best way to start is by reading and playing. lost of people come here every day and say 'where do i start' without reading first. No one is being rude if you dont get an answer, but theyd be answering the same question every day.
Heres a good place to start

Play with your device, and once you have a feel for it, you can ask more specific questions.

Hehe, None of the tweaks and tips will damage your device, the worst that can happen is you have to hard reset (factory default).
(well, unless you start flashing roms, but you shouldnt go anywhere near that until you are confortable with the device.)
I'll cross my fingers for you that someone has time to chat direct to you.
Hi guys, I'm a little new to this ROM thing and I would like to change mine because it keeps freezing. How do I know which ROM is the best for me and how do I know whats different between them. Sorry for the ignorance but I've read a few of the posts adn feel confident that I can do it I would just like a little help/ insight before I actually just go throwing something on here. Thanks Nyne!

Well, first thing, I think this post belongs over in the General Forum. This is the place for Chef's to post their ROMs. But we'll let a Mod decide that and since I'm not a Mod...
The great thing about flashing ROMs is that there are so many to choose from. I can't tell you from week to week which one is my favorite, but then I do a weekly flash just to stay on top of the latest stuff
If your phone is freezing due to the well-known SMS bug, you can either find a ROM that replaced the HTC Messaging with something more stable.
If you are like me, you will probably pick your first ROM based on looks, and then from there you may end up flashing different ones that satisfy your current needs.
I've never heard of anyone breaking their phone by flashing too much, but you still want to be careful and only flash ROMs that have positive feedback in the comments. At least, at first.
After you get some experience, you may just decide to start going crazy and make your own
Best approach is to read the first few posts of the roms you are interested in, map them against any requirements you have and try a few. Read the various stickies and tutorials carefully first.

Hi Folks
Thought I’d post a quick message to introduce myself
I’m Chris - your new Forum Moderator
I’m here keep an eye on things and help where I can. We all benefit when the forum runs smoothly and everyone helps each other.
Potted history of me:
Married with 5 Kids – first grandchild on the way (it keeps me busy!!)
I’ve been a member on XDA since 2007. I’ve learned, asked questions (yes, some in the wrong place), and I’ve developed for phones too.
As I’ve seen both sides. I know what it’s like to want help, and what it’s like to post your work and get flamed
Everyone makes mistakes and everyone deserves help so I tend to take the soft view over issues and try to help. Everyone needs to follow the rules though
I don’t tend to post a lot as I’m a fan of listening first, talking second.
Even though i'll try to keep an eye open i cant spot every issue without help
If you’ve any questions or any issues, drop me a message, (email, Skype etc) . I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. (Please consider things like time zones, work, sleep, Wife & Kids) it’s not always possible to reply immediately.
please feel free to say ‘Hi’ chatting is part of the community
Look forward to getting to know you
Chris

Hi all:
So I've been really into messing around with custom stuff for about 3 weeks now - and I LOVE the possibilities Android provides. I've been looking for an excuse to put my programmer hat back on and start messing with something new. ROM development and messing with stock stuff really looks like a fun hobby and I'm interested in having a look around.
I'm going to pull the Android SDK and go through all of that, plus I've pecked around in the AOSP web space, etc. etc. However, I'm also wanting to reach out to the dev community here to see what the preferred tools of the trade are. Would anyone be so kind as to provide me with some good starting points in the way of tools? Mods, please move my question to the appropriate place if this isn't the right spot for the thread....
Thanks in advance to anyone out there that can help!
