[Q] Blackberry view - Acer Iconia A500

How can I get my Iconia to display Huffington Post in the normal way and Not the Blackberry view. I can type in the adderss ---.com and it adds /Blaackberry.
thanks
Secular

Most browsers have a setting where it "declares" itself as a mobile or a desktop version. Some sites show a different page depending on what the browser says. For me, I have set my Dolphin browser to say it's a desktop, and problem solved. I can't help you with the default one though, I have removed it some time ago.

Go to Settings -> Advanced and change Viewing mode to Desktop. Should help you with most of the sites, but there are still ones that recognize it as a mobile device. My Desire HD opens the desktop version but the Iconia is still recognized as a mobile device
EDIT: Just tried it with the site you want to open - unfortunately it's the mobile version again.
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App

Most sites now also have a link, usually in the header or footer of the content, to switch to "Full view" or something similar...
Edit: huff post has a View Desktop option at the bottom, click it. Enjoy.
And if that don't work, try http://www.huffingtonpost.com/?m=false

dont work
Nothing youve suggested works. Always goes to /Blackberry.
There is no desktop toggle at the bottom, nor a relative setting. I am set to desktop though.
Didnt used to have this problem.

Even the direct link with /?m=false ....??? No idea then

Did you try clearing your cache, etc. The tablet may have some residual info of the site and loads it that way to optimize the load time.
If you clear the cache, and navigate directly to the desktop site, you might be ok.

I doubt it would work because I have never opened the site the OP wants in desktop mode and still got the mobile version.

Really?!?
An entire thread dedicated to user agent at the Huffington Post?!?
To the OP. Write an email to them telling their webmaster to get off his dead azz and find an up to date script that detects user agent correctly instead of the ancient one he's using.
That's the only way you're going to be able to see the site the way you'd like to.
If any of y'all want to see something funny, go to:
http://whatsmyuseragent.com/
Try at least two different browsers, and see how most sites detect your OS, and browser. You'll be surprised!

TRYING to access youtube.com FULL site on a Vodafone X1

I go to youtube.com but it redirects to 'http://m.youtube.com/?client=mv-vf-uk'. When I click on 'View desktop version' it justs redirects me to that same site.
When I copy the link location of the 'View desktop version' link it is actually 'http://www.youtube.com/?nomobile=1&client=mv-vf-uk&gl=GB&hl=en-GB'
I have tried 'http://www.youtube.com/?nomobile=GB&hl=en-GB' and 'http://www.youtube.com/?nomobile' but they still redirect me to to 'http://m.youtube.com/?client=mv-vf-uk'
Does anyone have a solution to my problem?
Do a search on the forum to change your "user agent".
Currently websites are detecting that you are on a mobile device and re-directs you to a mobile version of the site if available.
Changing your user agent will full the website into thinking your another device instead.
youtube
I can get the full youtube site on my xperia, but it won't play any of the videos when i select them. Any ideas to what i could do?
Thanks

search a few pages back for desktop youtube / flash on the xperia.
i can goto youtube.com - pick any video and it plays straight in the page in opera, works a treat.
Incidentally, when youtube detects your on a mobile, there is a "View desktop version" url at the bottom of the page - same with most sites.

you wouldnt happen to have the link would you? when i search for user agent it comes up with too many results to sort thru
Did a quick search on google and i changed the value of HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Platform to Windows NT 5.0 and then Windows NT 5.1 but neither of them worked. I performed a soft reset after each registy change.
I have also gone into about:config on Opera and channged the 'User Agent' feild to 3 to spoof sites into thinking that its IE6 but it still doesnt work'.I also performed a soft reset after this.
Any ideas on this one? There must be other people out there with Vodafone X1s who are having/solved this problem
My Vodafone X1 with a Vodafone SIM reaches normal YouTube just fine. Think I just clicked on the link at the bottom of the mobile version.
Saying that, I can't actually watch the video, just get a grey screen and after a while some RGB bars.
Really? That sucks ass, mine just keeps going to the mobile version with the webpage http://m.youtube.com/?client=mv-vf-uk... very annoying.
Try installing http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=127398&d=1225817419
Sthoeft said all he did was install that and he coud view the videos on the full youtube site
Solution:
- Clear cache and cookies in opera
- close Opera
- Retry, but click on "Show Desktop version" at the youtube landing page.
Worked for me.
Are you sure you don't have "mobile view" ticked in settings?
Find show desktop version and install myflash on your device, then youtube works on your pc.

