Nook using MIUI - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am using MIUI on my Nook and i am feeling dumb not using this for so many months! This is super!
However i have some questions:
- is there a way to have the status bar at the bottom andhace the soft buttons on it, as in CM7?
- battery drains super fast.. any reccommendations for this?
- is there a was to install the official nook reader on this? I cant find a reader to replace it yet!

I suppose no solutions for this

1) I don't know about MIUI interface, so I can't say
2) Make sure you're using a kernel of .32 for deep sleep. .29 Didn't support this and caused the battery to drain in a couple days, even standing by.
3) You should be able to install the Nook app from the market.

I have been using Miui for awhile now. Love this rom!
No, no status bar at the bottom. Use button savior or soft keys. I have heard others use zmooth, but button savior is my personnal choice.
What do you mean by bad battery life? If I leave my nook on standby, the battery hardly drains at all. You could try a re-install and see if that helps. Also a few reboots help the rom settle in.
I am using the nook app from the market. works fine. I don't think there is a way to use the original reader on a custom rom.

Great thanks for the tips
I use zmooth, is the only one that is a bit out of the way of the screen. It would have been super if we could have bar at bottom, and also keys on it..
I downloaded Nook also, but i would use it, if i was able to include also my sdcard content on it, and synchronise these with all my devices...
Should we wait for the topic update, or just update MIUI when an update exists in the official MIUI program?
How do i find my kernel?

For the ebook reader I like Alkido and fbreader. have you tried either of those out yet?

Yes, thanks!
Mantano is super, and especially for PDF's i was amazed!
I was using ezPDF until now and the lag in turning page by page was a lot, but with Mantano i was surprised, amazed etc etc!!!
It will definitely remain on my Nook for a long time!
However does any one know if Mantano creates a copy of the file in another folder of Nook? Because it takes sometime in importing any books or pdf's to the program...

I recently discovered MIUI as well, and wow. Troubles be gone! Works great once you set the DPI to the standard DPI again and replace the default launcher. I think this may replace my nightlies permanently.
The method for softkeys, however, needs some work. At 160DPI, I found it hard to press the tiny button on button savior, and sometimes the button gets in the way. I may look into that zmooth at some point, but reviews on that state it gets in the way as well. Wish they'd implement a true honeycomb style one with a bigger button we could stick in the bottom corner.
All my ebooks are Kindle, as they seem to be the cheapest, so I don't know what the best PDF reader is. I kind of like the new Google Apps one in the browser, but probably not what you're looking for.
Battery drain is worse than the nightlies, but it's not terrible. I can go a full day on a single charge. The one thing that worries me is that my charge at night doesn't seem to be charging as quickly which means my NC hardly ever has a full charge in the morning. Something is seriously wrong with that.

I've had miui on an sdcard for awhile now. It is very nice looking but I'm leery of moving away from cm7.
zmooth and button savior work great but take some getting used to.
Are you guys using the paid for or free version of Mantano? $7.49 is a lot to pay for a reader.
Anyone hear anything about when andmers might put out another update?

How do I disable the annoying clock that comes on when on Samsung Desk Dock?

Anyone figure out how to not make the clock appear when docked? It's like pulling teeth to try and get out of it... ugh
The only way I found is to hit the Recent Apps button to return to whatever apps you had up before. It does make it frustrating because I wanted to use the tablet while docked. I suggest opening up all the apps you plan to use first and then docking. This definitely needs to be fixed with the next update.

Yeah I read it in another post too... WOW, that's utterly a deal killer. This dock is going back to best buy first thing in the morning. For $35 that's intolerable not to be able to work around.
I have the Samsung Infuse 4G and the Samsung OEM desk dock for it, and all you have to do to disable it is to remove the Samsung Dock app... but I'm guessing they've baked it into their version of 3.1... I'm assuming the issue will go away once a clean Android stock comes out or custom ROMs, but the dock's odd, too-slanted viewing angle was annoying me anyhow, so it's going back to BBY, hehe
The only way around this that I have been able to find so far is to delete the DeskClock.apk from the system/app folder. Obviously this is only for root users.
That kind of sucks because it leaves you without a clock. I tried putting the stock honeycomb clock from the xoom on the 10.1 and the desk clock still came right back up when connected to the dock.
Use Root Explorer and navigate to the app. Should be in System/App. Then rename it to ClockOld or something. That should disable it.
I am rooted so I just froze "[ALARMS] Clock 2.0.3" with Titanium Backup. This does not effect the clock in the lower right of the stock Honeycomb launcher and that's enough for me.
The freez did the trick!!
What yiou have to do is a hard reset, which is the factory reset. You lose all data but it seems to be working for me now once i did it.

