Tethering on Quantum - Quantum General

Hey guys,
I'm a little slow in this area so I need help. I plan to get a new netbook for CHRISTmas and I was told that in order to get online I would need to connected to wifi/hotspot such as starbucks or McDonalds or I could purchase an something from ATT that I put in the USB port that will allow me to connect anywhere but it cost per month. I then went online and found about tethering. Is this something I can do on my quantum or not? Yes or no and if yes, how do I go about doing it?

Google LG quantum tether..
http://www.lgforum.com/forum/boards/general/lg/topics/lg-quantum-tethering
There is just one example..

Is this something that I have to pay for or is it free? What is the difference in this and internet sharing with the new mango update?

WM6 Internet Connection Sharing... Tethering?

Ok so yeah, just looking at it, when you are told how to tether on AT&T its nothing like what WM6.1 has... I just open Internet Sharing, and click connect, wam bam I'm through...
Now the question I have is will I get charged extra by doing this with AT&T? Right now I have a standard 39.99 plan with the $50 unlimited TXT and data package... Doesn't speak anything of Tethering.
I hate to ask AT&T about this because if it works without getting charged, I don't want to bring that to their attention.
Internet sharing has worked for me since Feb 07 on my 8525. Before that I used the modem feature on my 8125 to connect my laptop to the internet. No extra charges. Hope I didnt just jinx myself!!
Thanks for the responce, I tried it quick and downloaded a few pages and waited a couple of days... No pay per use charges showed up on my online bill, and I didnt think it would because hell its connecting via wap.cingular, so how are they to know how I was browsing
Finally Internet almost everywhere I go!!!

P6800 as a modem for laptop? Internet sharing?

Hey guys,
I have a co-worker that has a P6800 and would like to use his data connection on his phone, to connect his laptop to the internet.
Not sure if this is possible.
I have never messed with it before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Unless you are paying the additional fee that most providers offer for tethering, I would suggest he not do it, unless he flashes a custom rom on it, and even then I wouldn't have him use it as his primary connection. Most providers have a 1g - 5g cab, and exceeding that can cost a lot extra, or get your account canceled. So unless he is only planning to surf the web and check email, I would tell him to not do it, but if he wants to do just basic stuff that the phone can already do, then flash a custom rom and he should be fine.

P6800 sharing internet
Not sure why he cant go somewhere where his laptop can pick up wifi, but he insisted on finding a way to use his P6800 as a "wireless modem" as one may say.
Not sure if he has an unlimited data plan.
What is the internet sharing program on the windows mobile devices?
I use WMWifirouter. It works well for exactly what your asking about.

Whats the latest free version of this?
Yes u can use ur xv6800 as a modem for ur laptop, it cost extra for it though! I pay $45 extra a month for unlimited data on my laptop and mobile phone! I think it definitely worth it because I can use all the data I want!

I don't believe there is a "Free" version, it is a trial then you pay like $19.99 for it.... or don't.... whatever....
It is awesome though, and I suggest everyone with a PPC get this proggy

This is a 6800 must have one of the best programs out there and well worth the cost there is another one similar out there but it requires you to pay a monthly/yearly subscription .
I use PDAnet
http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php
The current build is 34 bucks. IMO it was 34 bucks well spent on my part. WmWiFiRouter works awesome believe me, but its a very huge battery sapper in my experience. With PDAnet, the internet is tethered through the USB cable and the basis is the same as WMWifiRouter, phone connects to internet and shares it to the pc. I use it all the time since i'm in a dial up only area and with good signal get up to 300kb/sec on downloads and can browse multiple web pages, most image heavy, all at once.

the last ver. before it went to pay was .91 this is the one i use everyday with no problems.
using a 6800 stock to tether is ill advised. there are some reg edits that people say "hide" your tethering activity and make it look like your just surfing the net on your phone. nearly all of the good custom roms out there already do this for you. i recommend dcd, but i know there are people that just like to keep it stock and although i don't understand it, i don't hold it agenst them.
there are ALOT of people that tether with just a unlimited data plan and nothing more. if you do a search, i don't think you'll find one person who has made the rge. changes has been charged, and its been going on for YEARS. hell, i started with my old samsong a900. that being said, it's agenst the TOS and thus you should not do it, or at least relize you have to proseed at your own risk.

Tethering: Is there a way to avoid being detected by Big Red?

