enabling disabling widgets... - G2 and Desire Z General

Does anyone know if widgets have any major impact on overall phone performance? I know they must take up some performance but does anyone notice any difference when they disable particular widgets or perhaps other objects? Just curious what everyone's take on this is. Any problem widgets for people would be greatly appreciated for future knowledge.

I can notice that several widgets on multiple homescreens can often hurt performance (obviously) but I think it really depends on what other programs you're running in the background. If you have a few widgets updating constantly, but not many other background processes, you'll be fine. If you have lots of background processes AND widgets, it may be noticeable.
If you get a lot of lag just moving homescreens, and have very low free RAM, then it might be a good idea to cut down on the widgets to help yourself out.
I personally only use one 4x2 twitter widget and a 4x1 music widget. I run a pretty tight ship and don't notice any slowdowns. I regularly have 100mb+ of free RAM though.

i usually have like 150 to 200 MB free lol guess I run a very tight ship, with maybe 2 or 3 exceptions I basically have it set so nothing runs without my telling it too. I have the news and weather widget, extended controls widget, doggcatcher widget, and the led flashlight widget, and like 2 or 3 more small 1 by1 widgets running on multiple home-screens. I was just wondering if it would make a difference lol. Not sure if it was me but when I re-ROM my phone it always seems snappier, but then I restore my apps and widgets, so not sure if it's the apps or the widgets weighing it down. Still pretty snappy overall though

I don't think they cause a major impact on performance, but definitely think they are taking up memory. I use GoLauncher's Task manager widget to keep an eye on what pops up, just about all the widgets I've got on the screens pops up on the task list. (CM7's Strobe/light, a2sd, fancy widget pro, etc)
However, more often I've noticed running processes from non-widgets I don't even use or haven't used in awhile, like yahoo messenger and one game. These take up anywhere from 3-15mb of memory.
I'd like to think that there is an association between consistent free memory and battery drain, but I don't really know of a way to log or test this.

hmm true, i noticed that I tend to have more problems with too little ram, rather than processor performance...

I've only got 2 widgets that actually take any battery to use. One is 3g Watdh Dog and another is Battery Monitor Widget. That's about it really, hardly uses any power at all. None at all actually haha.. Oh and a wifi on/off widget I find really useful too.

Lag or not lag ??

I've read all post in this board.
but i can't quite understand if lag is really there, if it shows only in certain phone(say carrier, geographical area etcetc) or whatever...
reading random post here and here doesn't give precise informations about this aspect of the hero's user experience.
So i'll make a poll. 4 options of lag-tollerability.
if you vote for the poll, reply describing details of the phone, and a precise description of the lag(where, when, app open...)
ps
I'm italian so sorry for my dodgy english.
I'm going to refrain from voting until I have a better idea of what precisely people mean by lag.
The only slightly slow thing on my G2 has been the messages - sometimes there has been a bit of a delay opening the list of messages, threads etc.
Today, I waited for all of about..........four whole seconds.
I can live with that.
None of the phone's other functions have any appreciable delay or sluggishness.
It's worth noting, however, that I don't use the Farcebook or Twatter widgits, so I don't know if they cause any lag on other poster's phones.
Compare this to my Vario III/Kaiser which seized up on regular occasions.
And if you had the temerity to hit the 'back' button whilst using PIE, well, it was sometimes quicker to do a soft reset than wait for it to get its arse into gear.
That's the feedback i was looking for.
in my opinion you are in the second option of the pool.
Because it's normal that some application need loading time, and that's not lag nor abnormal..
I voted no lag, but that is because of some modifications I made.
Before I go into detail, here is my definition of "lag":
My device lags if an action that should be instant hangs for a fraction (or more) before taking place. An example of such an action is a screen swipe across the homescreen. It should happen as you perform the swipe, if it doesn't, something is lagging and preventing the screen from moving. Waiting for a calendar to load, an inbox to display, logging in to messenger, that sort of stuff is in my view not lagging. They are usualy an action that loads data for display or modification.
I voted for No lag at all, but I cheated because I have removed the entire Sense UI and its widgets from my device using the Rosie remover from Modaco.
The Sense UI is a great piece of work, but every time I used it I had the feeling the Hero just doesnt have the horsepower to drive such a UI. (Which fits my description of lagging)
So, lagging: No, but only after cheating and reverting to the default Homescreen.
I voted totally no, but it's not exactly true. The phone can sometimes lag abit while it's loading up from sleep mode, also the browser can lag depending on which sites you visit. But both of those examples are very minor and I have never had the phone freeze for more than a second.
Sure the phone could be faster, but when I got it, and after hearing about it's laggyness from reviews I was supprised of how fast it was.
I use the default ROM that came with the phone, and taskkiller isn't even installed.
I have a couple of complaints about this device but lag isn't one of them.

