Should i await the htc inspire(desire HD) since there will be roms for that, buy a streak and wait around a little longer or someone locally is selling a white streak but it has a tiny crack in it. I cant decide, is that even fixable?
Do what I did, do some research on both phones. Read a couple of FAQs on both devices and then decide if thats what you want. Or you have option #2 buy the streak, test drive it, if you don't like it then just simply return it.
Sent from the phone killer of ALL phone's, Dell Streak!
Well seeing as how the inspire comes out next week its a toss up. I love my streak especially since loading streakdroid. I would say go play with the streak at best buy to see how you like the screen size. Its really what would be the difference.
Dell Streak powered by Streakdroid 1.7
I say go with the Streak because of screen size. I've been running HSPA+ on my Streak before ATTs 4G launch. Basically same features if not the same phone minus the 8mpxl camera, but the Streak will always dominate in screen size and is by far the king of phones in the ATT lineup.

I think I would wait a while. wait til some release dates come out for upcoming phones.
i'm in love with my Streak. Whipping out the 5" monster in a crowded room is sure to draw attention.
However, if you like customizing and custom ROMs, there is only one developer, DJ_Steve. He's awesome, and his newest ROM 1.7.0 so far seems as good as stock, while being faster without the pre-loaded bloatware. But there is only one of him. HTC has a much bigger community, much more developers, and more of a conventional layout.
With the HTC you are going with the grain, with the Streak you are going against it.
If I had to make the choice today, I would chose the Streak over the Inspire. The technology is similar, yet the Streak has the bigger, easier to read screen and the "WOW" factor that other phones don't.
Now, if the choice included the dual core Atrix ... that's a much tougher choice.

Good choice!
Step 1: Buy Streak
Step 2: QDL Tool
Step 3: StreakMod clockwork recovery
Step 4: Honeycomb! (Well, OK, for now DJ_Steve's 1.7.0, but hopefully soon...)
Recently got Galaxy s2 and I was getting bored with dell streak
I am still debating which phone to keep
Here are my impressions.
Main thing I find different
First the most imp thing - There is nothing out there in the market at this time that can compete with our 5inch screen
Screen : Miss 5" Dellscreen ( SGS2 has 4.27inch screen ) . Miss the fun of reading emails, browsing pages and articles . This has been the biggest dissappointment for me so far. However Quality of the screen is better in GS2 with more vivid colors
If u r into documents and editing streak will kick SGS2 in the ass.
Speed : To tell the truth , I have not seen much difference . My dell streak running 354 stock had no issues with speed. I will say SGS2 is slightly faster but i dont think it makes any difference. Aint there a limit to speed ?
Battery : I think its the same. May be SGS2 consumes more ( There are reports of many people having high battery drain)
Warranty : Had so much peace of mind with streak as I had US warranty.
SGS2 in US has European warranty. Will have to see how things will work, if i need it.
What makes SGS2 better
Feel in the hand : This SGS2 wins handdown. Very light weight and thin. Very easy for one hand operation. However, the build is not great. Plasticy feeling. I dont feel as if i am using a high end device. I feels like a toy
Camera : any day better. I thing i hated in streak , is its camera
Video chat with gtalk is now possible. ( very useful for me )
Internal storage is 16 gb . Now i have a total of 48gb to play with ( however 32gb card on dellstreak was plenty enough.
Support : Now i feel what the android development community is like. Dell streak only has steve and his teams support. They are probably the best , however l am loving the contribution from many developers.
The best thing is samsung has given 5 handsets to all the cyanogen developers for development for free... I wish dell did the same thing to our developers.
CWM support is default . Meaning flashing from recovery is a breeze. U can run cwm app and all is done.
Ports : micro usb is standard.
Here is the best thing OTG support for external usb is default.
Loving the fact that i can connect any usb drive, keyboard or mouse to my phone. Wont be doing this every day but love the idea.
Accessories : Are now sparse but hopefully will get better.
There are some apps in samsung like reading hub that I think is useful. Touch wiz is no go for me.
Finally
- There have been many reports about battery drain, yellow tinge on the screen, pink spot in camera , etc > However i was lucky not to see any of it so far.
- I also believe that any 5" screen phone will never get the same user base and hence developer support as some of the other smaller form facor phones.
To conclude :Inspite of the positives of SGS2 i listed, I still believe that dell streak annouced more than an year ago is a beast device. I am still debating , but looks like I will keep my new expensive toy.
If u have questions thrown them at me.
"The best thing is samsung has given 5 handsets to all the cyanogen developers for development for free."
Wow! I will write to Dell if they can do the same. Never know until you will ask
The streak is a discontinued item. Dell won't do anything for an old device when they barely cared for it when it was new.

