My question is: Is your Tab locked to your carrier? Reason I ask is because I'm on Rogers and only Bell to carry these on the 12th (tomorrow). I couldn't find any information about unlocking these since all of the US and EUR versions seem to be factory unlocked.
I know that in Canada it might be different because we have 3 GSM providers that use the same frequency unlike in the states AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have completely different technologies.
I feel your pain, I went through the same thing this year when Bell got the I9000, and then again for this. But with the Tab, If you're going to use it data-only, just sign up with Bell on a MTM, and I guarantee the unlock for this will be out in less than a couple months, if not a lot sooner.
I imagine the monthly will be nearly the same between the two, Bell has been VERY competitive with Rogers rates on data since they went HSPA last year.
Rogers will be offering a shared data bucket though, for I think another $10 month over your normal data plan, but of course you can't use that if the device is locked.
Also, another thing to consider is the looks. The Rogers Tab will have a dark (metal?) backplate that has the same pattern as the Captivate's battery cover, the Bell version is (I'm pretty sure) going to be white on the back just like the Euro Tabs.
I'm getting the Bell version tomorrow regardless, then cover it with some sort of skin soon enough, but I'd prefer a non-white back out of the box.
I don't hate white because it's iconic with Apple, I hate Apple because they use white.
Apparently the Bell Galaxy Tab launch has been pushed back to the 17th. Few more days!
Also, from what I was told the Canadian Tabs still have the phone functionality...atleast Bell's does.

Hrm, where'd you hear about the launch push? I was really looking forward to wasting a good chunk of my long wet weekend playing with the one I'd planned on buying today.
Phone thing is good news though. Not that I'd planned on using one for a primary phone but having the option would be nice.
Know a guy who is in Bell corporate. Said the price is still being debated too. I hope it goes lower than the ridiculous $539 on contract that as reported earlier. Much lower...
Odd, my local Bell store rep said they had some actually in the store on Wednesday, since yesterday was a holiday.
As for the price, don't hold your breath. $539 is "reasonable" if it just comes with the iPad data plan on contract..hard for them to make up much subsidy with that one, even on a 3 year.
I fully expected to be ~$750 poorer (Tab, Svc fee, HST) before noon today.
There was an earlier report that they were being shipped to stores as early as Nov 9th, but I dont think Bell has officially announced them.
Obviously I'd be thrilled if they announce it within the next 3 hours!
I hope it can actually go on a phone plan..since it seems to have phone capabilities! Unlikely, but i can hope
Man I called half the stores in the Hamilton region and most of them either said that they havn't received the shipment yet or the release is being pushed till the 17th. This sucks royal balls because I wanted to spend my weekend with it too! If you guys manage to get some answers today, PLEASE keep me posted! I'm ready to blow off $$$ too and I can't wait. I'm Tab crazy biatch!

me too lol I was ready to pay it in full today, I was sad when I found out they weren't coming out today. I was told it should make calls if does it will make the 750 a little more worth it.
Bell Canada and Virgin Mobile Canada will be releasing the Samsung Galaxy S2 4G (the 4G is Bell's naming, its still 21Mbps) July 14th. Many retailer already received the unit, but they will go on sale only on the 14.
This thread is to collect information, tips, and rooting/unlocks tips.
Similar thread over howardforum: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...will-sell-it-unlocked?p=14466326#post14466326
Price is gonna be 599.95$ without a contract an around 150$ with a 3yr contract.
Sadly, it seem for reason I don't undersand that retailer, will not let the phone go out of the store un-activated (need a new contract or an existing customer transfering phone). The minimum "contract" seem to be a 30day 50$ plan from virgin, bell offer a similar but add initial fees, which virgin don't.
If anyone find a way around this, or store willing to sell without activating the phone, post it over here.....
So far Futureshop, Bestbuy and some the source all told me the same... But feel free to give it a try.
More to come shortly

From polling a few retailers (The Source, Future Shop, Bell Mobility Stores, Wireless Wave, etc.) I found it's pretty much hit and miss. Usually 1 store is willing to sell it to you off contract for every 4 asked, but, then that could change if they fly off the shelves.
Most of the store I found had either them on order (avg 6 units), or in stock (avg 3 units)... So be there early.
Was there any Bell store willing to sell off contract? (I haven't tried thoses.) Assuming they would be less flexible.

