Whenever I try to do a nand backup, I get a message saying there was an error in backing up my /data folder.
Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do? I'm on Virtuous.

How much space do you have free on you SD card? I like to have 2GB free for doing Nandroids.

Well, I don't use it for media and I frequently dump out my pictures to my computer. Is there anything left behind when you uninstall an app? I have 2 nandroid backups. And a my backup pro backup I made once. Is there an app that will tell you all the large sized files on your phone's sd card?
No, app uninstalls don't generally clean up data that they save on the SD card. You can check your available SD card space under Settings--> Storage. If it is under 2GB and you don't need both existing Nandroids online, you can copy one off to your computer. They are located in individual folders under:
/clockworkmod/backups
You can copy them back as needed or even from within recovery through the mount options. I keep a library of Nandroids on my computer and generally only keep 1 or 2 on the SD card.

My Vibrants USB connector is screwy and im going to ask for a replacement. Once I get my replacement, how I do transfer my info?
Contacts and Calendar will automatically get transfered from Google.
With Titanium Backup - do I just copy that folder over from one internal SD to the other and then proceed to reinstall apps?
What about other app data, etc.. Should I just copy over folders from one to other? Would that work?

I'll just echo shrivel and say you should be fine doing that however you will probably need to download the actual apps as the all's don't save with Titanium. Basically when you go to the market and download an app the apk is saved and installed on your phone what titanium will do is save all the data once you make a change to your phone say installing a Rom it wipes the data and uninstalls all of your apps. But it does not delete the apk so when you use titanium to restore it looks for that apk to reinstall it with the same data and setting. If you completely wipe your phone or copy the backup file to a new phone titanium will be looking for the apk to reinstall but its not there.
I know that was kind of long and if I'm wrong someone please correct me.

How do I get titanium to pull it off of the sd card? Or if I transfer it to the internal card in a folder (which is what its in) how do I get titanium to see the folder?
I can see the folder with astro on the internal card, but titanium doesn't see it?

your backup folder containing all the backups should be named TitaniumBackup and placed on the root of your internal sdcard. or you can specify the name of your backup folder in the preferences menu in titaniumbackup.
also, titianium backs up your app+data for you, so you don't need to re-download it from the market. if you want to backup other stuff like call log, text messages, home screen icons, phone contacts etc, use 'mybackup pro'

In astro if you press the home button it should take you to the root of the internal sd. Top should say that you are in directory /sdcard. Just move the TitaniumBackup folder to there and it should work.
EDIT: The home button in astro BTW, at the top under the notification bar, not the android home button on the bottom of the phone.
titanium backup folder is there and all the files are in it.
When I open up the app titanium back up, go to back up/ restore and then hit menu, batch, I don't see the files that are in that folder only whats on the phone as it came from tmobile (none of my apps and files)
What am I doing wrong or failing to do?
If your going back to the same kernel/ROM you can do a nandroid backup of your system files as well.
I just recently got the MyTouch4G, got it permrooted and did a full back up of my sd card to my pc, but it's still on stock rom. I want to flash cyanogen7 but there's a lot of junk on the sd card first
My question is if it is okay to do a full format and if so, any advice on important folders or files I should copy back after the format, apart from the clockwork folder (i know that one is important)

Well do as I do just create a dir called Files and inside it make sub dir's and put all stuff you want in it like aduio, video, photo, ect. Also dont worry about the other folders in your root /sdcard. Far as format goes as you backed it up to your PC just format sdcard and if you missed something it will rebuild itself. Make sure you backed up video/photo whatever if you took any. Usually once you install something that requires you to place elements in the root of your sdcard after its complete always remove it this way you save yourself a lot of headaches later on. I always keep my dir nice and clean old habit of *nix world

Thanks for your response. Just curious but clockwork recovery on Vibrant saves itself as update.zip (if I remember correctly) on the root of the internal sd card. Where does it save recovery on MT4G? I didn't see an update.zip file after flashing recovery. Thanks again for your response

Its saved under /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup you will see the dir with timestamp. Normally I don't waste time backing up as I know what I am doing but if you do want it then go ahead and just mv the dir to your PC temporarily then sync back to sdcard once you are done.
Whatever data is saved even the cache on SD I know so if I find data that is valuable I still mv it to /sdcard/files and redirect that path. This way I have clean data scheme as you don't want 9000 bs on your root directory.

I think CM comes with clockwork rom manager preinstalled. Your recovery won't change when you flash a rom. There's no need to back up recoveries because they're available in rom manager. If you need cw 3.0.0.5 just download the flashable version from the cm7 forum and save it.

Since the mytouch 4g installs some of the apps on the microSD card, does a nandroid backup include those in the system image? Or should I use something like titanium backup for those?

