So I just watched a side by side comparison on youtube of video quality.. the kid shot them at the same time.. all default. Iphone4 owns the Evo .. absolutely not even close. Anyway.. question to the smarties... Are our phones capable of that and is it a matter of time before a video software update happens? I've shot a few vids and not too impressed .. but after watching the Iphone4's vid it kinda makes me sick. I'm assuming our 8 megapixel and 1ghz snapdragon should be able to at least come close if not be possibly better. ???? here's the link.. if it works>>>>>>>>>>>>

I love my Evo but I have to agree at the moment video quality is laughable.

I thought I could make things easy by just reading what others are saying but it's clear to me now that I just have to test everything out for myself. Another early RadioShack visit tomorrow morning. I'm going to test the heck outta the iPhone, side by side with the Evo.
One thing I have to admit is that Engadget's test video was nowhere near that smooth and felt on par with the Evo to me.

Looks like the Iphone video is stabilized somehow. Also, white balance and FPS are much greater on the Iphony. I was not impressed with my indoor EVO videos at all. I really hope that HTC releases a patch to help out.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the SD card? the iphone has the internal ssd hard drive which might write faster. I was reading this article on engadget this am and it came to mind. I could be wrong, but it kinda made sense. Is the sd card that comes with the phone have fast enough write access ?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/sd-cards-branded-with-an-upper-case-i-are-faster-yo/
Something is up..... cause my EVO takes WAAAY better video than the EVO in that clip. Wonder what he did to it, like maybe loaded a ton of apps to really eat up CPU and scratched the crap outta the lens or something... I don't know but I know my EVO takes better video. I just took a vid of my office here for test and it looked much better and smoother than that.

I am thinking of switching to the EPIC and giving my wife the evo ... The Epic seems awesome... Need to see how out turns out though

i think its too early to tell, i mean the evo has been rooted already and will continue to be supported in a pretty big way by the devs here, theres no telling if the samsung will have the same level of rootability.

True..it's just that screen and the processing power with the gyroscope of the epic is very tempting..
Give up an 8MP camera for a QWERTY keyboard... Nah, not worth it.
Gonna go ahead and keep my EVO for a while.
Yeah because our 8mp camera is just soo amazing...

Heh the evo's camera sucks.
Anyway, I'll hold into my evo until it launches sometime in the future and I'll probably pick it up. Looks to soundly beat the evo and the droid x. At least its already rooted the only issue will be samsungs encoded drivers.

Better than the 5MP I upgraded from when I switched from my Hero... Oh wait, that's the same camera on the Epic.
The EPIC is EVO Jr. EVO is the best phone on the market, even better than the iPhone 4.

I must agree
I don't know, spec-wise the epic is pretty compelling.
The 5MP camera will look better than the evos because the lower mp sensor will undoubtedly have less grain and better low-light pictures.
The qwerty is welcome, im not sure about the size but it's good news to me that it wont be as large as the evo in wideness.
I love the 4.3" screen on my evo, but 4" sounds like a great tradeoff.
It will surely fit better in the hand, which is very welcome for me.
The hummingbird IS a better processor.. GPU is great. End of story.
Super AMOLED is the best screen technology in the mobile biz. End of story.
The samsung is a better phone.
That said i will probably keep my evo because it looks so much better. LOL
If the framerate issues are fixed and froyo comes along quickly there isn't much of a reason to return the evo.
Either way i'm happy, but my 30-day window is ending soon and there isn't much news about when the Epic will arrive.

very good points..the only thing bothering me is as you said there is no release date, but i think i might take my chances and wait
The Galaxy S model will be released on every carrier, so the Epic will have plenty of support, if not more than the EVO. The specs are undoubtedly better than the EVO's in almost every way. The 45nm processor especially stands out since will mean better battery life.
I need to buy the EVO as soon as it comes back in stock, so I hope the Epic is released within my 30-day window in case I want to exchange.
EDIT: I just saw a video ( youtube (dot) com/watch?v=x31Tl4_F1Wo ) of Touchwiz and it looks TERRIBLE, even though the iPhone-like icons aren't bad. Unless TW can be easily disabled, I'm going with the EVO.