In my sig, you'll see my phone history. With Alltel, I paid a low flat rate for internet service that allowed tethering. Now that I have the Ozone, Verizon requires that I pay $30.00 a month for unlimited access through my phone. The moment I tether, Verizon recognizes it and requires I sign up for their Mobile Connect plan of 5GB access a month for an additional $30.00 a month.
That's $60.00 a month folks for a service I paid half for with Alltel.
Is their a way to circumvent detection? I'm a truck driver and the phone and computer are my only sources of entertainment while I am gone for weeks on the road. I really love hulu.com. But the limits that I am now restricted to makes it difficult to enjoy CHiPs (go Erik Estrada! lol...)
Seriously, I'm a Battlestar Galactica addict and I need my fix of sexy cylon ass. Any help would be awesome.
Try out
junefabrics.com PdaNet. Worked well with my Palm Treo 700wx as well as my Ozone.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how Verizon detects tethered traffic from handset traffic?
Its not so much that VZW can detect that you tether... its that they've locked down that option from your handset.(*)
I believe that on all VZW smart phones Internet Connection Sharing is either locked down or not even included in the phone's firmware. This means, from VZW's perspective, if a Cust wants to tether they need to get the Vzw Access software... so thats how they know and how they can charge you.
As mentioned in a previous post... pdanet does allow you to get around this. Its worked really well for me, although I've never gotten to Bluetooth tether to work :-(
(*) I have heard rumors that VZW has monitored traffic and has contacted customers who they suspected were tethering under the rationale that they were using too much bandwith w/ their smartphones. This is just second hand rumors though...
Use this and avoid the verizon tethering software.

Correct me if I am wrong... but, I looked through that thread and isnt that software package for Windows Pro?
The Willow(Snap/Ozone/3G) are all WinMo Standard. Also, I believe that before you can have a VZW phone like the snap broadcast as a WiFi spot it has to have ICS installed.
Sadly, I've tried to get ICS installed and have tried to get several different HotSpot programs to work an so far nothing has worked on my Ozone. If anyone has successfully done it and wants to share I would greatly appreciate it.
I thought there was also some number like *___ that you could dial when connected to the Maple as a usb/bluetooth modem as the dial in number that would let you access the data. I don't know if this would be detected.
Hate to say it but T-Mobile rocks. I tether all the time on 3G and no extra charges, 20.00 a month and I have unlimited data. Why anyone sticks with Verizon is beyond me... And dont give me the old coverage line, T-Mobile has grown a lot coverage wise and 3G will be nation wide by the end of the year. GSM is the only way to go

While T-Mobile has a great data plan, their calling plans are not great. I require national coverage due to where I travel. Alltelwas awesome, Verizon, not so much.
T-Mobile, Sprint, Alltel, and AT&T don't work locally at my house in appalachia, only Verizon. So, it just seemed the logical choice.
I wish Alltel stayed around.

When was the last time you checked T-Mobile coverage? I have friends that live on Brown Street in Appalachia, they use T-Mo.
This issue was my first to take care of. Use WMWifirouter. I use it all day, can teather via USB or Wireless. No additional charge.

Couple questions for you then...
Are you using the OZONE for VZW? And if so, where did you get Internet Connection Sharing since VZW removed it from the phone.
Thanks!
ICS is found here.
Download Here!
You may need to change some settings in ##778 before you connect. Here are some instructions I found on ppcgeeks.
Before you start using Internet Sharing, you need to go into EPST (##778 send) from the Phone Screen,
Choose Edit
Password= 000000,
Press View Info
Select M.IP Default Profile,
Edit DUN NAI and change it to [email protected] (this should match the above 'NAI' setting.)
Phone will reset. Now try using ICS. Should work fine.
I used the above method and was able to connect. wmwifirouter will connect to, so I may purchase that now.
Or just try that WMWifiRouter for free for a month, then buy it, no ICS, cool app.

Sweet... thanks alot! I'll give it a shot and report back.
WhatsGoing on here
I cannot download the link to ICS that was posted above (I dont know if it is dead or what) I do havea copy of ICS that i was using on My 6800 but when i Install it on my Ozone it says that it was for a previous version of WinMo. and when i try to install WMWIFIRouter It simply says "Jorrit Jongma WMWifiRouter cannot be installed. Try installing again to a different location choose a location: " Device or Storage Card. and Neither one of them work please help
I know a lot of you out there are using windows pc's but there are a few of us using a mac, with my mac I was able to set up a bluetooth modem connection without changing any settings or buying any programs. When you pair your device (I use a verizon Ozone) it will allow you to use your internet connection. The settings are available in drop down menus and are as follows:
Phone Vendor: Generic
Phone Model: GPRS (GSM/3G)
Username: <blank>
Password: <blank>
APN: <blank>
CID: 1
then I chose to show modem status in the menu bar and it makes it very easy to connect from there.
After that you may need to go to network pref. then to bluetooth and under the default configuration put in a telephone number of #777 include the # sign.
I don't know if this will incur additional charges I just figured out how to do it, I'll update when my next bill comes.
I hope this helps mac users and maybe sheds some light on how a pc user could get their's to work
They work with Window Mobile... I was told that they have a contract with Window Mobile and Window Mobile would report all internet usages on all phone lines to Verizon.
Hi all,
Don't you thing tethering is simply detected from the user agent ?
When I had this type of problems in France, I used :
https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/59/
This way, you can have you laptop to send the same uder agent as you Snap with, say, Opera mini.

