Flashed 3-669-SuperScaryStable on top of nightly cm7 212. Subsequently, WiFi could not maintain a lock. The phone would find the wifi network get a lock for a moment and immediately lose the lock. Get a lock, lose the lock. . . . Settings I tried were Scary and smartass governors 245mhz - 1.2ghz
Anyway, flashed nightly 220 (back to regular cm7 kernel)-- back to wifi working fine.
Maybe I looked too quickly but all I saw in the development thread pertained to Super Scary not working with sense roms.
Hmmmm.

Download wifi analyzer from market and figure out what is conflicting with your wireless router.
toastcfh's stock kernel is considered the most stable kernel because it's been tested and proven to work with everything time and time again.
However, I have no problems with wifi on Scary's kernel. Again, I'm not saying there are no issues because when I'm at work I do have issues but I have wifi issues on my laptop with the wifi here as well, they have way too many APs broadcasting on the same channel (4-5 APs for channel 3, 4-5 APs for channel 7, 4-5 APs for channel 11) so I seriously doubt it's a problem with the kernel but more a problem with your local wifi router configuration.
Run wifi analyzer and it will answer this question.
Am I right to assume that I should run the test you recommend after flashing Scary and recreating the problem - cause on Toastcfh's kernel there is no problem connecting to that router whatsoever?

You can run the same test on toast's kernel.
Well, you know, maybe it's just all about the goofy phone itself after all.
Trying to do the test (following a reboot) I'm just about sitting on top of the router (that I've confirmed is working) with wifi enabled on the shift and all I'm getting is "not in range." Can't get the wifi icon to even display at the moment.
Thanks for the help.

Did it. But seems that I've got the same problem. Connects for a little bit and then disconnects. It just can't maintain the wifi link. Doesn't stay up long enough to even get a screen shot of wifi analyzer.
Maybe I should try another nightly, stable cm7 or sense?

You can't take screenshots on wifi analyzer. Just analyze it yourself. How many APs are broadcasting on the same channel as you? More than 1? Change the channel.
There are two and they don't overlap. One is centered over channel 6, the other (weaker one) centered over channel 11. But the problem is that the parabolas that show the signal strength disappear pretty quickly and the wifi indicator at the top of the phone just disappears. What do you think about the possibility that I should switch to a different nightly or sense?

Ignore the APs disappearing. It sounds like your router is either a piece of junk or misconfigured.
Try configuring the wireless radio on channel 1.
Shouldn't be a piece of junk. wasn't that cheap ;-)
Works fine with my computer anyway.

That means nothing.
What kind of router is it? Manufacturer / Model number?
Also please remove ScaryKernel from the title of this thread since we have proven this problem happens on toastcfh's kernel as well.

Netgear sucks. Do yourself a favor and go buy a Linksys WRT610N or one of the new models.
Other than that all I can tell you is switch your wireless channel.
It's not a problem with the phone or the kernel, it's the router.

Ok - I'll try switching the channel first ;-)
Also - going to find some other routers to test the phone against
Thanks for all the time spent troubleshooting here
Ok - Vic - here's the end of the story, since you've been good enough to work with me on this - -
Installed and ran an app called "FXR WiFi fix and rescue" from the market. Didn't appear to help.
So, restored nandroid of Mik 1.6 and WIFI WORKS PERFECTLY once again. Strong, stable, consistent lock on the Netgear signal (and another close-by router as well.) Problem solved for me.
Not going to make any rash accusations about what the culprit may be which caused wifi to fail for me on cm7.
I'm happy I've confirmed it's not the phone.
Maybe my shift just likes MikRoms and Supreme Sense and was punishing me for experimenting!!

Glad to hear it but I'm still wondering.. did you even TRY changing the channel?
I get 20+Mbps over Wifi on 2.4ghz.
I was planning to try changing the channel, but you know what -- just happened to restore Mik 1.6 first.
And the result was dramatic. On the nightly CM7 the graphs displayed on wifi analyzer weren't stable at all. Even when the parabola's appeared for a few moments, their height was shifting up and down. It was like the signal strength was fluctuating.
On Mik's rom the height of the parabolas is higher than I saw before and just stays put.

