Data Locks/Freezes - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello all.
I've been searching and searching for a solution to my issue. But I haven't found anything related to it. The problem I'm running into is that the data on my phone locks up and refuses to release if I use the data a lot on my phone. A lot meaning generally surfing the web, watching videos (via YouTube/Netflix), browsing the Market, using Google Maps, etc. Not that it won't lock when I'm using Gmail, or updating weather, or checking Gas prices, which it does. But they usually don't use data like the previously listed apps do.
The down arrow next to the H lights up and stays lit, a solid green. When data works, both the Up and Down arrows light up. And I notice that once it's just the Down arrow, data stops working. My phone slows down to an impossible crawl. Everything basically stops responding. Now if I'm quick enough on the draw and I notice that it's about to do it, and I enable Airplane mode, it cuts all of my connections. Then I disable Airplane mode and I can use the data again for a bit. But because of this problem, I have to restart my phone once a day (at least).
Data works fine (when it doesn't lock), and is really fast. Don't have a problem with that.
I'm currently running:
MDJ eVo Sense rEVOlution 2.3 (Froyo)
Baseband: 15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14
Kernel: 2.6.32.15r7.7-g187ebc6
on T-Mobile US Network
Everything else on this build works brilliantly. This one snag makes this otherwise amazing phone, extremely frustrating. I hope someone can help me out.
Thanks!

It's probably kernel related , so try using either Hieros, Tytungs or other kernel
You can also right after the error reboot into recover and go into Advanced and hit fix permissions

Having this problem too. But it works a few time to use a reboot or airplane mode. But after a serveral times doing that it really got stuck and the data connection doesn't come back anymore. Also noticed that my phone get's warm (under the battery)....
Update: Noticed that my data got stuck everytime after using the browser :S

Data Constantly In Use

So for the second day straight my phone battery has dropped to half in about 4 hours screen off in my pocket... After closing every program and turning off data sync, the 3G connection is still constantly in use. I downloaded a network traffic program to check usage, and to my surprise my phone had downloaded over 60MB in just 1 hour. I restarted the phone and the problem seemed to be fixed, however it's started back up again, even after restarts and switch from airplane mode and back.
I'm already using SwitchPro, I have all sync options turned off already. The problem didn't come up until a few days ago.
I haven't installed any new programs or widgets in the last couple of daysIs anyone else having a similar issue? Have you been able to solve it?
I had the same issue then I flashed Fresh. Now it is working proper. I would suggest flashing a dif ROM or factory reset.
Load aLogcat or Quicksysteminfo , from market and look at your logcat file. The cause will be obvious from there. If the phone is "idle" and the logcat is recording what's doing the data moving, you can then kill it.
Is it me or is the hands free Bluetooth constantly running even when unchecked.Maybe im looking at the log cat wrong but it appears that way
It looks like location services was using all that data. I think anyway, I'm not sure If read the logcat right, but a lot of that information dealt with location stuff. I went to settings, privacy, and disable google services from using my location and the constant 3g seems to have stopped.
Why would it just go ape **** like that after having the phone for 3 weeks?
I just noticed the same problem, turns out it was the people app that was causing it. I killed it and data traffic stopped. You can launch it from the menu and it loads back up and is fine. Just seems to be when it starts by itself when you first boot up the phone.

