I hate Zynga - Epic 4G General

I just wanted to share this with fellow Epic 4G sufferers, er, owners. Zynga's Scrabble clone, Words with Friends has a "shake to shuffle your tiles" option. Well, not an option, really. You can't disable it. For some reason, if my phone isn't lying flat on the table, my tiles shuffle constantly. They have some bug reading the g-sensor. Here's the response I got from them:
This issue may be related to the version of the Operating System that is on installed on your device being out-of-date. Operating Systems are constantly being updated to improve stability and performance, while eliminating bugs. It is highly recommended that you update your Operating System so that your version is up-to-date. By updating your OS, you can increase the likelihood that this issue you are having with the application will be resolved.

They go on to explain to me how to update my OS from the Settings menu.
Well, F#$% YOU, Zynga.

I had this issue when I first got the phone. I tried doing the calibration in Settings -> Display -> Horizontal Calibration but it wasn't enough. It wasn't until I rooted and used the command line calibration that it got fixed (and my screen rotation became much more accurate). I'll see if I can find the link to the other calibration tool.
Edit: Found it...
From a terminal or adb shell run /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha to perform a better calibration. I believe you need to have root to run this. I was amazed how much better this made my screen rotation and questioned why it wasn't calibrated correctly from the factory...

Thanks. I haven't tried that. I think I forgot to run that since I last reflashed my rom. I'll give it a try and see if it fixes the issue. Since Zynga isn't going to be any help.
Edit: No dice. Hmm, I was sure that would fix it. Darn.

Because the Epic was a last minute patch-work job, that's why. From the software (it was originally supposed to run Bada, not Android) to the GPS (they were going to use another chip or something, but Google put the kibosh on that so they had to replace it at the last minute). It was all patched up just before it was shipped out.
Our devs here don't get enough credit considering the sorry state this thing was in from the get-go.

I play the game and don't have sensor issues, what ROM are you on? I'm assuming you've already calibrated your sensor?

Yeah, I ran the calibration today. Had forgotten to do it since the last flash. I'm on rooted EC05 stock.
I'm going to play around with CM7. Maybe when I flash back I'll reinstall from scratch instead of a nandroid restore. Possible I've screwed something up.
Glad to hear that it should be working and isn't a bug in Words.
Jason

I stopped using WWF when it stopped displaying properly with AdFree enabled.

Yeah, my backups were borked, best stable thing for me was stock ec05 rooted, odexed. I just remove bloatware, etc, but I still calibrate my sensor on a flat surface even though my sensor is calibrated fine.

That is funny, I have the exact opposite problem. I find that the WWF shake to shuffle feature doesn't work very will on my Epic. I have to practically hit it against the wall to get it to shuffle. lol

I have words with friends adfree and i don't have the shuffle issue and i'm on bonsai 4.0.1
I do hate zynga developing team on android ugh..... there ipod touch one is so much better...
Also they have come a long way with words with friends, the only issue/bug i have with it is the damn notifications suck monkey balls!!!
There hanging for friends is a disaster even adfree it always reloads old games i deleted and won or lost and makes me clear its data every 3 days
It needs a lot of work!!
Zynga needs to get their sh*t together on android!!! or hire some better developers. I consider the android version of both games like a direct port somehow running on android.. feels like garbage SMH i may get rid of them