[Q] How's CM7 on the KF?

I've seen a few of the home screens that people have posted of their KFs with CM7. How is it?
It looks really nice with the Honeycomb/ICS (?) theme.
I just wanted to know how it is for the people that use it. Is it buggy at all?
Thanks!

I had a question regarding CM7 on Kindle Fire:
I have it all set up and good to go; however, when I select the double down arrow button, the CM7 bar goes away. How do I get it back without exiting the video I'm watching?
I've got two Kindle Fires...
One was on 6.2 which I rooted and started playing around with. It picked up the 6.2.1 update and I'm kinda bummed with it. Need to re-root it and tidy up a few things.
The other one I've been holding on to for using in the car. Was kinda waiting till BT was figured out. But I had time yesterday and moved it from 6.2 to CM7. I can not stand my 6.2.1 Fire any more. I like a really simple experience and CM7 does that for me. Post Xmas I'll move the 6.2.1 Fire to CM7 or ICS if it's ready by then.
Was playing around with TetherGPS on the CM7 Fire today in the car, very cool. Just need to figure out a mounting system for it. Once BT is figured out I'll be able to use Torque for ODBII data and get more geeky.
I had problems with the home button not working and didn't like the notification bar and tools bar at the bottom. Frankly it was a bit buggy for my tastes.

Everybody is saying that. But for me the scrolling in 6.2.1 was way smoother than in cm7. Also adw launcher ex run flawlessly in 6.2.1 in cm7 it's a bit choppy.
But other than that, I won't go back to stock. I really love cm7, have it on my phone, too.
Cm7 is really cool and highly modifiable. Its a crime to use kindle with stock. Only i had to restart cm7 once, If it doesnt keep doing it, its perfect.

I'm greatly enjoying CM7, hoping some of the last wrinkles will be ironed out soon. (Not able to play some apps like Asphalt 6, which work on stock rom, the MAC address issue, nothing major but still troublesome.)
Yeah, some apps don't work. But the ones that do are much faster (Including Tapatalk)

Pros and Cons of CM7 on KF?

Hi, the reasons I've bought the Kindle Fire was that I wanted a cheap tablet on one hand (whilst it's quite capable HW-wise) and it's ability to be customized (it's capacity to have 3rd party roms on it, etc) on the other. On that second point I'm sure that the community will work its magic in the coming months: my dilemma however is with what I should do with the Fire I *currently* have...
I've received it a couple of days ago and I found out that the vanilla ROM seems quite alright on in itself. It seems limited, but as long as one roots and installs the Market (almost) the whole of Android force is unleashed. The UI is not always functional but it does feel as a breath of fresh air in a landscape which is tatterered with clones of the same thing (Google's UI)...
Anyhow the purpose of this thread -as the topic title states- is to weigh whether the installation of CM7 on KF is a justifiable move (given what we have at hand) for everyday use. I do own other android devices as well and installing CM flavours there was -often- an easy move given the benefits (more hardware capabilities, cleaner/faster UI, etc).
But on KF things seem to be less clear cut. For one CM7 doesn't seem to do more than what the stock rom already achieves in either the hardware side of things (no new "function" is enabled) *or* the software side (the lag is still there, and Amazon has/had already done an admirable job to keep her device working without the need of any physical buttons).
So my question is to those who already made the move to CM7 for daily usage. Was it worth it for any non experimental purposes? Were there any discernable benefits compared to stock? (I mean considering how the situation is right *now*, not how things *can* be).
Thanks for your attention and sorry for the length of this post, it's only that this is the first time that I find myself in front of such a dilemma. Before KF I would often install CM on my device no questions asked, but now things seem less clear cut. Your opinions will be valued - again, thank you.
For everyday use i find CM7 more useful simply because the Fire launcher is convoluted. Nothing you cant achieve with a launcher, however launchers tend make pior use of the sceeen real estate. Also no need to worry aboit the root removing OTA updates.
The only downside i have with CM7 right now is the lacl of volume softkeys

"Volume Control" from the Android Market is great - it puts a volume slider that auto-hides on the edge of the screen.
Pros: It does everything the kindle does at stock and then more (If you want to use emulators and games, I would recommend it).
Cons: It is hard to set up the stock amazon apps on CM7, although possible. There is also a small chance of bricking your device if you do everything totally wrong and for some reason (like not following directions) cannot unbrick using the known methods.
The main difference for me has been that I can use different PDF software to read PDFs more clearly and that I can play emulators on it.
A con for cm7 right now is the CPU constantly being at 1008mhz when wifi is on...at least for me. I tried the mac address fix but it didn't work.