GPS, Social Network Sync, Flash, Screen Burn, General lag

So this is sort of a multipurpose post, just saying some of the issue I have had with my Vibrant, and some of the possible solutions or at least information that I believe will help toward finding a solution.
About the GPS, this is what I have noticed:
I am pretty sure this is a software issue and this is why- I've noticed that I only have a problem when I am using the actual GPS and the network based location. I started to notice this first in Foursquare. Even when I could get a lock in Maps (albeit with a blue circle indicating it wasn't terribly accurate) Foursquare would always show where I last checked in... then I realized it wasn't showing where I last checked in, it was showing where I last was located using the GPS. I found that if I turned off the "Use GPS satellites" option, and only used the network location option, Foursquare (and indeed any other GPS program) got my location near instantly. Similarly, when I had only the satellite option checked (and not the network location) as long as I was outside I got a pretty quick and steady lock. When I put both options back on... everything all crappy again. So I've been keeping the actual GPS off unless I'm using navigation, in which case I switch, and I haven't had an issue yet. So I think this is something that they can fix in an update. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
In regard to Social Network Sync:
It was driving me nuts that half the time I looked in the settings menu it would show that Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter (the Samsung variants) had "errors." Then I realized that for whatever stupid reason, they seem to only run into these errors on wifi. If I turned wifi off and synced... it worked. Turned it back on... didn't work. I tried this a few times. However, that said, the Social Network Sync is kind of broken. For example, even if you have it set to download all of your Facebook friends, after the first time it won't. To add them, you have to go into "Link contact, Get Friends, Facebook" and then check who you want to add .This is kind of annoying, and hopefully will also be fixed with a software update. Again, any thoughts would be appreciated.
About Flash:
This is honestly my biggest issue with the device. If you look in the applications it does have Flash lite. It just doesn't work. Coming from an almost flawless Flash experience on the MyTouch Slide to this is really not fun. The reason this annoys me so much though is because in apps that utilize the browser (for example NewsRob) whenever they load a page that has flash on it, you are kicked into the browser and get an error message (webkit error, file not found or some such.) When I'm browsing through articles in NewsRob it's incredibly annoying to have this stupid error message (which opens the browser, then an error, so it takes three back presses to get back to the article, all of which have a little delay.) Again, this is something that 2.2 should fix, but it's still frustrating. If anyone knows of any possible solution to this it'd be greatly appreciated.
Screen burn in I discovered today.
Much to my dismay, I noticed today that the clock digits were burnt into the screen, much like how the notifications were burnt into the screen on my Nexus One. The difference is that this took awhile to happen on my N1. Not three weeks like I've had the Vibrant. I don't know if this is permanent or just temporary, I have a pure white background open full screen right now, and will run like a color flashing thing next, hopefully this will get rid of it. If not... that's just excessively disappointing. I love love love having what is literally the most advanced screen technology in existence, and having a literally perfect black level, but screen burn in on a few week old device (that has been set at low or auto brightness since day one) is just not acceptable. I will post again after a day or so of white screen/colors and let ya'll know the results. But it's frustrating. Has any one else noticed this yet? Or have any other possible solutions?
Lastly, lag.
I've noticed that the ONLY lag on the device comes from stupid TouchWiz and the Buddies and Feeds widgets. With them disabled the device FLIES. With them on, it's slow and occasionally has to be force closed. For now I have the widgets in question disabled, but this is vastly annoying, and really makes me wish I had my MyTouch Slide back (except with this screen and processor lol.)
So, in conclusion, I generally love this device. But the second T-Mobile announces The MT3GHD, it'll be on eBay faster than you can say Android 2.2 with Espresso lol.
Quick update, jscreenfix app from market fixes the burn in, I let it run for about an hour. I'm going to do that every week just to be safe.

Even though I personally believe the gps is a firmware/driver issue, your explanation above does nothing to narrow it to that... You say the GPS doesnt work right when it is turned on...
well... yeah.

In Location settings, there are two options, Use wireless network and Use GPS satellites. What I am saying is that if BOTH of these options are turned on, it doesn't seem to work properly. If I only use wireless networks, it works (even indoors) but isn't terribly accurate. If I use GPS only, and I am outside, it works, accurately. So I am just saying there seems to be some disconnect between the wireless network location and GPS location working in sync like they normally do.
And (@lemarg) I don't see how my post is whining, I'm just pointing out some observations about the issues I (and other people) been having with the phone. Maybe I misunderstand the point of a forum.

PPP experiment

I have an experiment for people using PPP to try.
In WinMo, disable all your wireless settings. Turn off WiFi, BlueTooth, and cellular data (phone). Boot up Android (I was using HTCClay's SuperHD v1.3).
Do you still have lock ups requiring you to pull the battery? I put a clean install a few minutes ago. I was getting lock ups in just a minute or two. I disabled all wireless in WinMo, booted, and I've been running for about 15 minutes without a lock up.
I read somewhere else (I read XDA too much to remember where), that someone else was having success with this method.
Edit: Using Chucky Rom and Radio 2.12.
With my combo (in sig) and everything off in WinMo, I don't get screen freezes with ppp. I sometimes get weird hesitations when browsing. This browsing hesitation could be numerous things, DNS lookup issues, server issues, etc.
WiFi works too. My only issue is leaving WiFi on and having my phone go into sleep mode for a few minutes. If my phone hibernates while on WiFi, it takes 15seconds to wake it. However, I can leave the phone on a charger all night with WiFi and I'll never get a freeze.
Thanks, Willgill for the info. Here's something I just posted in the SuperHD thread.
Everything is working wonderfully with this change. No more lock ups needing battery pull. I still get a few screen freezes for a few seconds, but this is due to the G-sensor issue. I can work around it by turning off the G-Sensor in settings, and when they release an updated driver, I won't need to. Also wifi is working fine at the office. On Bangsters, when I would turn off wifi, the entire phone would lock up without exception. With the WinMo changes, I can turn wifi on and off without any issue and it picks up signal with no trouble. Even GPS seems to be working better.
Is it possible when Haret shut down WinMo, something was still left in memory and caused unexpected conflicts and lock ups? I'd love to hear from other people who had PPP locking up on them if this helps their setup at all
Well, I can say that there is a good news and bad news for me.
Thanks to your suggestion I've had two results:
First: using "SuperHD2_v1.3 AXI PPP" I was able to get Data connection, first time with PPP.
Second: I was unable to get Data connection with "mattc Leo + Froyo w/Sense 1.7 PPP" not with base kernel not with "oe.netripper.com/files/htcleo_autobuild_evo_tree/zImage-20100913_001101-htcleo".
PS: I think that reason of failure setting Data connection with PPP builds for me is that there is almost no 3G in Moscow and I'm stuck with old/rusty 2G/2.5G GSM/GPRS/EDGE, My thought is that PPP have trouble working with 2G because most of the devs are working in areas with 3G available and simply didn't thought of 2G at all. It wouldn't bother me if not that the evo_kernel is the one which under development currently, not the old nexus_kernel.
And a little update, I am now switched to ★shubCRAFT 1.5★CM6 Final★ thanks to your finding as it appears that only by switching phone module before booting Android is solved the Data connectivity problem with some PPP build.
But that's not all, I've tried shubCRAFT's build before PPP ever was introduced and had to turn out them with only reason that BT in calls wouldn't work, the Phone app just hang it self, but now that is fixed two!