I found one Bell store willing to do it, but, there was a condition that it would be a final sale.
They can say whatever they want but any phone sold by Bell will have to be honored by their warranty program. You can talk to Bell corporate about this and they'll confirm it. They'll also tell you that if you want to buy the phone off-contract they can't refuse you. Store owners are just being dicks because they get no commission with no plan activation. Had the same sort of issues when the Nexus S was released in Canada and people wanted to buy off-contract since they were unlocked (despite Rogers/Telus/Bell claiming they were locked).

I dont think that would be legal... How would they enforce this..
Sell a 599$ phone, but say, no warranty for you.
Really, I am looking at a the source flyer, and it say 599$ with no contract. There is no place where it say you need a minimum 30 days plan required.
Other than: to get the reduce price with a X year contract you need a minimum 50$ plan.
I just don't know how to force them to sell me the phone, even if I think they are lying about the 30 day
I'm definitely going to look in to getting one off-contract, as I'm currently with Rogers...
Anyone know of any issues so far that would prevent the phone from working properly on Rogers?

I got the impression that he was referring to not being able to return the phone within the 14 day return period. I don't think he was talking about the warranty.
Sorry for the confusion.

My understanding is all that you'd have to do is root and unlock the phone, and it should work fine on the Rogers network.
News that the release date could be July 21st:
http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/07/12/b...p+(mobilesyrup.com)&utm_content=Google+Reader
When Bell announced they’ll be one of the carriers who will release the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G they never confirmed a launch date, only that it will be available “in the coming weeks”. Carriers usually state this just in case there are shipping issues or problems meeting software tests. Rumours surfaced over the past few weeks of a July 14th release, but we are now hearing the launch date is officially set for Thursday, July 21st.
Apparently us Canadians will be getting the latest software and Bell wants to ensure that enough supply is available. The internal doc we received says that Bell is “anticipating very strong demand for the device” and waiting for “adequate supply to arrive”. Samsung recently announced that worldwide sales of this Android has already topped 3 million in just 55 days. This will be available for $599.95 on a no-contract and it’s expected the 3-year price will be $169.95.
Every store I been to told me july 14. I don`t think they will push it to 21.
My Bell rep forbade my Best Buy from selling it before the 21st and I got confirmation of this via an internal memo. We have it, but can't sell it.
BS.... We will see..
Whether we want to believe it or not, it's the truth... I'm as frustrated about it as you are, as I sold my Nexus last week to pay off my Telus cancellation fees, and now I'm going to be phone-less another week and a half...
go to wireless wave or phone booth. they let you purchase the phone out right. the warranty is void if you unlock the phone no matter where you purchase the phone.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Yea. that was my plan, walk around im sure somebody will sell it..
Just got back from Future Shop. Their live display model is out, and I managed to play with it a bit.
They confirmed as well that July 14 is the release date.
I got a question for you guys: Why don't you just buy one from a UK site instead of waiting for Bell/Virgin's release?
Warranty will be void anyways if you buy from Bell or Virgin without contract. You have to pay $599 + activation + possible minimum plan + tax + cancellation fee(?).
If you order from Clove or Handtec, you can get a UK warranty (meaning to ship back if anything unfortunate happen to the phone...better than no warranty!). It'll only cost less than $640 including shipping.
Anyone frankly explain it to me?

