and you should use perm root
If you're on 2.2/2.3.15 still, you might want to update to 2.2.1/2.3.340 before rooting. Go to settings/about phone and check Android system version and system version.
how to root droid x
honestly i would just use perm root on z4. all of the phones ive ever rooted and the droid x was the easiest?wow i was quite surprised. I almost hope that the general public dont figure this out cause ill start losing money!!

Thanks guys for all your replies. WOW!! Super fast root! I wish my evo was this fast! Hopefully they come up with something like this for the EVOs. Unless there already is something.
Thanks again!!

how to root a droid x 2.2
I have tried many rooting methods and I found Z4root 1.3.apk to be the fastest and easiest way to root. If and when you use this app it starts looping and doesn't finish you simply perform a battery pull and retry the permanent root using z4root 1.3 again and it will work the second time. You may need to try a third time but in rare cases.
sorry for the super late reply. Yeah I mean like a Rom.

Do you know if there will be an updated z4 that will be available for when Gingerbread officially comes out? I used z4 and absolutely love it!

Make sure USB debugging is enabled before starting the root process. Are you using gingerbread or froyo?

Why do people ask that? Once you root, you can have ANY version of stock rom. Or run less stock roms. It's all win.No, you shouldn't recieve OTA updates once you've flashed. But root users will have whatevers pushed OTA long beforehand. Plus you can over/underclock, screen capture, do backups, and run RealHDMI with root.
TBH is in the process of right now releasing a leaked Moto build of Gingerbread 2.3.3. As of right now, they have been unable to root it, as all known root methods appear to no longer work. Anyone want to tackle it?
obviously not gonna be easy....if TBH can't do it.. I doubt anyone can
Don't think anything is impossible. They just got the release yesterday. It sometimes takes a collaboration of several devs to get root.
If my download ever finishes I gonna try like hello and throw everything I have at it. Lol.

i have an idea about getting root but im not sure if it will work or not but pretty much instead of rebooting after installing 2.3.3 you install the su.zip file found somewhere on xda and you should have root but im not 100% sure

That will soft-brick the phone and you'll have to SBF from RSDLite. You can't install any other zips directly after installing a ROM or it won't pass the signature verification on reboot.

well the nexus s/one use a method which requires the bootloader to be unlocked in order to obtain root so technically speaking they are the same in this case
so far though i have been reading about a gingerbreak exploit from the same guy who released rageinthecage exploit
maybe if we contacted him he might release gingerbreak so we can have root access
that sucks

Search the market for "Superuser" and there is an app that has comments stating it worked for GB on N1.
I downloaded it and ran it and it seemed to have done the first part of what it needed to do fine... but now the next step is flash this .zip update that is on the memory card through recovery...... I don't want to be the genea pig as I need my phone atm...
EDIT: Just read luigi's post.. not sure now...

i am pretty good with computers but i am a noob when it comes smartphones, the play is my first smartphone and it didnt take long for me to get bored so i started trying emulators out. Ive now got psx4droid, gameboid & other emulators on here running nice & smooth, But all i keep reading now is about rooting etc and started to feel like im missing out!
what do you really gain from rooting?
and how easy is it to brick a phone while rooting?
i have been reading this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098736
is this correct for my play (from uk)
any help/advise would be greatly appreciated!
if you dont have a reason to root, really there is no need, root gives you r/w access to the /system/ and /data/ folders, it will let you theme you android, backup you apps and clean cache's that you normally couldnt, another good reason to root is for apps like "adfree android" this will remove ads from apps and website, making some free apps just as good as there payed brothers you can also use root to keep things like busybox updated
You can imagine rooting as using a computer with full administrator rights. It will allow apps to have access to system files we normally cannot access. This allows you to freeze or remove bloatware. Use overclocking software and backup software just to name a few.
It is pretty hard to brick a phone by rooting. Its if you unlock your bootloader and start playing with custom kernels and roms that you start playing a little more dangerous.
Hope this helps a little.