I experience the same thing, I've had doubts on buying the new diamond 2 or the hero, since i've had the diamond 1 for a while I decided to try the android thingy.
Compared to that the diamond lives in the stoneages and experiences lot's of lag, my hero sometimes hesitates when coming out of sleep and when I just refreshed the widget's (got new mail ore weather update) it lags a tiny bit, but I don't consider the hero to lag overall so I voted option 2
Typing quickly makes the keyboard lag quite alot which always winds me up.
Scrolling through contacts is very clunky (maybe due to all of them having pictures and facebook status'). But then again dont offer the feature if its crap.
Messages takes too long to load up.
BAM!

Did you keep any aspects of Sense UI intact? I don't know what is tied to it as far as the keyboard and music player?
Totally no for me. I thought about 'More of a slight delay' but that would be less accurate, as for the most part things happen very quickly. The keyboard has been known to miss a beat, and large pdf files take a minimum of time to load up the pages as you scroll, but apart from the expected delay in processing intensive tasks, generally I've been pretty amazed at the speed of the thing to be honest. If I was to say the Hero lagged, I'd have to say my PC lagged aswell. Some things do take time. You're not gonna load up a 5Mb pdf instantaneously on the iPhone either.
To completely remove delay or lag from a phone you'd need processing power far beyond that normally required by the software, which isn't practical.

Only the visible parts have been removed such as HTC widgets and the homescreen itself. The apps still work great (calendar, people, keyboard, etc). The background services are still present.
Just a bit of delay between switching screens and once in a while I do encounter keystroke lag when typing on eBuddy and RoadSync email - rarely any keyboard lag when texting.
I've been trying out some bits and pieces over the past couple of days and have noticed some serious performance differences.
After my factory reset I didn't set an 'unlock code' with the connect the dots dealy, this has made a massive difference to the performance of my phone. Also, as I'm with Vodafone, I didn't bother setting up Peep, I opted for Twidroid instead. Without peep on a home 'scene' I've got a performance boost too. Twidroid is still running in the background, mind and I don't miss a tweet!
Just thought I'd chime in and see if anyone else had noticed the same.
No lag at all here with anything yet, tried a few different configurations. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but looks like the new update will sort out any lag in the next few days?
No lag for me, sometimes you have to wait a second but compare to my last phone (HTC Diamond) it's just black and white.
The diamond was buggy and slow. The hero is fast, I never had a freeze and Android is the best OS I never tried!
This is my first touch screen, and first android phone, so of course im constantly impressed with it. Blows my mind in fact.
That said, I do experience lag problems:
- that require me to use Taskiller to kill everything once in a while if ive been using to many difference apps.
- Keyboard lag when typing fast. More noticeable if apps are piled up in the background
- Sliding between home screens straight after unlocking the screen. Seems like once they screens are 'buffered' they slide smoothly and quickly. FYI i only use 3 home screens with only the clock, dialer, Taskiller and WIFI widget. Rest is plain app shortcut icons.
- Dialer widget. Sliding through favourite contacts is sloooow. Take a second or two to start moving, and as aboive, once I've slid all the way up and down and its 'buffered' its smooth as silk...
I voted for Sometimes is unusable.
First week I used TasKiller and Advanced Task Killer (great app btw!) to kill unnecessary apps running, and I was very pleased with the performance. Next week I uninstalled all third party task killer apps because I read here that Android should be very capable of handling these things. Well in my experience, I doesn't handle this all too well, I think now my device is lagging more than with me using task killers.
Lagging here means screen unresponsive when unlocking, not being able to drag notifications bar to properly view what's there, home screen switching is not so smooth etc. I'm only using Wi-Fi & other ON/OFF switches, medium weather app, couple of calendar widgets and bunch of shortcuts on my home screen. Only FB contacts are integrated, I'm not on Twitter or Flickr.
Just today I started using class 6 microSD card, and for now, everything seems pretty smooth. But I did remove the battery before doing this so it might not be so dramatic change compared to previous experience. Waiting eagerly for the new Hero update!
Only Sense is slow sometimes
Sometimes (once or twice a day) it definately lags. But it seems only a "Sense" issue. When it happens, for example the scrolling is not smooth anymore and the "SMS" Widget stops working properly (you can't flip trough the messages anymore).
But if I enter any Application, the App. itself works smooth and without any lags at all.
Strange thing is: after a couple of minutes (and it doesn't matter if the phone is turned on or not) the lag disappears totally. Maybe theres is some sort of "memory-rearrangement" or "Disk defragmentation" going on that slows the phone down while running.
it's worth noting as well that whether or not there are any "issues" it's always possible to make the phone lag - playing high-bit-rate-music while trying to browse a flash website will do it, for example - but that's only because the phone doesn't artificially limit what you can do

