I am the recent buyer of a new Xperia Play, and I'm doing my research before getting it here in order to be ready to unlock its bootloaders and root it ASAP (I even know now that you don't need to touch the bootloaders for root, but you know what I mean ). The matter is, the peculiarities of this phone may be a bit hard to understand for people who come from other phones. I think it'd be a good idea to get a feeling about which phones we come from, so to say.
I am using a Samsung Galaxy S which I will sell once I have my Xperia.

The Xperia Play has kinda cornered a market.
All Android phones run the same stuff. But the Xperia Play can control them better.
Unless you want a slimmer phone, or 1080p recording, or 12mp camera. Why buy another Android phone?
The Xperia Play will likely play all Tegra 2 games fairly well. Especially since you will be able to overclock the Play to nearly 2ghz fairly soon.

Should I wait for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 which comes out June 8th. Or should I get the acer a500?
I'm not a Samsung fan but their new tab looks promising. I love the A500 but the Samsung will likely be an easier nut to crack if you want custom roms and kernels.

Depends what you needs are. The Acer is a nice tablet, but if you can do with out the full USB host and don't mind paying a little more, the tab 10.1 looks like the better choice.

Not really. Running stock they're pretty much the same. Samsung is a now an update partner with Google so updates may come quickly.

I wouldn't read to much in to that, everyone knows Samsung has been the worst with pushing updates, not to say that can't change.
But yes HC is all the same, so the overall feel will be the same, but the Samsung is much lighter and features IPS I think.
With that said, I returned my Acer only because of the lack of customization for the time being. If this changes I'd buy it again. Until than I'm hoping a rooted nook color will suit my needs.

I'm in the same boat as you. On one hand, I really do love the Samsung's form factor. At the same time, it doesn't have HDMI out, USB, or microSD. However, Samsung is supposed to be a part of that new policy Google announced today which would guarantee updates for 18 months, plus it will be easier for the devs here to crack. I don't know how good Acer will be with updates.
Ugh, I don't know what to do either. I was GOING to buy the Acer today, but saw the Samsung and decided to wait....AHHHHHH
I would wait for the 3.1 update with better USB support. When it lands I think a lot of people are going to regret not buying a device with usb functionality like the a500.

You're gonna want that HDMI... its mirroring on your TV. Lots of ways to use that besides watching movies...
I have debated all this myself. Always new devices on the horizon. I really like the Acer and am keeping it. I just got the case from staples and love it. USB is huge for me.
Is DLNA the same or at least as good as HDMI out?
sigh.
the 10.1v is confirmed to not have a microsd slot, however the 10.1 more than likely will.
it has a micro sd card. You are looking at the 10.1v

There's no harm in waiting. If you can wait, wait. When the Samsung comes you'll be able to make a choice based on what's actually there vs. rumor and speculation.

Well its not really rumor. It has a set release date and specifications.
So im most likely going to get a tablet in june and i was wondering what i should get.
There's always the iPad and then the new galaxy tab is coming out so idk suggest.
I would have suggested the Galaxy Tab 10.1 before I found out it was Tegra 2 based. I personally wouldn't buy any Tegra 2 based tablet due to the ridiculous video playback limitation.

Explain?
I'm looking to get a tablet soon too, and the 10.1 coming out soon was what I was thinking of. The xoom is nice, but screen isn't large enough. The other downside to the 10.1 that I know of is that it's only going to have the proprietary port from Samsung and not USB or anything else, yes?

Tegra 2 is incapable of playing high profile mkv files smoothly. Basically it would mean having to transcode all of my media. I refuse to do that, since even the ORIGINAL iPad can play high profile mkv files flawlessly (with XBMC), as can our Epic 4g's.

Ahh, gotchya. Thanks for the info. I wasn't planning on using it for movies but that's good to know. Is the Tegra 3 a solution to this or just a next gen quad core with the same flaw?

Tegra 3 is just a next gen quad core, but it almost certainly will fix the flaw. Even if they didn't, technically the quad core would be powerful enough to just use the cpu to software decode the video most likely.

I saw that article too. Oddly enough, I also came across this one:
http://www.stuff.tv/news/phone/rumo...-gearing-up-to-launch-a-new-playstation-phone
So we're not the only ones thinking about this sort of thing. My thoughts on the matter is that we very well may see one, but I have a feeling it won't be until the whole Gaikai game streaming becomes a reality. Then it would make a lot of sense to have a phone that could connect to the service to play the back catalog. Or they might release something to help push PlayStation Mobile. However, for right now and despite how much I really want one, I don't think Sony will do it when they're still trying to get people interested in the Vita. It's just too bad that the Vita still feels unfinished and wanting to me.
OnLive was possible and worked very well on Play. Maybe Sony decide to give some love for their old customers, and even give us PS1/PS2/PSP emulation (via Gaikai of course), I'm not asking for PS3 or PSV games on old hardware like XPlay has .
I was watching the release of the ps4 and while they were talking about backwards compatibility it looked like a cosmic flow style ground. Isn't much but even without it I truly believe we will see a true play station phone.

I kinda wondered why it had two cameras, a 3G data connection, a microphone and so much more and wasn't a phone itself. Granted, how awkward it would've been awkward to hold the device up to your ear, but they invented Bluetooth for a reason. It's unfortunate they couldn't have made it work with the Android OS, or at the very least given the device a proper XMB UI. The new Bubble UI is too kid-like and doesn't look that great in the first place.
Today has been the conference of Sony in the Mobile World Congress here in Barcelona, and the past week was Sony's Playstation event.
No Plastation mobile phone has been shown in neither of the two shows, so there you have the plans of Sony of making a successor for the Xperia Play.

The Playstation Vita was going to be with a sliding pad like the Xperia Play or the PSP Go, but woth that design it had heating problems and Sony had to use the desing we all know for the console.