Changed that settings and removed the custom user agent string under "user prefs" and now not getting redirected!
Cheers!
a couple of comments;
1. My X1i can access desktop version of Youtube w/o modifying any registry setting. Yes, first time when you access it'll bring you to the mobile version instead (m.youtube.com), but there should be a link (very small print though, you need to scan through to pick it up) in the mobile page that will enables you to jump to the desktop version. You shouldn't be required to modify your X1i in order for that to happen.
2. Even if you can go to the desktop version, you won't be able to play the video if you do not have Flashlite 3.1 installed. Do a google, once you install, you will be able to play the youtube video like you would on your PC/desktop.
3. A more efficient way to access *ALL* the youtube videos will be using an application specifically designed to access Youtube. Do a google in this forum, there's a tried and tested Youtube application that works on X1i.
4. LAstly, if you really need to find the setting to inform the site that your device is not X1i, User String may not necessary be the only value that the web site would look. See this link http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=103290&pid=766907&st=0&#entry766907
I think what people fail to mention is that the full Youtube website works over wi-fi just fine.. though when connected through hsdpa/gprs (via vodafone live) we automatically get redirected to the mobile version of the website, no matter what.
This is also why the "youtubeplay" app cannot access the cookie for FLV playback.
Has anyone found a way around this problem?
On your phone go to live.vodafone.com, then go to Info -> My Phone Bill. In there you will find "Web Preferences". Change the display option to "Do not adapt any sites".
Hope this helps.

I dont' have any problem using the youtube app to access all the youtube videos.
The Voda X1 are set to use the Wap APN instead of the Internet one, which makes some third party apps which connect to the internet not work correctly. Try changing Settings -> Connections -> Connections -> Advance -> Select Networks to WEB

MySpace.com blocked?

I can't figure out a way to get to MySpace.com via the phone's browser. Any attempt to visit the URL just gives me an ad for the Android app (which I hate). There are links to the (worthless) mobile site and the desktop version of the site, but the link they provide to the desktop version just gets intercepted by their stupid advertisement again, making it inaccessable. Does anybody know a workaround for this problem?
I really wish there was a browser setting to tell the browser to just identify itself as a desktop browser instead of a mobile one, I can't stand it when I get automatically redirected to a mobile version of a site every time I visit it.
Welcome to the world without Microsoft where everything is called "OPEN" but your every move is limited and controlled.
I have noticed many other "controls" in the browser which I hate. None of that stuff ever happens on MICROSOFT products, everything is REALLY open, not "open source dictatorship", Google style.
yea that myspace desktop version being unavailable is really annoying being that the desktop version works better and faster than the myspace app itself....i dnt even understand how it is blocked and y!!!!

This has nothing to do with the phone. This has to do with the website itself. You never have these issues on MS products because MS products don't let the webserver know if it is a mobile browser.
I like your misguided conspiracy theory thou... keep it up.
surely you can change how the client identifies itself, im sure this is in IE settings, or was that opera, or a reg setting, ho hum ...

It doesn't work correctly half the time. I am a web developer and have had more issues with the wings browser than the G1's.. There is a reg setting but I can't change other peoples reg settings.
And before you know it we will have the same settings on the G1 to do similar things.

Open the browser and enter the following in the address/search bar: about:debug then enter. Nothing will change with the current page but now go to settings. You will see a Debug menu. Select that then tap "uastring" and choose "Desktop".
type in about:debug znd hit enter.
Go into your settings, select debug and change the UAsfring setting to desktop
The about:debug does work, but my Xoom looses that setting after opening the browser a few times. Anyone know of a way to make it permanent?
What I am noticing is that the setting it keeping, but it is like the sites are saying "Oh, you think you are a 'Desktop' but I know better you clever XOOM" Bam! Mobile site.
Argh...
Anyway, each time I see this I go back into the debug settings and sure enough it is still set to 'Desktop.' I try the site again, and I get redirected to the mobile version.