Nandroid will back everything in the system including apps but some data is stored on the sd card as well. My advice is to a nandroid and backup your entire sd card to your pc as well

This is not really in reference to cyanogenmod but any rooted MT4G. When you root your phone you download and install clockwork. From rom manager, you choose ' flash recovery'. You choose your phone from the list and it flashes the recovery image somewhere on your phone. My question was to find out what directory does it flash recovery to and as what the file is called.
I am currently running gorillasens final but this would be the same as any rom here, possibly the exception being cyanogenmod

does your phone still boot up properly without any issues? i'm assuming since you had backups prevoiusly that clockworkmod is already installed on your phone. you can just boot into recovery and make another backup. it isn't necessary to have your original backup.
Maybe a good time for a reminder that SD cards fail and accidents happen. It's always a good idea to periodically copy the entire contents of the SD card, which will include your nandroid backups, to an empty folder on your desktop/laptop. Just be sure and enable viewing of hidden and system files & folders.

Do the contents of my sd card have any effect on rom or after downgrade. I think i understand that some apps require 2.3.4 for compatibility reasons. After downgrading, rooting, can i use my previous sd card?
The contents of the sdcard can, but normally do not affect the ROM. Unity does store some stuff on the sdcard and android creates a few hidden folders for data. If the other ROM doesn't use the same storage, there should be no adverse consequences.
If your sdcard has multiple partitions; fat, ext, swap; then it will be more likely to cause issues. If you are just using it for storage then it shouldn't be an issue.
Be sure to move any PD15IMG files to a subfolder and you should be fine.

Hopefully the PM was alright. I'll be sure to move the PD15IMG.zip to another folder. When using titanium backup for the apps i saved the data also. If, after rooting redownload the app and having the dropbox account and having saved the titanium backup data folder - should i be able to restore each app + data without having to save each data folder? I appreciate your help.
If you copied the titanium folder from the sdcard after running the backup, then yes, your data is saved too. Some apps will act a little funny if you do a restore of "app + data". With those, I restore the app only, then restore data only.
You may find it easier to put the titanium folder back on the sdcard before you download the app again. Then when the app initializes it will see the folder is already there and use the information in it.
Google's backup feature has been hit and miss with me when switching ROMs. Sometimes it installs all my apps from the market, some times only a few of them and usually none of them.

I'm having a heck of a time with the internal storage on my S4. What I have done so far: Rooted -> Flashed with Xousos v1.0 (no problem) -> Backup to SD card with CWM -> Flashed with Xousos v2.0 -> Flashed Theme Reverepats ICS (MF9) -> Flashed ComaDose = No Space
I moved all my apps to my SD card and even deleted dropbox and all documents sync to free up space. Before I do a rom flash I clear data/cache/davilik cache and format system. I know the S4's 16GB is really an 8GB - but to only have a few hundred megs left after a fresh flash and TiBackup restore of a handful of apps is not right.
I figure I must have copies of the previous installs somewhere on the internal storage, I just dont know where to look. So if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what directories I can delete or any steps to help free up some space, I would really appreciate it.

Check the "MISC" folder and check to see what are the folders that take up the most space. I have a feeling you are going to have a nandroid on there that is taking up about 3-4gbs

I apologize for the dumb question in advance, but do you know the location of that folder?
I went to storage/emulated/0 in root explorer and the file structure looks the same as the phone folder explorer but no large files - screen shot attached (largest file first)

This will be my last resort, I just did the wipe/flash and would like to try and solution the problem before I do the wipe
Get disk usage app and poke around the filesystem. It will graphically show you what folders are storing large amounts of data. It will be a lot faster using that tool with finding large files than going through each folder with a file browser app.

In the storage screen (from your original post, where it showed the breakdown), just tap on miscellaneous and it should show you the folders that make up that 7.52GB

Thanks, this is a handy little app, especially with root access.
I attached a screen shot - it looks like the system data folder is dominating the space - is it possible there is still an old rom on there or possible a backup (like was mentioned earlier) and if so, how do I get to it?

That was my last screen shot - when I tap miscellaneous the biggest folder in there is 3.69 MB - which is why I am so confused
I'd probably just make a nandroid backup, move any files from internal to external that I wanted to keep, turn off phone, remove SD card, boot phone back up, go into SD card in menu settings, format the card then go into accounts and do a full factory reset. I would think that would get rid of any unknown bloat from the internal storage. Yes you'll have to set the phone up again but it might fix your running out of space problem. A nandroid restore might throw the crap back in there. I don't know.

Wiping the internal sdcard did the trick. Reloading everything was not what I wanted but it did solve the problem

Mine started giving me the low storage space warning once the MF9 update downloaded. I had to wipe the internal sd card completely. What a PITA.

that makes a lot of sense because mine did the same and the update notification wouldnt go away until I flashed the update. I guess next time I need to format the internal sd before I flash
