Hi all,
I am using exchange push mail.
It works fine for mail in my inbox folder, but not for other folders. (there are exchange rules that redirect mail into folders)
Any suggestions?
(I'm using MODACO Desire if it matters).
anyone?
anyone? is this the right forum for the subject?
I know K9 supports this.
(too bad k9 is hideous)

Hideous I can handle... Randomly not polling for folders is what gets me.. Maybe it's just when I use it in XDAndroid (trialing Android until I get an N1 or Desire) but it's always making me miss emails because it is no longer polling.
It'll work for a while, but eventually... nothing.
EDIT: Nope, K9 works just dandy on my Nexus One, never found it missing any emails so far!
...
thanks for the info guys..
I understand it's not possible with built in mail\htc mail.
It would be nice to have this feature (if any developers are reading this)
I'm tired of manually checking my folders every hour.. I'm sure i'm not the only one.
Hello All,
I have a problem I am hoping has a solution. I can't find it though, so I will ask and see what comes out of it.
I would like to do either one of 2 things if it is possible...
1) Change back to the Pocket Outlook client for BOTH SMS and MMS. I found a cab that will allow Outlook to be the SMS client, but then MMS does not work. Not a real acceptable solution for me. Is there a way to get them both back?
2) There are 2 fairly important features missing from the current stock client. First and foremost is a switch to get sent messages from saving. I don't want sent messages at all. I already know what I sent, I don't need it saved for me even if I am not smart enough to know what I sent... If there is a way to stop this forced waste of space, please let me know. Another issue with the current client is that I cannot add folders to the list. Is there a way to add to the list of folders in the stock client? I would like more than in/out/sent/drafts/deleted. Is there a way to do this?
Either of these is a good solution. I kind of like the look/feel of the new client, but the missing functionality, or the lack of ability to turn off functionality, is a complete wash for me.
I am unwilling to flash a new rom to the device. I have done it and was happy, but I just prefer not to. Is there any other suggestions/fixes/tweaks that will help out with the above?
Thanks!
Using the email client, is there any way to move email from the inbox to another folder?
I was thinking the same thing... I may have to install K9..
Double post
Hmm.. never noticed that. I only use mail for my work exchange account and I prefer to sort/move messages on a full computer when at work anyway. Even so, I can see where others might find it useful but I too couldn't find a way to do it.
I know this is an older post, but I thought I would post here instead of starting a new thread.
I just flashed Onyx from Team Whiskey earlier today and to my surprise, the regular email client supports Move To Folder. I love it. Have been searching for this feature ever since I made the move to Android. It was the one reason I started learning how to root and flash to begin with.
Just wanted to give Team Whiskey from props.
Since any of the custom 2.2 ROMs came out the email client wont connect to Yahoo any more For the first time it downloads emails, next time it says password incorrect. It happened to me after Obsidian V2 as well as V3. So now usng Maildroid. It supports move to other folders.
The last two 2.2 ROM's I used had issues, but all could move an email between folders in my Exchange account. However after upgrading to CyanogenMod 7.1 this is gone. Anyone have a 2.3 ROM that has this functionality? I don't want to download touchtown just for this basic functionality.
I'm tempted -- the hardware platform seems to be very close to what I'd want. (Don't like that the front buttons aren't hard-buttons, but I can probably live with that.)
I'm waiting (for now) to hear some feedback about Exchange integration (calendar sync, push email, contacts sync.)
(I got (and returned) two Android phones so far: an N1 on the day they came out, and a Galaxy S (pretty nearly the day they came out) and ended up returning both. (History: Blackberry 857, Blackberry 5810, Blackberry 6710, Blackberry 7290, Blackberry 8310. Yes, I'm used to my Exchange email and calendar being rock-solid.))
Questions for anybody who gets their hands on one and has Exchange:
- Does calendar sync work? Comments?
- Can you: accept/reject/tentative meeting requests from email app?
- Can you: accept/reject/tentative meeting requests from calendar app?
- Can you create a meeting request?
- Can you view availability?
- Can you change the meeting reminder tone? (Believe it or not, on the Galaxy S running 2.1, there's no way to do this.)
- Does email push? Comments?
- Do email subfolders push?
- Can you move messages into subfolders?
- Can you view and/or search server subfolders?
- Can you get a unified view of your Exchange and Google/GAFYD inbox?
- Can you access the GAL?
- Do contacts sync?
- Do contacts in subfolders sync? Can you choose subfolders to sync or not?
- Can you do these things in the stock apps, or do you have to use Touchdown or K9 or Moxier to get the results you want?
Thanks.
