Galaxy Tab. Buy or wait????? - Galaxy Tab General

Hi folks!
So, my question is:
Do I buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1 or do I wait a bit more so I buy a next generation Galaxy Tab with quad core and stuff (are the releasing it soon?).
Galaxy Tab 10.1 will receive ICS?
What would you recommend?
I know there is another post about this problem. But the answers were from June. I want to know now in November. What do you guys think?
Thanks!

If samsung can assure you that when you buy a 10.1 you will not get one with the "newton rings" then buy it.
For me I would not recommend samsung......sorry folks.....

What you want to buy is totally up to you, but as for updates, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 *will* receive the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, which will bring a whole heap of new benefits.
And there will always be people like bongski who may have had bad experiences, but rest assured that of the three Samsungs I've bought, I've never had a problem with one.
Also, for future reference the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does have its own forum here on XDA.

I agree. As much trouble that I have had with Samsung support is just amazing. I had the battery problem and finally had to open up my tab and disconnect the battery to fix it Samsung knows about this problem and should have had a recall. This does not bid well for Samsung.

I agree. Read all you can from the xda 10.1 forum particularly the problems encountered, then make your own decision.....

Thanks, guys!
Sorry, I didn't find the 10.1 forum....
I think I'll buy it!

plenty of newer tablets coming out... just wait a bit... personally, i WAS holding my breath for the tab 7.7, but i passed out...

Some if not most 10.1 suffer lag and you will probably need to root and load custom roms. I have my brothers tab and have not rooted it yet and I can't stand the lag. Sometimes I feel like I'm back to single core. I think for the most part its Honeycomb combined with touchwiz. I'm gonna give it back to my brother and wait for the Transformer prime with quad core. I'm sure ICS will fix most of the lag but I don't know if I can rely on Samsung to get ICS anytime soon. I also don't like that it doesnt have an sd card slot.
For now Ill be using my Samsung 7 inch tab till the prime comes.

Buy now or wait for the new technology? Well, if you always wait for the technology you'll never buy anything!

I'd wait and see if Samsung get over their Ipad cloneing phase...
Not that the 10.1 is a POS ipad but the fact that you can't put in an sd card and have more memory is a little too apple for me... That was the most compelling thing about the GTab, it had expandable memory...
I don't see the point of getting a more higher powered beefy machine that uises apps that are 2-5 times more memory dependant on installation and having NO memory to use, not to mention songs, movies and ebooks... What was Samsung thinking?

Galaxy Tab not getting ICS from Samsung

Samsung Italy has announced which devices they are planning on upgrading to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
That list is:
Galaxy S II
Galaxy Note
Galaxy Tab 10.1
Galaxy Tab 8.9
Galaxy Tab 7.7
Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus

This is absolutely ridiculous. Our tablet came out in November of last year. It's less than a year old, and Samsung is dropping us already despite being a member of Google's so-called Update Alliance.
Guess Samsung hasn't changed at all from the old days.
If this pisses you off like it pisses me off, maybe we can shame them if we complain enough on their Facebook and Twitter pages, I already did:
http://www.facebook.com/SamsungUSA#!/SamsungUSA?sk=wall
https://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobile?sk=wall
http://twitter.com/#!/SamsungMobileUS
http://twitter.com/#!/Samsungtweets
In the end, if Samsung drops us like yesterday's garbage, at least we still have our great devs here, like we always have.
I feel very lucky to have the developers!
Updated the post with the Samsung Facebook and Twitter feeds that I complained on.
With Samsung's "galaxy this and galaxy that" devices with different hardware specs you cannot expect the samsung team to come up with updates to each and everyone of them. That is a big nightmare.
As for me I will never again make a mistake in buying a samsung device. Support for an expensive device from samsung really sucks!
And to discover later that the device is not really up to quality and seems "untested" thoroughly adds to the disappointment. Example is the warming of the GT after some time of using. I have to mention that after using a rival tablet(I won't mention the brand) no similar warming happened .

