Soo yes I have searched but i'm a bit confused still about keywords, maybe pc analogy help?
rom is like an os version of a pc
theme is just how your menus look
kernel?
modem?
any must read guide to learn all of this terminology?
why would i want eh17, which i have on, over ec05?
thanks for the help
kernels are your kernels and drivers, as usual, and modem would be like your wifi files and the files that would run a mobile broadband unit, i guess
Say ROM is more like the BIOS and kernel like the OS but like a PC they have to work together. Modem is the software that drives the hardware radios. So like maybe network software driving a router? Or the software that controls the physical modem on your PC.

OS is what you see and experience. The kernel is what runs the OS. Modem powers data.
wow
wow thanks everyone for the replies i'm really getting to understand this stuff better, so .. whats eh17 a modem?
and some roms come with a kernel and some dont?

Most roms come with a kernel, unless it says so, otherwise it wouldn't boot. If it doesn't, it says to flash a kernel after. Eh17 is a ROM, but includes a new modem and kernel. Samsung roms (typically) have new modems and kernels in their updated roms.
EH17 is basically a build number in a date code. It is also the label of the modem that comes with that build. E is for 2011, H is translated into a number for the month which is 8 for August and 17 is the day.

let me explain too
Samsung latest leak is EH17 (which prepackages both EH17 Rom + EH17 Modem)
but if you would like too, you can use Eh17 Rom with older Modems like EH06, EC05 EG22, etc...
or you can use older Roms EH06, EC05 EG22 etc.... with different Modems including the latest EH17 Modem
The reason behind this mix and match, some roms may react differently to certain modems.. like some people say that when they use EC05 modem with whatever rom they have they get better signal or better battery life or maybe even to improve the GPS reception?
but the best advice is to follow what the the developer of the rom says... like for example, when Decad3nce recommend using the EH17 modem with his CM7 Rom (which is based on EH17 Rom btw)... you should do so.
I hope this answer was helpful to you and others maybe

Hi
You know maybe already some of my work even if this is my first post in the captivate forums.
Let me introduce you the stock+Voodoo stable kernels.
Those are built injecting Voodoo lagfix inside an original Samsung kernel built specifically for Captivate.
It comes with extensions like "su" and also ClockWorkMod recovery as default recovery.
Voodoo lagfix converts /system, /cache, /dbdata and /data to Ext4 with optimized parameters for speed but also guaranteeing data integrity.
Also, it configures the write behavior of Linux to prevent lag from happening, plus apply some memory management providing a better balance than stock settings.
Designgears help a lot during the development of this new stable release, testing endlessly new experimental code I was writing Thanks!
What it's not: voodoo sound, voodoo sharpness. Those improvements needs kernels built from sources.
Froyo only versions for now, I'll build Eclair version later.
update.zip you can flash with ClockWorkMod recovery (not 2e or 3e)
UCJJ4+Voodoo http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+...k+Voodoo-Froyo-I897-UCJJ4-unsigned-update.zip
UCKB1+Voodoo http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+...k+Voodoo-Froyo-I897-UCKB1-unsigned-update.zip
.tar you can flash with Odin
UCJJ4+Voodoo http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+Voodoo/tarballs/stock+Voodoo-Froyo-I897-UCJJ4.tar
UCKB1+Voodoo http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+Voodoo/tarballs/stock+Voodoo-Froyo-I897-UCKB1.tar

Well, this is a Captivate modem, designed to work with Captivate more than Frankenstein phones
I did the same for Vibrant kernels if you prefer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870480
The main target for these kernel are users using "standard" ROM, as most user do, with a kernel they can trust.
Guys, decide

let me se if i get it this is to be used with stock ROMS only? or i can be used with custom roms like perception, cognition & axura??
Cog and Auxura would probably be ok. I haven't tried it yet though. The "stock" he is referring to, I think, is Captivate based Froyo Roms (ji6, jj4).
do it work with JPU roms like Darky 5.2?
Does not work in axura
is not working with axura 2.2 i have no audio in phone call i can't heard nothing
just in case it matters i have JL3 modem with axura 2.2 any suggestions?
i used the odin version and flash it in pda section of odin is that the correct way to do it?

