Droid X2 2.3.4 unrooted (for the moment). Can I remove adds? Addfree is for rooted only, and I cant make my HOST FILE r/w because of noot root access. But there MUST be a way to get rid of all that junk...
Thanks in advance folks!
Incorrect.
I suppose you could root...apply adfree...unroot.
Only problem being that you couldn't update the host file again.
Also, why not root?
It's as easy as one-click to undo it...
And once you realize the MINIMAL potential that simply rooting gets you...maybe you'll wanna' break into custom roms!
They really make your phone YOUR phone.
And you can always go back to stock again from there as well...which will take about an hour. Seriously.

Please note that anything Droid X2 related should be posted in the correct forums. The Droid X2 has it's own subforums.
To answer your question though, there really isn't a way to block ads without rooting. Just not possible. Why not root your device and install a custom rom? It may seem over your head right now, but I guaruntee you'll love how speedy your phone will be. We have plenty of guides and tutorials over at our section, that will assist newbs like you in getting started.

So I am pretty new to Android and am looking to root my Droid X.
Just a few quick questions:
1. If I root now will I not be able to get 2.2 when that comes out later? Will I just have to unroot? Would it be bad for me to get rid of the bloatware (eg the .604 update required that certain apps be present)?
2. I know that the Droid 1 is going to get 2.2 with root by updating to a different ROM than the one that is OTA. What about Droid X users? Would we just have to stay at 2.1 (with root) until someone figures out how to root the 2.2 OTA update?
2. If my phone begins having problems can I unroot in a way that Verizon can never tell that I had root in the first place? Would this only be possible if the phone is working "well enough" to go through the unroot process?
3. Any real reasons that you guys would know of NOT to root? I am mostly concerned with improving battery life and just getting the few cool apps that are made possible via root.
I'm rooted and I'm about to send my device back to Verizon when they send me the new one. All you have to do is unroot and then restore the phone. Acoustic to factory defaults.

hmmm, I think I'm being fooled with the number of questions there somehow. Can't figure out how though...
But anyway:
1. Yes, if you root now and 2.2 comes out, you can just unroot and upgrade. But you'll lose root most likely. I personally wouldn't remove bloatware at this point, just freeze with Titanium Backup, because you'll need those apps to upgrade. You can just unfreeze, make sure permissions are set right and install 2.2 when it rolls out.
2. Yes, at this point it's either stay rooted with 2.1 or upgrade to 2.2 and lose root. No custom ROMS yet.
2 (again). Yes, you can unroot if the phone is working. Just make sure all the bloat is in place, and Verizon won't know. As for the second question, if you brick your phone, you won't be able to do anything until we have access to custom ROMs. Basically you need to know what you're doing. If you're not sure how it'll affect the phone, better not touch it.
3. I'd say rooting greatly improves experience with this phone. You'll be able to install apps that manage your memory, help you save battery, and just do cool customizations =) Just as I said, make sure you know it's safe w/e you're doing.
I noticed there is a lot more development going on with the EVO(which I currently have) than with the Droid X... Is it difficult to develop for motorola, are there not enough developers working on this phone?
I ask because I currently have an EVO and I love that I can customize everything from the boot screen to what the volume buttons do... but the internet is slow on this thing and I can't take advantage of 4G most of time.
I'm planning on getting a Droid X but I just don't see anything as far as custom hacks and things... Any 2 cents welcomed
So i recently rooted my MT4G and all and that really killed my brain haha. And i wasnt sure if i wanted to keep it rooted. So i read one of the post how to unroot. I was quite confused. Its pretty much like the same process as to root it. Now i watch a video on youtube where a guy used a program to root it and unroot it was With a special program or something and i was curious to know if anyone was working on something like that or knows of something like that in the future.
Even though its a different HTC phone. I was just wondering if some day it will be that easy to root and unroot.
I cant post a link yet because this is my first post. but go to youtube.com> seach How to unroot your mytouch 4g. And one came up as How to Root and Unroot your Samsung vibrant. 2.24
There are guides on how to root and unroot in the android development section. I can't imagine why you would want to unroot? it doesn't hurt anything and even if you never install a custom rom it is still good to have to backup your current rom and apps with ROM Manager and titanium.
Although the process is not a one click solution it is almost. temp root with visionary r14. Copy one file and run it from the terminal app on the phone then use visionary r14 to permroot with one click
Please post questions in Q&A Section.
Well it did hurt the wifi. Cause i keep getting Error. And when i looked at the solution patch to fix it. i went what the ****?!?!?! im more of the visual learner. If there are videos on how to root/unroot or whatever it would make my life alot easier.
To unroot its the same process as to rooting just put the unroot folder in?

