[Q] App specific lcd density? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to set app specific lcd density? The nook app sucks at 160 and so does shortyz crossword. The only two options are set at 161 and lose market updates or 160 and deal with crappy looking apps. Any ideas?

I wouldn't mind some thoughts on this also, specifically related to the Nook app. I have subscriptions to Nat Geo and PC Gamer and when I open the magazine list at 160 density all my magazines for subscription are all bunched into one icon on the lrft, if I switch to 161 they show up fine. I want to keep 160 because of the market and all that, but I also like to read my magazines once in a while. Anyone have any thoughts on this it would be great.

You can use the LCD density changer app's on demand change without saving it on reboot for now and just use it before you run the Nook app.

Can tasker do this?

Convince Amazon App Store I'm not on a Nook Color?

I love my Nook Color! It is an excellent tablet, that can run almost anything.
But I have to download most of the stuff from the Amazon Appstore on my phone, back it up, then copy it over to the Nook and install it manually. I always get the app of the day (whether I want it or not, I figure I may someday and just don't install it). So I have more than a hundred apps available on my phone when I open Amazon Appstore. On my Nook I have 17.
I have successfully installed many of the apps that I cannot see in the Amazon Appstore on my Nook, and they work perfectly. I used to be able to see everything in the Amazon Appstore and then a while back they added some sort of device check that is causing this.
How might I get around that device check? The phone-to-nook shuffle is a pain. It apparently isn't working off build.prop like the Google Market does.
Hm, I have 40~ish apps visible to both my Nook and my G1, and none that only one could see but not the other.
I think it does go off the build.prop - but only the first time you connect with the device. It stores the information for future accesses. So modify your build.prop, then go into your Amazon account from a web browser and click on "Your Apps and Devices". Deregister the device, then run the Amazon Appstore from your Nook (with the phony build.prop). It should re-authenticate with Amazon and register as whatever device your build.prop says it is. It worked for me, anyway.
I find this development a little disturbing, though. Amazon is clearly just trying to freeze out a competitor. They didn't have a problem letting me buy apps for my Nook until they got close to releasing their own e-reader tablet, and suddenly none of the apps that are installed and working on my Nook are deemed "incompatible" on the App Store. I've bought a couple apps through Amazon (and have a good number of the free "apps of the day"), but I certainly won't ever buy another one from them. Sure, I can work around it with this little trick, but I shouldn't have to resort to trickery to get around their bad business practices.
Beautiful. Worked like a charm. I went from 19 apps available to 122. Many thanks.

I used this:

I'm not so convinced it's a nefarious plot by Amazon in their Apps store, nor Google in their Market as I am that I've hacked something in a non-standard and not fully understood way and broken something. I'm seeing the same 61 Apps (on the All tab) on my Nook Color running CM 7 as on my Droid 2 phone. If I go flash a new ROM, it all breaks again. That's ME, though, not them.
I'm enjoying the Free App of the Day enough not to take this out on Amazon.
All I've done is set density to 160 and cleared data.
There's little doubt in my mind that Amazon is restricting apps on Nooks. They're getting ready to launch their own device, so it makes sense to try to reduce the value of a competing product. It's good business sense, but it shows very little respect for the customer.
I hadn't changed anything in months on my Nook, and one day it was suddenly "incompatible" with most apps on the Amazon market. Changing nothing but the product name in build.prop and re-registering the device makes it all work again, and if I change it back to the Barnes & Noble information, suddenly my apps are incompatible again. Sure seems like Amazon is filtering for "Nook" in the app store.
Are we certain this is a plot by Amazon or is this a response to the same type of "feature" recently implemented on the Google App Store?

It's not the same LCD density issue as the Google Market. I tested that. I registered the Nook as both a Nexus S and the default Nook Color settings in build.prop, at various screen densities, and no matter what the density is, if Amazon thinks it's a Nexus, it shows all my apps. No matter what the density is, I get about 75% of my apps not showing up when it's registered as a Nook Color.
It really appears to me that Amazon's App Store is looking for "Nook" or "Barnes & Noble" or something in the product model at registration. There might be another explanation, but I can't think of one. Especially with Amazon getting set to launch a direct competitor to the Nook Color...
Care to list a few of the apps you're having trouble with? If it's a plot, they shouldn't work for any Nook, right? This should be an easy test.
Never had a problem with any of the apps I wanted.
Just got the app of the day today without trouble too for example.
Guess the conspiracy is not yet fully in force.
Wait... I purchased some books with the Kindle app on my Nook. Perhaps they gave me a good comrade status.
I'm running Stock 1.3 rooted and I have had AppStore since 1.1 rooted. I just bought ThumbKeyboard and followed the directions on the preceding page to modify my build.prop because it wasn't showing. Now Amazon's website tells me it's incompatible with my "Samsung Nexus S" (Nook Color). Any ideas?
Isn't it possible they are simply trying not to give noob customers apps that may freeze their device...like say a nook that doesn't have a back button? It may not be some diabolical scheme to drive people away from the Nook Color simply because they HAVE to have the App of the day.....
A few weeks ago, both amazon and google markets made changes which made their markets more "device aware". This was not done due to any plot by amazon or google but was a change brought about to ensure that apps downloaded to a device would function well. This relieved the markets of the issues that come about by folks downloading incompatible apps then wanting refunds when they did not work. App developers were asked to list devices that their apps were designed to run on and these devices were included in the devs database on the market. This also protects the developers. As I said, no plot, just good business sense.
You can certainly change build properties and reregister your nook but remember that if the app does not function, you have no recourse through the market for a refund.
Just sayin......