Did you do a wipe data/factory reset when flashing CM7? Did you wipe dalvik? Did you wipe cache? Did you wipe battery stats? Did you flash the latest CM7 nightly and then right after that did you flash google apps 828 and new talk?
Not wiping properly before flashing a new rom could cause weird issues like that.

After flashing CM6.1 I got the notorious wifi connectivity issue that numerous people have been reporting around the web. The issue is the following:
1: Wifi discovers neighbor's AP but no longer home AP.
2: Wifi problem randomly fixes itself, but sometime comes back and home AP can't be found again.
Many random solutions on the web include removing all stored AP's on the phone, resetting the router, rebooting and power cycling the phone numerous times, etc. Most people report that wifi miraculously start working again after the above but there is no consistency to exactly why and what works.
I tried all of the above with no luck, and even flashed three different roms with different kernels, did wipes, formatted everything inculding boot partition etc.
Here is the ACTUAL problem:
Different regions use different wifi channels. North America uses the first 11, most of the world uses 13, and Japan uses all 14. After flashing CM6.1 it changed the regulatory domain on the phone to only scan the first 11 channels meaning my European router broadcasting on 13 wouldn't show up. This setting seems to be persistent and doesn't change just because a new rom is flashed.
The reason people report the problem to be randomly fixed after a few days (and sometimes coming back days later) is because most routers automatically select which channel to broadcast on and therefore might end up within the first 11 at occasion. If it changes to something higher after that however, the problem is back.
Solution:
Open Settings, Wireless & network settings, Wi-Fi settings. Press "Menu" and select Advanced. Press regulatory domain and change to 14 channels.
To learn more about this and understand which channels are used in which countries, look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels#2.4.C2.A0GHz_.28802.11b.2Fg.2Fn.29
Thanks man, even I still met an issue which was wifi disconnect frequently (usually after 12 seconds or less, it's re-scanning AP and trying to re-connect again) when I was trying to share my broadband internet from laptop to my legend.
BUT, after I update my wlan driver (now using 8.0.0.238 for my Atheros AR5XXX), the issue seems gone.
I found that by updating wlan driver to the very latest driver (for mine is 9.2.0.xxx) is not a guarantee to resolve this problem.
Now, by combining your suggestion and an "appropriate" driver version for my wlan, it work flawlessly until now
PS: driver version which will work varies from devices to devices. Do trial and error if you must
edit: well, not 100% gone, but much better . the connection is far more stable
Could be a problem for some but not all the issues with WiFi. I knew about this and even posted one or two times this check for the number of channels in different other topics as a possible solution. Still there are times when the connection to the "home" AP is done very late after entering in range or switching on the WiFi and the signal is changing from none to full and back frequently, for the same relative position to the router (I'm standing in the same place). Also even if the signal is full or good, the Legend seems not to have Internet connection that is, the weather updates or XDA applications or browser could not connect. This is still happening even if the selection for the number of channels is correct. And also this is not happening with a stock ROM, I made some comparisons between my Legend and one of my friends that has stock ROM. He is having full signal and excellent browsing experience while I have random disconnects or drops in signal level. My thought is that the difference between drivers made by HTC and the ones in CM ROM is the cause. As it is with some other HTC proprietary developments (like Flash implementation or FM radio), could be that HTC spent some more development time in eliminating bugs and making a better driver.
Of course, this will not stop me use CM ROMS, it is a little bit frustrating, but the other things in CM ROM's makes the difference for me.

