USB charger - Acer Iconia A500

Is there a charger that can plug into a USB port. I have universal laptop battery that has two USB charging Ports that I use to charge my phone and would like to use to charge my Iconia. Is there one out there?

Can you splice a USB cable and a charger together?

It doesn't matter what you slice together as it will not take a charge via the usb port. So unless you got some magic spells and chants and perhaps some pixie dust. Then it isn't going to happen.

The reason why it's no is:
Any devices USB port only puts out 5 volts.
The A500 charging port requires 12 volts.
The A500 USB port doesn't charge the battery.

Wall/usb/webtop charging

So the wall sends out 1000 ma and USB sends 500 ma.
What about webtop? Anyone know?

Now that would be interesting. 500,000 volts from a USB. Needs a flux capacitor.

Hey thanks! I already have a dock though.
In my post I asked what the charging output was for the HD dock.
Sent from my Atrix using XDA App
USB 2 is 500ma, USB 3 is 900ma, Moto charger has 850ma rating on it. If you have a USB 3.0 port you can use you'll get enough power from that. I use the 3.0 on my laptop at work, and it charges fine.
How can we find out the charging output of the multimedia dock?
Sent from my Atrix using XDA App
Do the differences matter much? Just one takes longer to charge then the other?

Yes one charges faster that's it. For heavy users like myself, getting the most juice as conveniently as possible is a plus.
I also like to charge my phone on the dock and keep my usb cable in the truck for playing music. I only want to do so if I can find out what the dock is putting out. When I need juice I need it as quickly as possible.

If your only getting 500mA your phone will take hours to charge and then only if your not running wifi, Bluetooth or gps. Use any of those and plugging it in will just prolong discharge but not actually charge it. With just GPS running I pull over 700mA. I'm really tempted to put a female end with resistors (to fool the phone into thinking it’s on AC power or it'll never pull more than 500mA) on a split wire usb mini cable for charging at work.
I finally used my brain and checked my chargers. Here's the specs
Standard charger: 850mA
HD multimedia dock: 1.2A

I think the dock is rated higher to power the usb ports. I bet it still only feeds 500 to the phone for charging. Looks like its back to the cable for charging!

seems like till now there's no way to disable this
Just an update. I think the dock charges as fast as the wall power adapter. Almost certain.

This is interesting as I have issues getting my Atrix to charge in the car dock. I have the ATT boxed car dock with ecomoto dual USB. It simply will not charge in the dock. Connected direct to the car charger and it's super fast to charge. Maybe the ecomoto isn't capable of charging the phone in the car dock.

Is using a different wall charger harmful? I was using my old palm pre wall charger for the first few days and it is rated at 1000mA.

My girlfriends nook wont charge with any cable including the original after puting honeycomb on the sd card and idk what I did to it... could it be the connectore were using im using a griffon usb wall charger and her nook says discharging then when we plug it in it says not charging and I feel horrible cause I broke it it does go up in percentage but it says not charging... Is there any way to fix this its brand new and I dont have money to replace it plus It was a gift from her mom

Only the official Nook cable and charger will work for charging.
But the percentage goes up, and also it never came with a wall charger only the cable....

If it was new it came with a charger. If used, someone stiffed you. You can buy a charger and cable from B&N for $24.95. The charger and cable have additional charging pins from normal cables which is why other chargers will barely if at all charge it.
It was brand new but only has the cable she still has the box which only has a slot for the cable

Both brand new and Barnes and Noble refurbished come complete with charger and cable. The charger is a small wall adapter with a USB socket that the cable plugs into. It can supply about 2A and over extra wires / pins which are in the official cable.
Check the box and if you didn't get the adapter then you should contact Barnes and Noble.
You can charge your nook with a compatible cell phone charger, but you have to plug in the nook, then turn it off and leave it alone for 8 hours or so to get a full charge.
Do check for the part the cord should plug into, to plug into the wall. Call 1-800-thebook if the cord breaks (which it will!) for a free replacement. The cords are cheaply made. I am on my 5th cord - all replaced for free.

Simultaneous charging with Pogo and Micro USB?

Can I plug in the Pogo charger and the Micro USB at the same time, and have a faster charge? I've tried it but I don't really know what to compare it to since I'm new to the Nexus and don't know really how long a full charge takes lol
It would be super sick if somehow this could slice the charge time in half.