No telling. Our carriers ruin everything. Could take six months. Mine is on the way to Texas!!
U.S. looks like it's coming to AT&T, according to FCC documents
According to FCC documents filed, it appears Samsung has at least applied for approval for AT&T ... http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-galaxy-note-headed-to-usa-on-att-says-fcc-30184411/
My hope is it will be here 1st or 2nd quarter of next year with AT&T, since that's who our family plan is with.
Has anyone heard any updates to this, since that was back on September 30th.
I have a 2 year old iPhone 3GS that I would love to replace with this.
All the best !!!

How to tell when a Samsung phone will be coming out in the US:
Start with the European launch date and add the number of days you can reasonable wait for a launch. Add 6-8 months and they might be ready to release it.
So it sounds more reasonable to expect a 2nd quarter U.S. launch since it was announced in September in Europe. I sure hope it's sooner though. It clearly blows away every device I've ever had, including the hyped-up iPhone !!!
I'm going to try and wait till May at the latest, since the warranty on my iPhone 4 is up on June. I hate not being protected...So I'll get the Note from the UK if it's not released by then, then just get a square trade warranty on it.
Unless it is an "iphone" don't expect any release from at&t within 6 months of it being released to the rest of the world. AT&T sucks at releasing non iJunk.
Walk into one with a blank stare, tell them you are looking for a smart phone and
I'd bet you 100 bucks they will START with the iJunk.
When the SGS2 was FINALLY released, I walked into a corporate store to look at
one, and the sales drone said "I think we have one, but I don't care for android, I like the iPhone". Well, when you have sales people who think like that, what do you expect them to push you into? Plus, when AT&T sold their souls to get the iPhone, you can bet there was some under the table deal that keeps something that would stomp the iPhone into dust. And you can bet there is probably more profit on iJunk/accessories than any other phone.
I quit buying on contract with at&t last year with the Streak. It's expensive as hell to buy one out right, but, over the long run, you come out ahead. Plus, I'm still on the unlimited data...as long as I'm a good boy, or until at&t changes their mind again.
Thanks guys, but you bumped my 13 day old thread...

Not True.
That's only true if the ETF($325 smart phone's) plus the contract price is higher then the retail price.
For the iPhone....The Retail price for the 4S 16GB is $650. So you are going to pay $200 on contract, and say you cancel the next month....that's a total of $525. Even if you include a $100 bill for the first month, that's still cheaper then buying a off-contract iPhone 4S!
It would make some sense if you got a lower monthly plan for not being on a contract, but fat chance on that. Instead, it's better to just buy on contract and let your potential ETF decrease by $10/month. When you want to leave ATT or get another phone, just sell it and buy another, you will be better off. The ETF is just there because the carrier is paying for a good portion of the phone for you.
This is still true for most Dumb Phones that are Free on contract. They can run $200 retail, and the ETF is $175..it's still cheaper to go with the contract, once again your monthly fee is the same, and the ETF decreases after each month on the network.
Now. I'm off contract on my iPhone 4. But that's because I get a cheaper monthly rate by being off contract. I use a iPad data only SIM in my iphone, which is the $30 Unlimited deal. The ETF after 16 months was $175...which is the cost for less then 3 months of service. I would be paying the Unlimited data sim anyway just to keep it...So this way I save a ton of cash.
Now if ATT get the Note...that's a $800 device! If ATT only asked $400 on contract that would still be quite the deal, as the Contract price plus the ETF would be $725...still cheaper then the unlocked retail version! And since ATT is what I would be using here in the US anyway, it really makes no sense for me to get the unlocked version. Now...if the Locked version does not have LTE, and does not work with my iPad SIM as my iPhone does, I may just bite the bullet and get the Internationale version anyway, that way I can go on using my data only device.(I use google voice for text and talkatone for voice, android has a Voip gmail google voice client as well)