From what you list, Touchdown would be your best bet I think. Granted, I haven't used (or have ever heard of) K9 or Moxier so I don't know how they are but I have used Touchdown since Android 1.5 and it's been fantastic. Last night I got my G2 and decided to try the stock Exchange in Android to see how well it fared and it's fine for basic Exchange email but that's about it. A co-worker of mine swears by it but I'm wondering if he just doesn't want to pay for Touchdown? Then again all he does is basic email. If you're doing more like meetings, availability, etc... then you'd need to look at something other than stock Exchange. In my case, I'm sticking with Touchdown. I don't know if you've used Touchdown at all but you can download it (fully functional) and use it for 5 (or is it 7?) days before it asks you to purchase it.
Now for K9 and Moxier...I haven't even heard of them but will check them out myself to see if they are a better way to go than Touchdown.
Exchange integration is very important to me and so far, this phone is outperforming the Blackberry that I used before I got the G2. Granted, I was not on a BES with the BB; I imagine that there's pretty much nothing better than a Blackberry on a BES when it comes to Exchange.
Here are answers to your questions:
Calendar sync works great. I create an event in Outlook and see it on my phone really quickly, and vice versa. I cannot say that the sync is instananeous but does the trick.
Accepting/rejecting/creating meetings and availability I've never had the opportunity to do, so I don't know.
You can change the overall meeting reminder tone, but not for each individual meeting. At least not natively....there may be an app available for that.
Email pushes. Sometimes instantaneously, sometimes with a bit of very reasonable lag (30sec - 1min).
I'm able to access my email subfolder on my phone. The sent messages sync between my Outlook and my phone, as well as my junk mail folder syncs also (unfortunately).
It appears I cannot move emails from one folder into another (bummer).
It also appears that not only can I not search through any of my emails, I also cannot copy/paste from the body of the emails I receive either (major bummer).
I only have one email address syncing right now.....but I believe you can have the inbox either split your two email addresses into their own respective inboxes, or combine the two and show all in one. I did this on the Vibrant while I had it for a very short time. I can say though that Gmail has its own icon and MAY not show in the general Email application. I don't know for sure as I don't really even use gmail and have not tried adding it under the general Email application.
The GAL is supported and it's pretty cool cause I can start typing a recipient's name in the "to" field in my email and it'll auto search the GAL.
Contacts sync in the same manner as email/calendar sync.
I haven't seen any options to choose contact subfolders to sync. I will say though that distribution lists/contact groups don't sync.
Everything I've said in this post deals with the native Email application of Android 2.2. I am not using any third party application.
Tasks and Notes do not sync.
Best of luck to you.
I have been using TouchDown for +1 year. Started on the MyTouch 3G and it is easier to use on the G2.
The G2 integration is basic: calandar, email and contacts only . Touchdown is a full fledged Exchange client that allows you do everything you can do from your desktop. Took less than 2 mins to configure and it was up and running. There was 0 issue transfering the license from the myTouch to the G2 as they have integrated the license to your google email account, not the phone you purchased it for.
^ Stock does contacts sync too.
The Froyo email client supports Activesync version 12, that eliminated some of the limitations that the stock exchange intergation had. On my G2 I have 3 exchange accounts setup. all sync'ing calendar, contacts, email add, moves, changes and invites. In addition to that I can sync my public folders, most particuarly my GALs.
So that there is no confusion on what I am saying:
Here are important points:
- It is possible to synchronize ALL public/shared folders to the devices. This
includes emails, contacts, calendars and tasks.
- The folders must be explicitly selected for synchornization
- Only few devices can display more than one calendar or contact folder, so all calendars, and contacts even shared will be contained in the native folder. Only a problem with you use multiple accounts.
The only current Activesync limitations with contacts are as follows:
Activesync can synchronize up to 3 email address. Phone number synchronization is limited to 2 Home numbers, 1 Home Fax, 1 Mobile, 1 Pager, 3 Work (one will be labeled 'Company Main') and one Work Fax number."
So you do have options, but as you can see from the other posts, what you want to do can definitely be supported.
I call BS on you syncing tasks and being able to move emails between folders natively.
I bought a license for Moxier Mail back in the days before Android 2.x. I don't keep any third party EAS clients around anymore thanks to the built-in EAS. However, if you absolutely need features like GAL, accept/reject meetings, availability, basically anything beyond mail and very basic calendaring, then you better get one of the third party EAS clients.