Strange accelerometer issue - Winds of Steel

Yesterday I installed a demo of the game 'Winds of Steel' on my Epic. It uses the accelerometer to control the motion of a fighter plane, but I immediately noticed that the motion sensing was way off. It jumps from extreme up to extreme down with no mid-range. Left and right movements are fine, but the up/down issue makes the game unplayable. I checked the forums and even chatted with the developer, and no one seems to have had a similar issue. I've reset the horizontal calibration, rebooted the the phone and even re-installed the game and I still get the same thing. A friend who has a stock Epic says it runs great on his phone, so I'm wondering if it has something to do with Froyo.
I'm running the Quantum ROM with the DK28 modem and EXT4 on my Epic. If anyone else has a similar problem, please let me know. Everything else runs flawlessly on this phone, so this one has me stumped.
Thanks!
I have the same problem from running dk28 (even though I'm back on 2.1 now). Have you tried rooting and then running sensorcalibutil_yamaha ?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
You may have one of the Epics like mine that had their accelerometer borked when you went to DK28. The way I corrected it was:
1. Go to settings -> display
2. Choose Horizontal Calibration
3. Turn the phone over so it is face down, and place it so the bottom edge is hanging off of a table, so you can just access the "calibrate" button.
4. Hit "calibrate" (while phone is upside down)
5. Enjoy your properly calibrated accelerometer.
Those of us that had the problem think it is possible due to the sensor data getting written incorrectly on certain phones with DK28.
I wish I could take credit for the process I laid out, but I don't remember who told me about it a month or 2 ago.
Hope this helps!
Calibrating it upside down did the trick. Thanks! I never would have thought to try that.
I'll have to mention it to the developer in the event that other people contact him.
I don't think it's an issue with the game - I think the problem lies in the DK28 update, because I know there are lots of other programs that were affected by it, not just that game.
I'm just glad the solution worked out for you.
Yeah, this issue isn't game-specific. I can't play X-Plane or use Google Sky Map (to look up) because of it.
I've tried multiple times to fix it in 2.1, to no avail. I'm considering flashing to dk28 again to fix it and then hoping the fix will remain if I then flash back to 2.1
Update: I flashed to dk28, calibrated upside down, flashed back to 2.1, and then ran sensorcalibutil_yamaha to fix the rotation issue. It fixed my issue so now the pitch is registering correctly!

[Q] long time watcher and rom user. first time poster.

Hello my name is Xan Steel. I've been trying out roms on this forum for my Epic 4G. However I've run across a lot of bugs in this rom "ACS ICS V6". I would love to be able to post them in the development thread pertaining to the rom, but since I'm under the 10 post limit to post in a dev thread. I would like to ask how I go about doing this the correct way without breaking forum rules.
Thanks in advanced
Xan Steel
Tell us what your problems are here.
1st you have to have 10 post. Go to other threads and comment on stuff like the off topic forum. Then you should be able to post on dev threads. Or you can pm them and let them know.

Well as Neckberg has said to post my issues here (Thanks) I shall.
[ROM] ACS ICS V6.
Where to began.
I came from ACS SyndicateFrozen 1.1.1 I could never get 1.2 to run. And this ROM was based on GB. Really wanted to see what GB was like. SO after installing the ROM. Everything started out normal (no issues at that point). It was sluggish which made me wonder if Carrier I.Q. was still in the ROM. It wasn't listed that it was removed.
SO I started trying things out. Everything was going good until I turned on the Wireless WiFi Tether. It crashed outright. Tried again, and crashed. It would open to a black screen and then crash. So I did some digging, and apparently this is a known issue. So I got a different one from the market that worked (Open Garden WiFi Tether).
I installed Opera. I like Opera for it's desktop mode that actually works over Dolphins. I would type in a address, and hit go, and it would act like its going, and then stop and remove what I had typed. Tried again, and it would load a blank page. Tried a third time, and got the HTML header to load the page in a text format. Uninstalled and reinstalled same thing happen. So I left it alone, and about 3 hours later it had uninstalled itself/completely missing on the phone and market stated it wasn't installed. Rebooted phone, still gone. Not idea where it went. After reinstalling it again. it would do the same thing.
So I flashed and wiped X3. And reloaded the ROM. Thinking I have a bad load.
reinstalled all my apps and even though Opera is still doing it's thing I mentioned earlier, it hasn't uninstalled itself... yet.
Now after the reload of the ROM. Last night I lost cell service (couldn't make calls) but I had data. Which was odd to me. Rebooted the phone, and same thing. Had data but not cell service. After about and hour or so, I have cell and data back together. Maybe it was someone working on the tower in the area at 11pm, or maybe the ROM decided it would be funny.
Another thing I noticed. If you hit the menu button to pull menus in apps and on the home screens. They are white on black. White text and image, on a black background. Now if you go into any sub-menu from the main menu, its black on black. You can't read anything unless your lucky to have a bright white page behind it, so that it can try to bleed through some of the transparency.
The battery icon when charging in portrait goes from normal to skinny (blinking), while in landscape mode it goes from normal to fat (blinking).
Also two music apps is not really needed. One is fine. Trimming down on unneeded apps would help save on space. Also remove Carrier I.Q. if it hasn't been yet.
Adding that super brightness, is actually bad. Not thinking about it, it's actually crashed the video HW of the phone. On a plain white screen at max brightness, it starts to artifact, and if what ever your trying to do doesn't complete. The video HW crashes, and you get a pretty rainbow on the screen until you pull the battery. Basically acts like a dying or dead video card in a PC. Also it can (and has happened to me) cause screen burn in. If you want a image of it let me know and I'll post one.
Also Rom Manager does not recognize any ClockWorkMod Recovery, if you manually install the recovery yourself.
If I find anything else buggy I'll post and update here.
Thanks
Xan Steel