if your using 2.3.2 you can root using gingerbreak or gingersnap, but if you have 2.3.3, that cannot be rooted by normal means. and you have to unlock your bootloader and flash a rooted system image, if you unlock you bootloader, you will forfit any official support from sony
yea im on 2.3.3 i tryed gingerbreak 1.1 & 1.20 but they didnt work
by sony support do you mean updates yea?
If you delete something that isnt supposed to be(from sony preloaded s/w)...you mite end up bricking the play....if you delete useless stuff only you wont brick infact would gain speed and space on play...
I deleted the Timescape, Twitter stuff, sony wallpapers, android wallpapers and brucelee game and etc(dont remember now)
The fone worked fast and gave space....you could also move softwares from fone to sd card thru root too(one's which dont give option on unrooted device)
but always make a backup of everything, id say use titanium from market, its free, it would need super user and some other stuff...

If the phone is SIM locked the bootloader is locked, so if you wanted to root it by unlocked the bootloader you would have no luck, If you're still on 2.3.2 the gingerbreak apk root method will work for you.
Rooting the phone won't have any affect on the carrier. Well I don't think so anyway.
Back on topic, I rooted my previous android phone as soon as I got it (a ZTE blade) it was a great phone fully featured and good value. With the root came custom roms, adfree apps, screenshot tools, remote access etc. Rooting the phone is great if you have an inner nerd and you want to tinker with the phone.
I'm rooting my xperia play soon.

No. Unless you unlock it yourself it will still be locked. Sim free just means your phone will take any sim card. Its not locked to 1 network (sim locked)

I am using DooMKernel v6 (cause I like it), with this kernel you have CWM just flashing by fastboot boot.img (guide in that topic) and then you can flash .zip file in first post here
1. Is it for Locked or Unlocked bootloader?
2. Is it Deodexed?
So you need to unlock the BL. With not rooted stock fw you can't backup your ta partition before doing that

I have UNLOCKED bootloader, root and TWRP recovery.
Anyway, I've got an answer. Thank you, EmeraldTimer for uploading rom. I will try to deodex it
Dude none of that is what gave you root. Flashing DooMKernel is what gave you root access. You will never loose root with a unlocked boot loader and a custom kernel.

Yes you will lose root, but you may get it back anytime and in no time by simply flashing a superuser zip (which this effectively is, it's simply a superuser flashable zip). Preferrably one of the newer superuser management tools like SuperSU or Superuser by Koush. Superuser by ChainsDD is showing it's age and doesn't work properly anymore.
I flashed doomlords 1.25 supersu zip from his doomkernel thread and I hav root as well..

While we don't have an exploit, can we not just flash .434 then root, backup TA, unlock, flash or upgrade to .253, root again then relock and restore TA?

This would work. However messing with TA can hard brick your phone if something goes wrong. There is a less risk way to root .253 without touching TA.
1. Install .434 and root
2. Install CWM or TWRP recovery for locked bootloader
3. Flash pre-rooted 253 zip from bootloader
4. Use flashtool to flash .253 kernel, baseband and FOTA
Now you got a rooted .253
pre-rooted .253:

Well, uuhm... how can the knowledge, that putting a su binary and a su rights management program on your device via a flashable zip results in root access, NOT be common? Isn't that what it really is all about?
I'm a 100% with @Michealtbh on this one. Too many peeps which know very little to nothing about the very basic must-know-how-it-works-things around these days. Guys "doing stuff" to their devices should possess a very basic understanding of system mechanics, IMHO.

I really don't think you have the right to dictate what people do and don't know. Not to mention commenting on what people don't know it's the opposite to the aim of these forums.
At least for people benefited from this thread so it's served a purpose. This is a forum not a Wiki you can't attack people for what they do and do not know the intrinsic knowledge needed its quite alot and can only acquired through time and Redding the right threads.
In my own situation my previous Sony was an arc that at the time needed an exploit to root. After that I had a nexus that needed no exploits due to its nature. Now I'm back on Sony and I just assumed we still needed per -software exploits. The thread is filled with people talking about losing root with this upgrade so I just assumed and waited for a new exploit to be discovered. I did not know that the exploit was not needed if your unlocked. So sorry for not knowing all that you know I'll make sure to petition for a sticky that you can dump your worldy knowledge their and so we implement a criteria that you cannot post on this forum until you know everything in the post. How does that sound?
