This just in: Face Unlock, a new feature in Ice Cream Sandwich. No more PINs or patterns. It uses the camera and runs some face reconigition magic on your face to determine whether to unlock or not.
Here's the ICS release video: http://www.youtube.com/android
I think this is an awesome feature. It kinda makes the fingerprint scanner on our beloved Atrix a bit redundant, or no? All provided that we will be able to run ICS on the Atrix in the first place.
Not a fan of the new UI design in ICS by the way... Most of the other improvements seem really, really sweet though. Watch the video.
Your thoughts?
P.S. The above link is the live feed right now. If you're watching this later, the Face Unlock feature should be around 0:30 in the video.
nevermind.....
My fingerprint scanner will never be useless.
It's only as good as it works and it didn't during the demo. Lol. Anyways that phone looked mighty nice.

Lol that's true. It wasn't the only thing that didn't work either. Murphy's law I guess We will see.
I still want either a pin or pattern option. The face recognition didn't work properly at the event.
Hopefully there will still be a pin pattern for those that rather want it...

Erm, the Fingerprint scanner takes half a second, whilst the face unlock takes like 4 seconds according to the video. Plus you have put your face up to your phone so you look like an idiot.
I still like the fingerprinter better... just saying though... If the iPhone came out with this first though. It would have been a world wide break threw with technology... Its kind of sad how little attention Android gets with break threw.. dang apple fan boys...

Fingerprint scanner is quicker and won't suffer from lighting issues, glasses on/off etc
My bet is also this will be vulnerable to the *hold up a photo* trick that so many single camera face detection systems are.
I am looking forward to some of those updates though, task management looks nice.
I wonder if someones photograph could unlock that.

I just hope we quickly do get ics... I was sure I was gonna abandon the Atrix ship and go to the nexus... but after seeing the official specs of it only having 1.2 TI processor and just a 5 MP camera... ill stick to the atrix for now... then go for the galaxy set to have that beautiful amoled HD display instead...

There's an app in the market called visidon that uses facial recognition and works quite well. The problem is when you're in a dimly lit room or at night. There's no ambient light so nothing shows up to the camera. The wow factor to my iphone friends is high but I found the low light issue a pain in the a**

But really, who wants ****ty digital zoom anyway. If you wanted a nice camera on your phone, you should have bought a Nokia NSeries or something man. TO OP: Don't let that be a deal-breaker for you... I'm sure there will be custom ROMs around in given time that supports zoom and 720p video recording. Hope this helps.

I have the Galaxy S and just upgraded to CM7 nightly's which gives me a similar cam to the Nexus S. I've confirmed with a friend, and there's no zoom on his Nexus S.
I was surprised to find out, that there is no Zoom on the camera any more, as the Galaxy S (stock samsung) camera application supported zoom via the Volume Buttons.
For those saying "oh it's just digital and not optical zoom" is irrelevant. It allows me to take my crappy pixelated photo with out having to crop later before sending. The quality on the camera is sh!t anyways.
I'd personally like optical zoom and it seems like a standard reasonable feature these days.

You have to understand that the Nexus S is meant to be a developer phone so it lacks certain features that can be later added by the developers in the XDA forums.

Developer phone or not it still cost the same as the galaxy s yet they didn't add alot of stuff shouldn't the phone be cheaper guess not more I think about this its just dumb Google is really droppin the ball. No tv-out no 720p recording no sdcard no zoom no codecs only thing that's better is the form factor and updates from Google I guess but that's the price I pay for lord Google to give updates rant off I guess

I don't think I have noticed this posted anywhere yet...
take a look at this UI (homescreen replacement?) soon to be released on Android:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys7gua-noOE
it's buttery smooth!
i think shells suck..spb on my nexus?no i had it on p3300 a few years ago..
I'd definitely use this.
yeah ..i'd like to use that too ...
what really caught my attention was that the transitions and animations were silky smooth -- to the point that I doubted whether the video was 'real', or if it was just computer generated imagery!
Certainly impressive, but it's a bit overdone in my opinion. When every single element is glassy with gradients and reflections etc it really makes it look cluttered.
Personally I'd like to see more black in these interfaces, running a SAMOLED screen the black just merges into the bezel beautifully, giving the impression that there are no edges.
But as said above, I'm impressed at how smoothly it runs, considering I sometimes get stuttery animations on the standard interface.
That is really nice looking. Was that a stock android ROM or a new interface?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Yeah I signed up to beta test this a while ago, but wasn't picked. It looks really cool and all, and I would definitely try it out, but it might be a little much for standard everyday use. Maybe not..guess we'll see. It would definitely be useful to show off my nexus s to people lol