[Discussion] Bell JK4

I figured this would be a good place to discuss the new Bell JK4.
I noticed after getting JK4 that there are a few changes (ones I didn't know existed):
- the default wallpaper is different
- Bell bloatware is gone (mostly)
- the start-up Galaxy S logo is slightly different...it has a shadow effect
- in recovery mode there is now a "Format Internal SD"
- the drop down menu brightness trick doesn't work anymore
- the data logo seems different on the top bar
The data symbol is gray now, you're not crazy The GPS icon is also different.
- TouchWiz lock screen now has the provider name on it
- Menus are a little darker blue
- The setting for what to do on USB connection seems to be gone, incredibly annoying
- back and home together is a screen shot
My phone is certainly very fast now but that could be the factory reset. Also 75% of Skype calls turn into static, very disappointing as that was the main reason I wanted froyo. But overall excellent rom so far, I can mass install apps without it hanging for once.

Pros/Cons
I've updated to JK4 as well and I'm quite satisfied.
1) Brightness setting trick - still works, but it seems you only have to drag the notification bar without having to pull it down a bit. This is good, as I used this feature frequently.
2) Bloatware - this still seems to be there, like the Yahoo search widget and other Bell apps.
3) "Car Home" and "Desk Home" - apps which are more or less shortcuts for apps frequently used in the respective environments.
4) Cursor Arrow - now there is a big arrow cursor thing whenever you click on a text so you can drag that arrow to get to a spot you want.
This is HUGE for me. This makes it so much easier to get the cursor to go to where I want it to be.
5) Copy & Paste Hovering Menu - along with the cursor arrow is the hovering menu which allows you to copy/paste. Again, dramatically improves the experience.
6) HQ Music Album Cover - Before, the album cover was low-quality even if you had high quality album art. Not anymore.
7) Video Player UI change - makes it look cleaner and nicer.
8) Auto-Rotation Shortcut - in notification bar
9) Pinch Zoom-out in Homescreen - sort of similar to Launcher Pro
Now many of these may not be specific to Bell's JK4, but I just wanted to throw it out there.
Performance wise, starting up apps feels faster, which may be real or conceived.
Downside seems to be that scrolling throw apps seems slower/laggier/choppier than before.
GPS is pretty much same for me. Works perfectly fine outdoors. Not so much indoors, though I'm not sure if GPS is supposed to work well indoors to begin with...
Sum up, an improvement over Eclair.
Gps won't find a fix for me. Ideas? I had cleared cache and did a reset once I installed jk4.

Stood outside for 2 min and got nothing. Walked inside and turned it on for one last shot...got lock.

I upgraded to froyo tonite and all is well so far but... I seem to be missing sseveral apps in my market downloads list even though they are still on the phone.
Anyone know why and how to fix?
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Think I might have a solution to the missing apps problem. I had the same issue all my apps were still on the phone but most (all the free ones) were missing from the marketplace. The solution is simply to download any free app from the market place, install that app and then close and reopen the marketplace, all my apps were restored. Hope that helps.