Other than your phone how do you connect to your email account?
For what it's worth the implementation of ActiveSync on the G2 is not supporting any security provisioning.
Passcode lock is not enforced, and I am not 100% about remote wipe. I will be testing at some point in time tomorrow.
I will be contacting HTC tomorrow, T-Mobile didn't have any info about the lack of support for these features.
I was surprised as this is the only 2.2 phone I have tested that does not support these features. (Droid 2, Droid X, HTC 4G, CM6 on my HD2)
Remarkably HTC was even less help than T-Mobile
I was basically informed that not enough people had complained about the bungled implementation of ActiveSync yet, so they didnt have any further information and were not investigating a fix.
It was a nice 12 hours G2, but it looks like you are going back to Tmo

I tried Touchdown back on the N1, and I recall being very unimpressed with the UI; I'm afraid I don't remember specifics, but it didn't leave a good taste.
When you say "it's fine for basic Exchange", can you clarify what you consider non-basic? (I would, for example, consider everything I mentioned to be "basic"; non-basic would be delegate management, category administration, rules....) Thanks.
I tried Touchdown when I tried the N1, and was so unimpressed that I don't think I tried it again on the Galaxy S. Moxier doesn't appear to be updating MoxierMail, but it worked pretty well. K9 was new to me, but appealed because it was rapidly evolving with a strong, tech oriented, development and discussion community -- a couple of small bugs I found were reported, tested, and fixed during just the week I had the Galaxy S.
UPDATE: Just saw this on the Touchdown site: "TouchDown does not work with POP3 or IMAP servers". In other words, I couldn't use it as a single client for Exchange and non-Exchange accounts; for me, that's a killer.

aedv, thanks for your response -- I'm a little confused though. You say you don't have BES, but your back end is Exchange? If that's right, thanks -- valuable info. I'd appreciate it if you'd check the contacts subfolder thing; if you're willing, PM me your email address, and I'll send you a test meeting invite so we can see if you get the option to accept/decline.
My back end is Exchange, and I did not use BES while I was on my Blackberry. The Exchange server is run by my school and they don't have a BES.
I tried contact subfolders and that didn't work. I sent myself an invitation to a meeting and I was given the option on the phone to either accept or deny the invitation, so there's your answer.

markdurant, thanks -- despite your great answer, I'm still a tiny bit confused. Can you clarify re:
- contacts subfolders: I have a main Contacts folder, with a subfolder "manufacturing contacts". Can I cause the subfolder to sync? (I understand from your answer that the appearance on the device may be "flat", i.e. all in one giant list; that's ok.)
- message filing: You are able to move messages from Inbox to other Exchange folders?
- Common inbox: You mention having three Exchange boxes; do you get a consolidated view, perhaps with color coding? Do you have any non-Exchange (e.g. Google) email accounts?
Thanks again.
Nothign can be worse than the Vibrant's exchange integration... for some reason it will NOT sync the majority my calendar entries on my exchange account. Email is fine but the calendar on the vibrant is just terrible. Worked fine on the nexus, and has sync'd fine on any nokia (symbian s60/maemo) phone I've used as well.
One of the reasons I'm ditching the vibrant and jumping to g2 goodness.

Howdy...
I'm using the standard email client (not Gmail) on my note 3...
My issue is that when I delete an email through either my laptop client, or my email's webclient (I use Fastmail.fm), the emails don't delete on my Note 3.
The result is that I can delete a bunch of old messages and spam on my laptop, but they hang around on my phone.
I've used K-9, and it works perfectly, deleting emails on the phone as I delete them on the laptop, but I was hoping to use the stock email client so I could have Galaxy Gear notifications from the email.
Has anyone else seen this issue? Or know how to fix it?
Thanks!

