Well I don´t know in USA, but in México with my Uni I can´t connect to any 3G network as Universal has only for Europe and Asia networks, I think is the same for your country, shame...

T-Mobile 3G works on my I-Mate Jasjar in the Jacksonville Florida area. The only adjustments I had to make was a minor MMS settings change.
Anybody in the northwest US able to connect to T-Mobile's 3G network?
I try to force my band to WCDMA and specify the UMTS freq as 2100, but then it simply doesn't seem to want to register with the network. When I set it to auto, it appears to simply be using GPRS.
Somewhat related, anybody know of a way to force displaying an icon indicating EDGE vs default GPRS connection?
Edit: I just recalled that there's no EDGE support on the Uni, unless I'm mistaken, so disregard that...
Edit (again): So if I'm understanding this properly... The Uni only operates on UMTS/WCDMA/whatever 2100, not 1700, which T-Mobile US uses. It was designed for uk/other 3G usage, not future US 3G usage. So we've got 3G support outside the US, but as far as I can tell - we shouldn't be able to use 3G in the US, at least on T-Mobile's network, since they're using 1700 mhz band/AWS range, and the 2100 mhz band used elsewhere is not compatible. I THINK. I'm honestly just learning about this sort of thing now as I go, despite having had my Uni for a while and having known about T-Mobile rolling out 3G coverage for some time.

Could you give some more details on this?
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think the deal is basically, as postulated by orb3000 - no 3G for US Universal users.
I was told by a T-Mobile rep on the phone that if I can connect to 1700 or 2100 mhz band, I should be able to use 3G... So I wonder... Huh.

Ive heard not all areas have 3G on both bands. Probably your area doesnt have 2100 mhz yet.

So can you confirm if T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 as:
1700 down/2100 up
1700 voice/2100 data
1700 OR 2100?
Because I've seen a lot of different things saying different things. =/

T-Mobile uses 1700 AND 2100 mhz bands....sent and recieved data ARE NOT SPLIT between the two bands.....voice and data ARE NOT split between bands.
Ill check my speed tonight when I get off work....
I can see the difference between 3G and GPRS though. I have a HTC Wizard that supports EDGE, and my Imate JasJar is only slightly faster than my Wizard. My girlfriend has the new Mobile G1 and her 3G speed run rings around my Imate JasJar internet speed this is probably so because the age of our Universals.

I have a Qtek 9000 and am waiting for the 3G coverage for my area with T-Mobile which should be in the spring of 2009. Over the past few years I have done a great deal of research on this and have also spoken to very knowledgeable Tier 3 T-Mobile staff that are familiar with this and this is what they told me. The universal will work on the 2100 frequency with T-Mobile. T-Mobile will be using the 1700 & 2100 frequency bands in the U.S. for 3G frequency. I know when I visited my relatives in Germany in 2004 Year in the summer as I can speak, read & write German as good as English even though I am first generation in the U.S. which I visit my relatives every 5 years and due to visit them in the summer of 2009 year. The 2100 band was already released in the spring of 2004 year in Germany. But since T-Mobile has only certain cities available that have the 3G coverage in the U.S. which is spotty at this time. Since the T-Mobile G1 was deployed in October this should make the rollout faster in the U.S. for the 1700 & 2100 mhz frequency. Can you please confirm on your I-mate Jasjar on what your 3G speeds are? They should be at least 384 k.p.s. It is also nice to know that the send & receive data, voice & data are not slit between the two bands of 1700 & 2100 mhz frequency.

this is interesting stuff, i just got my jasjar as an anniversary gift from my girlfriend and i love the device however anyone that has used HSDPA which i had on my kaiser before i sold it 500-900k going to GPRS has been something that would make one want to cry, and its good news to hear this because i need some form of high speed again, and i'd like to confirm this working because i am going to get a t-mobile prepaid or flex paid sim ASAP to get this going, i am in new york anyone from around here to confirm 2100Mhz?