I would be just happy with sammy providing a official rom for the latest gb. I am asking even ics.
So I recently started thinking a lot about the fragmentation and it is whole mess. Everyone not just google is to blame. I will hardly consider getting android again until this gets resolved some way.

After the official Gingerbread update for the GT-P1000 I am kind-of glad that Samsung are not touching the ol' 7".
I too prefer to put my faith in the development community. Look at Technomancer's CM7 port. That ROM really kicks some ass.
Opensource FTW!!!
We know that the Galaxy Tab is a powerful device as much as other devices that has been upgrade coming soon. This movement isn't good for Samsung because everybody will not trust in them. I think they have the best hardware in the market, but actually there are other companies that have work too hard, as Sony Ericsson.
shame on samsung

Used the Galaxy Tab P1000 before... changed to EVO3D (Asian edition cannot be hacked)... regret it to the max... who the hell wants to unlock the bootloaders from htcdev.com and void their warranty.. .definitely not me...
HTC, nice build quality, but really for a 1.2GHz dual core, it still kind of laggy... probably my hacked out Tab P1000 works much smoother... plus, with all the hacking and flashing and bricking my device TWICE, still manage to get warranty repairs by Samsung...
had the EVO3D for only 2 months.. just got rid of it and bought the shiny new Galaxy Tab Plus... this dual core tab really kicks some ass... and manage to root it easily...
multi tasking on the fly.. do you see the bar at the bottom, click on it and easy access to mini apps over your current running apps.... Nice...
I am never a brand fanboy, been using HTC since like forever, but the increasing "LOCKED" bootloaders philosophy by HTC is getting on my nerves... they forget, many gadget freaks are buying Android phones for their "customization and being open source"...
at time being, will stick to Samsung, and will put my faith on XDA developers to bring this device to the next level... long live XDA Developers...
Who needs samsung when you have a bunch of cool devs on XDA

Same here. Never had a Gingerbread update here in Australia (but that's my carrier's fault, I think) so jumped straight to Overcome and haven't looked back, apart from the odd dabble in CM7 and a quick run with Honeycomb.
I'm more than happy to wait for the devs to release an ICS build which will probably end up better than anything Samsung could've done anyway.

Going from first Tab to 7.0 Plus... do you think it is worth it?

I have the first Samsung Galaxy Tab P1010 with 2.2 OS and was considering getting the new Tab 7.0 Plus just to have it for 3.2 OS. Should I make the leap just for the new OS or is it not really worth it? Screen seems to be the same and size doesn't matter to me. Just wanted a few thoughts and opinons.
I wouldn't do it until ICS has been released for it and has been available for a month or so. I've already been burned once by no updates from Samsung, I won't let myself get screwed by them again. If anyone else releases a 7" or 8" ICS Tablet with decent specs anytime soon, I would look at them first before I would consider another Samsung Tablet.
A lot of ICS Tablets with lesser cost will be released soon and I strongly advice against buying Galaxy Tab plus now.

Really? I think it's the same screen.
At any rate, before you rush out and upgrade your Tab just for the sake of doing so, why not try rooting and flashing a 2.3 based ROM? The Overcome 4.0 kernel gives you a lot more battery life over stock 2.2, and then you can use that ROM or maybe others (I'm rocking the ICS-lookalike ROM).
You'll probably find that 2.3 will give your Tab a new lease on life. There are some good tablets on the market now, but there will be better ones if you can wait 6 months. Hell, the iPad 3 (*ducks*) might be compelling enough to jump over to iOS.
My tuppence would be to wait for the 7.7 ...it's imminent everywhere as I understand it. There are some people posted here with pics that already own it.
Id wait and see what the nexus tablet will be. Or wait for an official ICS tablet. Dont ever trust OEMs to give you updates and personally, Honeycomb isnt all that great or worth the upgrade. Do a CM7 with tablet tweaks and black out the buttons.

Agreed - Samsung not making ICS available for the firstgen tab 7 and SGS is an insult considering how well the CM9 port for the SGS1 functions.
ICS 4.0.3 RC1 on original SGS.

