RESULT:
Stays at "waiting on device"
THEN tried to install drivers and now it FREEEZES on "waiting on device"
Wow this is complicated. can anybody PLEASE tell me what i need to do to FIX this and ROOT it??
ALSO i cannot reach USB DEBUGGING because i cannot get past the PHONE.....!.....COMPUTER screen.
please guys i really need help. I've tried everything!
Sooo....you used the PDA button when you odined the file, right? If you used the phone button you probably seriously damaged your phone.
And if you want to try Odining again, just pop the battery out, and then hold the volume down button while plugging your phone into your computer. That should get you in a working download mode...
yess i used PDA. Not only that, but now i cannot get into download mode anymore,\. Whenever i plug it into the usb it just has a grey battery on the screen with the circle progress bar frozen.
So to clarify, you pulled the battery, then with one end of your USB cable plugged into the computer, held down your volume down button, then plugged in the other end of your USB cable to your phone (you should still be holding the volume down button) and after a few seconds you're still not getting into download mode?
Do you happen to have a custom recovery flashed to your phone? You can enter recovery by holding both volume buttons, then hold your power button until you see the boot logo, you can then release the power button. (continue holding both volume buttons until you enter a menu screen with a few options)
Please post your question in the q&a section and more experienced users will help you!

The only other idea I have left is to hold volume up + power button for 6 seconds and see if you can boot into download mode again with the method I mentioned before.
And based off a distant memory of being stuck at the "PHONE ! COMPUTER" screen that was still considered download mode and it connected to Odin just fine.
Otherwise since debugging is disabled adb won't work (to my knowledge) I'm out of ideas, I'd post this in the Q&A section like that guy suggested to see if they can help further.

thanks for the help, but odin doesnt seem to be recognizing the phone on the PHONE ! COMPUTER logo. If you can point me to any links to drivers that i can download and install, i'll try those out too. My last bet would be to buy 3 resistors and try to get it to download mode that way, but thats the LAST thing i'd do.
Also, when i plug it into a usb and do the normal button combo i've been doing before, it just goes to a GREY BATTERY screen and it just freezes there now.
close thread please. i have a another problem which i have put into another thread

Hi guys, I bought a sim free samsung galaxy i9000 in London last week.
Several days later, I tried to root it. Then, I got a dead i9000, stopping on the galaxy logo when try to swtich it on.
I downloaded Odin3, and tried to use different i9000 firmwares to revive my i9000. It did not work.
Everytime I try, I just got nothing. The log on Odin shows like following:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
Then nothing happens, no progress bar or other things, even one hour later.
I have tried on 3 different laptops with Win7 32bit or Win XP SP3 32bit.
I can use Android System Recovery on i9000 now, and Odin can find the phone on COM4.
Can anyone here help me to slove this problem? I do not want my i9000 to be just a brick.
did you put the phone in "download mode" while using odin?
yes. I press Home, Volume and Power buttons all at the same time, and then I got the interface of Android system recovery. I think this is the Download Mode you meant.
While in this mode, Odin can detect the Phone is on COM4.
download mode is volume button down, then hold home button, then power it on, hold all three and you will get a picture of android and the words download on your screen, I think what you did was volume button up/home/power, this is another mode.

I was following the youtube video when the root failed. Now the device only shows the "Downloading" screen.
Edit: when rebooted the device shows: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.

held VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER and get a "Warning !!

Otherwise ,press the volume down key to cancel.

Volume Down : Cancel (restart phone)
I hit Volume UP to continue an it takes me to the screen shown in the photos.

Obviously you can't boot the phone, but does the bootloader work? Turn phone off... then hold VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER until you see Samsung logo then let go. If you have stock bootloader there should be an option to factory reset.
I believe the screen you're looking at in your pictures is specifically for receiving firmware, not the boot.
If everything I just said sounds retarded, I apologize. I iz noob.

I am guessing but I don't think he has restarted after the failure. The screenshot he posted is of download mode, which you only need VDown + Power by the way makes it a little easier to get to.

I thought "download mode" and "bootloader" were two difference things... you get download mode by doing VOL DOWN + POWER so the phone can be flashed directly. And you do VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER to start recovery. Am I wrong?