Ditto to moshe5368 with one correction. A few months ago both Google and Amazon markets made their changes. I ran into the same problem. Unregistered from both markets, edited the build.prop file, followed the directions on repairing / replaceing the market , and finally it worked. Amazon is not plotting against other tablets, for now at least.
My wife's Nook wasn't eligible for the Apps from Amazon. I changed the Build.Prop file to the Samsung Nexus S per the instructions. I deregistered the device from her profile. I changed the screen Density to 160.
Now that I have done all of that, I can't get her device to re-register with Amazon. I tried to delete and reinstall the Amazon App using Titanium, but it wouldn't delete...any ideas? How do I re-register her device?
It's not just on the nook. I'm getting the same responce on my Viewsonic G Tablet.

Amazon is subsidizing the Fire, so it doesn't make financial sense for them to block competitors. They get more money from Nook users up front then they will those that purchase the Fire.

Gmail contacts and few issues

(Unfortunately I can't post in the Development section yet)
So I've rooted the KF, installed all google apps including the market and I have un-rooted it to be able to play videos on Amazon prime.
So far so good.
Now the questions are:
1) how do I get contacts synchronized with the gmail?
2) why many apps in the Google Market do not show up?
3) I am using the GO Launcher but in the App Drawer fonts are too big. Any fix available?
Thanks!
C.
I was at least able to fix the contacts issue.
I have configured my gmail account in the standard KF email app and I let it import all my contacts.
Now I can get contact suggestions in Gmail.
C.
thanks for the Gmail contacts tip!!! now...
2) some apps not showing up on the market has something to do with the "lcd density" of the kindle fire screen. this is different from the resolution itself. the density can be changed without changing the resolution. since you have root already you won't have a problem using the density changer app. i forgot the name but its included in lots of CM7 roms so if you look through the forums you will be able to find it.
3) the latest version of go launcher has options for changing font size i believe. you can try changing the font size if you used ADWLauncher as well. but the "too large font" problem should be taken care of if you do that lcd density thing i mentioned above. i have never tried either of them but i have seen youtube videos where they do work...

[Q] Can Android Market be installed on a non rooted KF?

I have a few questions and they are probably answered here but I'm at work so its very hard tor me to get on my phone.
- is their a way to get android market on a KF even if its not rooted? I really would just like to install apps that are not in the amazon market. A new launcher, etc. Do you have to be rooted to install apps from android?
- What is side loading apps? I keep hearing people talk about this? What is it for?
- is there a way to text people from my KF? If so can anyone tell me a good app?
- how can I change the amazon keyboard to say swiftkey or something?
- any way to play movies on the KF? Could I drop a mkv, avi, divx, etc. movie from my pc onto my kindle? Or could I stream it to my kindle somehow?
- last question to now...is there a way to improve the touch screen response? I have to repeatedly touch icons, links and whatnot. I thought I saw an app that improves the KF screen?
Thanks everyone for the help, its greatly appreciated.

1) No. Market needs root to install. Some other launchers work without root, but you now have to side load them. You can add other non-Amazon apps in many cases, but without root, you can't use the Android Market, so you would need to side load them.
2) Copying the APK install files via download or via usb or other means.
3) The Kindle Fire is not a phone, there is no radio in the device so no text messaging. You can use things like Google Talk but you need root to install it. There are some web based txt stuff, but that is not really on the device.
4) Need root to do this
5) There are other video players that will do this. Like MX Video player
6) Not really.
6 In particular is starting to get on my nerves. I think its an OS/Kernel issue because tapping stuff elsewhere seems to be ok, but that bar is a headache. Hit back 5x and you see it light up each time.
Also I dont know if its dolphin browser or what but a lot of the times I tap a typing area like google search, after 2-3 letters it just hides the keyboard.
Also I've been having more issues where you click a typable area and start typing, but nothing shows. Keyboard is showing recommended words, but none will actually show on the screen.
Oh, also if you're watching a video on a site, good luck moving the time bar. Sometimes I have to press and hold my finger 2-3 seconds for it to trigger.
Seems to be a little worse since 6.2 imo.
Once the kindle is rooted and the entire market is installed does the kindle act like an android phone? Do you get the android home screen? With cm7 does your tablet act just like phone obviously without gos and so on.