Hi Ben,
Since you are using a stock email client on your notebook, how have you enabled the syncing with your Note 3. When using GMail and other email clients, there's an API within the device which queries the email server requesting new notifications based on what you've triggered your device to query. With a stock email client, this does not always succeed as some ISP's have crippled 3rd party applications from querying their servers.
Hope this helps!
I'm not sure what you mean by a 'stock email client on my notebook'. It's Apple Mail, but I can use my webclient too..
As I mentioned, I'm not using an ISP. I use fastmail.fm
I have enabled 'syncing' on the phone... or else I wouldn't be getting new mail at all, I suppose...
So, getting new mail is not an issue. The issue is that mail deleted on my laptop is NOT deleted on my phone. So, if I delete 100 spam emails on my laptop, they are still on my phone. Again, only with the standard email client. It works perfectly with K-9.
Sorry if I've misunderstood your response. Can you elaborate what I may be doing wrong?
Best,
Ben

I started having problems with the stock email app on my note 2 & gave up on it & went over to using K9 so when I got my note 3 I expected problems with it but gave it another chance & it's completely screwed up. It constantly downloads mails I've deleted & shows them as unread & sometimes displays only old mail from about a year ago.. its a total mess... its doing that "your password has changed couldn't connect" thing that it also did on my note 2... I've now deleted all the accounts off it & only use K9.

Hi Ben,
Based on your initial post, I though there were two issues:
Problems with your Apple Mail syncing with fastmail.fm and vice-versa
Problems with the K-9 application installed on your Android device syncing with fastmail.fm and vice-versa
Sorry for any confusion my post may have caused! This will be the best way to explain things and let me know should you have questions...
K-9 is an email client which you have installed on your Android device. This client has been configured during its initial setup so when you receive new mail, it is delivered to K-9 on your Android device. Syncing has been turned on so what you do with the remote client (K-9) will reflect on the server (fastmail.fm) and vice-versa. There is usually some type of setting triggered where on conflict, the server takes priority.
The above as you've suggested is working correctly but the problem here is with your Apple Mail:
Apple Mail is your client application within OS-X which supports the handling of email. During the configuration of this application, you have entered all your server settings for fastmail.fm so this client (Apple Mail) will query and pull email from the fastmail.fm server either real time, in specific intervals (5 min, 10 min etc...) or simply when you click a "Check Mail" button.
The problem you have is whenever you update Apple Mail, the changes are not reflecting (or syncing) to your device. I do not know much about Apple Mail but your issue would lead me to the conclusion you have disabled this ability within your Apple Mail program. I would double check your settings and make sure you have enabled your Apple Mail program to propagate changes to the server. This will allow changes made to email within your remote client to update server-side and should reflect across all your devices which are configured with the fastmail.fm email account.
The only issue is Apple products are very strict with their security measures so I know the Apple Mail client will download from the server but I'm unsure if it allows a post-back to update the server regarding changes made through the Apple Mail client. I'm sure it's a simple fix within the settings but if not, I'm assuming it has to do with a layer of security being implemented by Apple but not being an Apple user myself, someone else would need to clarify.
Hope this helps!
Howdy...
There's nothing wrong with Apple Mail... Working perfectly.
Nothing wrong with the webapp from Fastmail. Also perfect.
Nothing wrong with K-9. Works perfectly.
The issue is with the stock Android Mail app on my Note 3.
Cellrama... I sincerely appreciate your efforts, but perhaps you could confine yourself to just dealing with that issue, as I seem to be having a very tough time explaining the situation to you... There's nothing at all wrong with the laptop, webapp, or K-9. They have all been working as they should for several years now...
My only issue is that I would like to receive email notifications on my Gear.. So, I have to use the default Android email client.
But, as was stated by the other poster, it seems not to work correctly. When iMAP email is deleted, that delete should sync across all clients. With me, it's syncing perfectly with every client except Android Email.
I apologize if my initial post confused you. I'm new to this forum, and I don't seem to be having much luck describing the problem in a way you are able to understand, so again, I apologize.
If anyone else has a solution to the issue, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Ben,
When you setup your fastmail account, did you set it up as a "POP" account or an "IMAP" account? POP accounts will only pull a copy of the email from the server to your device, but will not push changes made on your device back to the server. IMAP, however, is a two-way email protocol that will push changes made on your phone to the server. It looks like Fastmail supports both POP & IMAP, so I would try following the instructions listed here.
Howdy...
Thanks, but it's IMAP. I assume that if it weren't, it wouldn't work perfectly with Apple Mail, WebMail, and K-9.
It seems no one really wants to admit that this is an Android problem... No worries, I appreciate the help, and will look elsewhere... I appreciate the time you took to reply...
Best,
Ben