Note, I haven't tried this rom myself.
No, carrierIQ is not removed on this rom, nor has it been removed on any GB rom that I know of. Still, removed or not, it won't make any difference in the performance of the device.
Any apps that you fine are useless can easily be uninstalled, even if they are installed system/app folder. Rom chefs correct attitude about roms is that they build for themselves first. I personally have 3 music players installed.
We don't have official Rom Manager support so that will be an issue on pretty much all non AOSP roms for the epic.
Your lack of service issue it probably a carrier issue and not a rom issue.

It's a good possibility since it only happened the one time, but since it is a beta, and I'm using it for the first time. I felt it needed to be brought up just in case it wasn't. Heh beta tested a lot of new software, and got into the habit of reporting everything, even if it looks like something else is the issue and not the software.
Many Thanks

[Q] Gingerbread Horizontal Calibration

So I used to run /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha as root to get a more precise horizontal calibration (the option in setting seemed to do nothing). However after upgrading to GB it seems like this executable has been removed and the option is settings still didn't seem to solve my issue. Is there another alternative on a stock GB rom? Maybe they renamed the app?
Download GPS Status from the Market. When you open the app, go to settings. There is an option to calibrate compass. Worked great from mine. Mine is spot on now.
Is there really no longer a built-in calibration app in system settings? Mine worked fine although the phone had to be upside-down like many other people's while using it.

No the built-in Settings -> Display -> Horizontal Calibration still exists. My statement was that it never really worked for me and still doesn't. The only reliable way I had to calibrate was by running the aforementioned yamaha application while running as root.
I've tried the upside down trick and I still get jitters. For instance Words with Friends randomly shakes the tiles, even if my phone is sitting on a table. It's not so bad w/ GB as it was when I got the phone originally but I was able to solve it under Froyo with the yamaha tool and don't seem to have that option in GB :-(

Yeah, I used to use /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha as well, and it worked very well for increasing the speed/sensitivity of rotation, but seems to be gone in CM7 (Which is built upon AOSP GB 2.3.5). I brought it up in another topic & one of the devs (I forget who) said that there is no known fix right now.
I'll try offtohavasu's tip, but I'm not gonna hold my breath! I've used it before with no success, but I haven't tried it with CM7 yet. Cross your fingers that this is the fix we need!
EDIT: no luck. I tried both the "Compass calibration" (which I didn't expect would do anything for rotation speed/sensitivity, but I tried anyway) and "Calibrate Pitch and Roll," and neither one had any impact.
not working for me either.
My rotation lag is terrible as well, and the upside down / display calibration option has not fixed it. I thought it was just me as this popped up on the last two GB leaks for me. I would love to be able to rotate my phone properly again.
Hate to tease but if I had a computer I could probably whip up a possible fix if I had my computer:/
Sent from my Samsung Legen-wait for it-dary! 4g
This certainly seems to be somewhat hardware related (as in, variations in production quality). I had issues back on Eclair or one of the first froyo leaks, including the bacwards compass that initially lead me to the upside-down calibration discovery, but my rotation speed has been fine since sometime around the release of EC05.
But how long of a delay do we each define as lag? When I had issues, I actually had to shake the phone to get the rotation to register... now, it still hesitates for about a second, but I see that at as a check to make sure it was an actual rotation instead of an incidental, momentary tilt of the phone - I would be annoyed if my screen rotated every time the motion sensor detected the slightest movement
Edit: a full second is an exaggeration, I'm seeing more like half a second of hesitation... Just trying to remain accurate
2nd edit - damn swypos, lol