Lag reports...like bigfoot?

Since there appears to be such conflicting reports about lag or lack there of; I think it would benefit us all if we start to list who is having lag and who isn't whilst including where you bought the phone etc....
so to those that are having lag, give us these details:
1.) where and when did you get the phone, including the color
2.) branded or unbranded
3.) look under the battery or where ever for serial numbers or manufacturing dates
4.) report what firmware (if possible) and what the "about android" says in the OS
5.) what you are perceiving to be slow and when it occurs
If you would like some other examples of "slowness" check out the comments here: http://www.pda-247.com/wordpress/2009/08/htc-hero-review-part-two/
Note that after some discussion, all parties involved are equally confused and can't understand the opposing experiences of the other. I would also like to see reports from those that haven't experienced any lag or nothing like what some of the laggers are experiencing. I think we are experiencing some manufacturing differences here that have yet to be documented or made certain. I suspect this is all due to sense UI but who knows for certain. Is it possible to have the G1 Hero rom installed on a stock hero? Perhaps the Hero rom that is mentioned the in the hero dev forum would help? In any event, we should really start compiling specifics in a single thread as nobody likes buyers remorse

Fine. But it shouldn't be. If the phone is "just suppose to work" then there apparently still needs to be some optimization to account for the apparent excesses of others. I'm SURE it's JUST about what these people are doing...come on man, there has to be something else going on even if it is simply due to sense UI needing some optimization tweaks. You can't just toss away the experiences of many different folks (reviewers included) with the implication that the phone is not at all at fault for the negative reports.
I agree, I think there are variables we aren't considering. I think it comes down to the use of widgets and the amount of screens you have running, though I'm not totally sure.
I personally have not experienced any lag. I have a white sim free Hero, I use 3 screens, one with wifi, bluetooth, mobile data and gps widgets, a weather widget and a few icons. Another page has all icons, and the third has the bookmarks widget. I used to have the contacts widget on the second page and noticed no lag when using that either.
Once I tried to start up as many apps as I could to see if I experienced the lagginess people were talking about.... with no result. Still very slick.
What I don't have is a clock widget. I personally think it's useless when you have the time in the taskbar. I don't use a twitter widget either, but Peep seems to start itself sometimes.
That leads me to something else, I have apps which start themselves up spontaneously. Peep, Glympse, calendar for example.... they all show up in the task list (Taskiller) when I haven't used them. I've switched off any auto updates/ stay logged out etc. So that's a bit weird. That's part of the reason I'll use Taskiller maybe 4 or 5 times a day to kill everything running.
All in all I'm very happy and impressed with the useability of this device.