The market is just an app that you use to get more apps.
It will still look and feel like an out of the box kindle fire.
And last I recall the market wont show up in the standard kindle launcher, so no one would even know it was there.
You have to take additional steps to even utilize it.
CM7 would make it act like an android device. there are tablets with CM7 so it has nothing to do with phones. Gos I assume is gps, and some tablets have that so it isnt phone only.
Hi,
Please refer to the article below. It will give you a deeper understanding of what rooting is and some tweaks you can do to the unit.

If you have google voice linked with your Sprint number, you can send and receive texts via Google Voice
I have the Market installed but for some reason there are tons of apps missing for the market. Is their way to fix this?
Apps like Yahoo Fantasy Football to Google Maps or Google Earth are not there.

I think you can send/receive a limited number of text messages as well as make /receive calls with a free Google Voice account. I have not tested this with the Kindle Fire, so someone else may correct me.
There is an app called TouchScreen Booster that may help you adjust your screen sensitivity.
the following is from an other thread i don't remember (thanks to them !)
additional settings in build.prop:
# Rendering User Interface With GPU
debug.sf.hw=1
# Increase overall touch responsiveness
video.accelerate.hw=1
windowsmgr_max_events_per_sec=150
debug.performance.tuning=1
MAKE BACKUP COPY !!! - CAUTION WITH MODIFYING BUILD.PROP !!!
if your not sure - leave it !
i made this settings and i'm satisfied ...
Go to Kindle Fire browser Google search for "applanet". Under the link will be on the left "familiar interface" I tried that one first and it didn't work. On the right of it is one called "Version". I clicked that one and it directly started downloading an app. Tap the upper left part of the screen where the notifications are and when it is done downloading tap on its notification. It will install. (prior to this you need to go to settings - device and turn on download from unknown sources) install it and it creates an app called Applanet Market. Go to the Amazon market and search for ADW ex. Download that. You may find apps on Applanet that are not in Amazons.Search for any application you want. Like youtube, earth, gmail, whatever. When you're done playing with applanet hit your home key. It will give you a choice of ADW or stock. Check off the default box and choose ADW. Go to menu at bottom and go to ADW settings. Advanced. Set columns to 6 and rows to 6 and return back. At the bottom middle you have the ADW 3 button controller. I opened the app drawer (middle button) and dragged the Kindle Fire launcher to home screen and then long pressed it and dragged it over the area left of the appdrawer button. It will stick here and with it you can get to the stock KF home screen. But whenever you tap home, you will go to ADW. If you ever want to change that, go to settings. Applications. ADW. And at the lower area you can choose to release the default.

In response to this and OP's earlier question, MX is good. Moboplayer is good too, but I've been having full screen problems with Mobo. On streaming, you can use Dropbox or Sugarsync (I use SS, there is a thread on it in the apps category). For streaming though, I've found that MX doesn't work great and Mobo is better, which is why I use that for streaming, although I still have the full screen issues. If you stream using SS, just make sure that file is encoded in a quality to get a good stream. There is also another thread on how to setup files to do this in apps category as well.

[Q] resolution - not dpi

On my wife's rooted nook color, I loaded the Next Issue app for magazines. She has a subscription to better homes and gardens and can view them free if she has the Next Issue app. However, the Next Issue version only supports 1280x800 and doesn't even show as a magazine to select. I've tried every trick I could think of, DPI, Product ID, etc to fool the app into thinking I was using a different tablet (like the Tab 10.1). It must detect the actual resolution. Anyone know of a way around this or where it might be reading the table resolution?
Like I said, changing the DPI didn't fool it and it isn't looking at other tablet identifiers. I don't see where or if the native resolution is stored for apps to check.

Strange Play Store behavior on Nexus7

I have been experiencing odd behavior when accessing the play store via my nexus7. It doesn't appear to recognize I'm on a tablet. Most tablet apps in the play store don't show up. If I direct link to one it tells me I'm on an incompatible device. I also cannot view movies and books. Again, I'm told my device is not compatible.
I'm rooted. I started having this issue when I changed my DPI setting to 170 so that I get the Jelly Bean tablet ui. I've tried changing back to 213 and clearing my play store cache, doesn't seem to help.
Does anyone have any thoughts? Is this caused by adjusting the DPI to run tablet ui? If so, why would it not let me view tablet apps even though I'm running on what it thinks is a 10" tablet?
Exact same issue here. Can't remember whose method I used to root. But first thing I did was change resolution. Now most apps are listed as incompatible for my nexus 7.
Getting fed up of installing to my SGS2 and ripping the apk from it.
Changing the dpi is usually the reason for these problems. Have you guys tried clearing both cache and data for the Play Store after changing back to stock dpi?
change your dpi to the original, then change these lines in your build.prop to these and reboot..