Funny, I was just trying to get an answer as to whether or not there was a delay in deploying 3G over 1700 vs 2100 mhz to a given area, and I ended up being told "definitively" that unless my handset is able to connect to both freqs, I would be unable to utilize 3G access. CONFUSION. I think there are some disconnects between staff at the T-Mobile customer support, and I haven't really gotten much further than what I would imagine to be tier-two tech support.
I trust in ATLDON's success story, so... Maybe I'll just have to wait and see.
Do you get a 3G indicator somewhere in the taskbar or system tray when you're connected? And what was the MMS setting you had to change? What server are you using for net access? Do you have the $6/mo T-MobileWeb access or one of the other plans?
Sorry for all the questions, just very curious and hopeful that I would soon be able to really use my Uni.

The 3G indicators don't work on the 6.1 Roms I use. I havent tried any of the WM 5 roms to see if their indicators work
The MMS connect, I had to change it from T-Mobile MMS to the Internet to send/receive multimedia.
I have the 19.99 unlimited data plan.
I use epc.tmobile.com
Are there any other US Uni users in different areas who can report 3G connectivity?
Thus far I've found my own interactions with T-Mobile tech support to be thoroughly useless in getting any sort of details on AWS/3G/2100mhz deployment (maybe I'm just not talking to the right people?)
So, a couple weeks later (and still impatient ) - anyone else in the US with a Universal able to access T-Mobile's 3G network?

Interesting. 3G has a maximum of 384Kbs to get faster you need HSDPA which AFAIK the Uni does not have...

Hello if someone could help me with my 3G connection inquiry, I would greatly appreciate it.
I bought this phone unlocked from Hong Kong and brought it back to Canada. But the 3G connection through Rogers won't work. I am able to connect to edge (When i pop in my sisters sim card which has a data plan, as my sim card currently does not have a data plan).
I talked to Rogers and they said that everything is compatable (After mentioning the phone frequencies and speed capabilities) and that the only reason 3G isnt working is that I have not configured my phone properly for 3G and at this moment it is configured for 2G (Edge).
I then contacted HTC and they said the reason was because "for the Rogers network, their 3G signal is operated on the 850/1900 MHZ band and the Touch HD2 operates on the 900/2100 MHZ band." Could this be the reason? Will i never taste the pleasures of a 3G connection?

since you have bought it in hongkong most probably you have the asian version. It comes with 900/2100 MHZ bands and as you mentioned ROger needs 850/1900 frequency.
You could also get Telstra version from Australia and unlock it as it has 850/1900 frquency so that you could get 3g. But not possible on the one you already have.
Yea its the frequencies. When I take my phones abroad, I always check what frequencies the country has. If the frequencies don't match, the phone won't work in terms of placing calls, 3G etc.

Among those of you with a deap knowledge of the inner working of HTC phone for 3G networks.
Is HTC doing something to phones for each carrier to lock the phone to a specific carriers 3G network and no other.
I'm asking because I was talking with a freind of mine who was given a HD2 as a part of a promotion for use on AT&T 3G network (850/2100). He uses T-Mobile and tried to get it to work with his T-Mobile SIM with no success. He also told me he had a conversation with someone from HTC that told him that he would no beable to get his HD2 to work on T-Mobile because the hardware will not work with T-Mobiles 3G network (1700/2100).
If this is the case does anyone know if it changable, is it a Firmware issue that can be changed or is it like hard wired physically?
Then the question is if we are buying these phone, some through contracts others outright, do we want to told whos service we have to use!!

3g is radio/hardware dependent. he'll unfortunately be stuck on EDGE.
He will have no issues using the phone with T-mobile usa. He will not get 3G because of the bands. He will just have edge. But calls, mms, text, email, and internet will all function properly.