I just rooted my Epic, and I need to know, what is the best, most stable Froyo rom out?
Sent from my Epic 4G
they're all awesome.
They are all (mostly) stable.
Try one on and see how it fits.
If you don't like it, flash another. It's not too terribly addicting.
It all depends on what you are looking for. Me personally I like the Frankenstein rom but I had radio issues and switched to the midnight rom and it runs very well.

Why do questions like this even get asked? If there were ROMs that were inferior in every way, such that preference had no bearing... they wouldn't be on the first page or two of the forum.
You are going to have a favorite. Go start trying stuff like everyone else did.
Like I've said a million times that this question was asked. What works for others might not work for you. Flash to you find one you like
Sent From Da Hood.
When I first started flashing I had the same questions and it is nice to be pushed in the right direction. Which gain it is all personal preference. Some roms run better than others but then some roms have the theming that some people are looking for. So my suggestion is read through some of them and the change logs look at some of the screenshots in the threads and flash it if you like what you see. Once you have flashed a couple times you won't hesitate to do it again and again and again to try the different ones there are. I think I have tried 7 or 8 different roms on my epic and 7 or 8 when I had my evo and I was constantly switching from one to the next to the next back to one I had previously and so on depending on the updates that had been applied and the different changes that were made. So try them all then go back to what you like. When you have found what you like stick with it until another version comes out with an update try it and see if you like it. It does get a little bit addicting. It is very hard to brick an epic because of the capabilities of flashing back using odin. So don't hesitate in flashing as many as you like.
Thanks everyone, I'll start trying some tonight.
Edit: ok I found one that looks promising but I have no idea how these modem things work. I never had to do that to install roms on my hero. Anyway, how do I install a modem?

I'd be interested to see how different it is. I liked your last version for the most part, but boot up time was way too long. Would be nice to see the additional apps/add-ons included so they don't have to be installed individually (or maybe provide them as a pack somehow?) In general, it's a great ROM though.

Samsung roms and CM roms use different methods to write the modem, these zips won't work on CM. Just pull the modem.bin out of one of these (or any other zip) and drop it in a CM modem zip.

Try out different modems nobody can tell you which modem is best for you, JK4/JVK works pretty well for me.
You can flash JL3 on this ROM.
Flashed a new modem on Captivate running Miui, no problem and looks good. Still not sure what modem is best suited for my location, but thats my problem!
-Spoke too soon, flashed the modem but the settings did not reflect the change.
Yes that happens on CM and miui, I don't think these modems are compatible with those two os.
These are only for samsung based ROMs

Hey, im running a KB5 rom and im if there's a way to port TouchWiz 4 to it.
All the GB roms around here, ported or not, run by default with the KB5 modem. You just can't port a modem on any phone

You're using the word modem without knowjng what it means or how you're using it.
Modem: the control software for your cell data/reception.
ROM: the rest of the software that controls your phone.

Lol my bad I kind of knew I wasn't wording that quite right. I already knew your modem controls your cell reception which is the reason im using KB5 because its what works best in my area but what does JVB mean because I've tried flashing the TouchWiz 4 JVB on my phone and it started bootlooping. I was wondering if its possible to use a rom from say EF02 and flashing it over top of the framework of the newest leak. Ive noticed that people have been using kernals from eg22 and things like that, Is that only because the kernal is external from the actual file system partition? Even eg22 themes seem to work on the new leak. Im using Srf1.2 with the new modem and its great, but there are still things i really miss about gingerbread. I was snoopinng around the Acs Bombozile rom postings on the ACS forums and people were talking like they had flashed than rom over the newer frame work and not just the modem.

i doubt you could just use the framework from one rom and the rest from another without heavily edited code, if you want gingabread just flash the lastest leak, eh06 is pretty stable.