I have had the Streak since the day it was released last year. The screen size is fantastic and I am generally very happy with it. But now I have had enough of a phone that's too big for my pocket and bought the SGS2. I miss the big screen and the nice screen density of the streak but I will learn to live without them. I also have a galaxy tab 7 which I use when i want a big screen experience.
The story so far....

Milestone
Streak
Galaxy Tab 7
Galaxy S2
to be continued ;-)

The streak had been discontinued by att in april/may. I haven't seen one in the 6 best buys in the area in the last 6 months. So other than dell(leftover stock), what retailer sells the device? I only see no name places on amazon mobile. The advertising/support for the streak 5 was crap when it was sold by att so why would dell all of a sudden commit harder to the phone when it's life is basically over?
It's a great phone but dell screwed up from the start by not getting the device proper exposure.

In my Illinois Best Buy near St Louis, they still had black Streaks in stock in mid May. They still had the operational model on display. The model wasn't out last week, but I didn't ask if they still had any in stock.
I paid 2400rmb for my streak, that is 2200rmb lower then galaxy s2 right now.So may be I should just sell my kidney for a little bit improvement?

The Streak is more comparable to the Samsung Infuse's 4.5 inch screen. I've moved to the Infuse because of the better screen, better camera, and better speakers. The Infuse stock ROM is faster than Dell's stock. The Infuse also easily last me a whole day with moderate usage.
I don't recommend the streak anymore, specially after all the comments related to broken screens, the screen is also sensitive to humidity,static...no way.I would go with the Galaxy S2 but I think I am gonna go with the Infuse.I know the Galaxy is better but I got kind tired of buying the latest toy....there's always "the latest toy" plus if I buy the infuse I save $200.
with 5" screen, Streak's stil the best except you want other kind of tablet replacement with bigger dimension as GTab or ipad, etc
I prefer galaxy s2 than dell streak.
I'm probably going with the s2 this fall/early winter...the streak (for me) will be year old in November. Being single, with no bills, it's nice to be able to have the latest once a year or so
I can live with .5" smaller screen, at the same resolution, dual core, 2.3/.4, and (hopefully) a larger mod community.
Dell & at&t dropped the ball on this one. If the Streak2 came out with an AMOLED screen, I'd give it a look, but it sounds like it will have the same style LCD screen as the current streak.
Friend of mine as the galaxy and the BRIGHTNESS of the screen is just unbelievable, so with the "super" AMOLED screen for the S2, it should be even better.
It will be hard though, to get use to people NOT saying "that is your PHONE" when I pull the streak out of the belt pouch I carry it in
A piece of friendly advice:don't expect too much for amoled, the colour is unnatural, the power saving is not worth mention, and the worst part is,reading text on amoled/super amoled is a pain in the ass.
That's why galaxy s2 uses super amoled plus.Still,I would prefer slcd rather than amoled family.