So you are on Claro in Peru?
For 3G you need a phone with 3G 1900 support. If it is the T-Mobile version, that would have 3G on 1700/2100 bands which would be no good. If you got an AT&T handset (850/1900) it would work for 3G for you.
You need to understand what 3G support your version of the phone has. For example mine (Telstra Australia) is 850/2100 - which would not be able to pick up 3G in your network - however it works excellent with Telstra (850) in Australia and currently working well with StarHub (2100) in Singapore.
Your phone is quad band - but that is GSM quadband not 3G - it is 3G dual band and that is what is important for your connection.

Question: is there a HD2 version with 850 - 1900 band ????

No, but the Telstra HD2 will pick up the 850MHz signals where they exist. There is no HD2 with the 1900MHz UMTS band at the moment

Mostly a lurker here over the years, love the site and forums - great community! I'm running latest JG4 Optus on my SGS with the new "2200 score" lagfix - awesome!
Anyone else getting really slow data on Telstra? I have tried telstra.wap telstra.corp telstra.internet telstra.iph all of these AP's give extremely slow data, and the phone symbol at the top flicks between 'H' (assume HSDPA) and 3G at times. I'm talking 0.4mpbs.
My friend is on Optus and his *cough* iPhone is getting 4.45mbps, in comparison my speed is nowhere near this speed. I am in metro Melbourne.
Anyone else have slow Telstra experience or know a trick or setting to help out - would be much appreciated!

i could be wrong, but i dont think the galaxy s supports telstra network very well, if at all. dunno, not real tecchy, but its what ive heard round the traps. something to do with the bands the phone supports (900/2100 or 2200ish) and telstra is 850 something or other. smarter people than me will be able to clarify.
Correct, Telstra uses 850mhz and 2100 (apparently). But, only some variants support 850, and Telstra are releasing their own for that frequency. So I'd imagine that 2100 simply has lower coverage (Optus on the otherhand uses the more standard 900mhz frequency).
If you already own the phone, you may wish to consider moving to an optus based network (such as Exetel for Virgin). However, it is also entirely possible/probable that the galaxy S ships with a chip that supports 850mhz, and it simply needs to be enabled (I have seen threads which showed a way to apparently enable it).
Or, it may be just reception probs

It possibly does, but which country did you purchase it in? Remember, some countries might have had it disabled (because they don't use 850, or have other services on those frequencies).

Hi Andrew Purchased in Australia from Allphones "unlocked". Tried the 850 band turn on and various other fiddles in that debug/phone settings area relating to 3G and HSDPA - unfortunately the max I've seen on Telstra is 0.40Mbps, my friend gets 4.45Mbps on iPhone/Optus
Coverage in my area is usually great, I'm in Melb metro area and normally full bars.

mate it might be worth a look over at whirlpool forums, they seem to have a fair bit of stuff about telstra and the galaxy s over there, so you should hopefully find some help

Telstra has WCDMA 2100 and 850 bands, but the Galaxy S badged versions of this phone only support quad band in GSM, it is triband on WCDMA and unfortunately 850 isn't supported Telstra will be selling a different version of this phone shortly ("Captivate" badge!?!?!?) which WILL support their 3.5G 850 network at full speed.

I am planning to buy MT4G, unlock it and use it on another carrier with compatible frequencies of course. Will I be still able to get updates using for example a wifi connection? or should I download updates manually? Is there something that I will lose when I use the phone on another carrier ?

The reason why compatible is in quotes is because yes the phone would function and make calls on that network, but you will lose 3G and HSPA+ service as AT&T's equivalents operate on a different and incompatible spectrum.
I would also assume that you would not receive OTA updates either.

Overseas, on a network that is compatible with regard to GSM/ UMTS frequencies. So the only way to get updates is to download them from forums like this one?

I don't know for absolute certain, but I'm 95% sure you wouldn't recieve OTA since it goes out over the network your phone is connected to.
You can usually snag the update from here, but unfortunately, a lot of people didn't run aLogcat to log the download and get the link. Including myself, though I'm trying now with my second device.