Laggy homescreen

Anytime I used the default launcher and add one or more samsung widgets, the homescreens start to lag like crazy when swiping between them. I definitely expect more for a high-end 1ghz phone. Are samsungs widgets just that bad that they suck that much life out of the phone? I also get very slight skipping when I have music playing. Anyone else having any of these issues?
The Samsung Widgets are really bad, IMO. They're slow, must use a lot of memory or something. I'm using ADW, Tunewiki for music, and I really don't need the others. The only thing I really like so far about the TW ui is the ability to change the fonts easily, even if there are only a couple of options.

in my experience it wasn't the widgets that bogged down the phone, i think it's the ROM that needs an update because it opens apps all the time i don't even touch, i know this becuase my task manager tells me and i have to close these apps constantly. currently this is my only real problem with the phone and it's making me want to return it

the lag vs apps

Now when installed a lot of apps including juicedefender and advanced task killer (set to aggressive when screen off with lots of exclusions) the lag has become more of an issue.
Now tell me whats the logic behind having installed a lot of apps and a lag? Running several apps multitasked will offcource produce performance-dips but just having them installed?
What exactly is "aggressive" on the task killer anyway? Some people say its just bad to kill tasks.
I have the idea that its the widgets that causes trouble, since they actually needs to run in the background all the time. I noticed today that the fancy-widget got stuck on upboot for like 60 seconds, that caused the 4 buttons below to not load properly. Alto the rather useless "daily brefing" seems to slow down.
I dont want to root and hack with sd-hacks now when froyo is confirmed to be released officially soon.
Do you have experice with sertain apps/widgets causing lag. If so, it would be great to make a list of "bad" apps.
PS, I tested the 30-day navigon today in car and it worked with no problems at all. Fix in 2 seconds and right on track.

I haven't used it in a while, but "spare parts" in the marketplace tells you which apps are consuming your processor IIRC. This will obviously give you a temporary hit to your ability to load and run processes but will let you know more details about your phone that you don't already have and the battery use section of settings obviously only talks about what is using your battery but that isn't going to tell you the whole picture.
I am also someone who says you shouldn't use ATK, at least the way you do, but I have it installed and use it a bit differently. What I try to do is kill all tasks after I've used the marketplace or before I do anything intensive (gaming, GPS tracking) and I kill all apps including ATK. ATK will consume processor, battery and will free up memory which then Android uses to open more tasks you don't need (using processor and battery in the process -> repeat cycle). If you need to free up memory 1-5 times a day I think my way will save maybe 15-30% of your battery over a 24 hour period while costing you less than a minute of hassle (too much for some, sure). Again, I only kill after marketplace (because everything opens to check for updates, AFAIK) and before something that will use heavy memory and processor.

Forgot the first part of your question, forgive me. I believe, the reason for more apps causing more lag is at least 2 fold. There are more apps that can be opened when you have free memory (in the vicious cycle I described above). There is also something that might be a bit unique to our phone, and I've only recently read this, it's a bit of speculation so I'm not trying to pass it off as fact but I think it's likely to be knowledgeable on the issue, even if not completely correct. Samsung's internal storage method is an SD card, that allows extra apps to be written to the internal storage but comes with a trade off of lag due to a potential combination of:
slow random-access
bad partition
I think I'm missing an important reason, I'll try to look and edit.
When I initially got my SGS I loaded it with a heap of apps and suddenly noticed the lag and quick battery drain. Problem was I couldn't track down the culprit.
I recently reset my device and was a bit more organized with what I installed. One of the things I started doing was checking what services were being used in the process which you can find under the manage apps part of the system.
So while you can load apps and they may/may not be killed by android or a task killer, the services will always be running - taking up memory, sometimes cpu, network. Things like weather checking, news checking, even email sync are some examples. These services plus any apps you run are I think what starts the lag. You need to be aware of which apps are also run as services.
Yes, there are some bad apps (last Facebook version was found to be a heavy drain) but I think they tend to add up with all the other services running.
As for 'Aggressive' depends on the app killer but my understanding (with the one I use), is that there is a memory limit before the app is killed. Once the limit is reached on aggressive, it doesn't take much before memory is cleared.
One thing to install is SeePU as this gives an indication of CPU, memory and network on the top menu bar. This also helps when the system lags (usually CPU is high and memory is low) and helps to know when to clean (or what threshold to set).
Hope this helps.

Speed Up your Android and save your battery!

