[Q] Help with my usb? - Continuum General

Hi, I'm new around here although I check in periodically to see if you guys have anything cool that I can put on my Continuum My phone's usb broke recently, but luckily I still have one from my old phone from like 2/3 years ago, the LG Chocolate Touch. Anyways, I want to install a ROM on my phone, but I can't seem to connect the data. It has let me connect the data before, just at random times. Like, it charges fine but I can't access the contents of my sdcard. Is there any way to fix this? (Sorry if this is the wrong forum, as I said, I'm new here, and I'm in a bit of a rush.)

I'm almost positive I did.

I've used USB cables from both LG and Palm to transfer data and even install roms on my Continuum. Most cables are built exactly the same, except for some Motorola and Blackberry cables I think. So I would think it has to be your drivers, try unistalling and reinstalling if they are already on your computer.
Edit: Also, my computer seems to recognize my phone faster if USB Debugging is turned on.

USB issue

All of a sudden my pc is not recognizing phone as a usb drive.. It was working perfectly since day one with this phone but since yesterday it wont recognize it.. And even if it does, it takes a very long time. ive treid uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling, as well as turning debugging on and off. My pc is running windows 7 64bit.. I have also tried different roms and nothing.. When connected in debugging mode, it recognizes it immediately and installs drivers by i still cannot view my storage card.. Any help would be appreciatied.. Thanks
Install pdanet on your computer. When it gets to the part about driver installation, select samsung and voila.

Seconded. I bought a cheap charging kit and the cable would charge but would not allow file transfer. Took it back, bought another cable and it's fine.
Either the phone is finicky about cables, or it might just require a particular type (probably USB 2.0).
I had this issue also last week. I tried another cable and it worked fine.
But now I am having issues with my usb ports in general. Now they just stop working every once in a while and I am required to restart my laptop.
Don't know if the two problems are related.
Try different USB ports. Like the ones on the back on your computer.
I've been having the same issue. I went out to Radio Shack and bought a new data cable. So far all ports on my laptop, winXP pro 32bit, and my win7 64bit desktop have not had problems.
I'm thinking that the USB cable supplied by Samsung is crap. I tested them both out on the same machine, same port; the new one worked fine, while the stock cable only gave me adb access.
I had this same exact problem. I kept thinking the phone was going bad or something. I tried the cable that came with my Epic & the one that came with my Moment, both didn't work... for some reason it worked find on a Mac though. So when I gave my mom my Moment when I got the Epic she bought an extra micro-USB cable and I decided to try that one, for some odd reason, that one worked.
Still don't know exactly what was going on but a third-party cable fixed the problem for me.
Hope this helps.

STILL having trouble with download mode!

Okay.. I'm almost on the verge of being desperate for a fix for this. I still can't get my windows or Linux computer to recognize my phone in download or mass storage mode. I've talked to adrynalyne and he told me to try heimdall. No luck. There's a new post made about this issue nearly every day on here.
At this point I would be happy with finding a way to flash the modem without using Odin. I know we have a ton of AMAZING devs here, do you guys think we can try to figure this out? I think it is definitely something beyond drivers, considering the sudden increase in people having the problem.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but have you tried all of the usb ports, even the ones on the back of the pc? And how about rebooting phone while connected to pc? Usb debugging on, off... all of these worked for me at one time.

Its not a dumb question. Thank you for trying to help. Yes, I have tried just about anything you can think of. Tried Linux, tried windows, tried 64 bit drivers, tried 32 bit drivers, tried every single USB port. Nothing.

Firewall? I remember a firewall causing problems with my old phone. I didn't check for my fascinate, got lazy and just turned it off before doing anything. I highly recommend not being connected to anything other than your phone if you do turn off your firewall.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Thanks for the suggestion. I have even tried that. As far as I know Ubuntu doesn't really have a firewall. although I could be wrong. And none of the devs seem to be able to come up with anything either.

Based on the described symptoms, I would say either the USB port on the phone has bit the dust, or you have a bad USB cable. I would try a different, known good USB cable and see what happens.

