Need info, how to disable data - Nexus S General

Hi,
I want to give my phone (Nexus S) to my son and switch to a family plan with data but I dont want him to have access to the 3G, I just want him to use wi-fi to connect to the Internet. Is there a way to disable the data and keep the wi-fi and SMS active? Maybe changing the APN setting to a non-working one. I dont want to just unclick the data option because you know that he will find the setting and reactivate it
Thanks.

I use APNdroid and I surf only by wifi. I dont have data plan, too

You can always delete the APNs in Wireless and Networks => Mobile Networks => Access Point Names.
But if he's cunning enough he can easily add them back.
Then again, can't you just ask Rogers to disable data for his SIM-card?

Just go to Menu > Settings > Wireless & network settings > Mobile network settings > Access Point Names > "current apn", now change the following.
APN > put a hash "#" and a couple of other characters at the end
MMSC > put a hash "#" and a couple of other characters at the end
APN type > put a hash "#" and a couple of other characters at the end
The phone should no longer connect to the mobile network, eg: 3G, 2G etc.

I think SMS need data on.

No, it doesn't.

Be careful, at least in Germany, some carrier allow internet access regardless of faulty APNs
I'd just call the carrier and ask them to deactivate mobile internet for that sim card, this also avoids trouble if there are ever costs for mobile internet on your bill.

I checked with Rogers and they cant disable the data for the phone since its part of a family plan Would have been too easy.
I will do some check with APN to see if everything work except 3G when I put wrong data in setting.
Thanks all

Go to settings -> wireless and networks -> mobile networks

Disabling edge/data connection

Hi all.
I just got a Nexus One and was wondering if there is a way to disable any data connections EXCEPT Wifi? I do not have a data plan w/AT&T any longer, but use a VZW Mifi modem as a wifi connection and do not want to incur any additional data charges with AT&T.
Thanks

I personally haven't had any issues and I'm on TMo UK. Have you tried enabling it both ways? From the wireless settings in the settings menu and from the app in the app drawer?

When I connect, it takes about 5 to 8 minutes until I can get access. Try leaving it connected for a while.
on tmobile uk too and no issues here. start the hotspot, search on the laptop for the wifi name and enter code.
Maybe post the steps you have done so far so people can try and see whats wrong?

Select Hotspot app
Inputed router name and security code WPA(TKIP) 9 letters
Selected checkbox 'Portable Wi-fi Hotspot'
Searched on laptop for router and inputed WPA
Laptop connected
Started internet app like firefox
On phone in the notification area the hotspot '3G' text (not the symbol) keeps dropping after a few mins and reappears
Ok sorted I think there was a problem with the apn I removed user and password entries and all sorted.

Mobile data (roaming) disabled post wifi access

I'm using an IDEOS X5 from 2degrees NZ. I'm in Dunedin, so I need to enable roaming data access (my phone co offers data services via another network in my home town).
I have identical ADSL routers (Dynalink RTA1025WE) at home and work.
If I visit my work, wifi enables as expected, and disables when I leave; mobile data works from there.
When I go home, wifi enables as expected, but after I leave the house I cannot access mobile data unless I manually enable Wireless & Networks => Mobile networks => Data enabled
Why would this be? Is there some AP-specific setting I can clear to stop this behaviour?
Are you still using the stock rom? have you disable the data usage reminder that pops up when the wifi disconnects?
Using any apps like juice defender?
I'm in Dunedin too =)
same problem here...
use z4root to get admin rights http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
then follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045855
i think you'll (we'll) be fine after that.
i just did it, i dont have any updates yet.

Check " settings > data usage > turn on mobile data.
Also settings> more > mobile networks > check data enable and uncheck use 2g network. If these instructions don't work then you need to get right APN for your network.
Hope this helps

I have the same problem but not always, only sometimes.
Any advice?

[Q] Smart Actions to automatically disable mobile data when connected to wifi?

On other forums, people have suggested setting up a smart action to automatically turn off mobile data when connected to a wifi connection. However, my Razr M does not appear to give me that option.
I am able to set an action to turn on wifi, and to turn off mobile data when I am at home (using my home location as the trigger and turning wifi on, and turning mobile data off as an action).
However, when I try to set wifi network as a trigger, the "set mobile data" action is greyed out, and I am unable to select it. This is on version 4.2.2.3.0.
Am I missing something here, or is what I am trying to do not possible?
Is there a reason you need to? Android *should* shut data off for any apps that don't specifically request mobile data (VZW's suite comes to mind...)

Two reasons: 1) I am on a shared data plan via work, so I want to be mindful of my data use, and 2) it it my understanding that connecting to wifi uses less battery than being constantly connected to 4g.

When Wifi is available and your phone is connected, automatically 4g is off and wifi is used... I don't see the point of using smart actions for this.

Thanks, I did not realize this.
The reason I ask is because I saw a number of sites that discussed turning mobile data off when connected to wifi. See here and here