I still love my Streak, and am going to stick with it. Because of the tracking issues with the iPhone, my wife wants to get rid of her 3GS. We will replace it with the S2. The release date for the U.S. is supposedly Jul 2011.
I just go my S2 today.
So far I love it. There may be a Streak for sale soon.
I do miss the 5" screen, but the S2 has a 4.3 and it is sooooo much more portable than the Streak.
I do love my Streak though.
If I sell, I am sure I will take a look at the Opus.
Later
The Best Buy near me had none on display, and was also out of stock. I checked BB on line as well, and no Streaks were available there either. I may try to pick-up another to have on the side, as I don't want to go to a smaller screen size when this one dies. I have no problem putting the Streak in any pants pocket front or rear, I have sat down with it in my back pocket and have had no issues with screen fragility. Basically, I love this device and I'm disappointed that it won't be readily available much longer...
Apparently I am not allowed to post outside links, so you'll have to copy-paste this
Code:

Preface this with Dell's web address.
Could this be the end of the Streak? Here's why I say it is:
Nearly all phones from Q2/Q3 2010 have been phased out. HTC Aria, HTC Desire, Droid Incredible, T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, Motorola Droid X, and the Samsung Galaxy S series.
The only phones that remain from this era were the Dell Streak, which appears to have vanished from Dell's inventory, and the HTC Evo 4G, which is swiftly being replaced by other HTC offerings by Sprint.
---
The Streak has enjoyed a run of a little more than a year, which is better than what a lot of phones can say. It had tip-top specs when it came out, and still runs beautifully in the face of new dual-core processors and new versions of Android.
My only hope is the modding scene stays alive for another year as Android moves into Ice Cream Sandwich and Dell shifts their mobile platform focus towards Windows Phone 7 (which seems to be the case, since they have more WP7 phones than Android phones now).
A big thanks for DJ_Steve and the entire modding community; without them, Dell probably wouldn't have even bothered updating to 2.2. And even then, thanks for doing a better job than Dell's offering. My hope is enough of us will stick around while locked onto two-year contracts and keep working to keep the phone relevant.
That is typical of most "SmartPhones" They always have to make a newer, better, faster model to keep the phone carriers happy by drawing customers.
Back in the olden days of non-converged devices the lifespan of a PDA, like the much respect Dell x50v and x51v, lasted for years in the market... Now you are lucky for 1 solid year and a device that would outlast the contract (like a car loan)
Eventually Dell will start marketing the Opus or whatever designation the Streak 2 will have.
(if only they would add a microUSB port for charging... instead of or in addition to the useless PDMI port)
Engadget says that they spoke to a Dell Rep and he/she told them that Dell was doing an update on the Streak 5 and that is why it was pulled.

If that's the case, more than likely means that we'll get an official Gingerbread build, don't you think?
If so, that makes me very happy.
If not, I'm still happy with my streak. It does what I need it to do reliably.

She is supposed to call me back. I am going to ask if I can just wait for them to ship a new unit instead of sending me another refurb.

For Delll to pull the Streak from inventory, I wonder what the update is? I "just" bought another Streak the last week in June, wish I knew of an update before then...
Is it something that gets sent out to others or is it a physical device update?
The Endgadget article mentions that the update has nothing to do with Android, so it's hardware related. I already speculated that Dell was going with non-removable internal storage to replace the MicroSD.
Dell called back and the rep said they are sending me a new Streak. We will see what's what when it arrives.
I have a feeling it has something to do with the screen being super dodgy when it gets hot or has been in your pocket for a while. In another thread someone posted a link to a site where the military is looking into the streak. The last thing a soldier trapped in some sand dune in Afghanistan needs is a phone that wont unlock.

As I said in another thread, put the Streak in your pockets with the screen facing outwards. That will take care of the unlocking problem. We have 95 degrees and close to 100% humidity, and it always works now.

I too have found work arounds. The point is you shouldn't have to have works arounds. I think that the "update" is quality control, and fixing the screen issue could be the reason. Another pro tip. Sometimes grazing the phone along your arm discharges the static built up in the screen and will allow you to then unlock it.