I don't think so, as you could do it the other way around
Use IE User Agent on your smarthphone - pay as if you were tethering?

Proxy internet for HD2 on T-mobile?

My sister really needs a new phone and is with T-mob USA. I was telling her to get the HD2 when it comes out, and she really likes the phone but she doesn't want to pay for the added internet plan. When I had my Shadow (1st gen) I was able to use the t-mobile lower internet plan (t-zones?) and using proxy server info I was able to use the internet almost 100% normal. There were only a few apps that were odd.
What are the chances that since this is still a WinMo phone it will have that ability? Is this something that can be figured out before the phone comes out? Also, if it did work, would it access 3g data?
Thanks for any help/info.
Nick
When the HD2 launches it will have a required data pack just like all other windows, blackberry's and android devices currently do. If a discount is recieved on the device then the data pack (minimum $25/month) is required, paying full retail price is the only way not to have it. T-zones is no longer offered by itself for $5.99/month unless your plan is a grandfathered plan that supports it but would only be able to be used if the phone was purchased at retail.

i use tmobile in uk if the proxy box is ticked my mail dosent load.
T-Mobile USA now uses the device IMEI for data plans
The proxy trick does not work anymore on Tmobile USA, they now use the phone's IMEI number to verify that the phone is on the correct data package. It works for about 24 hours now then when you try and access the internet you are sent to a screen to add the correct data package.
Proxy internet for HD2 on T-Mobile
I have T-mobile with the $5.99 T-Zones. I used it on the DASH and am now using it on a Touch VIVA. If I buy the HD2 from T-Mobile with no contract are they still going to force me to get a data plan or will my T-Zones stop working. I want to keep my T-Zones and may have to get an ulocked phone.

I'm currently with AT&T and about to switch to T-mobile when the HD2 comes out. When I spoke to the T-mobile rep., (trying to get him to set me up on the cheap data plans instead) He told me T-mobile can tell what phone you are using and know if it is on the correct plan. He also stated that if the phone is unlocked then you can trick their systems into letting you keep your old plan. Now again, I dont know if this is true or not, I am about to switch...hopefully this month, I'll find out then.
With AT&T, I have an old data plan (unlimited internet, 1500 text, 200 MMS) and I pay $19.95/month. they have never made me change my data plan and I am using the Tilt2. If you go through the priemer business website to upgrade your phone, they dont give you the $50 discount and you get to keep your data plan unchanged....all other channels force the upgrade with an updated data plan. Again, the only way around that is to buy your phone from someone else, unlocked, or have warranty dept. swap out your phone for a different model. My nephew has the $10 data plan and is now using the Tilt2 on it via warranty swapping out his phone for a different model (the Tilt2).
I know on the AT&T service you do get the 3g speeds, so I assume it will be the same for T-Mobile (but then again assuming may not be the best way to go). Hope that helped
I am pretty certain that my sister has a grandfathered in 5.99 T-zones package too. I am hoping that she can get it and use this way. The email not loading problem that adamo mentioned though doesn't sound good. Do the other internet based things work ok?

from what I was told, everything should work correctly and at the correct speed, as long as the phone is unlocked. The cell phone service providers don't seem to really offer different speeds at different rate plans like the cable internet companies do.
I had not seen your message from earlier ... we posted at the exact same time. Thanks though for your input. I will let her know. It seems like it is worth a try. Worst case scenario, she has a great phone but she has to use Wifi to check her mail and such.

Using wifi tethering takes you to verizon site to buy it?? Never mind. Found the answ

Looks like they made a newer version of wifi tethering to get around this. Screw u verizon
Tried to use wifi tethering last night. On the computer I connected to my phone and began to browse the internet. Instead of going to my site, it took me to a verizon website basically saying hey there. If you want to use wifi tethering, you have to pay 20/month for it.
Any one know of a way around this?