Incoming Verizon Update

I'm on T-Mobile but I just got home and phoned up my co-worker who has the Verizon version. Says he noticed a slight improvement in overall touchscreen responsiveness. Biggest problem that he said was fixed was ghost touches (touching one portion of the screen caused a menu to pop up somewhere else for example) being completely gone. Idk, it's really starting to feel like a lot of these bugs should have gotten squashed in the product testing phase. Wonder if this is the same update as the mandatory one T-Mobile got way back. I wouldn't think so since the T-Mobile update did not fix touch screen issues for anyone.
Anybody notice the auto brightness isn't as dim anymore which is a good thing IMO.

Forgive me if I've misunderstood QC 2.0. But my understanding is it can charge at 9V or 12V. So just because it's still at 9V doesn't definitely mean that the phone isn't receiving more power, the amps could have also increased.
To provide 15W, for instance, you'd need 3A at 5V, 1.67A at 9V, and 1.33A at 12V.
It's possible to still get 9V from the charger, but draw more amps, for faster charging. Using something like Battery Monitor Widget, to monitor the current provided to the battery, would be a useful tool.

After reading all of these posts, I'm really hoping for a similar update on T-Mobile coming soon. I'm glad this isn't just a placebo and an actual solution to a software problem that doesn't require getting my phone serviced.
SIdeloading apps problem???
UPDATE: Nevermind - issue not related to Verizon update... Had Twilight app kick on after sunset and that overlay app (reducing blue light) is what caused the touch issue. (Credit: brainwash1)
Enabled installing from "Unknown Sources" and installed an app yesterday no problem
I just did the Verizon system update and reboot, now on sideloading install I get the permissions list with CANCEL & INSTALL buttons at the bottom. Looks normal, but the INSTALL button doesn't respond to any tapping. Tried landscape mode also, just to move where the button was located on the screen, but no dice. CANCEL button works fine.
[Also, if there are many permissions, so I need to scroll, the INSTALL button starts as a NEXT button, then changes to INSTALL when done scrolling to bottom. Doesn't matter, neither NEXT not INSTALL buttons function]
Not sure what else would cause this. It seems like the Verizon system update broke something. Anyone else having new problem sideloading after the update???
Whats your carrier? I think the other guy is verizon. So am i, and i put no thanks

OK, then the update isn't stored in the cache partition as other phones. It's a bit drastic but a factory data reset will do it. I ended up taking the update and then froze the updater. It did improve the touch response so I have no need for further updates. It updates the kernel because that is where the necessary changes are.

my touch response "seems" improved but I still get ghost touches..
I love pretty much every aspect of the phone, but the issues I have with the touchscreen are maddening at times, if I didn't see widespread reports of issues I would have Verizon replace the phone, but I am not sure it's worth the hassle..