In the case of our unit, don't you actually have to market the damn thing if you want Android to meet your expectations?
Dell has yet to market ANY of it's mobile devices,
strangely though the venue pro is doing a lot better then the venue, even though the venue pro had a really hard start in life.
It might be the largest userbase behind the s5, though granted the wp7 market has a lot less devices overall so it's not as diffucult to not be flooded by millions of devices unlike on android
I gave up waiting for 2.2, I gave up completely for 2.3, I gave up on the update to the streak, I'm GIVING UP on Dell. Samsung note will be my next device when it hits the states.
I think Dell was trying to sell its mobile phones using the same sales model they used when selling PCs. They didn't take into account the many, many more variables that affect mobile phone purchases (carrier first, then platform, then leading edge hardware). They, I think, wrongly assumed, "People are buying alot of Android phones, and since we're Dell, if we make them, people will buy them". Let Dell go back to Microsoft.... I mean they've been in bed together for decades..... Mr. Dell just is reluctant to admit fault.... "We're Dell..... no one is buying our phones so it MUST be Android's fault" LOL

It would help if they actually followed the development cycle and released the updates, where is 2.3.3, 2.3.4 and so on?
A device stuck with a older version of the OS is always going to be less popular.

Yeah, thats exactly it
There is this saying don't hate the player, hate the game. I think. But in this case , its the other way around Yeah, people that cant admit there made a mistake, not updating the software, or at least doing some market hype.
It seems like Dell isn't very appealing because of the style, and its openness to software. Plus , back then Android wasn't that popular that you can could sell a heavy 5" phone, But now days with the right specs, you just watch ...
In short, they are too lazy, There going for the surely win route, I think. Thats why they are going for the Win8 tablet.
Dell must have new PR manager
if dell stepped up the hardware, maybe some IPS, super AMOLED+, 8+MP cam anyone? make Streak 7 a bit thinner.. release with stock Android and get updates out on time, and maybe unlock bootloaders, etc. oh yeah and advertise!! They could be moving units.. Streak 7 likely last piece of anything Dell I own for a good long time..
One thing I will say, however, is my cousin has the Dell WindowsPhone "Venue Pro".... and that phone is truly a THING OF BEAUTY (no kiddin). I've read on more than one reputable site that it may in fact be "the best WindowsPhone available" (believe it or not). Not only is it extremely well-made, but it feels like you could drive nails with it and not hurt it. Such a shame it's running that G-damned lame-as-**** Windows OS.