Recovery is VUp + Power. For each one you can hold home and it will work but it isn't necessary. In fact you only need power if it is off. If the phone is rebooting or already powering up you just need to hold VUp or VDown.

We need more info. So when you power the phone on it just goes right to download mode by itself? If you can get into recovery VUp+Power you can do a factory reset. I don't think that will help but it might. If you are stuck in download mode, the phone won't boot up or factory reset doesn't work Odin a stock tar of the version you were on, MDC, MDL or MF9.
All you have to do to get to download mode is press volume down recovery is volume up, no power.

If you can get to either of those you are not bricked. Bricked means your phone does nothing at all, no recovery, download mode and won't boot to a ROM hence the word bricked, your phone is inoperable and is a brick.

removed the battery. hit only the power button and get: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
Then I tried a Hard reset: removed the battery for 15 sec. reinserted held the Vol UP, Home and power till it vibrated. Then kept holding the vol up and home. I get the same message: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.

Write protection is normal for our phone. It shouldn't matter but download this version of Odin and try again. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1168421&d=1341114315
Also make sure the MD5 on the tar you have matches to confirm that it isn't corrupt.
If it still doesn't work try installing kies on the computer and see if you can do the recover firmware or whatever it is called.

Are you using the usb cable that came with your phone, if not do so. Also, try a different usb port.
I have a Tab 4 that won't boot. Recovery mode doesn't work but download does... kind of. Holding down the power, home, and volume down button gets me a horizontal white line that, if I push volume up, takes me to a static page with odin mode followed by three more lines of writing in the top left. There is no robot as it apparently should be. Kies3 doesn't recognize the device as being one compatible with Kies3. Odin hangs on <ID:0/003> SetupConnection..
Please help.
I've been a member for a long time on this forum and never had a problem rooting any of my phones with the instructions and files from here but I can't seem to be able to get my gs8 to pass odin.
I have the sm-g955u snapdragon model and followed every step correctly but when I hit start on the modded odin it just stays on initializing for a minute or so and and get a message saying attempts completed (0/1) and will keep getting the message every time I click start afterwards. Anyone know what could be happening? I've enabled usb debugging as well and tried other odins and different files but nothing seems to work. I'm desperate here and really need some help so any help would be appreciated thanks ?

Root at your own risk. This is a different issue...
Found this:
I'd say just rebooting into download mode itself while connected before hitting start would work too...
Damn didn't work ?, I've been wanting to root this since I got my hands on it but no luck
I think I may have the solution. I've done some research and this might work:
1) Download a stock firmware for your S8 sm-g955u model
2) Boot into download mode by pressing (power + volume down + Bixby button), stop at the first screen when it asks for continuing and reboot by pressing volume down.
3) Quickly boot again into download mode by pressing power + volume down + Bixby. Press continue. It should work good with Odin now.
4) Install firmware with Odin

So download a different stock firmware first and load that into regular odin and do steps above before trying rooted fw with modded odin? I will try this once I get home
Also just noticed I posted this in the gs8 forum and not the gs8+ sorry lol
UPDATE: Still no luck!
If anyone here is in northern Cali in the bay area and knows how to do it and has the right files, im willing to pay to get it done for me ?
I left my tablet charging overnight, i wanted to install crdroid so i unlocked and went into download mode, flashed the vbmeta from twrp and got an error saying it couldn't verify it. So i flashed the stock .md5 files but mid flash it turned off, now it doesnt power on unless i put it on the charger. when its on the charger it goes on for 5 seconds then off, then on again and then off endlessly. Its a bright teal screen telling me to use the emergency recovery software on my pc. Its detected in odin for the 5 seconds that its on but i obviously cant flash anything in that time. I've left the thing on the charger for an hour now and its still looping in on off for 5 seconds each time
Does it turn off with no cable plugged in? Is this the message about only official binaries are allowed to be flashed?

Let the battery run out. Plug the USB cable into the PC only. Then, while holding both Vol up and down, plug the cable into the tablet. A green or teal screen should appear with the instruction to press and release the vol up to enter the download mode. You should then be able to flash via Odin.