Been using this for a couple of days and really loving it. I initially thought it was a bit overdone too but it actually works. I can totally use this as a daily driver.
Lucky enough to be chosen for the beta. Not sure if I'm allowed to share the APK. If someone can clarify that for me then I'll gladly post it.

Indeed it is. All you need is some java experience. If it's not too difficult, I may do it myself! I need to brush up on my java anyways for pre college credit.
Edit: thought about it a bit longer, may not be the same implementation you think making it a bit hardet. Since I don't have access to a computer for three more days, ill think about it a while longer.

Not to be disheartening but I think that the fingerprint sensor isn't always on as it is so if you do what you want it will probably be at the cost of battery power although I'm not exactly sure how much it would affect it if even at all.

Indeed.
Also FP is something totally new in all phones. And don't know if there is a function that detects in which way you are moving your finger.
FP Sensor its like a camera, that it took pictures when a finger slides on it.
Eg when the phone is locked with screen on, it is activated, and when it detects a finger, it pictures it.
Good luck if somebody makes it!

I'm gonna say no. there is no open access to the fingerprint sdk from motorola which has made it difficult to use for non-moto apps such as widget locker. it's difficult just to enable the fp scanner on outside apps, accessing its functionality further is even less likely.

The fingerprint scanner is made my Authentec and the SDK is freely available from them. http://developers.authentec.com/
However, I doubt that it exposes which direction the finger was swiped, and I'm pretty sure it's only on when the screen is waiting to be unlocked.
I had a Toshiba laptop with fingerprint scanner which supported scrolling. But it is possible it scans more than 1 line at once so it would know which direction you are sliding. I doubt that would be the case with the Atrix one but would love to be proven wrong

I've never used it on the Atrix. Bought it when it came out. but it just drained my Desire!
Plus i have always prefered a more stock look. But no denying its really smooth and has fantastic looks.
I use it as well, i like the look of it, it really has some cool eye candy. I haven't noticed too much of a battery drain, wish it had some more widgets though
I have been using it March. I have no complaints. I switch launchers from time to time to try something else but I always come back to sod shell 3d. Espierlauncher is the only other launcher I like on the atrix and I use that to make my wife and friends mad since they all have iPhones. I am running. CM7 and I don't see any extra battery drain with this launcher. Assonance as they make it available for tablets my eeepad will be running it

I used it way back when I had Windows Mobile and I loved it, but for some reason I don't feel it's the same on Android.
Don't get me wrong, it runs good on the Atrix, but it feels like overkill for a launcher.
Maybe if it had more useful widgets I would give it another try.
I always come back to Launcher Pro.

Oh well I did. I'm not paying 15$ for a launcher regardless specially this one its got a few nice Widgets yea true but wat is so special that makes it cost 3-4x as much as others ?
Sent from my Atrix-4G, stock 2.3.4 (rooted)
I'd like to try it, but I could never justify $15.00 for a home replacement launcher or almost anything in the app market.
It is a nice launcher, but how customizable it isn't keeps me from using it regularly. Not to mention it frequently crashes with no error, just a black screen then says 'SPB shell is loading...' Navigation and transitions are generic and redundant in some cases. Most of the SPB widgets look nice, but leave a lot to be desired. Updates are infrequent and all the major problems have yet to be resolved.
Its a nice product to demonstrate a futuristic-looking phone but in terms of functionality, it's like putting the steering wheel in the glovebox of a car.
If you haven't checked out Go Launcher recently, I highly encourage it. 100% free, developers update the app at a feverish pace, and it is amazingly customizable.

Shame about the new boot animation, though. I kinda dug the colorfulness of the last one. This is a little too bluish, wooshy, scifi looking, like a wonky portal effect from 10 years ago. Reminds me of the unfortunate tastes that gave the mod community a few too many Matrix themes.
