sale everywhere.. I can buy one in any Samsung, or electronics vendor right now if I want.. That said I'm really unsure if I should buy it here, or wait till I go back to the US in a few days.. I'm not sure if I want the Octacore or Quad. btw if anyone wants me to take a video or do any testing of anything here on the octacores, theres all the Note 4s you could ever want here, I've notice at least 2 different firmwares so far on these babies.
Internet is very unstable here, and most American sites are blocked or just dont connect, so my ability to research is limited to a very small selection of sites, so please excuse my outdated and lacking knowledge.
IF the $200 dollar trade in promotion works via Samsung, are we able to get BestBuy's $200 dollar store credit + Samsung's $200 Cash Back? or does going the BestBuy route void Samsungs offer?
Will the Octacore have the badass audio chip the s3 and s4 international had? (cause thats cool)
I cant even load any pages here to research.. besides some obvious smaller dev stuff; with Xposed in the game now, will there be any significant support differences between octa vs quad?
*at this time i do not have a carrier, when I return to US, I will look for a carrier (probably tmobile/att, or some third party that uses their networks, gotta look at what 2014 phone plans look like)
Also reallllllly unrelated but felt like mentioning, the LED is far weaker on the note 4 than the s3/s4 (@ flashlight apps)~
sooooo im gonna throw this post out here, go climb a mountain and hopefully have an internet connection again at some point before i hop on a plane, love you guys <33333

Be very careful to make sure you know exactly which model you are purchasing. Strong chance you won't have many of the LTE bands you would need for service once you return to the US.

Anyone upgrading to the S8+?

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone on here is giving up their N7 for the S8+? Most specs look to be better, with the exception of the S-Pen of course.
Any idea when the N8 will be out? Though they did mention that they will be re-releasing the N7 as refurbs.
Debating about the S8+ at this point.
I love the N7, but who knows when the N8 will be out, so debating...
Called T-Mbile to find out if I still get a refund and they said YES 2 days ago. They said I would get back the downpayment/tax and whatever the monthly charges were up until the day when I called, so it came out to close to 400, but they said it would be in credits to the account, which I am fine with either way. Today I chatted with them online instead of calling, and they advised that the recall was finished and that refunds are no longer being given, but recommended I see a local store, so now I am not sure what to do.
I'll wait for the N8 and I think I heard people say the N8 would be out at the end of the year. Don't quote me on that.
If they are re releasing the N7. As long as it is still a beast of a phone like it was on original release. I will be happy with that. At a cheaper price of course. The pen spoiled me that's for sure

That is kind of what is holding me back, the lack of the S-Pen, but if you were to ask me how often do I use it, I'd say about 5 times since I got the phone in my hand haha
I like the luxury of having it if I need/want to use it, but do not find myself using it that much unfortunately.

I will head to the store today to see if I like the s8+ or not. the only thing really holding me back would be the fact that i wont be able to jump to the N8 when it comes out since it will be less than a year or 50% of the phone, so thats really the one and only thing. S8 is technically better in terms of specs I think. It is a bit more narrow but bigger screen, but no s-pen.
Eh, decisions, decisions lol
You'll get your credit, only thing is if you were in Jump on Demand then it gets voided and you have to start a different jump program.
It sucks, I didn't wanna have to get rid of JOD. I'm debating if I want to or not now.

Yep, I was thinking of that too, but I was originally on Jump 2.0 and did not want to switch to JoD. I dont remember the reasoning why I DIDNT want to switch, but i'm fine with J2.0 because I only jump ones a year either way to the next best samsung lol
Note 7 to Galaxy S8+ Jump on Demand
I've been a lurker on XDA until now; I will describe my time with the Note 7 and switch to the (pre-ordered) S8+.
I obtained my Note 7 shortly after it was released a second time. Confident that the batteries were fine despite allegations of a second round of explosions, I decided to keep my device. I downloaded (and pointedly resisted updating) EZ Disabler Pro, and promptly disabled updates as users on this forum warned of upcoming updates that would limit battery life, and functionality. The app and update restrictions have been in place since November 2016; therefore I still possess a Note 7 device which charges to 100% and more or less performs the way it was intended to at the time of release.
I use my S-Pen constantly. Smart Select is a tool I use multiple times, every day, and I will be quite sad to let it go as I upgrade to the Galaxy S8+. However, having a supported device which will receive updates and is not banned on commercial aircraft is worth the trade in until the Note 8 pops in October of this year.
T-Mobile has made the transition difficult. Any time I call about billing issues or service agreements, representatives ask me about the Note 7 and seem to be unable to process requests on my line because of the phone's status as a recalled device. The first time I called into to pre-order the Galaxy S8+ and trade in my Note 7 through Jump on Demand, I was refused. The representative informed me that I would be unable to complete this trade in due to the Note 7's status, and that I must continue through a standard Jump upgrade, which would put me on an Equipment Installment Plan (EIP). I firmly believe in technology leasing due to the financially unfeasible process of owning the latest devices, and was not willing to take the EIP route. Instead, I ended my call with T-Mobile and decided to do some research on the JoD lease.
In my research I found that as a lessee, I do not own my Note 7. The Note 7 belongs to T-Mobile, and they must take it back and continue my program with a new phoneas long as the trade in device meets the physical requirements for return. (My phone is in mint condition) I also found that pre-orders are covered under JoD, and then was confused as to why I was being refused.
After learning this, I called T-Mobile again, in the early morning hours (I'm in EST US) at about 2am. Turns out that standard customer service representative in the US are just lazy and unwilling to do research. My rep was based in the Philippines and while she initially had responses very similar to earlier reps I had spoken to, upon being asked direct questions about my JoD lease, she took the time (spent about 75 mins on the phone with her) to look through documentation, click through menus on her employee terminal and find the option of continuing my JoD lease, and pre-ordering the S8+ through that portal.
TLDR;
If you're being told that you can't continue JoD because you have a Note 7 and would like to trade in for the S8(+), ask direct questions about your lease until the reps stop being bums and actually go through the documentation. IT IS POSSIBLE TO PRE-ORDER THE S8+ ON JoD COMING FROM A NOTE 7. They will take the first opportunity to hand you off to another rep or force you through the method that they are most familiar with. Keep in mind, newer reps may not know anything about JoD since the program has long been unavailable to new customers. Foreign reps in my experience (whether it be for billing issues, accidental charges, line adjustments, etc) seem to care more your situation/satisfaction than the average US rep.
P.S:
Be warned, JoD is no longer available to new or existing customers. If you leave JoD now, it will not be possible to get back on such a lease. JoD lessees are grandfathered to the program.