Personally I will never buy another windows phone. Was very glad of the android transition to revert, even if windows "finally" did something about their quirky, sticky, freezing between processing and my alltime fav "random non-response touchscreen moments".
But Dell F'd up once with bad promo and had monkies doing their PR. Dell f'd a secomd time making the announcement about. "Dell has pulled the streak from its current inventory ...stay tuned for a special announcement.." Leaving us to believe our trusty ole Streaks were called in for some "innerds overhaul" only to hear that its been pulled from the U.S. market.
Dell f'd a third time releasing a DELL STREAK PRO, much smaller screen and device, looks like a cookie-cut replicate of most other phones, lost all its streak5 features.
I am looking for info on how to get my hands on the ViewSonic tab/phone.
Time to put ole Dell out to third-world pastures
Personally my opinion is not one to count on Dell's conscious but here it goes, first of all they didn't even make the product they just slapped their name on it and try to get as many sales as they could two once their product crashed on 2.2 faster than an angry bird into a wall they knew if they didn't pull it they would get a bad name and three dell doesn't care about their customer cause if they did they would admit to making a bad product and see how they can go ahead and fix their problem extend warranties on bad units, fix 2.2 issues an apology for stealing your money oh wait it's not stealing it's business. Okay well from now on Samsung has my business and I will steal from Dell by letting one know everytime they see my Streak "what the hack is that thing" saying the worst investment you can ever make"
@Chamo4u2: Dell's conscience and the fact they only put their name on the Streak aside, I'd like to find out where you get this impression they pulled the Streak because of crashes. Now I've owned a Streak since April. It came with 2.2.2 347 preinstalled. In that time frame I've upgraded the ROM to 351 and 360, after having to reinstall 347 twice due to mistakes I made in tweaking the ROM for my tastes. At no time have I encountered force close issues, thus I don't believe their ROMs are the problem. Since my experience flatly contradicts yours, what is different about your Streak compared to mine?
The Streak was discontinued in the original countries where it was released. Dell has released the Streak in Asian countries this year, meaning for those countries the Streak is new. If the Streak were pulled because of software problems, Dell would not have released it in Asia. Thus your statement that the Streak was pulled due to crashes is demonstrably false.
The Streak is actually a decent device that was saddled with poor marketing decisions made by Dell. Of course this assumes that the Streak was actually marketed, when we know it wasn't. Had Dell put any effort into promoting the Streak in television commercials, had put Streaks in AT&T stores, and had actually sold the device with 2.1 from the start instead of 1.6 we likely would not be having this discussion.
Despite the lack of marketing and despite Michael Dell's comments, apparently Dell does still care about the consumers. As most people reading this forum know, Dell released the sources to a Gingerbread kernel. According to DJ Steve those sources have been in his possession for over a week now. With Dell releasing the kernel, can official Gingerbread ROMs be far behind?
P.S. You've got to work a bit on the punctuation buddy. I almost ignored your post because I had so much difficulty reading it.

I'm with Strephon...... I've had my factory-installed Froyo Streak since last April and it's been one of the most stable Android phones I've ever owned (seriously).... And I've owned EVERY T-Mobile Android phone available (MyTouch Slide, MyTouch 4G, Nexus, G2, LG G2x). I blame the US Streak's downfall on non-existent marketing and offering it carrier-subsidized only on aTnT. Up until they lost iCrap exclusivity, they would actually try and talk new customers out of buying anything Android (I witnessed this myself).....

I experienced that firsthand, and got so pissed I left the store. If there is one thing I cannot stand it's being lied to, and the AT&T "salesperson" did exactly that in trying to dissuade me from going with Android.
Pledging support for Microsoft and Windows 8,
That's the key phrase there, it means they've done a deal with M$ and knocking Android is a way of passing the buck for their past failure on to Google.

Apparently, our Streak is the first Android device to be officially supported for accessing secure government data. Too little, too late?
It would be nice to think that taking that into consideration that DELL would maybe continue development on the Streak...
Or maybe even go as far as to actually continue work on that dual core Opus One that we all have yearned for.

Comparison of the two:
Galaxy Note xxxxxx Dell Streak
5.78 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 6.02
3.27 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 3.11
0.38 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 0.40
Metric:
146.85 xxxxxxxxxxx 153
82.95 xxxxxxxxxxxx 79
9.65 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 10
Other than the Galaxy Note being 0.16" or 3.95mm wider it is smaller overall, but packs a bigger screen.

Kinda Expected
I can say this.. Dell has a play in the DoD for sure... Trust me..
With regards to the OP:
Engadget demoed the venue having the same software loaded a couple weeks back, as the S5 and venue are really similar it's prob the same software set.
I guess it makes sense that they want to look for a US based company for this since it simpilifies policy vs using a foreign company's products (assuming they use it at all)
There arnt many US based device manus afterall, moto and dell are pretty much the only game in town. The Streak isnt particularly secure though, it's bootloader is unencrypted/not-locked.
Though still this doesnt make that much sense: the S5/7/venue are manufactured and maintained by qisda, which is a taiwanese company. I cant say for sure which does what exactly software wise but qisda does most of the rom, but I doubt that dell does it by themselves 100% stateside.
I dont know how moto does it but dell isnt 100% usa designed, though dell austin was the lead at least in the initial design ( i think)