Where would be the best and cheapest place to get a Note?
Has anyone ever used ... electroprise.com on Manhattan before? ... http://electroprise.com/samsung-galaxy-note-gt-n7000-gsm-hsdpa-quadband-unlocked-p-2911.html. I'm up for an upgrade, with AT&T, anyways and they say they have a Note for $399, with a plan, which seems pretty good (cost varies with the type of plan).
If I sell my iPhone 3GS for $150-200 then it's only about $200-250 extra for the phone. Has anyone heard of a great place(s) or offer(s) for the Note, with a plan (since I need to extend my plan anyways)?
I'm going to call electroprise.com today and see what the real deal is ... it seems too good to be true. FYI, my current intention is to wait until the Note comes to AT&T and get it for $200 possibly (it may be $400 anyways !!!), but I would have to wait 6 months, which is a total bummer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated ... all the best !!!

WOW this seems too good to be true LOL. $600 off contract? $400 on contract? This phone is not even offered for a contract on any US carrier. Not sure about this one...
I just read this on androidcentral.com (2011-11-06)
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note/131663-where-buy-galaxy-note-us.html ...
"Re: Where to buy Galaxy Note for US?
You can't get the Note from a US carrier yet. You will need to order international. Many have ordered from Handtec () without issue. They are currently shipping their second batch out. They have a choice of unlocked with no network logo or for slightly less, unlocked with a network logo on boot.
You can also order from Amazon Germany or clove.co.uk
You won't be able to take advantage of the 3g or 4g network on T-Mobile with the International version of the note. It does not have the antenna and chipset for the lower frequencies used on the higher speed network. You will only get voice and 2g speed out side of Wi-Fi. The Korean version of the Note with LTE is being released very soon and will be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset (like the Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile). This will likely be compatible with T-Mobile's higher speed network.
The International Note can be used with ATT HSDPA network without issue and at full speed. Some are using the unlimited pay as you go, non-smartphone plan (I think it is called gophone) with the note. I believe it is ~$50/month. Since ATT can only check the IMEI number on units it sells, you should be able to use an unlocked, international Note with this plan without having ATT change your plan to a more expensive "smartphone", limited plan.
-Alex-"
"I also found out from Wikipedia that AT&T has the following frequencies ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Mobility ... does everyone agree with these?
Radio Frequency Summary
The following is a list of known frequencies which AT&T employs in the United States:
Frequency Protocol Class
Frequencies used on the AT&T Network 850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
850 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
1900 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
700 MHz LTE 4G"
That means AT&T should match up well with Note's frequencies ...
HSPA+ up to 21Mbps 850/900/1900/2100
4G LTE
EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900
This is just my two cent worth ... maybe I should wait for the 4G phone ... aaarrggg !!! Like I said before, any help would be appreciated.

Yeah I saw the light XD. After experiencing what the Android can do(flash, bigger screen, better customization with ROMS and kernals, etc) I don't think I can go back to an iPhone. I've been loyal to having an iPhone since the first generation, the 4s is what threw me off the ship. Now I'm thinking about picking up a Note I thinking of picking it up from this guy http://www.ebay.com/itm/140636202852?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Exchange my Galaxy for an unopened one and resell it for $450, so minus that from $750 the phone will cost me around $300.
I'm not so sure about the website you posted, I haven't seen the Galaxy Note for less than $730. But what you can do is use your upgrade to buy an iPhone 4s 16gb for $200, resell for $650, sell your iPhone 3gs for maybe $150. I see someone did something similar here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338821

WTF are you smoking that this plan makes any sense? The note is not an $800 phone, it is a $700 phone that would cost ATT much less than that (550-600) in wholesale price. So you think you are "getting a deal" when you are just getting screwed like everyone else who goes on a contract.
No answer
Well I've been calling electroprise.com pretty much all day and the phone just rings after the message and prompts, so it may be too good to be true. I let everyone know if I find out anything.