see....this is a very common asked question,
if you root your phone by propc method Link, it will give you a gingerbread theme.
but if you root your phone directly, then you will have same appearance, only there will be a Super User Permission app.
and you asked about gingerbread ROM, you wont get it now.
bcoz there is no custom ROM for it. developers are working hard to get it. so you need to wait for some time.
rooting is absolutely safe if you follow each step carefully.
i will recommend you to use this guide. Link
hope you succeed!
So, I'd like to upgrade my HTC Wildfires firmware to the latest one (not sure whether its 2.2 or 2.3 atm) and I'd like to do it via PC, connected with USB cable... How do I do it, what should I download, etc... I'm a complete newbie when it comes to stuff like this so any kind of guidance would be highly appreciated.
connect to wifi and ask yourself if you are sure you do not want to root or flash a custom rom. if the anser is no go to menu > settings > about phone > software updates > check now then follow the on screen prompts
IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT
WHEN THE UPDATE IS INSTALLING DONT DO ANYTHING STUPID (E.G. REMOVE THE BATTERY. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DEVICE
As the previous post said: IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT YOUR PHONE.
Unless you know why you want to 'upgrade' via this route I would highly recommend not doing it.
There are already Froyo (2.2) and Gingerbread (2.3) ROMs available in the forums immediately that can only be installed on a rooted device. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS IF YOU UPGRADE THE WAY YOU ARE SUGGESTING, IE. THERE IS NO GOING BACK IF YOU UPGRADE THE WAY YOU ARE SUGGESTING. YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO ROOT YOUR PHONE.
Apologies for the shouting but you really should understand what you will be missing out on if you can't root your phone.

Just read this thread, completely:

Must've been blind not to notice that thread... Anyway, already got CM7 on my Wildfire, thanks !
Ok y'all I'm just going to come out and preface this by saying that I'm a noob when it comes to rooting phones and don't quite understand it. What is rooting exactly? What are the benefits to rooting? Does it void the phone's warranty? And what is the best method for rooting the Droid RAZR M running 4.1.1 Jelly Bean? Is there any way to "un-root" a phone once it's rooted?
Gunner out!
There was is an old website. Ummmm what's it called ummm how you say ummmmmm ..... oh yeah Google.
Rooting makes the phone more fun to play with. Yes it voids the warranty. Yes you can unroot.
Hit up Google. They supposed to be some sort of informational website or something.
And don't take my sarcasm wrong dude. Im just messing with ya. If you decide to root this thing and you need help ima hook you up. I knew squat about android when I found this place and I was led by the hand for a bit. I don't mind giving back!

I'm all ears
I have always used root, as a preface to installing custom recovery and a custom rom. I don't know how new you are so please don't be offended when I say custom recovery and roms give you more options and more freedom to make your phone yours. I also root to remove system apps that aren't used commonly called bloatware that come preinstalled on your device and without root you can not uninstall these. There are apps on the market that require root to gain use or full use like setCPU, root explorer and titanium backup there are others as well. I hope this little bit of information helps you make your decision!
Here's a link to the guide on how to root your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1940630
Its really easy. Just download the moto droid razr drivers and install them on your PC. Follow the directions on the screen. Just a couple button presses and presto. The program will let you know that it has successfully gained root. Use root checker from Google play to verify proper root. Should you run into root access issues. Here is a zip that will fix that.
Delete the original su file and superuser apk from the motofail2go folder and replace them with the files located in the root zip and paste them in the motofail2go folder. Rerun the program and it should work then. Good luck.