FROYO killed my vibrant
Help! I just updated to FROYO on Kies... all good. After 10 minutes I started getting some process errors when running apps and suddenly (when trying to load Market), it died and started to cycle the white Samsung S GT1900M start screen, then black, then start screen, then black.... aaaaaaah! 3 button reset to get to recovery mode DOES NOT WORK (it had previously). Yanked the battery, no joy.
If I use 3 buttn rec using the volume down button I get the little android guy shoveling logo saying "Downloading.... Do not turn off Target!" but it has been sitting like that for 30 minutes.
Ideas?
Here's my list of pleasant surprises:
- Kies connection (MTP?) always works and disconnects fine. Before when I disconnected from Kies my phone would lose the internal and external SD's until I tried to mount/unmount when connecting USB.
- Overall very smooth feeling
- Calendar now supports bi-weekly repeating entries
- Gmail app seems to be much better. Plus there is an additional update to 2.3.2 that came out just today (Gmail 2.3 comes with JK4) that only works with 2.2 and 2.3 (Gingerbread). I had to download it from the Market.
I still haven't given the GPS much time but I have yet to get a successful lock. So far it is looking worse than JH2. I will have to do some more testing.
That's all I got for now without repeating what other people have said already. So far I really love the Froyo experience. I'll post more after playing with it some more.

Download mode only does something when connected to a computer. You can use it to return to stock using Odin.
My GPS seems to be working pretty well, I can get a decent lock outside and in the top floor of my house in 15-30 seconds, and I tested Navigation a bit driving home from classes and it seemed flawless to me.

Yeah, I was confused about that as well. But it's still there. They just moved it from Settings -> About Phone to Settings -> Wireless and network.
I guess connecting to PC is in the realm of networks. Anyhow, it's still there, and they now even have little android screens when you connect/disconnect.
Pre Froyo, the only problem I had with my phone (i.e., no lag w/100+ apps installed, GPS was perfect) was the wonky G-Sensor. After Froyo, it works absolutely PERFECTLY!! LOVE IT!
And I'm liking this thread. Anyone who has noticed new Froyo additions specific to our phones please post them! There was another post in one of the many Bell Froyo posts that had some but can't remember now...
Post hints and tips guys!!
Also, this is a general Froyo tip, but I love it: Chrome to Phone (Chrome extension, there is one for Firefox too) and Android to Cloud...love using these to send webpages, text, maps to phone and vice versa!
@jypyper
you have the internal sd card issue. The phone needs to be repaired.
I've noticed home page scrolling got smoother. App page scrolling on the other hand is slow and delayed. I've also had a few wifi errors now where the wifi doesn't kick in.

Anyone having any GPS lock issue or My Location based on wireless network issue? I'm using this phone unlocked on Rogers, and they're not working since the update...
GPS sees several sats every time I try it outside..like 7+, but it doesn't seem to be locking on to any of them. Again, I did not have any problem with Eclair...
I can't find the xda developers app invthe market place after the upgrade? Anyone else experiencing this?

I've noticed this as well.
I'm having a problem where my 'Back' button freezes and will not work. I press it and the light on the button goes out with ho haptic feedback, but it does not exit the screen. I can press it 100 times and it does nothing. Then, if I press the home button, it takes a screenshot and seems to unfreeze the back button...any ideas?

Random apps will think I have no network connection, when I obviously do... help!

Hey guys,
This problem has been going on for a week or two now. Phone worked great when I first got it, but something must have changed (newest Verizon update, perhaps?)
Let me preface this by saying I've seen this happen both on Wi-fi and 4G. When on Wi-fi, and it happens, I've tried turning Wi-fi off and still get the same errors.
The apps affected seem to be random. A couple days ago it was Google Maps, I was getting the "offline navigation" prompt. Today it was Chase (couldn't screenshot it), TeamViewer, IMDb and so on.
Here are some screenshots. Note the time in the pictures.
- First encountered the problem when opening TeamViewer.
- Did a Speedtest to confirm that yes, I'm really on 4G as the phone shows, and it's quite a stable and fast connection too.
- Let's try some more apps. Here's Target's Cartwheel
- Delta app? Same problem.
- TeamViewer Host app. Same problem as the client.
- IMDb. One more random one not working.
- Lastly, I went back to Pokémon Go to confirm I DO still have network connectivity (not sure why the screenshot got ghosted like that, but you can see I just redeemed items from a Pokéstop I was near with no errors)
So as you can see, the phone itself, as well as certain apps, work fine. But others don't. I tried turning airplane mode on and back off, disabling/enabling mobile networks, nothing works. The only thing I can do is reboot the phone.
Any ideas? This gets incredibly annoying as I can't seem to go a whole day without *some* app whining that it has no network access. Some apps work flawlessly every time (like the aforementioned Pokémon Go) but others don't.
By the way, that little screenshot button in the bottom left is from this neat app called Custom Navigation Bar. I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with this problem, though, all it does is add buttons.

No I don't have power save mode on. Should I turn off the power monitoring of apps as well? Didn't think that mattered as long as power save mode was off.

I turned all the power saving stuff off and still have this happening. As in, I set it to not even monitor how much power each app is using.