I also tried using other android phone brand (5 series from samsung) which also has a stock ROM and there was no problem at all. Drivers is the culprit

Hello Rapier,
I have installed the CyanogenMod 6.1.1 (stable) on my HTC Desire (GSM / France) with latest radio image (32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27) and taken some time to configure it. Now, everything seems to run well ... excepted the WiFi (and perhaps also the GSM). My problem is exactlw what you have described:
- on stock ROMs, the WiFi signal is stable and quite strong
- on Cyanogen ROM 6.1.1, the WiFi signal fluctuates, the connection is unstable and gets lost.
I like CyanogenMod ROMs very much. The WiFi issue is the only thing that I was not able to correct. You were speaking about WiFi drivers: would it be possible to extract the WiFi drivers from the latest HTC Desire stock ROM and copy them into the CyanogenMod installation?
My impression is that the CyanogenROM is scanning for networks in the background, even if a stable and strong WiFi network has been found and is currently connected. Perhaps there is a possibility to disable this scanning?
To finish, I have also the impression (I know, this is not very scientific ... but perhaps it could help to determinate where the issue comes from) that the GSM network is also fluctuating. I use WiFi Analyzer (available on the Android market) and when I plot a graph, without moving the phone or even without moving myself, the plot oscillates between -80dBm and -30dBm (I swear that there is nobody playing with the on/off button of my ZyXEL router ).
@sz1a: Thank you very much for your post: this helped me to discover these "hidden" settings, but my configuration is manual on the ZyXEL and everything was fine. Perhaps you should switch the thread to "unsolved".
I'n not a developer, only an ethusiast with a Legend. Also I'm not a Linux expert so I can only guess and experiment...threfore I cannot tell if porting HTC proprietary drivers is possible. I'd say not...if it was, we would have it by now. The main reason I think, is that those drivers are not open source, so nobody can port them since the sources are not available. I'm sure that if it was possible, they'll have been included in CM

This is a brand new unrooted Mytouch 4G, so I suppose I haven't done anything wrong yet. =P
I tried the wifi connection on this phone, and it usually works great. But I later found out the it's not very stable. I carry this phone with me and walk around the campus, it doesn't always receive wifi signal like my iPad would always do. Also, sometimes even when it shows that I am connected, the internet based software such as skype will not work (making phone call without hearing any voice).
Is there a software/app that can help? Or maybe I should root my phone for a better version of operating system?
On the stock ROM and all Sense ROMs, there is an option under WiFi Settings -> Advanced -> Best WiFi Performance. Try selecting that and see if it makes a difference.

WOO! lol i found someone in the same boat as me...I go college as well and my ipad connects fine, but my laptop and phone (for some weird reason do not). Ive tried a whole variety of differernt rom and kernel combinations including stock, but nothing would work. I really really really wanted to stay stock on my phone because I like it so much, but it just wouldnt work. Then I tried the evil 4g HD rom with fauxs sense smartass kernel and suddenly wifi was working amazing! It connected as soon as I clicked turn on wifi and stayed connected throughout the day even though I was walking around campus. Plus the rom has sense so its not straying too far from stock! I dont know what the reason is, but you should give it a go and see if it works for you!
I finally determine to try your method. I can't find evil 4G HD rom. Did you mean Evo?

Hi All,
Since I got my DEFY I have WiFi problems. This issue only exists when WiFI has WPA/WPA2 PSK authorisation.
It is going like this: I connect over the wifi. Then connection works fine, I am able to browse www, check the emails etc, and after few seconds, minutes the connection stops working but still exist. I try to reconnect several times. Defy shows that is connected but nothing works fine. Internet apps or Market gives a message like the time is up, connection lost. I have to forget the conection in settings or reset device to get it working properly, but not for long.
And the thing is that there is only ONE ROM that works fine with WiFi on my DEFY. This is Cyanogenmod-7.1.0-RC1. Other ROMs have same issues. Doesn't mater if it is Cyanogen mod 7.1 stable or any MIUI or MS2Ginger. I tried almost all roms but nothing helped. So I had to go back to CM7.1.0-RC1.
Do you know what should I do to make WiFi working fine on other roms?
greetings,
Gregory
p.s.
Please, just don't tell me that I should change authorisation on WiFi router. This is not a solution for me, because I use WiFi in a lot different places.
Same problem
Hi,
I have the same problem with my Defy since a few months, no solutions!
I have the *EXACT* same issue. Was about to roll back to stock and send it in for repair, glad I found your post! I'll install the ROM you suggested and keep hoping this gets fixed

I think that's a different problem than we're having. It is finding the network just fine (and connecting) in our case. It's just that internet connectivity refuses to work after a few minutes, forcing us to disconnect-reconnect to get it working again
@OP: Thanks a lot! The ROM you mentioned does indeed not have this problem. It's not as stable as some of the more recent roms though, think I'll still be forced to revert to stock

maybe changing the regulatory domain channels from 11 to 14 could help. this option is hidden by default, you have to enable it: change the value of 'ro.debuggable' from 0 to 1 in /system/bootmenu/config/default.prop, save and reboot. after that, the regulatory domain setting will be shown in settings/wireless/wifi/advanced. simply change it to 14 channels.