http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/5504/samsung-galaxy-note--16gb--sim-free-unlocked-
Amazon - Do you agree with the financials on this?
Does this make sense ...
• I'm due for an upgrade with AT&T, so I can buy a sealed, brand new, iPhone 4S 16GB for $200 and sell it for $500-650, based on eBay research ... for a profit of $300-450.
• It looks like I can sell my 2 year old 3GS, for $100-250
• Amazon has the Note for $769.95 ... http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Unlocked-Android-Smartphone/dp/B0061YRDX6
Therefore, I should be able to make $400-700 selling the two iPhones, then buy the Note from Amazon for $769.95. So it would cost me $70-370 total for the Note. Do you all agree with this logic, or am I missing something?
Also, does anyone know how to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich on the Note yet ... is there a good forum link on "how to"? I've never had an Android before, so this is all new to me ... sorry for my ignorance.
Thanks for any help on this.

Ok, so who's spotted the Note 4 yet? Best Buy and Future Shop both list it in their flyer, but you call the store and they don't have a clue
Expansys.ca doesn't have pricing or delivery dates yet.
Anyone else find this elusive beast?

Oct 3rd for Canada? I don't think so. Most of the rest of the world still has it scheduled for mid-October. I think we'll be lucky to get it then.
Futureshop this morning and the guy I spoke to said that they won't even have display models on show until the day before launch - he said they even did that for the iphone 6's.
Hey guys, I work at a telecom company in Canada and we have a launch date for the Gear Live on october 2nd. We usually launch the watch with a smartphone so I am assuming that the release date will be on the 2nd or 3rd.

This would be awesome, but still seems like speculation. Crossing my fingers though ?
Just got an email from Expansys.ca about my pre-order... $849 for the Note 4... I think that's too high and I may hold off on it. When US carriers are selling it outright for $649, I just can't bring myself to paying $850.
Has anyone else found better prices?
Well... things escalated quickly.
They said the Note 4 would be shipping no later than this Thursday (Oct 2nd), but when they confirmed my order, it ended up being CDN$933 + shipping and tax, which put it close to $1100. I don't feel that any phone is worth that much. I cancelled my order and will be holding off for now.
Expansys is now showing the pre-order price of 999.99! Way too much!

That's pretty outrageous. I'm looking back at my Note 2's invoice and I paid $800 form them with express shipping and taxes included - two years ago. There's no justification for such a high price on the Note 4. But I have a feeling that they've artificially inflated that price - once it's in retail stores, they'll drop it quickly. I was just hoping to get it sooner, but not for a few hundred dollars more!
Can we just purchase in the USA and unlock here?

Be careful
I strongly suggest you make sure the model supports the LTE frequencies here in Canada.
The canadian model is sm-n910w8 and that's the one to get.
The Expansys one is probably the sm-n910s which is the international model and therefore LTE will be limited and not even work in the USA (AT&T).
Just get one from the big 3 (telus, rogers and bell).
You must get it with a plan but that doesn't matter, just go through with it and cancel 5 seconds after. You will NOT pay cancelling fees. Then you unlock the phone with whatever service you want.

I'm interested in getting the phone outright through Bell. Do you always have to get it with a plan? What a hassle. I'm use to buying unlocked phones, so this makes no sense to me. LOL

just be aware.....
in fact the sm-n900a and 900t wich are at&t and T-Mobile variant gonna work perfectly here...my former optimus g pro wich only at&t brought this model in north America was working perfectly on robellus since these carrier are using the same frequency....except for the newly 700mhz here in Canada wich in U.S.A they use already since awhile...personally I"m gonna wait for the 900w8 since they should be invailable in same time...
in fact the T-Mobile variant is even better since it would work on wind and videotron......

if you are already with bell...and want to keep your plan...you just have to buy it outright....however if your not with them...you"ll have to go with them with a plan... otherwise they will not sale you the phone...samething with any provider by the way....