For me I feel CM7 gives you that tablet feel more so than the Amazon UI. Having customization is always one of the main things I look for. I do have Amazon Prime however I hardly use any of their services besides the shipping. (Netflix > Amazon Instant Video)
Also if you do everything right and make a back up of your stock, you can always revert back to it if you don't like what you see.
The browser is smother on cm7 silk loads a bit faster, but the scrolling feels smoother on cm7, also in stock firmware when you go full screen you cant get rid of the gray bar, on cm you can hide it and show it as much as you want.
How ever... i feel that battery life is a bit shorter, but not much, I don't know if anyone else has that feeling.

imo this should be included with the rom
I am running CM7 as a daily ROM at the moment, and I can say that it is much better than the Amazon stock ROM. When running stock you have to worry about OTA updates that can potentially remove root access and prevent it from being acquired again (until a workaround is found). Also, for me at least, CM7 seems to run much better than the stock ROM did, with little to no lag.

Even if you have Amazon Prime you can use Amazon services still. You just have to download the apps onto CM7. I have done this, but I forgot where I got the apk files.
A couple more notes on CM7 v Stock
I no longer have the issue where the Fire wont wake and I have to hold power for a reboot.
Inputs seem more responsive, I no longer have to press things multiple times or them to work, mainly back button was problematic.
Much greater app compatibility in the Marketplace.
Also, thanks for he volume control, just what I needed.

Interesting. I may have been misinformed. I have Amazon Prime, have for years. I realize that I can still install the Kindle app and other Amazon apps, but can I still receive Amazon Prime free Streaming videos and free Kindle owners lending library, etc. if I switch over to CM7?
I rooted just the other day, I run cm7 on all my other devices, I do not have interest in it beyond the app swap option and swipe lock screen. The stock build + market is all I need at this point. When cm7 develops into a fully stable option I will certainly switch but for now I don't reccomend it.

Question about power saving mode

Hi guys
I'm a recent convert from an iPhone so please be gentle! If my phone goes into power saving mode, it reduces the screen brightness, reduces the screen timeout etc. but when I plug it back in and charge it, even though its back up to 100% the power save settings are still in place, and I have to manually put the settings back.
Its this right? I would have thought it would automatically remove the power save settings once the battery goes above 30%?
Thanks!
Robsa
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
You need to configure "Custom Power Saving Mode" and specify the battery level you want it to be triggered at. It should turn off automatically then after your phone is charged beyond this point - but this feature is a bit bugged so it might not work as intended.
Yeah I too have to manually turn it off, But there is a toggle in the status bar, So its just 1 tap away
Thanks guys.I am still getting used to a phone that crashes and doesn't work as intended sometimes! I do love I it though!

Massive pro tip: Use something like Llama (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kebab.Llama&hl=en) and configure your own "power saving mode" instead. It's just a matter of making rules like "if battery is < 30%, disable wifi" and the like.
The built-in one is a bit crap to start with, and kind of broken anyway.

That's thanks to Samsung's bloatware. Consider AOSP Android like CM9, only then will you see how fast, smooth and relatively error-free Android really is.

[Q] Best Reasons to Nooter?

Hello Folks!
I just picked up a Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight. It's a sweet little device. But I'm addicted to rooting and loading custom ROMs on all of my tablets. So I'm tempted to do that to my Nook Simple Touch. However, doing that to an e-ink device is fundamentally different than on all of my other LCD-screen tablets because most apps/interfaces aren't geared toward an e-ink display.
So... I'd like to ask a couple questions:
What drove you to change your Nook Simple Touch from stock to custom ROM?
What functions do you love best about having it custom?
Do you miss anything about having it stock?
What do you like least about having it custom?
Thanks in advance for your input!

They are DRM books. There are a couple of readers you can install that do ADE DRM. I used Aldiko for a while until someone pointed out a working version of Overdrive Media Console. See this thread. I believe Mantano also does ADE DRM. Search the forum for a working version.