No. The charging icon will display but the N10 is not charging. That feature would need to be included in a ROM but neither stock nor any custom ROM has the capability. This limitation extends to using an OTG cable and pogo plug.

Thanks man. But I have a portable micro USB charger, if I connected that via an OTG cable, and pogo charged it as well, would that work?

No, there simply is no ROM that supports concurrent charging. In fact both stock and custom ROM's block pogo changing when the Micro USB port is used.

What's the difference with the extra plug in the new USB cable included with Note 3?

What does the extra plug do?
Just faster transfer speed or faster charge using USB 3.0?
I tested it with a standard USB 2.0 microUSB cable and it still works and charge the Notes 3
It dedicated in/out. Much faster charging and data bandwith

From what I've heard and read USB 3.0 doesn't charge faster. But it transfers days about twice as fast as USB 2. But don't quote me on that. ..

True, doesn't charge faster from the wall, but will when plugged into a USB 3.0 port on a computer when compared to USB 2.0 port.

I tested this, and it seems to charge at the same rate in a USB 3.0 port, plus it stopped charging after a few minutes. The port is a PCI Express card from Rocketfish.
Now I'm starting to doubt the accuracy of the app or my understanding of what it does.
It's Galaxy Charging Current Lite. If I launch it while my battery is charged to about 80% it says 460. If I come back & refresh the view when it is charged to 97-98% it says 1800. Why would the rate start slow then speed up as the battery fills, shouldn't it be the other way around?
A few weeks ago I used another app to check charging rates of my Nexus 4 with different cables & chargers, and this app seems to be very different. I guess I need to try to figure out which battery checking app it was.

The charge/data cable, is just a standard USB 3.0 cable, just like any USB 3.0 external harddrive cable. I am actually using a black WD USB 3.0 Cable instead of the ugly white cable supplied.
All the cable does, if you have USB 3.0 on your PC/Laptop is allow for much fast data transfer (great when transferring music or video to and from your phone via usb. Note that you need to select USB 3.0 mode on the phone.

[Q] How can I get a faster charge from USB in my PC?

My Galaxy S4 charges.... terribly directly connected through USB into my PC in both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 inputs.
Am I doing something wrong, is there a way to boost the charge you get from a USB PC input?
Thanks!
Most USB ports on a computer are only 0.5 to 0.75 amps. To charge your GS4 you really need about 1.0 amps, the charger that came with your GS4 is 2.0 amps. So no you can't get a better charge from your computer.

Check the logo on the USB ports. Look for one with a lightning bolt. My laptop has specified ports that have higher output for charging.
Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk 4
Some laptops from MSI are supported by their utility called Super Charger. This boosts the power output but also removes connectivity (I believe). So you won't be able to connect your phone and transfer data.
There maybe be a utility that supports your laptop for boosting charging. Best thing to do is Google around for some programs.
If your laptop is old you're probably out of luck.

There is a cord that is used for external hard drives on laptops it uses two usb ports but plugs into one drive doubling the power. Just a thought. Only thing is they are usually mini usb not micro but an adapter should do it

Thanks all! I also have another problem!
I read your answers, so I decided to get a 3 amp car charger for my S4! If the original S4 wall charger is 2 Amps, then a 3 amp car charger sounds good, right?
Unfortunately, my phone gains no charge from it in both of my cards, my phones battery just dies slower when plugged into the car.
Any tips? Thanks!
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
Most car chargers lie about their ratings so that could be one problem, the other, is most phones see car chargers as a usb port charger instead of an ac charger so the rate of charge is automatically reduced to usb charging. Somewhere on here was a thread on how to modify a car charger so the phone would see it as an ac wall charger and allow it full output. I believe you have to open up the charger and jump a wire over. Search on here or google it and you should find it.
Could be a lot of things. But remember you phone will only allow its self to charge at a certain rate. Thus, purchasing high amperage chargers will provide no benfit.
High amperage chargers are more for tablets that require more power for their larger batteries.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
Mine does that. I have to reboot it while it's plugged up to my car charger. Thought my charger was bad after taking the MJA update. Still looking for a fix....