not sure if its the same because I haven't done this on my xoom, but on my droidx, when I change the uastring after a while it goes back to mobile (a couple don't because of cookies) but if I do about:debug and go look at the uastring it still says desktop but its really lying to you because it isn't and I have to reselect it or select android then reselect desktop. I hate how it does this, looks like it kept the setting but it really didn't.
When the UAString is set to "Desktop", the device uses the following useragent:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_3; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.16 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0 Safari/533.16

Why is it trying to emulate Safari? Just a little stab at Apple? Wouldn't it make more sense to have it emulate Chrome or Firefox?
And if any devs are out there, could someone PLEASE give us an option to set our useragent manually? It's frustrating to have sites think they can go around restricting content to mobile devices.

MiƱe is doing this also. I went to pcmag.com and did the whole debug thing and it still says desktop but is still giving me the mobile site. Ugh!
I set about:debug as a bookmark to make my life a little bit easier until this is resolved.
You can also use a different browser like dolphin. Am i the only person that has not run into this problem? I'm using the stock browser and all my sites load as desktop, even facebook (seen someone comment on that site).

From what I understand its up to the developers of websites to differentiate between "Android" which is tablets, and "Android Mobile" which is phones.

You are correct, but isn't that a little ridiculous? I mean the other browsers deliver us a desktop experience with no problem. I guess I understand the desire for the browser to be recognized as Android-specific, but relying on websites to change their code ultimately results in a less-than-ideal experience for the user. I don't know what a website's motivation would be to change their code. From their standpoint, I think it would seem like we are expecting them to make changes so that our substandard app will work. The websites will probably catch up, but meanwhile, shouldn't the stock browser be able to bring us as satisfying an experience as a third party app does?

You make a very good point here. And I guess the sites in question are actually the better sites that redirect a user to alternative content (low-res video or non-Flash pages) based on the browser's signature. Since they already consider that, they may be more likely to respond to user requests and feedback and change their code. Our browser type should begin to show up in their web traffic reports, too. But I think it'll be a slow-going change because in the whole lineup of browsers, we're a minority. Personally, I'll be more apt to open Dolphin to view a page that isn't displaying in desktop mode, long before I would hunt down a webmaster email address and send a note. I'm not even sure exactly what to ask for in the note. If anybody would care to provide a post with some proper terminology, that might help the cause.

As I understand it, we can select "desktop" as our user agent, but that identifies our browser as "android" which a lot of sites interpret as "android mobile" and redirect us to mobile content anyway. I have also read where some folks can't get the setting to stick through a reboot.

When I select "desktop" in the stock browser, it gives me a very different experience than when I select it in another browser, such as Dolphin. I am under the impression that selecting "android" would tell a website that I am on an android phone, and it would render the mobile version of the site. I don't want that, so I selected "desktop" but still often get directed to mobile versions of sites. I thought I read that the reason for this is that selecting "desktop" identifies the browser as "android"...as opposed to "android mobile." I guess sites aren't coded to recognize "android" as being different than "android mobile" and render the mobile version.
The suggestion has been to notify site owners of the problem and ask them to update their code. I think to do that effectively, I need to fully understand the issue, and I'm sorry but your reply didn't help me with that.
Android user agent is for tablets. Desktop is for desktop. Not many sites are setup to render pages for a tablet that's why you get the mobile version when set to android.

But...I'm getting mobile versions when I'm set to desktop.
Thank you for your replies. I think Chongo has made a pretty solid case for the Dolphin browser.
Dolphin is one of the best alternative.
I am using the Dolphin Mini on my Nexus S just because of this user-agent issue, plus tabbed browsing, quick bookmarks, etc.
It is not as fast as the stock one, but the speed is still fast enough to enjoy the experience.
I read that Dolphin is still not good enough on Honeycomb. They have updated it, but still choppy.
We can hope that the developers are hard work to bring it up to speed with Honeycomb, better stability, faster with hardware acceleration. Certainly, this will be realized quickly as I read Google developer posted detailed information about hardware acceleration on Honeycomb:

You need to type ' about:debug' every time you reboot and in some cases after clearing your browsing history or after the browser stops. In other words, 'about:debug' does not stick. But your settings are remembered, so you won't have to keep changing your user agent, you'll just need to keep typing 'about:debug' in your address bar. The easier way to tell if you're still in debug mode is by clicking the menu icon and seeing if you have expanded options or not.