Ah, sorry, I didn't make myself clear; even the stock Nook reader does ADE DRM, once authorised by the Windows ADE application (Aldiko can authorise itself, if a valid Adobe ID is supplied to it and it has Internet connectivity). My library supplies .acsm files which contain a link to the actual epub, which then needs to be authorised by the Windows ADE application before it can be copied to the Nook and read. So without something on Android to parse .acsm files and authorise the epubs, I can't download directly on my Nook. If you've got a solution to that, I'd be very interested in hearing it!

Yup, as I said no more PC download and copy to the NST. Both OMC & Aldiko launch the browser from within the app and allow you to browse the library, checkout books and download them directly on the NST. They take care of parsing the acsm file, getting authorization and downloading the actual epub file. It still baffles me why we have to root to get this feature as this has been available on Android phones for years. It makes no sense for dedicated reading devices not to have the feature. Its probably marketing morons at B&N that don't want you to have an easy way to read books for free so you'll buy from them.

Yup, as I said no more PC download and copy to the NST. Both OMC & Aldiko launch the browser from within the app and allow you to browse the library, checkout books and download them directly on the NST. Aha, yes, I see now I've tried it in Alidko! My library isn't on Overdrive, but adding it as a catalog to Aldiko works. The only snag appears to be that the browser doesn't handle deeply-nested web sites terribly well, and begins ignoring clicks on links after a few levels. But it'd do in a pinch. Thanks!
Will using a Custom ROM improve the terrible battery life?
I am being abit vague, I bought the Nook Simple Touch and on the box it said 'Battery lasts 2 months with wifi off and 30 minutes reading per day'. I hardly ever read and I only bought this for my holiday and also got it for £29. I charged the NST up and ive noticed over a week the battery has completely diminished.
Wifi is off and ive done no reading. All the decide seems to do is change pictures on the screen saver all the time.

Short answer: Yes.
Slightly longer answer: You can keep stock rom but rooting and tweaking makes a big difference. Changing the kernel and setting the cpu frequency using setcpu so improves battery life alot. Stop things syncing improves battery life alot.
If you don't want barnes and noble stuff (if your using say cool reader) then even more so.
Remember don't switch NST fully off it actually chews more battery than you think in that mode.
Also don't force nst to go asleep by pressing power button just let it timeout into screensaver.
I think remember someone said somewhere with everything tweaked the unit dropped 1 or 2 percent per day when not used.
That's odd that your battery experience has been so poor. I just got my NSTG on Monday and I've been reading on it a lot, plus I have backed it up, installed a new ROM, wiped it, restored it, probably five times now just messing around. I keep going back to stock ROM.
Anyway, I charged it Monday and I've got 84% battery left. I know I've spent several hours reading and at least a couple hours reading with the glowlight on. So for me, that's pretty darn good battery life to have only used 16% in five days of heavy use. Sure that won't last me the 2 months that they're quoting but, I'm not using it 30 minutes a day, I'm using it much more.

I have also just bought one so I can't claim any expertise, however, this sounds odd. I just let mine go to sleep and it always shows the same picture of trees. If yours is changing its picture then it must have something running to do so which will run the battery down.
Perhaps someone with more knowledge can say why yours is doing this?

Yeah, the stock browser sucks. Then again, pretty much every browser I've tried on the NST works poorly. I believe you can use another browser to download the ACSM file and then go into Aldiko and import it. Not as seamless but may make navigating your library site possible.
Well I've been on holiday this week and I can say the battery life is terrible. I must of used it 2 or 3hours per day reading only 400 pages and after 6 days the battery went flat. Luckily I don't read all the time, I kinda envy kindle owners for the battery life

Did you leave wifi on? I get MUCH better life than that with wifi off.

I've never had a battery drain problem so I can't give you any solutions. I see a good 3 or 4 weeks or more with the kind of usage you describe. You might want to read through this thread on possible battery drain solutions. Also, do a search on battery in this forum for some other threads.
I use my rooted NTS with XCSoar when I fly on glider.
It's very useful because contrast on the sunlight is awesome.
I use all fiches from custom rom:
FastScreen
UsbHost
UsbSound

Note that Barnes & Nobles' stated life of 2 months is only for half an hour of reading per day. So your 6 days is the equivalent of somewhere between 24 and 36 B&N days. More if you turn lots of pages.