OK, maybe I just passed the signpost but... do you still have the problem if you set your "select network" setting to 3G only?
I ask because (and it may be different on my phone as I am USA, stock ROM with wifi calling) if you go into the INFO menu > phone information > set preferred network type, mine toggles between three radio preferences: "GSM only" (when wifi is active), "GSM auto (prl)" and -- if I set for 3G Only, "WCDMA only".
I have noticed that when "select network" setting is at automatic (or 2G only) it often has trouble transitioning from cell to wifi. And, when wifi is an issue, I find that "GSM auto (prl)" has been selected (which on my USA phone prevents wifi connection). However, it seems to have no issue whatsoever transitioning from "WCDMA only" (3G only) to "GSM only", which on my phone then allows wifi connection. Again, this is a wifi calling phone so may be different.
Yep, same here BUT ! I get root browser, found my build.prop and change wifi chanells first time for 14 and it didnt help so i try other and my wifi works in 100% with 13 chanells. Try it
This is a widely know problem, many people are affected more or less. I'm also having nerve-blowing times with wifi sucking all over... Stock Froyo (and now Cyanogen 7.2) seems to be a bit more stable, sometimes everything is fine for a few hours, all downloads go lightning fast - and then suddenly things are screwed up. I tried a lot of MIUI releases as I like it most. MIUI seemed the most problematic so far. I don't know what is the cause, new stock Motorola Gingerbread ROM versions also have this issue (except one I think - look it up in the forum).
Agree, bothering with the router is not a solution. My Nokia E51, my EeePC, my girlfriend's Omnia and Lifebook - all work perfectly with all the four routers we use frequently. Not a single glitch - everything is stable and nice, except Defy.
I don't think is a hardware problem with certain devices, it seems more to do with the way Defy handles wireless connections.
Anyway, it's frustrating but CM7.2 and CEE Froyo gives a bit better experience than others.

Hi...
I had been using my tab for over 4 months without any issues. My wifi has suddenly stopped working (tab gets connected to the wifi but the the icon doesn't turn blue and the network is not up). I had recently updated to 3.2.1 but it was working fine for a few weeks on that too.
I changed my Wifi router security from WEP to WPA and also tried using static IP. I even did a factory reset (apart from the hard and soft resets) and I still have the problem. It is not rooted (and I don't want to do that yet) and since I'm not able to connect to the internet, I can't use any market apps to fix the wifi issue (even if there is one). Appreciate some help on this. Thanks.
This was happening to me all the time pre 3.2.1. Updated, sometimes it still happens but a lot less. I don't have my tab in front of me but I did find a Wifi widget icon. All you do is press it once to turn Wifi off and then again to start it again. You can probably find an APK on Google and install through your computer.

Yea but don't you have to be rooted to install that which the OP said he didn't want to do.
I am having wifi signal strength issue with mine as well. I think I am going to sell mine to get something else. It seems like these units are notorious for lie signal strength which sort of defeats the purpose of a tablet. When my phone gets significantly better strength that is bad.
I think it might be because of the metal back cover and a poor antenna.