As an OG Galaxy Tab owner and the new owner of a Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, here's my two cents.
1. The screen resolution is the same, but the screen on the 7.0 plus is of better quality. The viewing angles are a bit better, the blacks are darker, and the brightness is better managed.
2. While I agree that cheaper 7in tablets are on their way, they are cheaper for a reason. The build quality, features, and attention to detail are always lacking on cheaper devices. Not only that, but even other premium device makers always struggle to match Samsung's build and screen quality in the tablet market. Samsung has also promised to provide an ICS update to the Galaxy Tab 10.1, 8.9, 7.0 Plus, and 7.7. Samsung promised a Gingerbread update to the OG Tab, and they did manage to deliver even though the carriers in the US dragged their feet on pushing the update. Since the 7.0 Plus, like the 10.1 and 8.9, is wifi, updates are quicker. My 10.1 has had 3 updates since I bought it on launch day six months ago in June.
3. The Galaxy Tab 7.7, at least in the US, is tied to Verizon. This means it is to a contract, which is a sad fate indeed. I'm willing to take a .7in smaller, non-AMOLED screen in order to be free of the carriers. If you're in Europe or the UK, then the 7.7 may be an option for you.
4. The 7.0 Plus brings much more to the table than just Honeycomb. The dual-core 1.2ghz processor and 1gb of ram make the device much faster and allow it to run apps, games, and videos much better, and with much more ease than the OG Galaxy Tab. If you loved the 7in form factor of the first tab, then the 7.0 will feel sublime, mixing the convenient 7in size with a much thinner body. It feels lighter in hand and is nicer to hold for long periods of time.
Essentially, there is a lot to love about the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, especially if you were a owner/fan of the original. There are other devices, but at least with the Galaxy Tab, you already know what kind of build quality to expect. While Samsung did upset people by not providing the OG tab with ICS, you are on XDA, and ICS is already in the works for the OG Tab. It will run, and run well, so you could just wait for that. On the other hand, it will never run as well as it will on the upgraded hardware of the 7.0 Plus.
In my opinion, the 7.0 Plus is a very good upgrade option if you're willing to spend the money. I did, and I haven't been disappointed, (and I am very picky when it comes to my devices, to the point of being anal.) As I said before, just my two cents. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks. I actually made it manually with GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program. It's the open-source alternative to photoshop.) I started it one day after cleaning out my "tech graveyard" I usually try to update it as I get new devices.
Personally I don't think, you get too much more from that step. I'll stay with my SGT P1000 for several months (and use newer firmware than that provided by Samsung)
Well, I'd like to hold off as long as possible before buying a tab. When I last looked Samsung had released any updates for the P1010. Also the only custom firmware I've seen are for everything but the wifi only model. All I really want is to get it up to 2.3 at least.
Did you have a look at the rom section in this forum? If you don't mind too much for touchwiz, I'd recommend the OVERCOME rom to you, which incorperates many fine features plus android 2.3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1317384
Ice cream sandwich is on it's way for the tab, so I don't mind the plus ;-)
It looks like those won't work with the Wifi only tab P1010.
"Overcome ROMs/Kernels will NOT work with Latin American Tabs (the P1000L/N Galaxy Tabs)/CDMA-Based Tabs (If your Tab doesn’t have a SIM card, it won’t work…sorry!)/Wi-Fi Only Tabs (P1010 models!)"
if you were going from p1000 to plus, I wouldn't recommend it, seeing as I have good hope it will get ICS from our friendly devs. For the p1010 however, there is not much hope for ICS, so anything with HC or ICS is an upgrade.
I'd personally rather go all the way to the 7.7 though.
The 7.7 is hard to put down! I think the step from the old 7" to the new 7+ isn't that great, especially if you're flashing a ROM like Overcome. The bottom line is the screen and apps are mostly the same, save a few enhancements like the IR port and faster CPU. Although, the 7+ is a fairly good deal. If you flash a 2.3 ROM you may see a new lease on the 7" and then later the 7.7s (or other brand) will be widely available at a cheaper price in the US.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), offers Ice Cream Sandwich on a seven-inch platter
It looks like Samsung has just taken the wraps off its latest tablet offerings, with the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) -- an ICS-laced follow-up to the company's original seven-incher. Available in both 3G and WiFi varieties, this redux doesn't mark a huge departure from its predecessor, packing a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 1024 x 600 LCD. The big changes, however, come in the software department, with the Galaxy Tab 2 shipping with Android 4.0 straight out of the box. Other than that, you'll find a three-megapixel rear-facing camera, a VGA shooter up front, Bluetooth capabilities, and HSPA+ connectivity. No word yet on pricing or availability, but it's worth noting that we first saw this announcement hit Samsung's RSS feed earlier this morning, and it appears to have been pulled since then. It all looks awfully official to us, but when it becomes officially official, we'll be sure to update this post accordingly. Until then, be sure to head past the break for a shot of its backside.