For me, Safari is listed when in both desktop and android mode. When in android mode, platform shows as unknown.
With Dolphin in desktop mode, the agent is Chrome and the platform is Win7.
I don't have Xoom, so I cannot test that

Dolphin in desktop mode:

Stock browser in desktop mode:
Browser branch name: Safari 5.0

Gizmodo.com
The mobile site is vanilla and plain but DAMN it's better to look at than that new mess of a website they've put up the last couple of months.

I think the issue here is why can't the Stock browser settings stick when you change the user agent. Dolphin seems to work perfectly fine after rebooting or after a browser crash. If the Stock browser did the same thing, after changing it to desktop, I don't think anyone would have an issue.
FYI Google addressed why this happens in their Android Blog:
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/12/android-browser-user-agent-issues.html
Basically, the browser reports itself as Android, but not Android Mobile (as someone else suggested).
Websites currently sense if you are using Android and assume its a phone (because it always used to be), but now they should key of the word "Mobile" instead.
This does have drawbacks, but from an engineering perspective, it is the "correct" way to do it. Hacking the user agent is bad practice - its important for web admins to know if a lot of tablets are accessing their website, for example, so they can make sure the site works well for them. If Google set it to spoof a windows desktop, web admins would never know how many tablets were being used, and may be serving their users with a less than optimal page for tablets without realizing it.
So it will take some time for web admins to fix their sites, but unfortunately, this is the right way to do it. It would be great though if the about:debug settings were sticky. It might be bad practice for Google to design the tablet to spoof the user agent, but its fine if an individual user decides to.
-Taylor
It seems like the best option is to complain to webmasters who do not allow the option of leaving mobile mode on their sites.
If the option to view either mobile or full site is given then there is no need to spoof the user agent and the device would be properly tracked by whatever software the host is using. We need to complain more to the web admins if we will ever see the compatability that the ipad users currently have when browsing the web. At the same time the web admins need to know that enough of our devices are out there before they will see a need to create an alternative browsing experience. This is why I am against changing the user agent.
Edit: Perhaps Google had the same thought in mind and this is the reason the user agent setting does not hold after a reboot.

Tweak Stock Browser for a Desktop Experience

I see a lot of folks complaining about a poor web browsing experience. Perhaps this will help.......
There is a hidden settings menu that you can access by doing the following:
* type "about:debug" in the URL line and press enter/go
* select the "settings" menu (squiggle lines) top right corner
* select Debug, UA, and Desktop
* back out of this and again type "about:debug" in the URL line
This should tell other websites to display web pages in a non-mobile format. I have not yet tried, Netflix, Hulu, etc... but I believe these sites will work properly thus removing the need for the android apps. Please confirm.

I know I know....

but for me that option should be... in setting directly and not in a debug mode
works fine...therenare also options for rendering.."render single cloumn"nsounds interesting
I can't get this to work with Hulu, though. I have the latest flash installed, as well as the latest Adobe Air, and when I go to Hulu, I am still told that my platform is not supported at this time.

After you type about:debug nothing will change. Select the menu square in the upper right hand corner of your browser. Select settings. Then select debug. The setting for the ua string are in there.

Dolphin sucks in a major way. They even acknowledge that they have a known bug with web pages simply not opening.
Can't use Netflix because Silverlight needs to be installed and as far as I know that can only be done on a tab running Windows.
The setting stays in my browser even after boot, thanks for the tip.
The setting stays for me, but I always have to type about:debug to get websites to detect it correctly.

about:debug did not work for me (stock browser no OTA update).
When I select the settings menu I have additional options for "Dump navigation cache" and "Dump V8 counters" but not a Debug option.
Am I missing something?
UPDATE: Ugh! I just realized I needed to select settings FROM the menu - sorry!

Can't use Netflix because Silverlight needs to be installed and as far as I know that can only be done on a tab running Windows.
The setting stays in my browser even after boot, thanks for the tip.

Maybe in a browser, but there is an app for that - I have Netflix on my Evo. There's about a half dozen Android devices that can run Netflix and many others are able to trick Netflix by making it think it is a different device.