Talk About Being Bias.
And HTC Cameras Are Horrible...Just Because It Has More Megapixels Doesn't Make It Better..
With Pictures I've Seen With The iPhone, The iPhone Is Incredible (No Pun Intended)
The Incredible Can Barely Handle High Capacity SD Cards (16GB, 32GB)
I Know This For A Fact, My 16GB MicroSD Card Is Slow On This Phone,
And When I Pop It Into The Mytouch4G Or Another Newer Phone, It's Blazing Fast, So I Know This Is Not The SDCard's Fault.
Costs More? $199 For A 16GB iPhone And $199 For An 8GB DInc.. I Think The DInc Is More Expensive...
Now I'm Not Saying The iPhone Is A God Send, But Don't Put Android/Incredible On A Pedestal, Because This Phone Is Nothing Compared To A Lot Of Other Phones.
IPhone is the **** if you don't need customization.
Android is the **** if you need customization.
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
The DInc was one of the nicest cameras out there... The iPhone4 has that nice HDR effect though. FFC is a nice thing to have as well.
Only thing I think the iPhone4 has as a 1-up on the DInc is the build quality. It feels super sturdy. Granted, it is mostly glass, but it feels damn nice.
*EDIT*
Keep in mind, our phone is nearing the end of it's life as the most powerful phone out there. *sob*
The iphone is nice but for me I would still pick Android. I like the customization, home screen widgets and it runs flash. Flash and the widgets are the big ones.
First things first. Comparing iPhone 4 to Dinc is like comparing apples to oranges. Iphone 4 is apples newest and greatest device. Dinc is not the latest or greatest android device. So it really will come down to personal opinion. IMO I would take the Dinc any day over the iPhone 4 or their next model for that matter.

No, no it's not. Apples to oranges would be comparing the Thunderbolt to the iPhone 4. Both phones are comparable, and of the current VZW offerings, the iPhone is most similar to the INC. Oh, and good for you on your choice.

As far as the camera, cmon man you're really reaching there. I'll give you the fact that 720p recording is lame but the still photos are just as good.

I am anxious to see your comparison of the two phones! I will be watching this thread to see!
The real point here of having both is to evaluate aspects of the phones that go beyond raw stats. You should be thinking on usability tests and such... less so on storage and batteries and cameras. None of that stuff matters as much as the functional ease of the device. Of course it still comes down to opinion and user type to large degree... but I am curious how an inc user will adjust to iPhone. The relevance of the investigation to me depends on how you used your inc... so perhaps best to elaborate on that in comparisons.
Anyway... civility in opinions is always best

I started with the samsung vibrant and then switched to the epic because my girlfriend put me on an employee account. after modding the epic to every extreme i became bored and musta forgot what i had untill i lost it. My curiosity got the best of me and i returned the epic and switched to the evo.
I realized quick that is was all buzz. Not only is the sense ui full of lag and no ext4 partition but the camera quality dropped about 5000000000 notches from the samsung line.
I have taken pictures with the Vibrant at 5mp with NO FLASH and the image was crystal and full of depth with accurate color representation. I set the evo to the same settings and realized quick that i was getting better pictures on my old 1.3mp nokia bar phone camera.
If i could switch back i would in a heart beat.
I understand that dev's and evo fans will stick up for the evo as long as they have it. But you can not avoid the solid proof
The evo camera is horrible at best. If you are thinking about switching DONT.
Touchwiz is way better.
Odin flashing assures a solid write of all data to the internal sd
Epic comes with 16gb card.
epic camcorder records 720P TRU HD NO LAG VIDEO
I run an Audio and Visual company and own many cameras including the world famous RED camera.
when testing light sources with our meters compared to the quallity that the evo poops out of its capturing unit, it is very clear that the wonderful folks at HTC are scrambeling to figure out how samsung has blown them and their beloved evo out of the water. there is not a codec or fps fix in the world that will compensate for harware that was designed to save money insted of customers.
I have learned my lession and now carry around 2 phones. Even though my vibrants are not activated i still find it worth while to carry around a device that captures pictures and video equil to my cannon dslr with a 35mm chip.
BOO samsung all you like but the proof is in the pudding.
Instead of defending the evo maybe it would be wise to spend that energy accepting the problem while searching for a fix.