I own my Note 7 outright, paid in full. I have no intentions of getting the S8, I'll wait for the next Note. I do, however, intend to return my Note 7 for a full refund and get the Note 8 without having to pay too much more. I'd love to have somebody at Magenta try to tell me the recall is over. Fact is, it is not! There is no expiration date and they can't invent one!

I recently took the plunge and finally returned my note 7. No T-Mobile stores I went to would accept it saying the recall had expired, smh. I eventually ended up doing the return through Samsung and got a better deal. Phone and 2 cases plus the extra $25 from Samsung netted me back $999. I'll gladly take that in a check than credits from T-Mobile.

Like the other carriers they were compensated by Samsung for all Note 7's. That's money they intend to keep, Magenta can be scandalous! Since mine is paid in full it won't go down that way when I return mind, I'll make sure if it!

I've been instructed to return my Note7 at a store within two weeks of receiving my new device. I just got the S8+ some 12-13 hours ago. I have not yet returned the Note7.
I'm currently in possession of both the S8+ and the Note7. They're quite similar actually; I think the upgrade is far more dramatic from the S7 or even the S7 edge.

Thanks for the info, I went to Tmo store and did it there. I kept my JOD so I'll be able to get the Note 8 when it comes out. I'm a happy camper lol. But I went with the regular S8, same screen size as the Note 7, just less bezel.

I'm using both phones(N7 & s8+). Let me make it a short and sweet. S8+ is pretty much like the N7. Both phones pretty much has same software and exterior, except s8+ is a bit taller(more screen real estate). You obviously missing out the mighty s-pen from N7. Look at the pic below, the N7 sits almost perfectly inside the s8+'s wallet case. For those whom still has the N7, IMO just keep it and wait until the N8.

Lol, I would of kept mine but my battery was getting ****tier and my charging port was so loose that by the slightest touch it would come off. It was getting annoying.
But you're right, S8 is pretty much a N7 without the pen. Which I miss lol

Note 4 - dropped calls - often disconnects from network after patch

Hello XDA folks,
Two note 4's in the family both having same issue. After applying update N910VVRU2CQC1 in mid April our Verizon Note 4's have had a TON of issues disconnecting from network. Tried turning off advanced calling, had SIM cards replaced, etc...
Per Verizon rep in store, they've had a LOT of people coming in complaining of the exact same issue, and stated they've heard it's an issue across all service providers, not just Verizon. Basically Samsung broke it... my inner conspiracy theorist assumes it's so I go buy the new S8, but I'm not a fan of making a screen that can't play 99% of things in their native format. I can't even watch movies on a 3:4, let alone would I pay a ton for something that has black bars on the edge.
That said, here are my questions:
1. I'm likely going to root and just avoid the issue altogether, so could anyone advise their favorite android OS that I can pull from here that is very stable and tested? (can't afford to miss client calls).
2. If this fails, how do you all feel about the one plus three for a cheaper model phone? Looks pretty good, and probably faster than my note 4.
3. Feelings on Google Pixel if I decide to go the expensive route?
4. Always loved HTC, thoughts about the 10 or Ultra? (Oddly enough HTC's site advertises it to look pretty but didn't post much. Wondering if the HTC 10 and Ultra is like the S4 and Note 4 for Samsung. Prefer the larger phone).
Any other thoughts on how to move forward, or any other favorite non Samsung phones would be much appreciated.
Thank you for your time!