A little far-fetched, but I'll try anyway ...
From Windows:
- Don't plug in your Fascinate
- Create a new SYSTEM environment variable called "DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES" and set it to "1" (without the quotes)
- Open Device Manager
- View / Show Hidden Devices
- If you see any of the following, delete them (right-click on the device and select "uninstall", check the box that says "Delete the driver software..." if available:
ADB Interface / SAMSUNG Android Composite ADB Interface
Disk Drives / SAMSUNG SCH-I500 Card USB Device
DVD/CD-ROM Drives / SAMSUNG UMS CD-ROM USB Device
DVD/CD-ROM Drives / SAMSUNG CD-ROM USB Device
Modems / SAMSUNG * (* = anything that starts with SAMSUNG)
Ports (COM & LPT) / SAMSUNG *
Universal Serial Bus Controllers / SAMSUNG *
- Uninstall "SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones" from Control Panel / Programs and Features
- Re-install the proper Samsung drivers "Generic_CDMA_i500_Showcase_USB_Driver_V1.3.550.0.msi".
- See what happens when you plug it in next time and let us know
So I followed the instructions to a T. It installed all of the drivers when I plugged the phone in. But get the USB device not recognized when i go to download mode.
Strangely, Odin does recognize the phone when I put it into dun mode. But it won't flash anything.

I would definately try a new cable. I used one that was identical to the one that came with my fascinate but it was from an old phone of mine and it had the same problem, and make sure its a "data" cable

Sorry this didn't have any positive effects for you. I have to agree with the others at this point ... try a new cable. If that doesn't work ... um ... you may be in a bad place

USB Not working

Hey guys so I cant for the life of me get my phone to show up as a mass storage device and I am trying to root my phone and I cant get into it to transfer the roms. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers about 10 times now and I cant get it to work when I click the H drive that it makes it just says please insert a disk.
Anybody know? IT worked for me once a few days ago and hasnt since.
have you tried a different USB Port? I was having the same problem, the USB port on the front of my desktop would work for ADB but would not come up as a mass storage device...I switched to the one on the back and it popped up with no problem.

Just tried 3 different ports but still no luck.
This is going to sound silly, but try installing PDANet on your computer.
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php
This has fixed many drivers issues I have had with this phone.
I have PDA net and maybe I'm not using it right but I'm not sure. Like I said I got in once right after I installed pdanet I think.

You don't have to use PDANet - it just installs the drivers for the phone.
If you already have it, it may be worth uninstalling and reinstalling to see if this repairs the driver issue.
ok so I did that now when I have pda net connected it it comes up but as drive G but still doesnt open.
Are you sure you don't have the Development Mode box checked under Settings --> Applications --> Development? This bypasses the USB mode when connected to a computer.
You can have development checked, make sure you mount the phone when attached. pda net does a great job of installing the drivers. also use a usb port off of the motherboard not a remote one. possibly you should try a different usb cord. Several people have had issues with their cords

I'm trying this now and it doesn't seem to be working for me. My notebook just doesn't recognize my phone. It seems straightforward, am I missing something?
Ok so I tried all of it. I got a different cord and a different port and i plug it it press turn on usb storage the drive shows up on my computer but then it says please insert disk when I click on it. This is pretty frustrating. I dont know if its the computer even though its brand new. Could there be an anyivirus or something stopping it?
Ok so now all of the sudden I get it to connect after leaving it there for like 15 minutes unplugging it and plugging it back in.
Another solution if others failed
This happened to me as well.
Nexus S 4G.
USB Storage not working.
Connect to PC and it charges, but does not connect as a Storage Device.
The little notification thing not there at all.
Tried everything listed in this thread and other threads.
Tried wiping data/factory reset.
Tried wiping cache.
nothing worked.
Finally I tried wiping dalvic cache and that worked.
I have no idea what dalvic cache is, but after wiping that and rebooting, all was fine and well again.
If you don't know how to wipe the dalvic cache, it's an option in ClockworkMod Recovery.
NEVER MIND! I was wrong - it was a fluke - it worked for a minute and went bad again - I need to figure out how to clean it I think
91% Isopropyl Alcohol + toothbrush + 10 minutes of back and forth trying to get it to work = clean micro USB port = all is well
FINALLY!!
I had this exact issue. Spent weeks trying to fit it with drivers with no look. If its not the cable its the usb on the device. I cleaned mine out with a ear bud. Must have had some gunk on the connectors.
I already open this kind of thread months ago..
Cant solve it..sent it to sammy center..
Do you want to know what did they said?
There are colony if fungi at the socket usb cable of my nexus s..
What a joke..haha..they cleaned it..and problem solved!