Will this also work when I can only get into emergency recovery mode?. When it's in the emergency recovery mode it's already detected in Odin, unfortunately it shuts down after like 5 seconds because it doesn't charge in that mode

It should get you out of emergency recovery mode. Once the green/blue screen appears, just let it charge for awhile before proceeding. Give it a half hour or so before you try downloading. Even if the PC only charges at 500ma, that should still work.:fingers-crossed:

This is the output im getting in odin whenever i try to flash any file (twrp, vbmeta from twrp site, stock firmware which i used before)
@lewmur the screen it is looping on is one all over you tube that says "An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software."
Problem is Smart Switch doesn't recognize it and no longer provides initialization tab. Also can't run old version without update which removes initialization. I've encountered same issue now in new S5e. While switching from LOS 17 to Luis' ROM I got weird boot screen like half download mode overlay on untrusted device boot splash. You can see in the one with mixed look that it said oem lock on then when I booted to download mode it was off. It would not boot that way so started flashing stock and about half way thru with odin it failed. From there it is as described, on for 2 seconds off for 5 seconds connected to PC. 5 seconds on and 5 off when connected to charger so guessing data+ data- is cycling something but it will not go to download mode. It goes to selection screen for bootloader, custom or vol- to cancel but restarts loop from there. Do you know of any reset requirement from that state, like possibly disconnect battery? Reconnecting battery used to solve a lot of issues and seems like it was part of most flashing instructions at one time. With newer device I don't know and didn't really want to open this one to find out if it is known to absolutely not be a possibility. Any thought on getting it be still long enough to flash ?
Maybe this will save someone's time and money.
The following story about recovering Samsung Galaxy Tab s5e.
I needed to downgrade Android version on my Galaxy Tab s5e from Android 10 to 9. I got image from the sammobile and tried to flash the tablet using Odin3 app on Windows. During the process I lost connection with my tablet and it booted with the error on the display "An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software.". In 3-5 seconds it rebooted and showed the same message. Over and over again.
Smart Switch app wasn't able to detect the tablet. I was able to switch to download mode but tablet was continuing to reboot every 3-5 seconds. So had no chance to flash the image again.
I assumed that battery level is low and tried to charge it completely enough. But that didn't work when I tried to charge with original adapter and USB type-A cable.
At this moment I was thinking that I need to take battery out and somehow charge it as my tablet doesn't want to do it by itself.
But I got better idea! I used USB type-c to USB type-c cable and connected my tablet to MacBook. So it got more power this time but it continued to reboot. I tried to the following and it was successful:
1. Unplug USB, power off the tablet.
2. Press and hold volume (+) and volume (-)
3. Connect the tablet and macbook using USB type-c to USB type-c cable.
4. Once the tablet displays the warning page ("A custom OS can cause critical problems....") , release buttons. No reboots this time!
5. I realized that it is charging now and decided to wait for an hour. That's what it!
6. I repeated flashing the image from the Odin3 app and this time it was successful
So this story has HAPPY END. Hopefully this will be helpful for somebody!
P.s. connecting the tablet to the macbook via USB type-C was the key here because the tablet was charging only on the warning page. You can start that page only when the tablet is connected to any PC but not to the power adapter.
Hi, thanks for the hint with the battery, had the same issue that it was shutting down when connected to PC after 5 seconds. Your MacBook brought me to the idea to use the same method on a USB stndard charger. So pluging in the charger while holding the Vol+ and Vol- brought me to attached screen, 5 min ago, hope it's charging now.

So this story has HAPPY END. Hopefully this will be helpful for somebody!
P.s. connecting the tablet to the macbook via USB type-C was the key here because the tablet was charging only on the warning page. You can start that page only when the tablet is connected to any PC but not to the power adapter.

I don't have a macbook to try so i did it with charger
If i plug it in pc, got bootloop in confirmation screen, enter download mode, imei screen.
So i just plug it in charger, press Vol Up + Vol Down + Plug cable to charger (leave it in confirmation screen don't press Vol Up or Down).
After an hours i take it out and plug it in pc, press Vol Up to enter Download mode and voila it didn't reboot so i just flash it with Odin.
Flash won't succeed first time, i did it again and it worked
* After flash battery level is 0% through i charge it an hours so maybe its the battery problem

Step 1: HOLD volume up+down
Step 2: Plug in the cable of laptop
Step 3: When you see the download/error screen I CHANGED quickly the USB-power form laptop to socket.
Step 4: let it charge for a while and flash again.
Without you, I would never came to the idea.