I'm with Virgin, but they are basically Bell, so whatever Bell sells will work with Virgin - I really just want to avoid signing up for a plan, cancelling, and all that nonsense. I just want to buy and phone and set it up.
If Bell won't sell the phone, what are my options? Go with an unlocked non-Canadian LTE model?

virgin didn't sell the note 3...and it gonna probably the same with the note 4....your best bet is either your buy a U.S variant (at&t or tmo) or the Canadians variant 900w8 wich is the same then the 900a (at&t variant) on kijiji ad or ebay.....the us variant gonna cost about the same here with the custom fee and shipping+currency....

Hmm. Never heard of getting an AT&T or T-mobile phone from the states and using it up here. I don't really feel comfortable with that, since it would likely be a pain to get warranty service for it, no?

I'm also with Virgin and I have a great plan which I don't want to loose.
None of the providers will sell you the Note 4 but like I said, use them, get a plan and cancel it.
Bonus: it kinda pisses them off, I like to tell them to their faces that's what I'm doing.

So you go on a month-to-month plan (to get the phone outright), then cancel the plan right on the spot and keep the phone? LOL Do you lose anything? Like an activation fee or your first month payment for the plan?

Well, there are no activation fees, but yes you will have to pay the first month. It's a small price to pay for getting the phone asap. Also, Telus will sell it for around 900$ and if you think about it, expansys is asking 1000$ + shipping, so it's not really that bad of a hit.
I blame Samsung, I want to give them my money but they don't make it easy.
However, their stunned stupid face, when I unlocked my Note 2 right in front of them while someone was explaining the "plan" is priceless (remember the menu unlock thing...).
Ran across this interesting article. Does anyone know how this will affect GN4 users like me who bought a phone on the cheap from Best Buy?

Looks promising. I'm not sure if the Note 4 has the frequencies for the other US carriers though. I'd have to look it up. I need to get off sprint since their service is dismal in my area. I'd love to put my wife's Note 4 on T-Mobile.

Get that. From what I have read it does have GSM capability... How much I don't know. What I am wondering is... Is my phone considered payed for as I paid $165 out the door at bestbuy....
They're not gonna unlock the Note 4. If I can find the link, there's a good post on Reddit. I think the guy works for Sprint Corporate and explained the process. But it's only going to be for devices "Launched" after 02/15.
Except for the damn iPhones, they're allowing the 5C, 5s, 6 and 6+ all to be unlocked after 02/19/2015. I'm going off the top of my head here, I read this while at work. So even if you purchase a device after Feb it doesn't matter, unless it was officially launched after that point.
The unlocks will be automatic and done OTA once you reach the criteria. You have to have the device fully paid off, or paid your ETF if on contract. Some other rules and such which I don't recall.
Went and found the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/Sprint/comments/2ut91c/clarifying_ctia_and_sprints_unlock_policy/

Sounds like you did an upgrade subsidy. Not sure how long before Sprint considers it yours. The subsidized price is based on signing the 2 year contract renewal.

Yup... So like I said... I wonder when this phone will be considered mine/paid for... Well I could call Sprint and ask but if I talk to 3 different CS people I would probably get 3 different answers. Anyway, thanks for your input.

How true! And sad! In most articles regarding phone subsidies it appears it is included in the ETF.
Sprint will unlock your device for international use at any time, I switched to Sprint just this January, and 3 days later my phone was unlocked for international use. I did not buy it out right, my Note 4 has monthly payments still. You just gotta ask.
Now, they won't unlock it for domestic carriers until you pay it off though.

Per the info I've read, a subsidized 2yr contract must be completed, OR the ETF paid off. This will complete the process and allow Domestic SIM Unlocking. The phone, or payment plan etc had to be fully paid off (ETF/completed contract). Then it will be done over the air automatically.
Again though, this device (Note 4) will not be eligible. It's only devices "Launched" after Feb 1, 2015. Except for the bastard iPhones. They will get DSU, from the 5c onward.
Correct, International is always a "freebie" when you request it but won't make a difference in the US. If you're not paid off on your contract or haven't paid the ETF is it applies to you they won't unlock it.