It might be worth replacing. I first had a black one that had the problem pretty bad. I returned the phone and went back to my S6 for a while but ended up picking up a blue one from Best Buy and this one works great. The touch wasn't that sensitive before the update but now it works really good. My battery is really good on the blue model too. Keep in mind I paid full retail for mine so when I returned the first one there was no restocking fee. I go to BestBuy just for that reason.
I was having some touch issues just as many are experiencing. Just today I installed the Google keyboard from the play store. I enabled the new keyboard and stopped using the LG keyboard. I have been using it this way for about an hour and I am much happier. I am hopeful this will take care of my issue. This is on a Verizon G4.
I took the update yesterday and threw my Verizon G4 on a Qi Wireless Charger last night and the bug where it has crashed in the AM is still there. Not sure about that.
Basically every time I wake up on a night of Qi Charging, the phone is crashed and freaks out.
Update:
My phone is now getting hot and doing the screen brightness bounce like it did out of the box. Going from 100 to 90 to 80 to 90 to 80 to 100 to 90.

I switched from the LG keyboard to the google keyboard day one so that was never a source of my issues.. Just today.. twice post update I have had ghost touches launch the app switcher icon while texting and caused me to switch apps on accident.. Doh.. It's frustrating to say the least.
Never had a problem with wireless charging besides it's slow.
No screen brightness fluctuations.
No ghosting on screen.
Sounds like there's an awful big batch of bad phones.

There are definitely bad ones. I returned mine again a few hours ago because my outdoor pictures would come out either dark or overexposed real bad. I tried manual mode and auto and no matter what I did they were awful. So I'm back to my S6 again, it was fun while it lasted.

Display driver issue? fixes?

My phone seems to have developed a display driver issue where part of the screen ghosts images, turns 50 shades of gray, etc. Apparently this is a common problem at one time one if one searches "fix moto x pure display driver" on google but cant find a fix for it.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Did motorola address this issue with a fix? Perhaps reflash the driver? Ive already tried wiping the phone and flashing to Nougat ([7.1.2] AICP for clark). Neither made a difference. It shows in twrp as well btw.
running out of ideas here. Hate to have to retire the old girl.
any ideas on a replacement for verizon networks...i need an sd card slot for additional storage and of course the phone needs to be rootable. Maybe a moto G?
What makes you think this is a driver issue? If you do a screen shot when this is occuring does it look normal or messed up? If it is a software issue, the screen shot will look messed up, if it looks normal then the hardware is at fault. That would give you about a 80% accurate answer.
There are no "known issues" with the display drivers in the Moto X S/P, so if it's software, best would be to reflash stock via fastboot and retest. If the issue recurs it is likely hardware.

I thought it might be a driver issue by searching for "moto x pure display driver". My phone looks exactly like the one pictured in the first link in the search. Android authority is a pretty decent site and after reading through the comments section it does seem common enough.
Im going to try to reflash via fastboot as you suggested but im afraid i think youre right as it doesnt show on a screenshot. Its worth a try i suppose. Just dont have the $ for a phone right now.
thanks for the reply btw.

I haven't heard of any display issues in this regard since the X's initial release, and that was fixed pretty quickly with an OTA. None sense then... The "display driver" is built into the kernel, and if this was an issue I'm sure we would have heard more about it.
Sorry to hear, but this sure sounds like a hardware problem.
Okay so my issue was similar just that instead of the bottom half, it was happening for the full screen and it seems to have fixed itself after having the screen on full brightness overnight. It was a mistake actually. It all started when I was replacing my old battery cus it got so weak. I had no heat gun or anything or that sort around so I figured I could heat the phone up internally. Started running clash royale as it got the phone hotter whenever I played and changed the sleep period to 30 minutes because those are the things that make my phone heat up. So I did that. Replaced the battery yada yada, it works perfectly now. So I forgot to set the sleep period back and went to bed with the screen on. Somehow it just continued to stay on all the way till morning (or I believe so). Woke up to the phone hot, screen brightness on full. It was under my pillow too so the heat just kept building up. Needles to say, when I realised I closed the apps running, turned the brightness all the way down and locked the screen. I put it aside to cool off because I had just gotten up, wasn't in the mood. But seeing as I can't keep my hands always from my phone I picked it up like 3 minutes later. I'm writing this an hour after and the brightness is on the lowest setting. No ghosting, no lines being drawn up anywhere, no lagging, nothing. It's currently working like brand new. I should mention that the phone was plugged in the whole time. And mobile network was on. WiFi was off.
I'll keep monitoring the issue and I'll post and changes if any. Hopefully there won't be any.