Really, ohhh come on Samsung why are you doing this, this is an inferior model compared to the galaxy 7.7 the only thing it has going for is ICS which the 7.7 doesn't at the moment. This is why Samsung is playing catch-up to Apple even though I deeply believe that the tabs are supperior but churning all these different models for what? Just concentrate on one single model and make it the best device available.

I don't think I can justify this as a worthy upgrade from Tab 10.1. CM9 should happily carry me for a while, at least until a Nexus tablet appears sometime this year.

Drivers are the main difference from pre-production and final release. Galaxy S2 benched poorly and seemed laggy when it debuted last year but when it was released it had the best SoC and was the smoothest Android phone.
The GN 10.1 should have similar performance to the original GN assuming it uses the same Exynos 4210.

The Note 10.1 has a 1.4GHz Exynos processor. Getting away from Teg2 is reason enough to consider it even if everything else was the same. I love the idea of being able to take real notes in meetings so I might pick one up if it's available in the next 4-6 weeks. If it's later than that I'll wait for the 11.6.

I got my S2 1 day before release in my country and it came with the KF1 firmware, TBH I never noticed any 'lag' or slowdowns.. zero difference on my end upto the KG5 firmware which was the firmware in Sept-Oct. Well YMMV, some devices just run smoother than others even if they are both of the same model, based on experience.

the ics update is "almost here"

samsung told me the update may be here by the end of the month
LOL. Just like it was gonna be released. Q1 2012 as well.

Guys check the update in the settings. I am currently receiving something. I had 3.2 before, so I think this is the ICS. =))
In addition, Market was updated to Google Play right before that.
upd: Nevermind. That was just a minor update. Sorry, I was too excited.

ICS will never be released for galaxy tab 10.1
I think that ICS will never be released for galaxy tab 10.1. The main difference between galaxy tab 10.1 and galaxy tab 2 10.1 (besides mechanics) is that it works with ICS. If the old tab will have ICS there is no reason to buy tab 2. Since they want to make profits from tab 2 they need to keep older OS on older tablet.

You got to be really clever for this, are you working for samsung's marketing department? That's a real scheme you got there!
In case you didn't get the sarcasm, samsung already announced ICS for the Tab 10.1...stop your nonesence for once...
yea its been confirmed and almost if not already complete for release so how can they not be releasing it?
^Yes....and the most suspicious thing is that there is not a single leak....curious, if I might say...

Im not in marketing deparment but im related to android development of tablet and cellular devices. And I strongly beleive that the same ICS version that runs on tab 2 should also fit older tab. So the only reason they delay it or postpone are marketing issues that im not aware of. Also the anouncement is hardly mentioned on the internet and the ICS should have been delivered along time ago.
Have you ever thought why Samsung released ginger breads for Galaxy S on all international versions, while TMobile vibrant version still runs Froyo?
Meh...
If we get a working camera driver out of it, not that big of a deal. We have several ICS options that kick ass and the only thing missing really is working cams