Search this forum for the file... It's not hard to find. You'll need ClockworkMod to install it. Just flash on top of your rom, reset cache and (just to be sure) dalvik cache under advanced...
That actually only solves a part of the problem; the other part is the fairly weak antenna (just replace it, instructions are in this forum). The less intrusive solution is a repeater (~30 euro here in Germany).
Another good lead is to use a better WiFi AP. Cheap ones (particularly with those 10dbm antennas) tend to produce a lot of noise, which in turn triggers the driver bug (which seems to be the root of this evil) more often... this can be so bad it actually makes WiFi completely unusable (happened to me). The only solution to this is to spend a few extra bucks for some good router hardware (I use a Linksys/Cisco router and Huawei repeaters, all of which work fine).
Hi Guys,
I just got my Prime Day Essential set up and after updating to the latest Android 8.1.0 build with the July patches I'm one of the lucky ones with the 5ghz Wi-Fi issue, where when I connect to a 5ghz Wi-Fi, the connection and speed starts throttling down to no bandwidth at all. My workaround has been using the slower 2.4ghz SSID. I also have the issue where the Play Store download sometimes waits forever to download in the queue.
What do you guys do with this issue? Flash to Android P? Something else with you router?
I really don't think it's my router because obviously all other devices in the house are working flawlessly... Appreciate ANY help... Thank you!

I've been searching for a solution to this issue since I got the PH-1 about 3 weeks ago. Here I read your post, and I just did a test to disappoint myself once again with the issue... but... it doesn't seem to be happening anymore?!??
I am running AOSiP (8.1 w/ July security patch) with the latest Neutrino Fornax kernel (important because it has the latest Android P WLAN drivers, same as the Essential P B3 066 stock release). I am going to see if I can determine what might have fixed it, but I've been running this setup for a week and it originally had the problem.
What I would suggest:
- Don't spend much time diagnosing your router, all the changes suggested in these forums didn't change anything for me at least (YMMV). As you said, all other devices in your home are working fine (same here).
- Don't install P to resolve this issue. I clean flashed the Essential P Beta Release, and the problem was still there. In fact it seems to have been worse, with PS download stopping completely with a message "Waiting for WiFi".
- Try a different kernel. Try the latest ElementalX kernel (3.0.6). I believe it has the updated WLAN drivers as well since it supports Android P. I don't believe the Neutrino kernel works on stock.
- Check your PlayStore version, I think mine was updated recently (11.0.50-all[0] [PR] 206665793)
I am going to look into this more, and if I find a definitive "this is what fixed it" I will post it here. Good luck...
This is issue is not present for me on 9.0 further the speed difference between 2.4 and 5 isn't really world eg being on 2.4 is still faster than most broadband connections. This is seems to be a google security patch issue on 8.1 and likely will be fixed in the next patch. When the latest 9.0 beta came out it seemed to go away. So it seems they know how to fix it.
I have no problem either, latest android P, rooted with rey darkroom kernel
Edit, can u guys connect to any wifi? There seems to be an issue, after flashing various ota's, stock images, or treble gsi's that disable wifi and Bluetooth and the only way i have found to fix them, isfor android P at least) to flash a july 8.1 images (flashall. Bat) then flash android P to fix wifi and Bluetooth issues.

Thanks for the warm welcome, my friend and even more so, thank you so much for your very detailed post and what you've done to remedy.
I assume messing with the kernel and etc will require Bootloader unlocking and rooting, right? I haven't rooted a phone since the V20, just been opting out of that life for secure payment methods, stable battery and just general ease of moving from phone to phone like I do ?.
What I did last night... Could be a fluke, could be placebo, however, changing the channels on my 5ghz network, rebooting the router, I've been connected to the 5ghz network with my Essential for about 12 hours now with no throttling. I'm not sure if it was in fact the channel change or rebooting the router that cleared things up? Albeit, the signal strength on this network on this phone is the lowest I have seen between the Note 8, HTC U12+, iPhone 7 Plus...
Please keep the research up, I will too, this problem really has no documented solution yet.

Thank you bud, good to hear you're not seeing the issue... But honestly, it does exist for some of us. I really hope it's the issue with the July patch, that'll make things so much easier! Although, I disagree 5ghz is much faster for me than my 2.4ghz network...

Thanks for reporting, good Sir. Yes, I can connect to any network, just low signal strength and the choking issue I had before my router change. Bluetooth seems stable with my smart watch, though the watch seems to be draining the battery faster on this phone... Who knows man ??
You might have noticed I am on the P beta. Also have you run actual wifi speed tests or are we taking seat of the pants feelings?