Later on the same day: So I fell asleep for about 4 hours with brightness on low. (damn I sleep a lot) woke up and the issue returned. But I had the brightness on full for a while and it seems to have resolved again when I put it back to low brightness.
That's all so far. Still monitoring
I'm glad someone else noticed that when you slide the brightness bar it effects the way this display issue behaves. I was starting to think I was alone on this. Now this is just my experience on my phone of course. It seems to be around 2/3 way to full bright that it starts to flash the white lines on and off and then 3/4 + it is pretty much acts as it should, they go away! So I took a screenshot as acejavelin suggested and the screenshot was clear. So this would explain why updates don't seem to change anything since it does seem to be a certain batch with bad hardware. Can this hardware be solder changed? Guess I will keep an eye out for sale of xpure with busted digitizer/good lcd to test and possible mb swap.
Yes 1575 definitely has a display driver issue, i've noticed this too. I don't think there is a way to fix this, unless it would be fixed in Nougat.
But how sure are you that it's a driver issue and not hardware? That's why I'm waiting for nougat. If it doesn't fix the issue then I'm just going to have to retire the phone.
Sorry bro
If you're encountering a display problem in aftermarket roms and even on the bootloader and recovery menus, then it's most definitely not a "display driver" issue. As @acejavelin already pointed out, it's not a known software problem unless you're running the shipped Lollipop software release.
Mine has the same issues now and then but a restart fixes it always.

that's the point, problems are only in the stock rom. I've tried many custom roms and none of them have this issue, but unfortunately they have many other issues so i have to use the stock version.
But the Op!

I've already tried wiping the phone and flashing to Nougat ([7.1.2] AICP for clark). Neither made a difference. It shows in twrp as well btw.

Oh. I just read this and assumed that we were all talking about the same thing. In your case, I'd perform some experimentation to make absolute certain that your findings aren't just coincidence.
Question re: hardware vs software
acejavelin said:
What makes you think this is a driver issue? If you do a screen shot when this is occuring does it look normal or messed up? If it is a software issue, the screen shot will look messed up, if it looks normal then the hardware is at fault. That would give you about a 80% accurate answer.
There are no "known issues" with the display drivers in the Moto X S/P, so if it's software, best would be to reflash stock via fastboot and retest. If the issue recurs it is likely hardware.

Hi ~ just read your msg, and tried your "screenshot test." The grayish area on my screen (which over time, comes & goes - haven't detected a pattern as to why/when) DOES show up on the screenshot.
If I understand correctly, that would tend to indicate that I am experiencing a software issue? (Not hardware)
I did do a Factory Data Reset, and am experiencing the same issue. I had not added any apps for an extended period of time, prior to this gray-area occuring. I did, however, drop the phone. I don't recall for certain, but I don't think the problem occurred immediately, rather, it started very shortly thereafter (1 -3 days).
And I am waiting for delivery of a battery, since that's shot (runs down very quickly, & shuts down with anywhere from 30% - 60%+ battery level).
Any suggestions for resolving this? I hope this post makes sense... And thank you for any ideas or assistance you can offer!
Hello everybody. I have the same problem.
And who ever changed the display? Do you want to understand this is the problem of the display, motherboard or drivers?
I think it's a software problem, a hardware will not stop glitches when you flash a different software until and unless you fix it. In my experience, after my phone break because of downgrade to marshmallow stock firmware, and with an unlock bootloader i update my phone using OTA update, suddenly it stop working. blank screen and i tried try to recovery it with xt1575 IMG file to boot it again, mine it was xt1572(India) then I start facing a lot of problem, glitches, can go back to marshmallow stock firmware so and so... Now I'm trying to find a solution !!!! Custom ROM, CM13 work better and no glitches till now... I will Report soon
Moto x style/pure display problem

I think maybe due to brightness control problem, could be the software or hardware problem