Yeah try CM7 Nightly build 6. You won't need all those mods and you will be pleased with the performance and battery life. The Evo is not the best phone. It was when it first came out, but many phones have hardware that surpass it. Why buy a phone for the camera? If you are serious about taking good photos, use a camera and not a phone. Just sayin...

Evo battery is better. Even after consistant flash and no reconditioning. I have cameras. GOOD ONES. I just enjoy being able to take random pics and actually have one of our photo guys doctor it up. We run a Production company that is known for its quality. It would just be nice (In my career choice) to be able to publish and use the random photos that have great quality. I got that from the epic and vibrant. Just a little let down(Im just syain)

The screen is so much better than the XL but its a bit disappointing that it still has a 5MP camera when the XL has an 8MP Camera.
I've fallen for it and will hopefully have mine in my hands tomorrow Will submit a system dump asap. But still gotta figure out how to root it :?

Exactly....look at a picture taken with a very old Nikkon D40 and compare it with any size MP point and shoot, it's not even close in quality. This is like everyone complaining about the lack of an exynos processor, doesn't seem to have any lag in any video or review I have seen. Specs are fine to use, just need to keep them in perspective and use them appropriately.

TI omap 4460 is a 1.5ghz processor that is underclocked for the GN, hence it can be clocked to that for sure and probably up to 1.8 or so. They designed ICS to be optimized for TI Omap processors. Now, I am less impressed with the gpu that comes with it, it is definitely the lowest powered of the top mobile chips. This is a beast of a phone and I hope we see some news on an HSPA version in the US.

LOL. Yeah, it is big. I just visited that site vonapets url'd and compared all my current phones (N1, SGS, Nexus S, Galaxy S II, Thunderbolt, Droid Charge) to the Galaxy Nexus: http://www.phone-size.com/?s=12,13,65,7,85,3 , and it's not much larger, and actually ~25% thinner, than the largest of my phones (the Charge) which fits easily in my slacks and jeans front pockets. Someone wearing painted on jeans might have issues I guess.
The Charge and SGS II are just a little too large for my hands to use comfortably one-handed. My thumb can't reach the bottom left of the phone without putting it in a precarious balanced position. The big 4.3" screens are great, though. I'm afraid the new Nexus might cross that threshold of being to big to be practical for me, but I'll still probably get one. LOL

This attitude. Now that everyone has read a few articles on sensor technology it seems EVERYONE feels the need to school people on cameras.
Yes, it's true, MP doesn't have that much to do with it. But the Galaxy Nexus camera is piss poor. It produces results almost identical to the NS camera, which i feel was essentially the same as the N1 before it. Look how far mobile cameras have come in the HTC titan and the iPhone 4S. For a flagship phone in this price range, this is simply unacceptable. For Samsung, even moreso as the shooter in the GS2 is much better. No wonder people make the 5MP 8MP comparison.
People need to stop being apologetic towards companies, and start calling them out on their mistakes. The processor in the Galaxy Nexus is acceptable, but the GPU is really not up to par with today's superphones. The plastic case construction is an improvement over the fisher-price NS, but still cheap garbage compared to the designs of HTC and Apple, yet they charge the same price.
Enough. Stop trying to school people and school the companies instead. It's the only way we'll get better products.