Ben,
Your initial posts refers to multiple devices and what works/doesn't work. I fully understood your post and was trying to provide you a little background information. I apologize if you took offense but when I ask what stock email client you're using on your notebook and the response received by you is you're unsure what I mean but you use "Apple Mail"... Well that's an email client!
The issue is when using the stock email application provided by Android, when you make changes through your Apple Mail program, this is not syncing to your device or to your Galaxy Gear for that matter. The simple answer is... With your stock Android application, as long as you have enabled IMAP, email should sync effortlessly. This has already been suggested by another member. If it is not working, you will need to check the settings in your Apple Mail client as well as your stock email application within Android. There is most likely something on the server which is blocking your sync. I would even log into fastmail.fm through your web browser and check the settings on their server to ensure everything is set correctly. As for the Galaxy Gear device... Well, I would not buy this as I've heard more bad than good and one review set focus on it's poor ability to sync email.
Hope this answers your question with more clarity.

Best,
Ben

I think it's more to do with a settings issue server-side (in the settings on fastmail.fm) or through one of your clients which is used to access your email. You rely on a web-based email solution (fastmail.fm) which you access using one of many programs installed on an array of devices. The problem here is when using the stock Android application for mail, any modifications made to mail through your notebook running "Apple Mail" will not propagate across the server and update live on your device using the stock Android mail app. You already have stated every other application and program work but it's just the stock Android mail application.
This would lead me to believe the stock Android mail app does not support fastmail.fm. Many API's developers now use are custom and specific to targeted applications such as an API call to communication with GMail and their array of services. I agree you're issue pertains to the stock Android mail app. Is this an Android problem??? Just as much as it is a fastmail.fm problem. Fastmail.fm is not your most popular email program therefore, developers will not be flocking to purchase custom API's for implementation into their software.
You have answered your own question circuitously! I use the stock email app for GMail and Outlook without problem so the developer has implemented the proper API's to interact with IMAP on these specific servers but I will assume has opted against this for a less popular web-mail server.
Hope this helps!
Actually, I think it's far more likely that Apple Mail, Fastmail, and K-9 all work perfectly, and that, as has been suggested by others many times on this forum and even on this thread, the stock Android app is flawed... This would make sense, since I'm sure Google would rather you use Gmail than some other provider.
Thanks for your time, but there are many assumptions in your email that are wrong... but let's just call it quits at this point. No need to reply, as I won't be checking.
I truly appreciate the time and detail you put into your post, and I'm sure you'll help many others.
Best,
Ben
PS: I've been using the Galaxy Gear for about a week, and find it a wonderful companion. I highly recommend it. Is it perfect? No, but I believe it's the best smartwatch out there currently, and it has exceeded my admittedly lowered expectations...

Ben,
Your initial posts refers to multiple devices and what works/doesn't work. I fully understood your post and was trying to provide you a little background information. I apologize if you took offense but when I ask what stock email client you're using on your notebook and the response received by you is you're unsure what I mean but you use "Apple Mail"... Well that's an email client!

There's no assumptions in my email which are wrong but hey... everyone is entitled to their opinion. If you read a bit closer, I agree with what you've stated! Your response mirrors mine in that the Android email app is flawed. Whether this is due to lack of API implementation or forced by other more dominant email providers, that's anyone's guess.
Glad you like your Galaxy Gear. I cannot comment but based on reviews, I would tend to shy away myself but that's great it works for you.
Thanks and have a good night!

Ben,
Just want to clarify to make sure we didn't miscommunicate. I wasn't asking if Fastmail is IMAP...i know that it supports both IMAP & POP. My question was did you set it up as an IMAP account on your phone. When adding an email account via the stock email app on the Note 3, after you enter your email address & password and pressing the "manual setup" button you'll be asked if it is a POP account, IMAP account or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account. If your server supports IMAP and you set it up as an IMAP account on the phone, it should work. It's a universal protocol that is supported on both ends. Sorry if I misunderstood your response...just wanted to make sure I was clear.
Thanks,
Ed