Smartphones these days are Super Fast and powerful, At least on paper! Never let your smartphones down in front of others. Your smartphones can perform better than you expect, even without Rooting it! Excited? Well without wasting your time, Let’s start!
Remove your Bloatware
Well, bloatware is common with almost all smartphones. Even Redmi devices packs with hell tons of bloat in it! If your phone has RAM of 3GB or above it’s okay. But if it has 2GB or 1GB of RAM, pain! There are many tutorials available showing how to remove bloat on Any android without root. But it’s sort of risky if you are a noob. But the good thing is you can remove the bloat in most of the android devices, I mean manufacturers are giving the option to uninstall unnecessary bloat. But some Google apps and brand based apps can’t be uninstalled by the way! The only thing you can do is just disabling them. Open settings, open application settings and disable unwanted apps. By doing this you can also save lots of battery.
2. RECENT
The Recent feature in Android is everyone’s favorite. As Android is upgrading Recents were also upgraded. The latest version Android 7 (Nougat) added a new feature to it’s recent. Yes, it’s multi-window mode. Apart from that, even you got 2 or 3 gigs of RAM while multi-tasking phone slow down and puts pressure on battery and phone tends to heat up! To avoid this just clear the apps after locking your device. Yes, Android system knows when to stop background activities but clearing tasks are necessary.
3. Managing Internal Storage
In the quarter two of 2016, the entire game of smartphones is changed. Brands started launching phones with a minimum of 2GB of RAM and 16GB of on boot storage. Well, it’s decent enough for an average user, But the hybrid slots. Okay, now let’s get to the point! The major important thing of Android is it’s internal storage obviously. It’s a physical memory where users can store all their files. Better buy a phone with a minimum of 16gigs of ROM. So that you can manage it for years. Store what you want in internal storage. I mean just keep the files which you access daily! Better spend 50–100 bugs and buy an OTG-Cable and an extra 4 or 8 GB pen drive. Store all your movies, TV shows kind of stuff in it and you can use the OTG on the go.
5. REMOVE UNNECESSARY WIDGETS FROM HOMESCREEN.
Android home screen, extremely customizable! Yes, we need to utilize that! But up to some extent. Widgets slow down your device. Now you may think, widgets? Really? Yes. Widgets occupy the space of Random access memory i.e., RAM and tasks in the background. So it’s better to use as many fewer widgets as possible. In my opinion, one clock widget and a search widget is enough. Anyways you can access Google Assistant on the go! So search widget is optional too.
6. Don’t fall into AUTO-SYNC! It’s a trap.
Almost every student or teenager is a social freak. Previously only Facebook, WhatsApp are on the play. But now Instagram, Snapchat, Gmail, Yahoo, Twitter etc, are added to the list. It’s the very good thing that you are aware of all social media. But you are not aware of Auto – Sync!! Auto-Sync kills your smartphone’s performance and it effects a lot on battery too! Let me explain if you are connected to many accounts on your smartphone. All those accounts will be saved in Accounts section in settings. But if the auto-sync is turned on, it keeps on syncing your accounts which reduce the performance of your Android device. So disable it and make your Android fast. Turning off Auto-sync saves lots of your battery life too.
7. Stop using Cleaning Apps like Clean Master and all.
Lot’s of famous technology sites say that use Du booster or Use clean Master for boosting your Android device. But, no use! Rather they will kill your device. What happens is in the process of boosting, those cleaners will kill your apps in the background, So apps take lots of time to open. It affects Random access memory and put pressure on battery. It’s better to keep your device away from that kind of cleaning apps. Here is a detailed article by our Team Member Dinesh.
Does Usage of System Cleaning Apps Really Increase Device’s Performance?
8. Using a right Launcher!
Sometimes your device may lag a lot! Even after you follow all the above steps, then it’s time to change your Launcher. If you are a third party launcher user, this happens to you. Shift to Nova Launcher or ASAP launcher. As this kind of launchers doesn’t consume your RAM. My suggestion is to go with nova. You can customize it as you want.
So these are some simple steps in which you can make your smartphone faster. Well, that pretty much it for this small article.

That's the biggest bull**** I've recently read. Before you will write any guide, make a research first.
Apps left in recents doesn't drain your battery moreover that behavior saves battery life, because CPU doesn't have to load app from internal storage to RAM over and over again when you kill it.