Hey bud, yes good to see promising reports from P beta... Hoping the bad WiFi is resolved for the ones who get it.
And yes, speed tested, repeatedly. Sadly, Essential's top speeds are way worse than the Note 8, HTC U12+, iPhone 7 Plus... I'm talking almost 100mbps less ?...
For whatever reason though, the choking of the bandwidth down to unusual issue has gone away. Not sure if rebooting the Router did that? WiFi signal is also the worst I have seen on this phone out of all the others mentioned...
I appreciate you sharing your experience.

So your downloads are not as fast as your other devices but you no longer see the downloads slow to a crawl (~100KB/s)? My downloads are not slowing to a crawl either any longer. Something must have been updated from a Google perspective because nothing I changed could explain the issue just going away... :fingers-crossed...

Haha well my good luck didn't last too long, I fried my data, playing with Substratum, on a rooted system :'(... but here's to hoping the 5ghz good luck continues! Don't you love it when "magic" is the answer !?
All jokes aside, my WiFi signal and radio is still the weakest hardware I have EVER seen on ANY device!

I just had a issue with Substratum as well... what do you mean "fried my data"? I was able to recover my system using the Substratum rescue, copied to the cache/ partition and flash in TWRP. Did you already re-flash everything?

Hey bud, yeah, I was playing with Substratum on a NON-rooted, bootloader locked device with Andromeda. So when I had the bootloop, I had no custom recovery in place to flash the rescue zip. :'(
So I "fried" my data, beyond retrievable, I mean. I was surprised that the Essential stock recovery didn't even have a way to install update.zip? That way us non-rooted folks can always save our rescue zips on our computers and see if there was a way to sideload the zip through the stock recovery... Oh well, either there is a way, or I didn't know and couldn't get enough help in time in the middle of the night. I needed my phone working in the AM...
I have had 7.01 when I got the phone yesterday. Went to 9 same day and I can't watch a video. Speed test shows 1.2 M down 2.3 up. I checked other devices and they are showing 70 down and 10 up
My Essential didn't even see my 5Ghz network on 8.1, but I just updated to 9, and now everything is good. Getting 72mbit on a 75mbit connection, too.
On 9.0 rooted with ex kernel on 5ghz ac 866mbit no issues at all... I get 40 megabytes a sec on my wifi.. I have 65 megabytes a sec with my current isp. I why straight to 9.0 phone was on 7.1.2 when I got it a few days ago.

I just did the see 5th security patch update while already on P. My ph1 has never been able to connect to my Xfinity 5ghz channel. Actually, it will sometimes connect, but says 'connected (no internet)' then drips connection. So it's ALWys had trouble with that. My HTC 10 does not, my V30 does not, my M7 does not.
Since the 9/5 update, even my 2.4ghz channel is crazy slow. I get about 3mbps down with my case on. Took off case and get 15mbps. Verified thru multiple tests. My V30 gets 63mbps on same 2.4 channel.
Anyone have this situation? I can't seem to find any further settings in wifi settings to try to see if a setting is wrong.
Does the ph1 just have the worst wifi radio ever? Or is there somewhere in setting that I can change something that I just haven't found? Much thanks.
Stock. Not rooted, no custom kernel, etc. I've been hesitant to root this device because of the A/B slots confusing me a little and just don't have the time currently to really dig into it.
I've the same problem with 5GHz wifi... Connection is very poor. Automatically reconnect to 2,4GHz network. My iPhone 6s didn't problem with this. I don't know, how fix it.
Xfinity routers suck. That said my PH1 connects just fine to my Linksys 5ghz AC channel. Works all over my house and only switched to the 2.4 GHz when I go outside.

What are you guys using to confirm throughput? I'll be testing my replacement (recording audio issue with the one I purchased) when it gets in.
I do file transfers from my PC to my phone and back again and measure the time vs size of file. Over the local network obviously.

I've Tp-Link Archer C1200 with 5GHz and wifi AC. Other devices like a MacBook Air, iPhone 6s and ZTE Axon 7 works perfect with this router on 5GHz and AC speed. I think, that problem is with my Essential Phone.