Another question, does anyone know if this device works on UMTS band I 2100 ( 2100/1900)? I really can't make up my mind because it's not clear on T mobile website. It says UMTS 1700/2100/AWS and this looks like it's referring only to UMTS IV

The phone is compatible with almost every gsm band the specs are:
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
HSDPA/HSUPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
In the US most carriers are using GSM 850/1900 and 3G 1700/2100 you will only get OTA from T-mobile in the US if you are using their cellphone service or you can hope and wait for the update to show up here on XDA in the forum.

Actually I am a telecom engineer so I know about the terms. You didn't get my question about the bands. Look here for example support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm24233.xml?&A2L.SERVICE=FeatureSummary
The listed Bands: 1 (2100) and 4 (AWS 1700/2100)
and that clearly shows that G2 supports 2 UMTS bands , 1 and 4
1 is 2100 paired with 1900 ( EU)
4 that is used by T mobile in the US.
So I am confused because on this page mytouch.t-mobile.com/mytouch-4g-features#/specs-and-manualsthey listed the bands like this
Bands 1700/2100/AWS that's why it's not clear for me if MT4G supports UMTS I or not.

The listed Bands: 1 (2100) and 4 (AWS 1700/2100)
and that clearly shows that G2 supports 2 UMTS bands , 1 and 4
1 is 2100 paired with 1900 ( EU)
4 that is used by T mobile in the US.
So I am confused because on this page mytouch.t-mobile.com/mytouch-4g-features#/specs-and-manualsthey listed the bands like this
Bands 1700/2100/AWS that's why it's not clear for me if MT4G supports UMTS I or not.

AWS is the data delivery method used only by Tmo in the US. So the 4G service may not work outside the US but according to the phone specs it states that it supports UMTS and GPRS/EDGE so it should support 3G UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ and gprs/edge for 2G everywhere. Ill test my HD (from England) when I get to new york in a day or so and see if I can get proper 3G speeds.
Todays smartphones are designed to be used worldwide with full service as much as possible.
AWS is just another name of UMTS band IV. This is the only UMTS band the MT4G supports, so you'll be able to use it for 3G on carriers that use this band. You can see the list of bands and operators that use them here:

In short, outside of the US, Canada, and Chile you're out of luck for 3G. You'd be able to use 2G fine though.

Frequency bands differ for different technologies on the same phone. For example there are 2 versions of Nexus one one for ATT and one for T mobile although they work on GSM level because the support both GSM bands on T mobile and ATT but not the UMTS bands on both networks. UMTS and GSM frequencies are not necessarily the same for each network and most probably they won't be the same. In my country we licensed 3G services ( UMTS) on 2100 band or UMTS 1 . GSM on 900 and 1800 only.
Can someone provide me with the FCC id from the back of the phone ?
I tired to search for it on the web but I don't think what I found was the correct one.

I went to T-mobile store today, the guy was helpful and he printed out the official full technical specifications for the device that he pulled out and here what I got:
3G/UMTS Bands
Band I / UMTS2100 Yes
Band II / 1900 No
Band IV 1700/2100/AWS Yes
Band V/850 No
Band VII/ 900 No
The page was titled " Enablers" and listed specs for GSM and UMTS bands with their features. So I think this ends it for me, it does support both bands I and IV.

Did it work with you in 3G speed in England ?
Good luck but I've taken my nexus one all over the planet... you'll get 3g in the countries listed above plus Japan (softbank only) but I haven't gotten 3g anywhere else....

@OP: have you gotten the MT4G to work with UMTS Band I frequencies?
I got the update by only using my friend's t-mobile sim card, I think I got it via wifi since he doesn't have data plan.

The reason why compatible is in quotes is because yes the phone would function and make calls on that network, but you will lose 3G and HSPA+ service as AT&T's equivalents operate on a different and incompatible spectrum.