Question for those that use Odin

Hey all. What kind of USB cable do you? I cant get my recignized by Odin. Ive tried every port on my computer, restarted phone computer, took battery out of phone and it still wont connect. I think its the cable. So can anyone guide me to one that will work? Thanks
Just buy a Blackberry cable they are very thick and nice but any other type of Micro usb cable works better than the stock one ...
Just curious, have you installed the phone drivers on your PC?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yes I have. 3 out of the 4 installed fine.
I use a blackberry cable. Never had an issue
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
You might even be able to get a Sprint store to exchange your crappy Samsung cable for the Blackberry one if they have one. It might take a little convincing, but most stores will have a small stockpile of cables from return phones, and if you explain to them that you have read online that the blackberry one works better for data transfer, they will probably exchange it.
I've also used the Palm Pre cable, and it worked fine as well.
Maybe I'm lucky, but I've had no problems with the cable that came with my epic.
HTC cables work well... like the one that comes with the EVO
I use the cord from my old Samsung Moment, It actually came with a separate USB Data cord. I think just about any cord will be better than the ones that shipped with the Epic.
I've always used my epic USB. Is ur phone disconnected from the PC before u enter download mode... if so try resetting ur PC, opening Odin, putting your phone in dl mode, than connecting the USB to your phone

[Q] Can't access storage via USB

This is getting frustrating. Have the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 completely stock in black. My girlfriend has the white one. We can't connect either one via USB to transfer songs and such. So far I've installed the driver, reinstalled them, formatted and did it all over again with no luck. The computer just continues to make the noise that it does when you connect a USB device. Sometimes it'll do it 20 times in a row or so. Never successfully recognizes the device.
This is my first time having this type of issue with an Android although I've never owned a Samsung before. Mostly HTC devices. Any help would be appreciated. I've done searches on the forum and didn't have much luck.
Q: How do I connect my S4 to the computer so I can transfer some songs to it.
If you end up rooting your s4 usb mass storage enabler on the market helped me get my tablet to recognize my s4. Other than that I'm not sure why your computer isn't recognizing it. Good luck!

It's definitely weird. I have friends with the phone who didny even need to install the drivers. Unfortunately we only have the one pc.

If you have any drivers from previous phones try uninstalling them. Even htc sync has caused problems in the past. I'm no expert by any means but I've troubleshooted plenty.

Try a different cable and definitely try a different USB port. Sometimes windows gets messed up and won't accept a new device on the same port.

Tried that. Even reformatted. I've been through about 5 cables. I doubt that's the issue. I actually reformatted again last night.
I use Airdroid for all of my file transfers. It's fast but requires wifi.

This has been my only issue with S4. Kind of frustrating but I know there has to be a solution to transfer files via usb. I almost wonder if it has something to do with my hardware. It's pretty standard though.

Ok so an update on this issue. Still haven't came up with a solution.
Since my last post we've moved from Sprint to T-Mobile. Decided to stick with the S4. New phone with the sane exact issue. Reformatted, reinstalled drivers.
She also got a new laptop and wouldn't you know it both phones work perfect without installing drivers or anything.
I'd really like to track this down so I'm going to give as much detail as possible.
Both phones are stock.
Both work on her laptop. Neither will work with my PC.
I've gone to thr device manager and manually updated the driver. The comp recognizes my phone by name. On a good day I can browse. It'll still randomly reconnect so transfers are impossible.
The computer has 8 usb 2.0 ports. I've tried them all. We have quite a few micro usb cables. Tried them all.
It still feels like a driver issue. Possibly some kind of issue with my motherboard? Why haven't I had an issue with anything else? Would a dedicated usb card make a difference?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
